The aim of this study is to better understand the connection between the Lyman $\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW$_0$) and spectral properties as well as ultraviolet (UV) continuum morphology by obtaining reliable EW$_0$ histograms for a statistical sample of galaxies and by assessing the fraction of objects with large equivalent widths. We used integral field spectroscopy from MUSE combined with broad-band data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure EW$_0$. We analysed the emission lines of $1920$ Lyman $\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) detected in the full MUSE-Wide (one hour exposure time) and MUSE-Deep (ten hour exposure time) surveys and found UV continuum counterparts in archival HST data. We fitted the UV continuum photometric images using the Galfit software to gain morphological information on the rest-UV emission and fitted the spectra obtained from MUSE to determine the double peak fraction, asymmetry, full-width at half maximum, and flux of the Lyman $\alpha$ line. The two surveys show different histograms of Lyman $\alpha$ EW$_0$. In MUSE-Wide, $20\%$ of objects have EW$_0 > 240$ \r{A}, while this fraction is only $11\%$ in MUSE-Deep and $\approx 16\%$ for the full sample. This includes objects without HST continuum counterparts (one-third of our sample), for which we give lower limits for EW$_0$. The object with the highest securely measured EW$_0$ has EW$_0=589 \pm 193$ \r{A} (the highest lower limit being EW$_0=4464$ \r{A}). We investigate the connection between EW$_0$ and Lyman $\alpha$ spectral or UV continuum morphological properties. The survey depth has to be taken into account when studying EW$_0$ distributions. We find that in general, high EW$_0$ objects can have a wide range of spectral and UV morphological properties, which might reflect that the underlying causes for high EW$_0$ values are equally varied. Combining 66 ultraviolet (UV) spectra and ancillary data from the Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and 23 LyC observations by earlier studies, we form a statistical sample of star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 0.3$ to study the role of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) gas in the leakage of ionizing radiation. We first constrain the massive star content (ages and metallicities) and UV attenuation, by fitting the stellar continuum with a combination of simple stellar population models. The models, together with accurate LyC flux measurements, allow to determine the absolute LyC photon escape fraction for each galaxy ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$). We measure the equivalent widths and residual fluxes of multiple HI and low-ionization state (LIS) lines, and the geometrical covering fraction adopting the picket-fence model. The $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ spans a wide range, with a median (0.16, 0.84 quantiles) of 0.04 (0.02, 0.20), and 50 out of the 89 galaxies detected in the LyC. The HI and LIS line equivalent widths scale with the UV luminosity and attenuation, and inversely with the residual flux of the lines. The HI and LIS residual fluxes are correlated, indicating that the neutral gas is spatially traced by the LIS transitions. We find the observed trends of the absorption lines and the UV attenuation are primarily driven by the covering fraction. The non-uniform gas coverage demonstrates that LyC photons escape through low-column density channels in the ISM. The equivalent widths and residual fluxes of the UV lines strongly correlate with $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$: strong LyC leakers show weak absorption lines, low UV attenuation, and large Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths. We finally show that simultaneous UV absorption line and dust attenuation measurements can predict, on average, the escape fraction of galaxies and the method can be applied to galaxies across a wide redshift range., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics on December 16, 2021. The origins of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons responsible for the reionization of the universe are as of yet unknown and highly contested. Detecting LyC photons from the epoch of reionization is not possible due to absorption by the intergalactic medium, which has prompted the development of several indirect diagnostics to infer the rate at which galaxies contribute LyC photons to reionize the universe by studying lower-redshift analogs. We present the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) comprising measurements made with HST/COS for a z=0.2-0.4 sample of 66 galaxies. After careful processing of the FUV spectra, we obtain a total of 35 Lyman continuum emitters (LCEs) detected with 97.725% confidence, nearly tripling the number of known local LCEs. We estimate escape fractions from the detected LyC flux and upper limits on the undetected LyC flux, finding a range of LyC escape fractions up to 50%. Of the 35 LzLCS LCEs, 12 have LyC escape fractions greater than 5%, more than doubling the number of known local LCEs with cosmologically relevant LyC escape., Comment: ApJS, accepted. 28 pages, 19 figures, 8 tables. Hydrogen Ly${\alpha}$ haloes (LAHs) are commonly used as a tracer of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at high redshifts. In this work, we aim to explore the existence of Ly${\alpha}$ haloes around individual UV-selected galaxies, rather than around Ly${\alpha}$ emitters (LAEs), at high redshifts. Our sample was continuum-selected with F775W<=27.5, and spectroscopic redshifts were assigned or constrained for all the sources thanks to the deepest (100- to 140-hour) existing Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data with adaptive optics. The final sample includes 21 galaxies that are purely F775W-magnitude selected within the redshift range z=2.9-4.4 and within a UV magnitude range -20<=M1500<= -18, thus avoiding any bias toward LAEs. We tested whether galaxy's Ly${\alpha}$ emission is significantly more extended than the MUSE PSF-convolved continuum component. We find 17 LAHs and four non-LAHs. We report the first individual detections of extended Ly${\alpha}$ emission around non-LAEs. The Ly${\alpha}$ halo fraction is thus as high as $81.0^{+10.3}_{-11.2}$%, which is close to that for LAEs at z=3-6 in the literature. This implies that UV-selected galaxies generally have a large amount of hydrogen in their CGM. We derived the mean surface brightness (SB) profile for our LAHs with cosmic dimming corrections and find that Ly${\alpha}$ emission extends to 5.4 arcsec (~40 physical kpc at the midpoint redshift z=3.6) above the typical 1${\sigma}$ SB limit. The incidence rate of surrounding gas detected in Ly${\alpha}$ per one-dimensional line of sight per unit redshift, dn/dz, is estimated to be $0.76^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$ for galaxies with M1500<= -18 mag at z~3.7. Directly characterising the first generations of stars in distant galaxies is a key quest of observational cosmology. We present a case study of ID53 at z=4.77, the UV-brightest (but L*) star-forming galaxy at z>3 in the MUSE eXtremely Deep Field with a mass of $10^9$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition to very strong Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission, we clearly detect the (stellar) continuum and an NV P-Cygni feature, interstellar absorption, fine-structure emission and nebular CIV emission lines in the 140 hr spectrum. Continuum emission from two spatially resolved components in Hubble Space Telescope data are blended in the MUSE data, but we show that the nebular CIV emission originates from a subcomponent of the galaxy. The UV spectrum can be fit with recent BPASS stellar population models combined with single-burst or continuous star formation histories (SFHs), a standard initial mass function, and an attenuation law. Models with a young age and low metallicity (log10(age/yr)=6.5-7.6 and [Z/H]=-2.15 to -1.15) are preferred. The intrinsic H$\alpha$ luminosity of the best-fit models is an order of magnitude higher than the H$\alpha$ luminosity inferred from Spitzer/IRAC data, which either suggests a high escape fraction of ionising photons, a high relative attenuation of nebular to stellar dust, or a complex SFH. The metallicity appears lower than the metallicity in more massive galaxies at z=3-5, consistent with the scenario according to which younger galaxies have lower metallicities. This chemical immaturity likely facilitates Ly$\alpha$ escape, explaining why the Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width is anti-correlated with stellar metallicity. Finally, we stress that uncertainties in SFHs impose a challenge for future inferences of the stellar metallicity of young galaxies. We use Hubble space telescope data of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies to investigate properties of Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) halos, Ly$\alpha$ morphology, and the star-forming characteristics of galaxies. We study how the morphology of Ly$\alpha$ emission is related to other Ly$\alpha$ observables. Furthermore, we study the interdependencies of Ly$\alpha$ morphological quantities. We studied the spatial extent of Ly$\alpha$ using surface brightness profiles in i) using circular apertures and ii) within faint Ly$\alpha$ isophotes. We measured the average intensity and the size of the regions with a high star formation rate density. The morphology of the galaxies was quantified by computing centroid position, axis ratio, and position angle in the Ly$\alpha$, ultraviolet continuum, and I band maps. We found that galaxies with more extended star-forming regions possess larger Ly$\alpha$ halos. Furthermore, galaxies with more elongated Ly$\alpha$ morphology are also more extended in Ly$\alpha$. Our data suggest that Ly$\alpha$ bright galaxies appear rounder in their Ly$\alpha$ morphology, and there is less of a contribution from their Ly$\alpha$ halo to their overall luminosity. We compared our results with studies at high redshift and found that whilst the Ly$\alpha$ extent in the inner regions of the galaxies in our sample are similar to the high$-z$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs), Ly$\alpha$ halos are more extended in high$-z$ LAEs. Our analysis suggests that the Ly$\alpha$ morphology affects the measurement of other observable quantities concerning Ly$\alpha$ emission, and some of the conclusions drawn from high redshift LAEs might be biased towards galaxies with specific Ly$\alpha$ shapes. In particular, faint Ly$\alpha$ emitters have larger Ly$\alpha$ scale lengths and halo fractions. This implies that faint Ly$\alpha$ emitters are harder to detect at high redshift than previously believed.

The shape of the ionising spectra of galaxies is a key ingredient to reveal their physical properties and to our understanding of the ionising background radiation. A long-standing unsolved problem is the presence of HeII nebular emission in many low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. This emission requires ionising photons with energy >54 eV, which are not produced in sufficient amounts by normal stellar populations. To examine if high mass X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources (HMXB/ULX) can explain the observed HeII nebular emission and how their presence alters other emission lines, we compute photoionisation models of galaxies including such sources. We combine spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of integrated stellar populations with constrained SEDs of ULXs to obtain composite spectra with varying amounts of X-ray luminosity, parameterised by Lx/SFR. With these we compute photoionisation models to predict the emission line fluxes of the optical recombination lines of H and He+, and the main metal lines of OIII, OII, OI, and NII. The predictions are then compared to a large sample of low-metallicity galaxies. We find that it is possible to reproduce the nebular HeII and other line observations with our spectra and with amounts of Lx/SFR compatible with the observations. Our work suggests that HMBX/ULX could be responsible for the observed nebular HeII emission. However, the strengths of the high and low ionisation lines, such as HeII and OI, depend strongly on the X-ray contribution and on the assumed SEDs of the high energy source(s); the latter are poorly known., Comment: Accepted by A&A on 13/09/2021

We report the discovery of J0121+0025, an extremely luminous and young star-forming galaxy (M_UV = -24.11, log[L_Lya / erg s^-1] = 43.8) at z = 3.244 showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (f_esc,abs ~ 40%). High signal-to-noise ratio rest-frame UV spectroscopy with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveals a high significance (7.9 sigma) emission below the Lyman limit (< 912A), with a flux density level f_900A = 0.78 +/- 0.10 uJy, and strong P-Cygni in wind lines of OVI 1033A, NV 1240A and CIV 1550A that are indicative of a young age of the starburst (<10 Myr). The spectrum is rich in stellar photospheric features, for which a significant contribution of an AGN at these wavelengths is ruled out. Low-ionization ISM absorption lines are also detected, but are weak (EW0 ~ 1A) and show large residual intensities, suggesting a clumpy geometry of the gas with a non-unity covering fraction or a highly ionized ISM. The contribution of a foreground and AGN contamination to the LyC signal is unlikely. Deep optical to Spitzer/IRAC 4.5um imaging show that the spectral energy distribution of J0121+0025 is dominated by the emission of the young starburst, with log(M*/Msun) = 9.9 +/- 0.1 and SFR = 981 +/- 232 Msun yr^-1. J0121+0025 is the most powerful LyC emitter known among the star-forming galaxy population. The discovery of such luminous and young starburst leaking LyC radiation suggests that a significant fraction of LyC photons can escape in sources with a wide range of UV luminosities and are not restricted to the faintest ones as previously thought. The Ly$\alpha$ emission line is one of the most promising probes of cosmic reionisation but isolating the signature of a change in the ionisation state of the IGM is challenging because of intrinsic evolution and internal radiation transfer effects. We present the first study of the evolution of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAE) during the epoch of reionisation based on a full radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation that is able to capture both the large-scale process of reionisation and the small-scale properties of galaxies. We predict the Ly$\alpha$ emission of galaxies in the $10^3$ cMpc$^3$ SPHINX simulation at $6\leq z\leq9$ by computing the full Ly$\alpha$ radiation transfer from ISM to IGM scales. SPHINX is able to reproduce many observational constraints such as the UV/Ly$\alpha$ luminosity functions and stellar mass functions at z $\geq$ 6 for the dynamical range probed by our simulation ($M_{\rm 1500}\gtrsim-18$, $L_{\rm Ly\alpha}\lesssim10^{42}$ erg/s, $M_{\star}\lesssim10^9$ M$_{\odot}$). As intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ emission and internal Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions barely evolve from $z=6$ to 9, the observed suppression of Ly$\alpha$ luminosities with increasing redshift is fully attributed to IGM absorption. For most observable galaxies ($M_{\rm 1500}\lesssim-16$), the Ly$\alpha$ line profiles are slightly shifted to the red due to internal radiative transfer effects which mitigates the effect of IGM absorption. Overall, the enhanced Ly$\alpha$ suppression during reionisation traces the IGM neutral fraction $x_{\rm HI}$ well but the predicted amplitude of this reduction is a strong function of the Ly$\alpha$ peak shift, which is set at ISM/CGM scales. We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of nine low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z, in the range 0.3179-0.4524, with stellar masses Mstar < 10^8 M and veruny high specific star-formation rates sSFR~150-630 Gyr^{-1}, aiming to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on stellar mass and some other characteristics of the galaxy. We detect LyC emission in four out of nine galaxies with escape fractions, fesc(LyC), in the range of 11-35 per cent, and establish upper limits for fesc(LyC) in the remaining five galaxies. We observe a narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks in seven galaxies and likely more complex Ly-alpha profiles in the two remaining galaxies. The velocity separation between the peaks Vsep varies in the range from ~229 km/s to ~512 km/s. Our additional data on low-mass galaxies confirm and strengthen the tight anti-correlation between fesc(LyC) and Vsep found for previous low-redshift galaxy samples with higher stellar masses. Vsep remains the best indirect indicator of LyC leakage. It is better than O32 on which fesc(LyC) depends weakly, with a large scatter. We report the discovery of diffuse extended Ly-alpha emission from redshift 3.1 to 4.5, tracing cosmic web filaments on scales of 2.5-4 comoving Mpc. These structures have been observed in overdensities of Ly-alpha emitters in the MUSE Extremely Deep Field, a 140 hour deep MUSE observation located in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Among the 22 overdense regions identified, 5 are likely to harbor very extended Ly-alpha emission at high significance with an average surface brightness of $\mathrm{5 \times 10^{-20} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2}}$. Remarkably, 70% of the total Ly-alpha luminosity from these filaments comes from beyond the circumgalactic medium of any identified Ly-alpha emitters. Fluorescent Ly-alpha emission powered by the cosmic UV background can only account for less than 34% of this emission at z$\approx$3 and for not more than 10% at higher redshift. We find that the bulk of this diffuse emission can be reproduced by the unresolved Ly-alpha emission of a large population of ultra low luminosity Ly-alpha emitters ($\mathrm{<10^{40} erg s^{-1}}$), provided that the faint end of the Ly-alpha luminosity function is steep ($\alpha \lessapprox -1.8$), it extends down to luminosities lower than $\mathrm{10^{38} - 10^{37} erg s^{-1}}$ and the clustering of these Ly-alpha emitters is significant (filling factor $< 1/6$). If these Ly-alpha emitters are powered by star formation, then this implies their luminosity function needs to extend down to star formation rates $\mathrm{< 10^{-4} M_\odot yr^{-1}}$. These observations provide the first detection of the cosmic web in Ly-alpha emission in typical filamentary environments and the first observational clue for the existence of a large population of ultra low luminosity Ly-alpha emitters at high redshift., Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures

The neutral intergalactic medium above redshift 6 is opaque to ionizing radiation, therefore one needs indirect measurements of the escape fraction of ionizing photons from galaxies of this epoch. Low-ionization state absorption lines are a common feature in the spectrum of galaxies, showing a diversity of strengths and shapes. Since these lines indicate the presence of neutral gas in front of the stars, they have been proposed to carry information on the escape of ionizing radiation from galaxies. We study which processes are responsible for the shape of the absorption lines, to better understand their origin. We then explore whether the absorption lines can be used to predict the escape fractions. Using a radiation-hydrodynamical zoom-in simulation and the radiative transfer code RASCAS, we generate mock CII 1334 and LyB lines of a virtual galaxy at redshift 3 as seen from many directions of observation. We also compute the escape fraction of ionizing photons in those directions and look for correlations between the lines and the escape fractions. We find that the resulting mock absorption lines are comparable to observations and that the lines and the escape fractions vary strongly depending on the direction of observation. Gas velocity and dust always affect the absorption profile significantly. We find no strong correlations between observable LyB or CII 1334 and the escape fraction. After correcting the continuum for attenuation by dust to recover the intrinsic continuum, the residual flux of CII 1334 correlates well with the escape fraction for directions with a dust corrected residual flux larger than 30%. For other directions, the relations have a strong dispersion, and the residual flux overestimates the escape fraction for most cases. Concerning LyB, the residual flux after dust correction does not correlate with the escape fraction but can be used as a lower limit. We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-alpha profile in a galaxy at $z=6.803$, A370p\_z1, in the parallel Frontier Field of Abell 370. The velocity separation between the blue and red peaks of the Lyman-$\alpha$ profile ($\Delta v=101_{-19}^{+38} (\pm48)\,\text{km s}^{-1}$) suggests an extremely high escape fraction of ionising photons $> 59(51)\% (2\sigma)$. The spectral energy distribution indicates a young ($50$ Myr), star-forming ($12\pm 6 \, \rm{M}_\odot \rm{yr}^{-1}$) galaxy with an IRAC excess implying strong [OIII]+H$\beta$ emission. On the basis of the high escape fraction measured, we demonstrate that A370p\_z1 was solely capable of creating an ionised bubble sufficiently large to account for the blue component of its Lyman-alpha profile. We discuss whether A370p\_z1 may be representative of a larger population of luminous $z\simeq7$ double-peaked Lyman-alpha emitting sources with high escape fractions that self-ionised their surroundings without contributions from associated UV-fainter sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 7 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We present a study of the intersection between the populations of star forming galaxies (SFGs) selected as either Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9 - 6.7, within the same volume of universe sampled by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) behind the Hubble Frontier Fields lensing cluster A2744. We define three samples of star-forming galaxies: LBG galaxies with an LAE counterpart (92 galaxies), LBG galaxies without LAE counterpart (408 galaxies) and LAE galaxies without an LBG counterpart (46 galaxies). All these galaxies are intrinsically faint due to the lensing nature of the sample (Muv $\ge$ -20.5). The fraction of LAEs among all selected SFGs increases with redshift up to z $\sim$ 6 and decreases for higher redshifts. The evolution of LAE/LBG populations with UV magnitude and Lya luminosity shows that the LAE selection is able to identify intrinsically UV faint galaxies with Muv $\ge$ -15 that are typically missed in the deepest lensing photometric surveys. The LBG population seems to fairly represent the total population of SFGs down to Muv$\sim$-15. Galaxies with Muv$<-17$ tend to have SFRLya$<$SFRuv, whereas the opposite trend is observed within our sample for faint galaxies with Muv$>-17$, including galaxies only detected by their Lya emission, with a large scatter. These trends, previously observed in other samples of SFGs at high-$z$, are seen here for very faint Muv$\sim -15$ galaxies, much fainter than in previous studies. There is no clear evidence, based on the present results, for an intrinsic difference on the properties of the two populations selected as LBG and/or LAE. The observed trends could be explained by a combination of several facts, like the existence of different star-formation regimes, the dust content, the relative distribution and morphology of dust and stars, or the stellar populations

One of the outstanding problems of current observational cosmology is to understand the nature of sources that produced the bulk of the ionizing radiation after the Cosmic Dark Age. Direct detection of these reionization sources is practically infeasible at high redshift due to the steep decline of intergalactic medium transmission. However, a number of low-redshift analogs emitting Lyman continuum at~900 Angstrom ~restframe are now detected at $z< 0.4$ and there are detections in the range $ 2.5< z< 3.5$ also. Here, we report the detection of Lyman continuum emission with a high escape fraction (>20%) from a low-mass clumpy galaxy at z=1.42, in the middle of the redshift range where no detection has been made before and near the peak of the Cosmic Star-formation history. The observation was made in the Hubble Extreme Deep field by the wide-field Ultra-Violet-Imaging Telescope onboard AstroSat. This is the first detection of Extreme Ultraviolet radiation from a distant galaxy at a rest-frame wavelength of 600 Angstrom, and it opens up a new window to constrain the shape of the ionization spectrum. Using new VLT/XShooter spectral observations we analyse the physical properties of five z~0.3-0.4 confirmed LyC leakers. Strong resonant MgII 2796,2803 emission lines (I(2796,2803)/I(Hbeta)=10-38 per cent) and non-resonant FeII* 2612,2626 emission lines are observed in spectra of five and three galaxies, respectively. We find high electron densities Ne~400cm-3, significantly higher than in typical low-z, but comparable to those measured in z~2-3 star-forming galaxies. The galaxies have a mean value of logN/O=-1.16, close to the maximum values found for star-forming (SF) galaxies in the metallicity range of 12+logO/H=7.7-8.1. All 11 low-z LyC emitting galaxies found by Izotov et al. (2016, 2018), including the ones considered in the present study, are characterised by high EW(Hbeta)~200-400A, high ionisation parameter (log(U)=-2.5 to -1.7), high average ionising photon production efficiency \xi= 10^{25.54} Hz erg-1 and hard ionising radiation. On the BPT diagram we find the same offset of our leakers from low-$z$ main-sequence SFGs as that for local analogues of LBGs and extreme SF galaxies at z~2-3. We confirm the effectiveness of the HeI emission lines diagnostics proposed by Izotov et al. (2017) in searching for LyC leaker candidates and find that their intensity ratios correspond to those in a median with low neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)=10^{17}-5x10^{17} cm-2 that permit leakage of LyC radiation, likely due to their density-bounded HII regions., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) spectral properties of faint Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.93. We compute various averaged spectra of LAEs sub-sampled on the basis of their observational (e.g., Ly$\alpha$ strength, UV magnitude and spectral slope) and physical (e.g., stellar mass and star-formation rate) properties. We search for UV spectral features other than Ly$\alpha$, such as higher-ionization nebular emission lines and absorption features. We successfully observe the OIII]1666 and CIII]909 collisionally excited emission lines and the HeII1640 recombination feature, as well as the resonant CIV1550 doublet either in emission or P-Cygni. We compare the observed spectral properties of the different mean spectra and find the emission lines to vary with the observational and physical properties of the LAEs. In particular, the mean spectra of LAEs with larger Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths, fainter UV magnitudes, bluer UV spectral slopes and lower stellar masses show the strongest nebular emission. The line ratios of these lines are similar to those measured in the spectra of local metal-poor galaxies, while their equivalent widths are weaker compared to the handful of extreme values detected in individual spectra of z>2 galaxies. This suggests that weak UV features are likely ubiquitous in high z, low-mass and faint LAEs. Identifying the mechanisms driving the escape of Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons is crucial to find Lyman Continuum Emitter (LCE) candidates. To understand the physical properties involved in the leakage of LyC photons, we investigate the connection between the HI covering fraction, HI velocity width, the Lyman alpha (LyA) properties and escape of LyC photons in a sample of 22 star-forming galaxies including 13 LCEs. We fit the stellar continua, dust attenuation, and absorption lines between 920 and 1300 A to extract the HI covering fractions and dust attenuation. Additionally, we measure the HI velocity widths of the optically thick Lyman series and derive the LyA equivalent widths (EW), escape fractions (fesc), peak velocities and fluxes at the minimum of the LyA profiles. Overall, we highlight strong correlations between the presence of low HI covering fractions and (1) low LyA peak velocities; (2) more flux at the profile minimum; and (3) larger EW(LyA), fesc(LyA), and fesc(LyC). Hence, low column density channels are crucial ISM ingredients for the leakage of LyC and LyA photons. Additionally, galaxies with narrower HI absorption velocity widths have higher LyA equivalent widths, larger LyA escape fractions, and lower LyA peak velocity separations. This suggests that these galaxies have low HI column density. Finally, we find that dust regulates the amount of LyA and LyC radiation that actually escapes the ISM. Overall, the ISM porosity is one origin of strong LyA emission and enables the escape of ionizing photons in low-z leakers. However, this is not enough to explain the largest fesc(LyC) observed, which indicates that the most extreme LCEs are likely density-bounded along all lines of sight to the observer. The Lya emitter (LAE) fraction, X_LAE, is a potentially powerful probe of the evolution of the intergalactic neutral hydrogen gas fraction. However, uncertainties in the measurement of X_LAE are still debated. Thanks to deep data obtained with MUSE, we can measure the evolution of X_LAE homogeneously over a wide redshift range of z~3-6 for UV-faint galaxies (down to M_1500~-17.75). This is significantly fainter than in former studies, and allows us to probe the bulk of the population of high-z star-forming galaxies. We construct a UV-complete photo-redshift sample following UV luminosity functions and measure the Lya emission with MUSE using the second data release from the MUSE HUDF Survey. We derive the redshift evolution of X_LAE for M_1500 in [-21.75;-17.75] for the first time with a equivalent width range EW(Lya)>=65 A and find low values of X_ LAE<~30% at z<~6. For M_1500 in [-20.25;-18.75] and EW(Lya)<~25 A, our X_LAE values are consistent with those in the literature within 1sigma at z<~5, but our median values are systematically lower than reported values over the whole redshift range. In addition, we do not find a significant dependence of X_LAE on M_1500 for EW(Lya)>~50 A at z~3-4, in contrast with previous work. The differences in X_LAE mainly arise from selection biases for Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the literature: UV-faint LBGs are more easily selected if they have strong Lya emission, hence X_LAE is biased towards higher values. Our results suggest either a lower increase of X_LAE towards z~6 than previously suggested, or even a turnover of X_LAE at z~5.5, which may be the signature of a late or patchy reionization process. We compared our results with predictions from a cosmological galaxy evolution model. We present spatially resolved maps of six individually-detected Lyman alpha haloes (LAHs) as well as a first statistical analysis of the Lyman alpha (Lya) spectral signature in the circum-galactic medium of high-redshift star-forming galaxies using MUSE. Our resolved spectroscopic analysis of the LAHs reveals significant intrahalo variations of the Lya line profile. Using a three-dimensional two-component model for the Lya emission, we measure the full width at half maximum (FWHM), the peak velocity shift and the asymmetry of the Lya line in the core and in the halo of 19 galaxies. We find that the Lya line shape is statistically different in the halo compared to the core for ~40% of our galaxies. Similarly to object-by-object based studies and a recent resolved study using lensing, we find a correlation between the peak velocity shift and the width of the Lya line both at the interstellar and circum-galactic scales. While there is a lack of correlation between the spectral properties and the spatial scale lengths of our LAHs, we find a correlation between the width of the line in the LAH and the halo flux fraction. Interestingly, UV bright galaxies show broader, more redshifted and less asymmetric Lya lines in their haloes. The most significant correlation found is for the FWHM of the line and the UV continuum slope of the galaxy, suggesting that the redder galaxies have broader Lya lines. The generally broad and red line shapes found in the halo component suggests that the Lya haloes are powered either by scattering processes through an outflowing medium, fluorescent emission from outflowing cold clumps of gas, or a mix of both. Resonant lines are powerful probes of the interstellar and circumgalactic medium of galaxies. Their transfer in gas being a complex process, the interpretation of their observational signatures, either in absorption or in emission, is often not straightforward. Numerical radiative transfer simulations are needed to accurately describe the travel of resonant line photons in real and in frequency space, and to produce realistic mock observations. This paper introduces RASCAS, a new public 3D radiative transfer code developed to perform the propagation of any resonant line in numerical simulations of astrophysical objects. RASCAS was designed to be easily customisable and to process simulations of arbitrarily large sizes on large supercomputers. RASCAS performs radiative transfer on an adaptive mesh with an octree structure using the Monte Carlo technique. RASCAS features full MPI parallelisation, domain decomposition, adaptive load-balancing, and a standard peeling algorithm to construct mock observations. The radiative transport of resonant line photons through different mixes of species (e.g. \ion{H}{i}, \ion{Si}{ii}, \ion{Mg}{ii}, \ion{Fe}{ii}), including their interaction with dust, is implemented in a modular fashion to allow new transitions to be easily added to the code. RASCAS is very accurate and efficient. It shows perfect scaling up to a minimum of a thousand cores. It has been fully tested against radiative transfer problems with analytic solutions and against various test cases proposed in the literature. Although it was designed to describe accurately the many scatterings of line photons, RASCAS may also be used to propagate photons at any wavelength (e.g. stellar continuum or fluorescent lines), or to cast millions of rays to integrate the optical depths of ionising photons, making it highly versatile., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Galactic outflows are thought to eject baryons back out to the circum-galactic medium (CGM). Studies based on metal absorption lines (MgII in particular) in the spectra of background quasars indicate that the gas is ejected anisotropically, with galactic winds likely leaving the host in a bi-conical flow perpendicular to the galaxy disk. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of an outflow from a z = 0.7 "green-valley" galaxy (log($M_*$/$\mathrm{M}_\odot$) = 9.9; SFR = 0.5 $\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) probed by two background sources part of the MUSE Gas Flow and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey. Thanks to a fortuitous configuration with a background quasar (SDSSJ1358+1145) and a bright background galaxy at $z = 1.4$, both at impact parameters of $\approx 15\,\mathrm{kpc}$, we can - for the first time - probe both the receding and approaching components of a putative galactic outflow around a distant galaxy. We measure a significant velocity shift between the MgII absorption from the two sightlines ($84\pm17\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$), which is consistent with the expectation from our simple fiducial wind model, possibly combined with an extended disk contribution., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of eight compact star-forming galaxies at redshifts z=0.02811-0.06540, with low oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H)=7.43-7.82 and extremely high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727~22-39, aiming to study the properties of Ly-alpha emission in such conditions. We find a diversity in Ly-alpha properties. In five galaxies Ly-alpha emission line is strong, with equivalent width (EW) in the range 45-190A. In the remaining galaxies, weak Ly-alpha emission with EW(Ly-alpha)~2-7A is superposed on a broad Ly-alpha absorption line, indicating a high neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)~(1-3)x10^21 cm^-2. We examine the relation between the Ly-alpha escape fraction fesc(Ly-alpha) and the Lyman continuum escape fraction fesc(LyC), using direct measures of the latter in eleven low-redshift LyC leakers, to verify whether fesc(Ly-alpha) can be an indirect measure of escaping LyC radiation. The usefulness of O32, of the Ly-alpha equivalent width EW(Ly-alpha) and of the Ly-alpha peak separation Vsep as indirect indicators of Ly-alpha leakage is also discussed. It is shown that there is no correlation between O32 and fesc(Ly-alpha). We find an increase of fesc(Ly-alpha) with increasing EW(Ly-alpha) for EW(Ly-alpha)<100A, but for higher EW(Ly-alpha)>150A the fesc(Ly-alpha) is nearly constant attaining the value of ~0.25. We find an anticorrelation between fesc(Ly-alpha) and Vsep, though not as tight as the one found earlier between fesc(LyC) and Vsep. Lyman$-\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission lines are typically found to be redshifted with respect to the systemic redshifts of galaxies, likely due to resonant scattering of Ly$\alpha$ photons. Here we measure the average velocity offset for a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) with a median Ly$\alpha$ flux (luminosity) of $\approx 10^{-17}~\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ ($\approx10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) and a median star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx1.3 \rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (not corrected for possible dust extinction), detected by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer as part of our MUSEQuBES circumgalactic medium (CGM) survey. By postulating that the stacked CGM absorption profiles of these LAEs, probed by 8 background quasars, must be centered on the systemic redshift, we measure an average velocity offset, V$_{\rm offset} = 171 \pm 8$ $\rm km s^{-1}$, between the Ly$\alpha$ emission peak and the systemic redshift. The observed V$_{\rm offset}$ is lower by factors of $\approx1.4$ and $\approx2.6$ compared to the velocity offsets measured for narrow-band selected LAEs and Lyman break galaxies, respectively, which probe galaxies with higher masses and SFRs. Consistent with earlier studies based on direct measurements for individual objects, we find that the V$_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with the full width at half-maximum of the red peak of the Ly$\alpha$ line, and anti-correlated with the rest-frame equivalent width. Moreover, we find that $V_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with SFR with a sub-linear scaling relation, V$_{\rm offset}\propto \rm SFR^{0.16\pm0.03}$. Adopting the mass scaling for main sequence galaxies, such a relation suggests that V$_{\rm offset}$ scales with the circular velocity of the dark matter halos hosting the LAEs., Comment: Published on 15 May, 2020 along with an erratum (Ref: MNRAS 498, 4424, 2020, doi:10.1093/mnras/staa2668), since Fig. 2 has not been updated in the published version. We present an analysis of HI Lyman-alpha emission in deep VLT/MUSE observations of two highly magnified and extended galaxies at z=3.5 and 4.03, including a newly discovered, almost complete Einstein ring. While these Lyman-alpha haloes are intrinsically similar to the ones typically seen in other MUSE deep fields, the benefits of gravitational lensing allows us to construct exceptionally detailed maps of Lyman-alpha line properties at sub-kpc scales. By combining all multiple images, we are able to observe complex structures in the Lyman-alpha emission and uncover small (~ 120 km/s in Lyman-alpha peak shift), but significant at > 4 sigma, systematic variations in the shape of the Lyman-alpha line profile within each halo. Indeed, we observe a global trend for the line peak shift to become redder at large radii, together with a strong correlation between the peak wavelength and line width. This systematic intrahalo variation is markedly similar to the object-to-object variations obtained from the integrated properties of recent large samples. Regions of high surface brightness correspond to relatively small line shifts, which could indicate that Lyman-alpha emission escapes preferentially from regions where the line profile has been less severely affected by scattering of Lyman-alpha photons., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the concept of BlueMUSE, a blue-optimised, medium spectral resolution, panoramic integral field spectrograph based on the MUSE concept and proposed for the Very Large Telescope. With an optimised transmission down to 350 nm, a larger FoV (1.4 x 1.4 arcmin$^2$) and a higher spectral resolution compared to MUSE, BlueMUSE will open up a new range of galactic and extragalactic science cases allowed by its specific capabilities, beyond those possible with MUSE. For example a survey of massive stars in our galaxy and the Local Group will increase the known population of massive stars by a factor $>$100, to answer key questions about their evolution. Deep field observations with BlueMUSE will also significantly increase samples of Lyman-alpha emitters, spanning the era of Cosmic Noon. This will revolutionise the study of the distant Universe: allowing the intergalactic medium to be detected unambiguously in emission, enabling the study of the exchange of baryons between galaxies and their surroundings. By 2030, at a time when the focus of most of the new large facilities (ELT, JWST) will be on the infra-red, BlueMUSE will be a unique facility, outperforming any ELT instrument in the Blue/UV. Deep optical spectroscopic surveys of galaxies provide us a unique opportunity to investigate rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) emission line properties of galaxies at ${z \sim 2-4.5}$. Here we combine VLT/MUSE Guaranteed Time Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South, Ultra Deep Field, COSMOS, and several quasar fields with other publicly available data from VLT/VIMOS and VLT/FORS2 to construct a catalogue of HeII${\lambda}$1640 emitters at ${z\sim2}$. The deepest areas of our MUSE pointings reach a ${3\sigma}$ line flux limit of 3.1${\times}$10-19 erg/ s/ cm$^2$. After discarding broad line active galactic nuclei we find 13 HeII${\lambda}$1640 detections from MUSE with a median MUV = $-20.1$ and 21 tentative HeII${\lambda}$1640 detections from other public surveys. Excluding Ly${\alpha}$, all except two galaxies in our sample show at least one other rest-UV emission line, with CIII]${\lambda}$1907,${\lambda}$1909 being the most prominent. We use multi-wavelength data available in the Hubble legacy fields to derive basic galaxy properties of our sample via spectral energy distribution fitting techniques. Taking advantage of the high quality spectra obtained by MUSE (${\sim10 - 30}$h of exposure time per pointing), we use photo-ionisation models to study the rest-UV emission line diagnostics of the HeII${\lambda}$1640 emitters. Line ratios of our sample can be reproduced by moderately sub-solar photo-ionisation models, however, we find that including effects of binary stars lead to degeneracies in most free parameters. Even after considering extra ionising photons produced by extreme sub-solar metallicity binary stellar models, photo-ionisation models are unable to reproduce rest-frame HeII${\lambda}$1640 equivalent widths (${\sim}$ 0.2 - 10 A), thus additional mechanisms are necessary in models to match the observed HeII${\lambda}$1640 properties., Comment: Accepted to A&A, 31 pages, 17 figures

Understanding the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman alpha (Lya) photons from molecular clouds is one of the keys to constraining the reionization history of the Universe and the evolution of galaxies at high redshift. Using a set of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with adaptive mesh refinement, we investigate how photons propagate and escape from turbulent clouds with different masses, star formation efficiencies (SFEs), and metallicities, as well as with different models of stellar spectra and supernova feedback. We find that the escape fractions in both LyC and Lya are generally increasing with time if the cloud is efficiently dispersed by radiation and supernova feedback. When the total SFE is low (1% of the cloud mass), 0.1-5% of LyC photons leave the metal-poor cloud, whereas the fractions increase to 20-70% in clouds with a 10% SFE. LyC photons escape more efficiently if gas metallicity is lower, if the upper mass limit in the stellar initial mass function is higher, if binary interactions are allowed in the evolution of stars, or if additional strong radiation pressure, such as Lya pressure, is present. As a result, the number of escaping LyC photons can easily vary by a factor of $\sim4$ on cloud scales. The escape fractions of Lya photons are systemically higher (60-80%) than those of LyC photons despite large optical depths at line centre ($\tau_0\sim10^6-10^9$). Scattering of Lya photons is already significant on cloud scales, leading to double-peaked profiles with peak separations of $v_{\rm sep}\sim400\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ during the initial stage of the cloud evolution, while it becomes narrower than $v_{\rm sep} \le 150 \, {\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ in the LyC bright phase. Comparisons with observations of low-redshift galaxies suggest that Lya photons require further interactions with neutral hydrogen to reproduce their velocity offset for a given LyC escape fraction., Comment: 23 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using an ultra-deep blind survey with the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope, we obtain spectroscopic redshifts to a depth never explored before: galaxies with observed magnitudes m > 30 - 32. Specifically, we detect objects via Lyman-alpha emission at 2.9 < z < 6.7 without individual continuum counterparts in areas covered by the deepest optical/near-infrared imaging taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. In total, we find 102 such objects in 9 square arcminutes at these redshifts. Detailed stacking analyses confirm the Lyman-alpha emission as well as the 1216 Angstrom-breaks and faint UV continua (M_UV ~ -15). This makes them the faintest spectroscopically-confirmed objects at these redshifts, similar to the sources believed to reionize the universe. A simple model for the expected fraction of detected/undetected Lyman-alpha emitters as a function of luminosity is consistent with these objects being the high-equivalent width tail of the normal Lyman-alpha-emitter population at these redshifts., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters
