The diffusion of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) polycations in coacervates formed from PDADMAC and the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) is studied. Several ensembles of PDADMAC polycations with different diffusivities are observed.

Abstract

The evolution of internal concentration profile of methanol in two-dimensional (2-D) pore structure of ferrierite crystal is measured with the help of interference microscopy technique. The results have indicated the importance of measuring the evolution of concentration profiles, as this is crucial in determining the direction of internal transport, the presence of internal structural defects and surface/internal transport barriers.

Abstract

The pulsed field gradient NMR diffusion measurements and molecular dynamics simulations show that the typical values of sticking coefficient are close to one. The infrared (IR) uptake measurements indicate that the values of sticking coefficient have high orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The intracrystalline diffusion of methane and n-butane molecules in MFI-type zeolites at several temperatures and over a wide range of diffusion times is investigated applying the PFG NMR technique. The results of the study reveals that diffusion coefficients progressively decreasing with increasing root-meansquare displacements.

Abstract

Pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR is applied to measure self-diffusion coefficients of 1,3,5 tri-isopropyl-benzene in the particles of several industrial FCC catalysts having different systems of meso- and macropores. Relating these diffusivities to the self-diffusion coefficient of 1,3,5 tri-isopropyl-benzene in the liquid phase, the tortuosity factors for diffusion in the meso- and macropores of the particles were obtained. The values of the tortuosity factors were found to increase with a increasing volumetric fraction of the small (< 20 nm) meso- and macropores in the total intraparticle volume.

Abstract

Molecular transport through the nanoporous particles, in particular, zeolite crystallites, is influenced both by intracrystalline diffusion and surface resistance. In comparison to zeolite crystallites with ideal structure, molecular transport in real-world zeolite particles may often be influenced by the surface barriers resulting from various defects at the surface of the crystallite. The potentials of the combined use of the pulsed field gradient NMR and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations for exploration of the surface permeability of nanoporous particles are demonstrated.

73. Suppression of the anomalous relationship between diffusivities of cations and anions by water in imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Abstract

Proton pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR technique at high magnetic field (17.6 T) and high magnetic field gradients (up to 30 T/m) is applied to study diffusion of the anions and cations in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([Emim][ETSO4]) with and without water. Excellent NMR spectral resolution attained by this technique allowed high-precision monitoring of the diffusivities of the anions, cations and water in a single experiment. The PFG NMR data show that the anomalous relationship between the ion diffusivities, i.e. larger self-diffusion coefficient of the bulkier [Emim] cation than that of the less bulky [ETSO4] anion, becomes much less pronounced due to addition of water into the ionic liquid. This observation is explained by the distortion of the local structure in the ionic liquid by water molecules leading to a possible loss of the diffusion anisotropy for the cation diffusion. The reported experimental data are in a qualitative agreement with the most recent results of molecular dynamics simulations (see references 9 and 10).

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate the potential of pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR spectroscopy to reveal detailed knowledge of self-diffusion of light gases and light gas mixtures in carbon molecular sieve membranes on small length scales. PFG NMR is used to investigate intra-membrane diffusion of carbon dioxide and methane for a broad range of temperatures and mean square displacements in a carbon molecular sieve membrane derived from a 6FDA/BPDA-DAM polyimide film. Diffusion is investigated with single component sorbates as well as with a carbon dioxide / methane mixture. Results obtained from these studies are compared and discussed.

Abstract

Diffusion of tetrafluoromethane in aluminosilicate nanotubes was studied by means of 13C pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR at 297 K. The measured data allow the estimation of the diffusivity of tetrafluoromethane inside the nanotubes as well as the diffusivity for these molecules undergoing fast exchange between many nanotubes. The results support the assumption about the one-dimensional nature of the tetrafluoromethane diffusion inside nanotubes.

The reported diffusion studies are focused on room temperature ionic liquids and their mixtures with carbon dioxide or water as well as on multicomponent lipid bilayers. Both types of systems exhibit a well-defined structural organization on various length scales. Our experimental approach allows correlating this structural organization with the transport properties. The diffusion data were obtained by proton and carbon-13 PFG NMR. The experimental studies were in some cases complemented by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations.

Relating these diffusivities to the self-diffusion coefficient of 1,3,5 tri-isopropyl-benzene in the liquid phase, the tortuosity factors for diffusion in the meso- and macropores of the particles were obtained. The values of the tortuosity factors were found to increase with a increasing volumetric fraction of the small (< 20 nm) meso- and macropores in the total intraparticle volume.
