The coastal zones are subject to rapid development with growing and conflicting demands on the natural resources, and often they are subject to irreversible degradation. Many coastal aquifers around the world are experiencing some level of salinity encroachment. The most common geophysical method used for the groundwater investigation is Geoelectrical method. In this study, a total of 15 vertical electrical sounding (VES) were carried out using Schlumberger electrode arrangement along Miri coast. The field data was interpreted by using curve matching techniques using IPI2Win software. 53% of the area is dominated by 'Q' type curve indicates decreasing resistivity with depth. The resistivity spatial maps and pseudo cross-sections reveal that the low-resistivity values were observed in the northern side of the study area due to the natural saline water intrusion in the deeper aquifer and anthropogenic influence in the shallow aquifer.

Abstract

Base drag, arising from flow separation at the blunt base of a body can be a sizeable fraction of total drag in the context of projectiles, missiles and after bodies of fighter aircrafts. Computational and experimental investigation for a hemispherical flight vehicle body of length 500mm and diameter 50mm was conducted for the purpose of investigating the base drag. Three case studies were conducted to investigate the flow field around the flight vehicle at flow velocities of 20m/s, 30m/s and 50m/s at zero angle of attack (AoA). A flight vehicle with different configurations namely flat base, nozzle at the base and boat tail was investigated at different AoA of -2 °, 0° and +2°. Abstract

This research aimed at developing comprehensive assessments of physicochemical quality of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes at Dalcheon in Ulsan City, Korea. The mean concentration of major ions represented as follows: Ca (94.3 mg/L) > Mg (41.7 mg/L) > Na (19.2 mg/L) > K (3.2 mg/L) for cations and SO4 (351 mg/L) > HCO3 (169 mg/L) > Cl (19 mg/L) for anions. Thematic maps for physicochemical parameters of groundwater were prepared, classified, weighted, and integrated in GIS method with fuzzy logic. The maps exhibited that suitable zone of drinking and irrigation purpose occupied in SE, NE, and NW sectors. The undesirable zone of drinking purpose was observed in SW and central parts and that of irrigation was in the western part of the study area. This was influenced by improperly treated effluents from an abandoned iron ore mine, irrigation, and domestic fields. By grouping analysis, groundwater types were classified into Ca(HCO3)2, (Ca,Mg)Cl2, and CaCl2, and CaHCO3 was the most predominant type. Grouping analysis also showed three types of irrigation water such as C1S1, C1S2, and C1S3. C1S3 type of high salinity to low sodium hazard was the most dominant in the study area. Equilibrium processes elucidated the groundwater samples were in the saturated to undersaturated condition with respect to aragonite, calcite, dolomite, and gypsum due to precipitation and deposition processes. Cluster analysis suggested that high contents of SO4 and HCO3 with low Cl was related with water-rock interactions and along with mining impact. This study showed that the effluents discharged from mining waste was the main sources of groundwater quality deterioration.

Abstract

This research evaluated the groundwater quality of Thiruthuraipoondi city in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, India during summer and monsoon seasons in 2011. Eighteen groundwater samples were collected throughout Thiruthuraipoondi city and its surroundings. This case study represented that the combined analysis of ordinary kriging and CCME WQI in GIS was effective to evaluate the groundwater pollution sources, as well as for the spatial interpolation and assessment of groundwater quality. Groundwater samples evaluated by CCME WQI values belonged to good quality sectors in summer and monsoon, but to poor quality sectors at small patches of south and southeast directions in both seasons. Moreover, the higher concentration of Na and Cl was designated as irrigation waste and also seawater incursion. Based on the Piper plot, most of groundwater samples belong to Ca–Mg–Cl2type and followed by Ca–Cl2and Na–Cl types in summer season. In case of monsoon season, most of the groundwater samples dropped in Na–Cl type and followed by Ca–Mg–Cl2and Ca–Cl2water types. In Wilcox diagram, most of groundwater samples in both seasons occupied S2 and C4 categories of medium sodium hazard and very high salinity hazard, respectively. This research represented that higher concentration Na and Cl resulted from anthropogenic activities and seawater incursion due to overpumping of groundwater. An effective groundwater management plan of artificial recharge is necessary to conserve valuable groundwater resources in Thiruthuraipoondi city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study evaluated groundwater quality of the coastal aquifer in Nagapattinam district with intensive agricultural activities in the southern part of India. Chemical components such as pH, EC, TDS, major cations and anions were used to identify seawater intrusion. Fifty-two groundwater samples were collected from dug and bore wells in this region during summer and monsoon seasons, 2011. EC, TDS, Na and Cl were higher in summer than in monsoon. The correlation and two-way-joining cluster analyses clearly show that groundwater quality is mainly controlled by seawater intrusion and other anthropogenic sources. Modified Hill-Piper exhibits that most of the samples belong to water contaminated with gypsum sector. The interpretation of Gibbs plot represents the groundwater samples that fall in evaporation and rock weathering zone, and other samples are affiliated to various anthropogenic activities. Based on Na %, SAR, chloride, hardness and Wilcox classification, the groundwater is moderately suitable for agriculture. This region is vulnerable to seawater intrusion during summer due to the severe pumping of groundwater. In groundwater quality maps produced by inverse distance weighting of ArcGIS, some good and medium patches could be used for agriculture to a certain extent. The northern, southern and central parts of the study area fell in poor quality regions because of seawater intrusion and infiltration of irrigation water contaminated with pesticides and fertilizers.
