Cinema and science fiction were made for each other. Science fiction has been at the cutting edge of film technology and the genre has produced some of the most ambitious, imaginative and visually spectacular films ever made. Yet science fiction cinema is about more than just state-of-the-art special effects. It has also provided a vehicle for film-makers and writers to comment on their own societies and cultures. In this new study of the genre, James Chapman and Nicholas Cull examine a series of landmark science fiction films from the 1930s to the present. Smit studies the woman behind the public image as a natural, wholesome, even saintly person, an image carefully crafted by Bergman's first producer David O. Selznick. There are strong connections between harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. A recent example of this interaction is the proof of the spectacular result by Terence Tao and Ben Green that the set of prime numbers contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. The breakthrough achieved by Tao and Green is attributed to applications of techniques from ergodic theory and harmonic analysis to problems in number theory. Articles in the present volume are based on talks delivered by plenary speakers at a conference on Harmonic Analysis and Ergodic Theory (DePaul University, Chicago, December 2–4, 2005). Of ten articles, four are devoted to ergodic theory and six to harmonic analysis, although some may fall in either category. The articles are grouped in two parts arranged by topics. Among the topics are ergodic averages, central limit theorems for random walks, Borel foliations, ergodic theory and low pass filters, data fitting using smooth surfaces, Nehari's theorem for a polydisk, uniqueness theorems for multi-dimensional trigonometric series, and Bellman and $s$-functions. In addition to articles on current research topics in harmonic analysis and ergodic theory, this book contains survey articles on convergence problems in ergodic theory and uniqueness problems on multi-dimensional trigonometric series.

This volume is a collection of papers dealing with harmonic analysis and nonlinear differential equations and stems from a conference on these two areas and their interface held in November 1995 at the University of California, Riverside, in honor of V. L. Shapiro. There are four papers dealing directly with the use of harmonic analysis techniques to solve challenging problems in nonlinear partial differential equations. There are also several survey articles on recent developments in multiple trigonometric series, dyadic harmonic analysis, special functions, analysis on fractals, and shock waves, as well as papers with new results in nonlinear differential equations. These survey articles, along with several of the research articles, cover a wide variety of applications such as turbulence, general relativity and black holes, neural networks, and diffusion and wave propagation in porous media. A number of the papers contain open problems in their respective areas.

This is the second volume of Thomas Cripps's definitive history of African-Americans in Hollywood. It covers the period from World War II through the civil rights movement of the 1960s, examining this period through the prism of popular culture. Making Movies Black shows how movies anticipated and helped form America's changing ideas about race. Cripps contends that from the liberal rhetoric of the war years--marked as it was by the propaganda catchwords brotherhood and tolerance--came movies that defined a new African-American presence both in film and in American society at large. He argues that the war years, more than any previous era, gave African-American activists access to centers of cultural influence and power in both Washington and Hollywood. Among the results were an expanded black imagery on the screen during the war--in combat movies such as Bataan, Crash Dive, and Sahara; musicals such as Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky; and government propaganda films such as The Negro Soldier and Wings for this Man (narrated by Ronald Reagan!).
