- Abstract
The WG1 “Rural NEETs Social Networks and Social Inclusion” focuses on the role of social networks (family, friends, neighbours, and rural communities at large) and of social inclusion processes (risk and protective factors at the rural community level) for rural NEETs quality-of-life. How are social networks organised around rural NEETs? What are their main characteristics? What are the main factors and processes at the rural community level involved in rural NEETs social inclusion? How do social networks and rural community factors contribute to rural NEETs overall quality of life? How do these networks com- pensate for the lack of inadequacy of formal/institutional support in rural areas? Those are some of the questions that guide our work and inspire our collaboration.

- Abstract
This study aimed to assess the fluctuations of antibody serum titers for Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in naturally infected crossbred cows during gestation and to investigate transplacental transmission of T. gondii; 51 cows were monitored during pregnancy by monthly serologic testing by indirect fluorescent antibody test. 33 cows were seronegative for both N. caninum and T. gondii, 10 were seropositive only for N. caninum, 5 were seropositive only for T. gondii, and 3 were seropositive for both N. caninum and T. gondii. In both protozoan infections, great variation in antibody levels in pregnant cows was observed, and there was significant increase (p<0.05) in the comparison between the averages of serological titration per trimester. There was a significant correlation (p<0.05) between month and probability of seropositivity for T. gondii. We conclude that pregnancy influences antibody titers of crossbred cows naturally infected with N. caninum and/or T. gondii, and that serologic testing for T. gondii in pregnant cows from the sixth month of gestation onward may decrease the number of false negative results., O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a flutuação dos títulos séricos de anticorpos para Neospora caninum e Toxoplasma gondii em vacas mestiças naturalmente infectadas durante a gestação e investigar a transmissão transplacentária desses protozoários.

Background and purpose: Brain health is essential for health, well-being, productivity and creativity across the entire life. Its definition goes beyond the absence of disease embracing all cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social functions which are necessary to cope with life situations. Methods: The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Brain Health Strategy responds to the high and increasing burden of neurological disorders. It aims to develop a non-disease-, non-age-centred holistic and positive approach (‘one brain, one life, one approach’) to prevent neurological disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, stroke, epilepsy, headache/migraine, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, brain cancer) but also to preserve brain health and promote recovery after brain damage. Results: The pillars of the EAN Brain Health Strategy are (1) to contribute to a global and international brain health approach (together with national and subspecialty societies, other medical societies, the World Health Organization, the World Federation of Neurology, patients' organizations, industry and other stakeholders); (2) to support the 47 European national neurological societies, healthcare and policymakers in the implementation of integrated and people-centred campaigns; (3) to foster research (e.g., on prevention of neurological disorders, determinants and assessments of brain health); (4) to promote education of students, neurologists, general practitioners, other medical specialists and health professionals, patients, caregivers and the general public; (5) to raise public awareness of neurological disorders and brain health. Conclusions: By adopting this ‘one brain, one life, one approach’ strategy in cooperation with partner societies, international organizations and policymakers, a significant number of neurological disorders may be prevented whilst the overall well-being of individuals is enhanced by maintaining brain health through the life course.

- Abstract

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that, in severe cases, progresses with extremely clinically relevant complications, directly impacting the morbidity and mortality of the population. The disease was first discovered in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Thus, the studies were published in the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, being the equivalent of 41.67% in the year 2020, 50.00% in the year 2021 and about 8.33% in the year 2022. Therefore, most of the jobs were from Mexico with 33.33%, against 25.00% from Iran, 16.67% in Brazil, 16.67 % in the United States and 8.33% in Italy. In view of the exposed results, it was highlighted that the infection by COVID-19 in pregnant women negatively affected maternal health, being responsible for maternal injuries and/or death. Some epidemiological and clinical risk factors were associated with negative outcomes, as well as barriers to accessing health care.

73. Conceptual Variation or Incoherence? Textbook Discourse on Genes in Six Countries
- Author

Gericke, Niklas M., Hagberg, Mariana, and dos Santos, Vanessa Carvalho
- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate in a systematic and comparative way previous results of independent studies on the treatment of genes and gene function in high school textbooks from six different countries. We analyze how the conceptual variation within the scientific domain of Genetics regarding gene function models and gene concepts is transformed via the didactic transposition into school science textbooks. The results indicate that a common textbook discourse on genes and their function exist in textbooks from the different countries. The structure of science as represented by conceptual variation and the use of multiple models was present in all the textbooks. However, the existence of conceptual variation and multiple models is implicit in these textbooks, i.e., the "phenomenon" of conceptual variation and multiple models are not addressed explicitly, nor its consequences and, thus, it ends up introducing conceptual incoherence about the gene concept and its function "within" the textbooks. We conclude that within the found textbook-discourse ontological aspects of the academic disciplines of genetics and molecular biology were retained, but without their epistemological underpinnings; these are lost in the didactic transposition. These results are of interest since students might have problems reconstructing the correct scientific understanding from the transformed school science knowledge as depicted within the high school textbooks. Implications for textbook writing as well as teaching are discussed in the paper.

This work presents a didactic sequence applied in two ninth grade classes of elementary school in a private school in the Federal District. The construction of the sequence was based in a historical case study in the investigative modality, the historical episode worked on is the discovery of the electrical nature of lightning, carried out by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century. The intention of the proposal is to promote the discussion of aspects inherent to the nature of science and to introduce the concepts of electric charge and electric discharge. The use of investigative narratives allows the student to be placed in a simulation of scientific production faithful to reality and, with this, to be able to reflect and internalize the aspects inherent to the scientist's practice. The proposal also has experimental, practical and demonstrative activities, which seek to help students visualize and understand the phenomena, as well as arouse interest in the subject addressed., Este trabalho apresenta uma sequência didática aplicada em duas turmas de nono ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola particular do Distrito Federal.

- Abstract
Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD; MIM #242650) is a rare multisystemic genetic diseases, whose diagnostic is challenge. Additional data to complete the complex puzzle of PCD genomic analysis is of upmost importance to better understand PCD pathophysiology. We here present a female case with PCD and infertility. We also present the evaluation of the patient family, including her twin sister, also with PCD and infertility. Methods: Confirmation of the PCD clinical diagnosis was performed through assessment of cilia motility, by high-speed video microscopy (HSVM), axoneme ultrastructure, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and genetic characterization, by whole exome sequence (WES). Gene expression studies used qPCR for mRNA expression and immunofluorescence to determine cell protein localization. Results: HSVM analysis revealed that the ciliary beat frequency was decreased, with mostly cilia presenting dyskinetic movements. TEM analysis showed partial absence of both dynein arms associated with high ciliary deviation. WES analysis evidenced a homozygous nonsense variant in the DRC1 gene, belonging to the dynein regulatory complex (DRC). Expression of DRC1 mRNA and protein were decreased. Expression analysis of the DRC1 mRNA also evidenced an interaction with other DRC components. Family analysis revealed the same homozygous variant in the twin sister and, in heterozygosity in parents and daughters. Both the patient and her twin sister presented idiopathic infertility. Conclusions: Overall, our results contribute to increase understanding of the genetic factors involved in the pathophysiology of PCD and infertility, and highlight the interaction of different genes in the patient phenotype, which should be further explored, as it may justify the highly heterogeneity observed in PCD patients. Understanding the genetic etiology of PCD is of paramount importance to assist the diagnosis and development of newer therapies.

- Abstract
A major source of difficulties in promoting students' understanding of genetics lies in the presentation of gene concepts and models in an inconsistent and largely ahistorical manner, merely amalgamated in hybrid views, as if they constituted linear developments, instead of being built for different purposes and employed in specific contexts. In this paper, we report the results of a study about how textbooks can provide the grounds for the students' construction of such hybrid views about genes. These views are a key problem in genetics teaching, because they make it more difficult that students properly understand this central biological concept and strengthen genetic deterministic ideas, which characterize a widespread discourse about genes in the public opinion. We analyzed 18 textbooks using categorical content analysis, employing categories derived from the literature addressing the historical development of gene models and concepts. Our findings indicate that the analyzed textbooks do convey hybrid views about genes, with no correspondence to scientific models related to this biological concept. These views reinforce genetic deterministic discourses and may lead students to serious misunderstandings about the nature of genes and their role in living systems, with consequences to future learning about genetics.

© 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, The landscape of genetic forms of Parkinson's diseases (PD) has grown exponentially in recent years. Today, around 10% of PD cases are estimated to be of genetic etiology. However, the link between parkinsonism or tremor and chromosome disorders, both numerical and structural, has been neglected. We reviewed the occurrence and characteristics of parkinsonism and tremor syndromes in patients with chromosomic disorders. We searched PubMed for articles published until December 2018, using the non-MESH terms "Chromosomopathy," "karyotype," "chromosome," "aneuploidy," "deletion," "inversion," "insertion," "duplication," and "Parkinson," "Parkinsonism," "Tremor," and "Parkinsonian disorder." We restricted the search to human studies and selected articles for further analysis after abstract review. Tremor syndromes in which patients had another possible clinical reason for syndromes were excluded, as well as tremor syndromes associated with point mutations, imprinting syndromes, and patients presenting with other hyperkinetic disorders. Fifty-four articles were reviewed. Aneuploidies of sex chromosomes were the most common chromosomopathy. These patients more commonly exhibited postural and kinetic tremor, often meeting the description of essential tremor. In structural chromosomopathies, the most frequent association was PD and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, but we found case reports and case series of several additional deletion and duplication syndromes.

Background and purpose COVID‐19‐related acute neurological phenotypes are being increasingly recognised, with neurological complications reported in more than 30% of hospitalised patients. However, multicentric studies providing a population‐based perspective are lacking. Methods We conducted a retrospective multicentric study at five hospitals in Northern Portugal, representing 45.1% of all hospitalised patients in this region, between 1 March and 30 June 2020. Results Among 1261 hospitalised COVID‐19 patients, 457 (36.2%) presented neurological manifestations, corresponding to a rate of 357 per 1000 in the North Region. Patients with neurologic manifestations were younger (68.0 vs. 71.2 years, p = 0.002), and the most frequent neurological symptoms were headache (13.4%), delirium (10.1%), and impairment of consciousness (9.7%). Acute well‐defined central nervous system (CNS) involvement was found in 19.1% of patients, corresponding to a rate of 217 per 1000 hospitalised patients in the whole region. Assuming that all patients with severe neurological events were hospitalised, we extrapolated our results to all COVID‐19 patients in the region, estimating that 116 will have a severe neurological event, corresponding to a rate of nine per 1000 (95% CI = 7–11). Overall case fatality in patients presenting neurological manifestations was 19.8%, increasing to 32.6% among those with acute well‐defined CNS involvement. Conclusions We characterised the population of hospitalised COVID‐19 patients in Northern Portugal and found that neurological symptoms are common and associated with a high degree of disability at discharge. CNS involvement with criteria for in‐hospital admission was observed in a significant proportion of patients. This knowledge provides the tools for adequate health planning and for improving COVID‐19 multidisciplinary patient care.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the anoctamin 3 (ANO3) gene cause autosomal dominant craniocervical dystonia (DYT24), presenting from childhood to mid‐life. However, in the past years, the clinical spectrum of this disorder has widened. We present a family with heterogeneous presentation, exemplifying phenotypic diversity in DYT24. CASES: The index case presented with myoclonic dystonia at age 10. His family history was remarkable for cervical dystonia with myoclonus in his grandfather, cervical and upper limb dystonia along with dopa‐responsive parkinsonism in his father and lower‐limb dystonia in his teenage sister. Magnetic resonance imaging and blood work‐ups of all the affected family members were normal. The genetic panel for inherited forms of dystonia disclosed a point mutation c.1787C > A (p.Ser596Tyr) segregated in all affected family members. CONCLUSIONS: ANO3 mutations usually present with craniocervical dystonia and rarely generalized or leg dystonia. This family exemplifies the heterogeneous presentation of this disorder as well as a wide phenotypic variability within the same family.

Amblyomma sculptum is a common human-biting tick in Brazil, where it plays an important role as a vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of the Brazilian spotted fever. Herein, we studied the seasonal dynamics of A. sculptum in an urban area of the Cerrado biome in midwestern Brazil, where human rickettsiosis is endemic. Ticks were collected in two sites located within the campus of Federal University of Goiás. The collections were done by dragging, flagging and visual search. In total, 117,685 ticks were collected, including 100,627 Amblyomma spp. larvae, 10,055 nymphs and 6977 adults of A. sculptum, and one nymph and 25 adults of Amblyomma dubitatum. The highest peak of larvae occurred in June 2018 and in July 2019, whereas nymphs peaked in July 2018 and September 2019. Adults reached their highest numbers in March 2018 and November 2019. These data suggest that A. sculptum develops one generation per year in this urban area of the Cerrado biome in midwestern Brazil. Interestingly, the peak of nymphs occurred during the same period of all confirmed cases of rickettsiosis in Goiás, suggesting a possible relationship between the seasonal dynamics of this tick stage and rickettsiosis transmission in this state.

The research focuses on investigating education of deaf students as an essential service, capable of making them citizens with an identity, knowledge of their places and being part of a space, thus eliminating barriers that prevent them from being builders of their personal and social development in society, specifically in the educational field. Making this education accessible to all, with methodologies, instruments, professionals and the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras, in promoting inclusion, equity and quality of education for deaf students in the basic education of schools in the municipality of Tutóia – MA. The article proposes to show the reality or utopia of the LIBRAS interpreter in the education of the deaf students. The work was developed with a descriptive exploratory investigation based on reports of experiences in three schools in the municipality in the year 2021, with a qualitative approach. To certify the study, Google Scholar and Scielo platform and literary review in general were used. As a result, the literary review and observations in schools, found the non-presence of the Libras interpreter. The active teachers know about the existence of the signed language, but they do not have practical knowledge that favors the teaching process in the two languages guaranteed in Brazil: LIBRAS and Portuguese. In addition to the teacher responsible for the class, the teaching network needs to offer these professionals initial and continuing training on teaching for the deaf students and their language, capable of providing structural and pedagogical conditions for the learning characteristics of deaf students, without taking away the right to be a citizen. Background and purpose: Neurological disorders pose a profound unmet medical need for which new solutions are urgently needed. The consideration of both biological (sex) and socio-cultural (gender) differences between men and women is necessary to identify more efficacious, safer and tailored treatments. Approaches for putting sex and gender medicine into practice have gathered momentum across Europe, but it is currently unclear to what extent they have been implemented in the field of neurology and neuroscience. Methods: We mapped current activities in research, funding and education aimed at integrating sex and gender consideration in neuroscience and neurology in Europe. We examined and analyzed data gathered from literature searches, policy documents and reports by the European Commission and national funding agencies, web-based searches, Web of Science, and searches of project databases of funding agencies. An informative/non-systematic search was performed for sections on policies and funding, education, and basic research, while a systematic literature and database review was conducted for quantitative analysis of research output and funded projects in terms of sex and gender analysis. Results: Our mapping shows that there is a growing interest in and attention given to sex and gender considerations in neurological fields, both from funding agencies and researchers. However, most activities, especially for education, are limited to the individual motivation of researchers and are not organically built within curricula and strategic research priorities. Conclusion: We recommend actions that might help increase the consideration of sex and gender specifically in the field of neuroscience and neurology.

(1) Background: The excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation in women may reflect an early or advanced state of a metabolic disorder and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease than other types of obesity. This study aimed to determine the predictor variables (demographic information, anthropometric data, and blood biomarkers) for changes in VAT in adult women. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with women aged 18–59 years attending nutritional consultation at the Centro Universitário de Brasília (CEUB)’s nutrition school clinic, Brazil. All participants’ medical records were reviewed throughout the study and data of interest were collected. Various anthropometric measurements and biochemical exams were performed and analyzed in a univariate logistic regression model to identify the possible risk factors predictors for the presence of altered VAT. (3) Results: Our logistic regression model considered body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, lipid accumulation product (LAP), and waist–hip ratio (WHR) as predictors of altered VAT. (4) Conclusion: LAP has a robust predictive capacity for changes in visceral fat in adult women, followed by WHR and BMI, making these variables effective in assessing the risk for changes in visceral fat and their inclusion essential in the individual and collective clinical practice.

To descriptively analyze the epidemiological data, clinical stage, and outcomes of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and to estimate the influence of clinical stage and treatment type on overall and disease-free survival. We retrospectively analyzed epidemiological data from the São Paulo Cancer Center Foundation database relative to patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma diagnosed between 2004 and 2014 in the state of São Paulo. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to assess factors associated with the outcomes. A forward stepwise selection procedure was used. Survival curves were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the Gehan-Breslow-Wilcoxon test.A total of 8075 individuals with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were identified. Of these, 86.3% were diagnosed at an advanced stage and 13.7% at an early stage. Only 27.2% of patients were treated surgically, whereas 57.5% were treated medically. Patients undergoing surgery had longer overall survival than those receiving medical treatment in both early- and advanced-stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. However, there was no significant difference in disease-free survival between surgical and medical treatment. No significant difference in disease-free survival between medical and surgical treatment suggests similar complete remission rates with both approaches. Patients receiving medical treatment had shorter overall survival, which may be due to complications from chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, we cannot confirm this relationship based on the data provided by the São Paulo Cancer Center Foundation. Prospective studies are warranted to assess whether the lower overall survival rate in patients receiving medical treatment is secondary to complications from chemotherapy and radiotherapy.2C.
