56. A Bibliography of Doctoral Dissertations on Aging from American Institutions of Higher Learning, 1934-19691.

Moore, Julie L., Tuchin, Mort S., and Birren, James E.
- Abstract
The purpose of this bibliography is to collate and disseminate information about doctoral dissertations on aging. As a source of literature on aging doctoral dissertations are under-utilized because of difficulties in identifying titles and obtaining copies of the dissertations. Dissertations often remain unpublished, or if published, are so abridged as to eliminate much of the critical review of relevant literature and other material of value to the scholar. In view of the rising interest in problems of aging it was anticipated that the present bibliography would provide a useful and convenient access to original research material not usually found in bibliographies of published literature. An analysis of the material from the viewpoint of graduates training was previously presented (Moore & Birren, 1971). The titles in this bibliography were compiled from and its predecessors from 1934-1968. Some 1969 titles were available from and were included. However, the bibliographic control of dissertation literature is relatively negligible at this time. It is quite possible that some dissertations dealing with the aging between 1934 and 1968 have been omitted because they were not listed in the sources that the authors searched or because the topic of aging was not identified in the title and no abstract was available. Other unavoidable bibliographic reasons may have led to omissions despite the fact that the authors have tried to be as comprehensive as possible. Omissions do occur and are regretted. The authors welcome any additions and corrections. The sections of the bibliography are: biological aspects, behavioral aspects, social aspects, health and health services, education (both adult and professional), and literary themes dealing with old age and death. The latter section provides a historical context to the view of aging and old age throughout the centuries of great literature. An author index and a subject index, modified from a keyword-in-context index, is provided to assist in identifying the more specialized topics of interest. The abstract number from is included to aid in the evaluation of the dissertation if the reader is interested. Inasmuch as many of these (50%) do not have abstracts, the title alone has been the basis for inclusion. In this respect, there are bound to be deficiencies in the subject arrangement, but it is hoped that they are few and relatively minor. Material that dealt exclusively with early life changes, e.g., growth and development, was not included insofar as the content could be judged from the information available. - Abstract
Published in 1998. In the past year the 300 largest global companies increased their research budgets by an average of 12 per cent. Governments now measure how technologically advanced they are as they worry about their trade balances and unemployment. Many public sector organizations, for example hospitals, universities and welfare agencies, are struggling to keep up with the rate of technological progress. The selections in this book provide a number of insights on how private firms can be more innovative and public sector organizations can keep up with rapid technological change. They emphasize both radical and incremental innovations and both product and process innovation. In particular the advanced manufacturing technologies so central to Piore and Sabel's'Second Industrial Divide'receive a great deal of attention. Finally, the consequences of innovation are the focus of the last section.

- Abstract
This Handbook is a timely compilation dedicated to exploring a rare diversity of perspectives and content on the development, successes, reforms and challenges within China's contemporary welfare system. It showcases an extensive introduction and 20 original chapters by leading and emerging area specialists who explore a century of welfare provision from the Nationalist era, up to and concentrating on economic reform and marketisation (1978 to the present). Organised around five key concerns (social security and welfare; emerging issues and actors, including gender issues, NGOs, and philanthropy; gaps; and future challenges, such as population ageing and environmental pressures) chapters draw on original case-based research from diverse disciplines and perspectives, engage existing literature and further key debates. Key historical insights into welfare provision in the Chinese context serve as a starting point with the remaining chapters combining a review of the literature with original case studies. The book offers novel empirical research and includes topics often not discussed in the literature on welfare in China, including: mental health, highly educated rural-to-urban migrants, NGOs as welfare providers, China's overseas welfare aid, environmental challenges and welfare, amongst others. This comprehensive and multidisciplinary Handbook will be of immense value to researchers and scholars in the fields of China Studies, social policy, the welfare state, politics and related areas. Accessible to a non-specialist audience interested in China's welfare development and welfare states more broadly, it will also serve as a useful resource for undergraduates.Contributors Include: E. - Abstract

- Abstract
Through the twentieth century, the nature of medical practice has changed more quickly, more dramatically, and far more publicly than that of any other profession in Canada. In this study Bernard Blishen identifies the social and political pressures on the medical profession and assesses how it has responded to them.Among the changes doctors have confronted are third-party pressures from government and hospital bureaucracies, greater public knowledge, improved technology, recognition of patients'rights, and legal challenges. Blishen discusses how the doctors achieved dominance in the health field, reviews demographic changes within the profession and the larger population, examines data on the changing health status of Canadians, and charts physician supply against patient demand. He finds that the chief source of his profession's collegial strength has been the homogeneity of its membership. This homogeneity is declining with increasing numbers of women and ethnic groups in the profession and increasing specialization.Blishen offers a comprehensive, quantified overview of a profession in transition, and suggests the implications of its changes for all Canadians.

- Abstract
Emphasizing practical considerations in designing and carrying out primary health care programs, this is a superb introductory text for public health students. It will be of particular interest to those working with rural populations in developing countries with limited resources. Part I covers policy issues and the conceptual framework for planning, management and evaluation. Part II reviews essential methods for effective implementation, considering the economic, political, epidemiologic, demographic and other components that contribute to the assessment of health needs and resource allocation. Part III discusses specific tools and techniques in program management related to decision analysis, network analysis, survey techniques, cost-effectiveness appraisal, and much more. Comprehensive and informative, this highly practical work is the result of many years of experience in teaching and working with health care planners from around the world.
