We calculate the magnetic dipole moment of the Delta baryon using a background magnetic field on 2+1-flavors of clover fermions on anisotropic lattices. We focus on the finite volume effects that can be significant in background field studies, and thus we use two different spatial volumes in addition to several quark masses., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, contributed talk at Lattice 2008, to appear in the proceedings

Using only the current empirical information on the nucleon electromagnetic form factors we map out the transverse charge density in proton and neutron as viewed from a light front moving towards a transversely polarized nucleon. These charge densities are characterized by a dipole pattern, in addition to the monopole field corresponding with the unpolarized density. Furthermore, we use the latest empirical information on the $N \to \Delta$ transition form factors to map out the transition charge density which induces the $N \to \Delta$ excitation. This transition charge density in a transversely polarized $N$ and $\Delta$ contains both monopole, dipole and quadrupole patterns, the latter corresponding with a deformation of the hadron's charge distribution., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Polarized Compton scattering off the proton is studied within the framework of subtracted dispersion relations for photon energies up to 300 MeV. As a guideline for forthcoming experiments, we focus the attention on the role of the proton's spin polarizabilities and investigate the most favorable conditions to extract them with a minimum of model dependence. We conclude that a complete separation of the four spin polarizabilities is possible, at photon energies between threshold and the $\Delta(1232)$ region, provided one can achieve polarization measurements with an accuracy of a few percent., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

There has been much activity in the measurement of the elastic electromagnetic proton and neutron form factors in the last decade, and the quality of the data has been greatly improved by performing double polarization experiments, in comparison with previous unpolarized data. Here we review the experimental data base in view of the new results for the proton, and neutron, obtained at MIT-Bates, MAMI, and JLab. The rapid evolution of phenomenological models triggered by these high-precision experiments will be discussed, including the recent progress in the determination of the valence quark generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, as well as the steady rate of improvements made in the lattice QCD calculations., Comment: 71 pages, 43 figures (published version with typos corrected)

This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulation developed specifically for the VCS experiments below pion threshold that have been performed at MAMI and JLab. This simulation generates events according to the (Bethe-Heitler + Born) cross section behaviour and takes into account all relevant resolution-deteriorating effects. We estimate the reaction mechanisms for the photoproduction of the Theta^+(1540) resonance on the nucleon, through K and K^* Regge exchanges. We compare the size of the cross sections for the gamma n -> K^- Theta^+ and gamma p -> K^0 bar Theta^+ reactions, and investigate their sensitivity to the spin-parity assignments J^P = 1/2^\pm, 3/2^\pm for the Theta^+ resonance. The model allows to estimate the cross sections corresponding with a given upper bound on the width of the Theta^+. Within this model, the cross sections on the neutron are found to be around a factor 5 larger than the ones on the proton, due to the presence of charged K exchange for the reaction on a neutron target. Furthermore, the photon asymmetry is found to display a pronounced sensitivity to the parity of the Theta^+, making it a very promising observable to help determining the quantum numbers of the Theta^+ resonance., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures. We elaborate on a recently proposed extension of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule which is achieved by taking derivatives with respect to the anomalous magnetic moment. The new sum rule features a {\it linear} relation between the anomalous magnetic moment and the dispersion integral over a cross-section quantity. We find some analogy of the linearized form of the GDH sum rule with the `sideways dispersion relations'. As an example, we apply the linear sum rule to reproduce the famous Schwinger's correction to the magnetic moment in QED from a tree-level cross-section calculation and outline the procedure for computing the two-loop correction from a one-loop cross-section calculation. The polarizabilities of the electron in QED are considered as well by using the other forward-Compton-scattering sum rules. We also employ the sum rules to study the magnetic moment and polarizabilities of the nucleon in a relativistic chiral EFT framework. We discuss the links between Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) and elastic nucleon form factors. These links, in the form of sum rules, represent powerful constraints on parametrizations of GPDs. A Regge parametrization for GPDs at small momentum transfer, is extended to the large momentum transfer region and it is found to describe the basic features of proton and neutron electromagnetic form factor data. Radiative pion photoproduction in the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance region is studied with the aim to access the $\Delta^+(1232)$ magnetic dipole moment. We present a unitary model of the $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi N$ ($\pi N = \pi^0 p, \pi^+ n$) reactions, where the $\pi N$ rescattering is included in an on-shell approximation. In this model, the low energy theorem which couples the $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi N$ process in the limit of a soft final photon to the $\gamma p \to \pi N$ process is exactly satisfied. We study the sensitivity of the $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi^0 p$ process at higher values of the final photon energy to the $\Delta^+(1232)$ magnetic dipole moment. We compare our results with existing data and give predictions for forthcoming measurements of angular and energy distributions. It is found that the photon asymmetry and a helicity cross section are particularly sensitive to the $\Delta^+$ magnetic dipole moment., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures

We discuss the target and beam normal spin asymmetries in elastic electron-nucleon scattering which depend on the imaginary part of two-photon exchange processes between electron and nucleon. We express this imaginary part as a phase space integral over the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor on the nucleon. We use unitarity to model the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor in the resonance region in terms of $\gamma^* N \to \pi N$ electroabsorption amplitudes. Taking those amplitudes from a phenomenological analysis of pion electroproduction observables, we present results for beam and target normal single spin asymmetries for elastic electron-nucleon scattering for beam energies below 1 GeV and in the 1-3 GeV region, where several experiments are performed or are in progress., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures

We discuss the two-photon exchange contribution to observables which involve lepton helicity flip in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering. This contribution is accessed through the spin asymmetry for a lepton beam polarized normal to the scattering plane. We estimate this beam normal spin asymmetry at large momentum transfer using a parton model and we express the corresponding amplitude in terms of generalized parton distributions., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer through the scattering off a parton in the proton. We relate the process on the nucleon to the generalized parton distributions which also enter in other wide angle scattering processes. We find that when taking the polarization transfer determinations of the form factors as input, adding in the 2 photon correction, does reproduce the Rosenbluth data., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In view of the numerous experimental results recently released, we provide in this letter an update on the performance of our simple Regge model for strangeness electroproduction on the nucleon. Without refitting any parameters, a decent description of all measured observables and channels is achieved. We also give predictions for spin transfer observables, recently measured at Jefferson Lab which have high sensitivity to discriminate between different theoretical approaches., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The apparent discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and the polarization transfer method for the ratio of the electric to magnetic proton form factors can be explained by a two-photon exchange correction which does not destroy the linearity of the Rosenbluth plot. Though intrinsically small, of the order of a few percent of the cross section, this correction is kinematically enhanced in the Rosenbluth method while it is small for the polarization transfer method, at least in the range of (Q^2) where it has been used until now., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Using a soft pion theorem based on chiral symmetry and a $\Delta(1232)$ resonance model we propose an estimate for the production cross section of low energy pions in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process. In particular, we express the $e p \to e \gamma \pi N$ processes in terms of generalized parton distributions. We provide estimates of the contamination of the $e p \to e \gamma p$ DVCS observables due to this associated pion production processes when the experimental data are not fully exclusive, for a set of kinematical conditions representative of present or planned experiments at JLab, HERMES and COMPASS., Comment: 50 pages, 22 figures

We discuss the relations between Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) and nucleon resonances. We first briefly introduce the concept of "transition" GPDs. Then we discuss a straightforward application to the modelization of the N-$\Delta$ magnetic transition form factor. A reggeized model for \eta and \eta' photoproduction on the nucleon is presented. In this model, t-channel vector meson exchanges are described in terms of Regge trajectories to comply with the correct high energy behavior. We compare this reggeized model with an isobar model (\eta-MAID), where the t-channel exchanges are described by \rho and \omega poles. Both models contain the same resonance contributions, and describe current \gamma p \to \eta p data up to E_\gamma^{lab} = 2 GeV quite well, but only the reggeized model can be successfully extended to higher energies. For the \gamma p \to \eta' p reaction, the reggeized model is found to be able to give a satisfactory description. For the differential cross section data from SAPHIR, we find that the observed linear forward rise in cos(theta) near E_\gamma^{lab} = 1.6 GeV can be well described by the interference of an S11 resonance and the Regge trajectory exchanges without any need for an additional P-wave resonance., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, modified version to appear in Phys. A unified presentation is given on the use of dispersion relations in the real and virtual Compton scattering processes off the nucleon. The way in which dispersion relations for Compton scattering amplitudes establish connections between low energy nucleon structure quantities, such as polarizabilities or anomalous magnetic moments, and the nucleon excitation spectrum is reviewed. We discuss various sum rules for forward real and virtual Compton scattering, such as the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and its generalizations, the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule, as well as sum rules for forward nucleon polarizabilities, and review their experimental status. Subsequently, we address the general case of real Compton scattering (RCS). Various types of dispersion relations for RCS are presented as tools for extracting nucleon polarizabilities from the RCS data. The information on nucleon polarizabilities gained in this way is reviewed and the nucleon structure information encoded in these quantities is discussed. The dispersion relation formalism is then extended to virtual Compton scattering (VCS). The information on generalized nucleon polarizabilities extracted from recent VCS experiments is described, along with its interpretation in nucleon structure models. We investigate the helicity dependent twist-two and twist-three generalized parton distributions in light-front Hamiltonian QCD for a massive dressed quark target. Working in the kinematical region $\xi< x <1$, we obtain the splitting functions for the evolutions of twist-two quark and gluon distributions in a straightforward way. For the twist-three distribution, we find that all contributions are proportional to the quark mass and thus the twist-three distribution is directly related to the chiral symmetry breaking dynamics in light-front QCD. We also show that the off-forward Wandzura-Wilczek relation is violated in perturbative QCD for a massive dressed quark.We calculate the quark mass correction to the WW relation in the off-forward case and show that it is related to $h_1(x)$ in the forward limit. We extract the 'genuine twist three' part of the matrix element in the forward case and verify the Burkhardt Cottingham and Efremov-Leader-Teryaev sum rules., Comment: References and appendix added, minor points clarified, accepted for publication in PRD

The ratio between the anomalous magnetic moments of proton and neutron has been recently parametrized by the ratio of proton momentum fractions $M_{2}^{q_{val}}$. This ratio is evaluated using different constituent quark models, starting from the CQM density distributions and calculating the next-to leading order distributions. We show that this momentum fractions $M_{2}^{q_{val}}$ ratio is a sensitive test for SU(6)-breaking effects and therefore it is useful to distinguish among different CQMs. We investigate also the possibility of getting constraints on the formulation of quark structure models., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We study the double deeply virtual Compton scattering (DDVCS) process off the nucleon, through the scattering of a spacelike virtual photon with large virtuality resulting in the production of a timelike virtual photon, decaying into an e^+ e^- pair. This process is expressed in the Bjorken regime in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and it is shown that by varying the invariant mass of the lepton pair, one can directly extract the GPDs from the observables. We give predictions for the DDVCS cross section and beam helicity asymmetry and discuss its experimental feasibility., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the off-forward matrix element of the light cone vector operator for a dressed quark state in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory. We obtain the corresponding splitting functions in a straightforward way. We show that the end point singularity is canceled by the contribution from the normalization of state. Considering mixing with the gluon operator, we verify the helicity sum rule in perturbation theory. We show that the quark mass effects are suppressed in the plus component of the matrix element but in the transverse component, they are not suppressed. We emphasize that this is a particularity of the off-forward matrix element and is absent in the forward case., Comment: 12 pages, revtex, 1 figure

We outline in detail the properties of generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which contain new information on the structure of the nucleon and which enter the description of hard exclusive reactions. We highlight the physics content of the GPDs and discuss the quark GPDs in the large $N_c$ limit and within the context of the chiral quark-soliton model. Guided by this physics, we then present a general parametrization for these GPDs. Subsequently we discuss how these GPDs enter in a wide variety of hard electroproduction processes and how they can be accessed from them. We consider in detail deeply virtual Compton scattering and the hard electroproduction of mesons. We identify a list of key observables which are sensitive to the various nucleon structure aspects contained in the GPDs and which can be addressed by present and future experiments., Comment: 115 pages, 42 figures, typos corrected and minor changes

The $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi^0 p$ reaction in the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance region is investigated as a method to access the $\Delta^+(1232)$ magnetic dipole moment. The calculations are performed within the context of an effective Lagrangian model containing both the $\Delta$-resonant mechanism and a background of non-resonant contributions to the $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi^0 p$ reaction. Results are shown both for existing and forthcoming $\gamma p \to \gamma \pi^0 p$ experiments. In particular, the sensitivity of unpolarized cross sections and photon asymmetries to the $\Delta^+$ magnetic dipole moment is displayed for those forthcoming data., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

We present in detail a dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the proton from threshold into the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance region. Such a formalism can be used as a tool to extract the generalized polarizabilities of the proton from both unpolarized and polarized VCS observables over a larger energy range. We present calculations for existing and forthcoming VCS experiments and demonstrate that the VCS observables in the energy region between pion production threshold and the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance show an enhanced sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities., Comment: 51 pages, 15 figures

The reaction $\gamma+p\to\gamma'+p+\pi^0$ has been suggested as a means to deduce the $\Delta^+$ magnetic moment. The cross section for this process is estimated in both the constituent quark model and an effective Lagrangian procedure. The resulting total cross section is of the order 5-10 nb, which is at the limit of present experimental capabilities., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The QED radiative corrections to virtual Compton scattering (reaction $e p \to e p \gamma$) are calculated to first order in $\alpha_{em} \equiv e^2 / 4 \pi$. A detailed study is presented for the one-loop virtual corrections and for the first order soft-photon emission contributions. Furthermore, a full numerical calculation is given for the radiative tail, corresponding with photon emission processes, where the photon energy is not very small compared with the lepton momenta. We compare our results with existing works on elastic electron-proton scattering, and show for the $e p \to e p \gamma$ reaction how the observables are modified due to these first order QED radiative corrections. We show results for both unpolarized and polarized observables of the virtual Compton scattering in the low energy region (where one is sensitive to the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon), as well as for the deeply virtual Compton scattering., Comment: 74 pages, 19 figures

Fixed-$t$ subtracted dispersion relations are presented for Compton scattering off the nucleon at energies $E_\gamma \leq 500$ MeV, as a formalism to extract the nucleon polarizabilities from the data with a minimum of model dependence. The cross sections and transverse spin asymmetries in the hard exclusive electroproduction of decuplet baryons are calculated in the large N_c limit and found to be comparable to that of octet baryons. Large N_c selection rules for the production amplitudes are derived, leading to new sensitive tests of the spin aspects of the QCD chiral dynamics both in the nonstrange and strange sectors. Compton scattering results are used to probe proton structure via measurement of higher order polarizabilities. Values for $\alpha_{E2}^p,\beta_{E2}^p,\alpha_{E\nu}^p,$ $\beta_{E\nu}^p$ determined via dispersion relations are compared to predictions based upon chiral symmetry and from the constituent quark model. We give predictions for the leading order amplitudes for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. We give first estimates for the power corrections to these leading order amplitudes. We estimate the leading order amplitudes for exclusive photon and meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. As experimental investigations can currently only be envisaged at moderate values of Q^2, we estimate power corrections due to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the partons in the meson wavefunction and in the nucleon. To this aim the skewed parton distribution formalism is generalized so as to include the parton intrinsic transverse momentum dependence. Furthermore, for the meson electroproduction reactions, we calculate the soft overlap type contributions and compare with the leading order amplitudes. We give first estimates for these different power corrections in kinematics which are relevant for experiments in the near future., Comment: 59 pages, 21 figures

A simple and elegant model, based on Reggeized t-channel exchanges is succesful in reproducing the main features of all existing data of the reactions ep->eKLambda and ep->eKSigma. In particular, the original way gauge invariance is taken into account is found to be essential to describe the ratio between the Coulomb and the Transverse cross-sections at large Q2 that has been measured recently at JLab., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett

We present fixed-$t$ subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon at energies $E_\gamma \leq$ 500 MeV, as a formalism to extract the nucleon polarizabilities with a minimum of model dependence. The subtracted dispersion integrals are mainly saturated by $\pi N$ intermediate states in the $s$-channel $\gamma N \to \pi N \to \gamma N$ and $\pi \pi$ intermediate states in the $t$-channel $\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi \to N \bar N$. For the subprocess $\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi$, we construct a unitarized amplitude and find a good description of the available data. We show results for Compton scattering using the subtracted dispersion relations and display the sensitivity on the scalar polarizability difference $\alpha - \beta$ and the backward spin polarizability $\gamma_\pi$, which enter directly as fit parameters in the present formalism.

In this paper, after a brief summary of the properties of the Off-Forward Parton Distributions, we give some examples of what could be the experimental opportunities to access them at the current high-energy lepton facilities : JLab (E_e >= 6 GeV), HERMES (E_e = 27 GeV) and COMPASS (E_mu = 200 GeV)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We review the recent developments of virtual Compton scattering. We focus on the kinematical regimes which look the most promising. The threshold regime gives access to the generalized polarizabilities of the proton. The hard scattering regime allows tests of perturbative QCD predictions and of the valence quark wave function. The Bjorken regime is closely related to deep inelastic scattering. It gives access to the off-forward parton distributions which generalize the ordinary parton distributions and may shed a new light on the spin problem. We present a model to calculate cross sections for electroinduced two-nucleon emission from finite nuclei. Short-range correlations in the wave functions and meson-exchange contributions to the photoabsorption process are implemented. Effects of the short-range correlations are studied with the aid of a perturbation expansion method with various choices of the Jastrow correlation function. The model is used to investigate the relative importance of the different reaction mechanisms contributing to the A(e,e$'$pn) and A(e,e$'$pp) process. Representative examples for the target nuclei $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O and for kinematical conditions accessible with contemporary high-duty cycle electron accelerators are presented. A procedure is outlined to calculate the two-nucleon knockout contribution to the semi-exclusive (e,e$'$p) cross section. Using this technique we investigate in how far semi-exclusive (e,e$'$p) reactions can be used to detect high-momentum components in the nuclear spectral function., Comment: 51 pages, Latex, uses epsf.sty and elsart.sty, 17 figures (in eps format)

The similarities in the experimental indications for multinucleon mechanisms in $(\gamma,p)$ and $(e,e'p)$ processes are pointed out. For both types of reactions, the substantial role of two-nucleon emission processes for transitions to high excitation energies in the residual nucleus is stressed. A microscopic model for the calculation of the two-body knockout contributions to the inclusive $(\gamma,N)$ reaction is presented. It is based on an unfactorized formalism for the calculation of electromagnetically induced two-nucleon emission cross sections. The model is shown to yield a reasonable description of the overall behaviour of the $^{12}$C$(\gamma,p)$ and $^{12}$C$(\gamma,n)$ data at high excitation energies in the residual nucleus. In the calculations effects from non-resonant and resonant pion exchange currents are included. Photoabsorption on these currents are predicted to produce the major contributions to the exclusive $^{16}$O$(\gamma,n_0)^{15}$O process at photonenergies above the pion threshold. A model is presented to describe electromagnetically induced two-nucleon emission processes in a shell-model picture. Distortions in the outgoing nucleon waves are accounted for by performing a partial-wave expansion in a real mean-field potential. The antisymmetry condition for the A-body wavefunctions is shown to be naturally preserved. The model is used to calculate ($\gamma$,pn) and ($\gamma$,pp) cross sections off the target nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{12}$C for photon energies ranging from 50 MeV up to the $\bigtriangleup$(1232) isobar threshold. Effects due to the pionic currents and intermediate $\bigtriangleup$ creation are implemented. The impact of the distortions due to the interaction of the outgoing nucleon waves with the (A-2) core is examined. Hadronic form factors are introduced to regularize the $\pi$NN vertices and the sensitivity of the cross section to the pion cut-off mass is examined. The relative contribution of the ($\gamma$,pp) and the ($\gamma$,pn) channel to the total photoabsorption strength is discussed. Calculations have been performed for the $^{16}$O($\gamma$,pn) and the $^{16}$O($\gamma$,pp) reaction in the photon-energy range $E_{\gamma}$ = 60-300 MeV. Besides the contribution from the more common photoabsorption on the pionic degrees of freedom, we have investigated the influence of heavier meson exchange ($\rho, \sigma, \omega$) and intermediate $\Delta$ creation with $\pi$ and $\rho$ exchange. Whereas the $\pi$ meson is found to set the main trends, the $\rho$ meson is found not to be discardable in a theoretical description of the ($\gamma$,pn) reaction. The incorporation of an energy dependence and a decay width in the $\Delta$ propagator is observed to be essential in order to arrive at a more realistic description of ($\gamma$,NN) reactions at higher photon energies., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures in seperate postscript file, Submitted to Phys.
