Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics were prepared by both Hot-pressing (HP) and Spark-Plasma-Sintering (SPS) using cerium oxide as the sintering aid. The characterization of AlN raw powder denoted the presence of an amorphous layer that led to the formation of aluminum oxide. During the sintering process, CeO 2 introduced as a sintering aid was reduced into Ce 2 O 3 . The latter reacted with aluminum oxide to form a transient liquid phase that promotes sintering by both HP and SPS. A reactional path leading to the formation of secondary phases, such as CeAlO 3 and CeAl 11 O 18 , has been proposed according to the pseudo-binary Al 2 O 3 - Ce 2 O 3 . Ceramics obtained from HP and SPS are presented as similar, except for the secondary-phase distribution. The influences of secondary phase composition and distribution on electrical conductivity were evaluated by leakage current measurements. The mechanism of DC conduction and the global conductivity of ceramics were discussed according to the sintering process and the number of secondary phases.

Introduction: Co-stimulatory molecule cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) inhibits T-cell activation. Clinically, CTLA-4 has been targeted in opposite ways: its blockade enhances antitumor immunity in the field of oncology, whereas CTLA-4 agonists such as abatacept are used for the treatment of immuno-inflammatory diseases as rheumatoid arthritis (RA)., Observation: We herein report the case of a 69-year-old man with a history of severe RA successfully treated with abatacept, who showed unusually rapid progression of undifferentiated multi-metastatic carcinoma., Discussion: Although no significant increase in malignancy has been reported in abatacept-treated patients, several case reports have documented the possible association with the acceleration of the progression of malignancy. Background: The goal of this work was to assess the safety and efficacy of biologics (ie, tumor necrosis factor-α antagonists and tocilizumab) in patients with Takayasu arteritis., Methods and Results: This was a retrospective, multicenter study of the characteristics and outcomes of 49 patients with Takayasu arteritis (80% female; median age, 42 years [20-55 years] treated by tumor necrosis factor-α antagonists [80%] or tocilizumab [20%]) and fulfilling American College of Rheumatology or Ishikawa criteria. Factors associated with complete response were assessed. Eighty-eight percent of patients with Takayasu arteritis were inadequately controlled with or were intolerant to conventional immunosuppressive therapy (median number, 3 [1-5]). Overall response (ie, complete and partial) to biological-targeted treatments at 6 and 12 months was 75% and 83%, respectively. There were significantly lower C-reactive protein levels at the initiation of biological-targeted treatments (22 mg/L [10-46 mg/L] versus 58 mg/L [26-76 mg/L]; P=0.006) and a trend toward fewer immunosuppressants drugs used before biologics (P=0.054) in responders (ie, complete or partial responders) relative to nonresponders to biological-targeted treatments. C-reactive protein levels and daily prednisone dose significantly decreased after 12 months of biological-targeted treatments (30 versus 6 mg/L [P<0.05] and 15 versus 7.5 mg [P<0.05] at baseline and 12 months, respectively). The 3-year relapse-free survival was 90.9% (83.5%-99%) over the biological treatment period compared with 58.7% (43.3%-79.7%; P=0.0025) with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. No difference in efficacy was found between tumor necrosis factor-α antagonists and tocilizumab. After a median follow-up of 24 months (2-95 months), 21% of patients experienced adverse effects, with biological-targeted treatments discontinued in 6.6% of cases., Conclusion: This nationwide study shows a high efficacy of biological-targeted treatments in refractory patients with Takayasu arteritis with an acceptable safety profile., (© 2015 American Heart Association, Inc.)

Background: Transient elastography (TE) is widely used for non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in HIV-HCV co-infected patients. TE, however, cannot determine liver morphology. Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging is a novel procedure enabling assessment of liver fibrosis during a conventional ultrasonographic examination. This study evaluated the correlation between liver fibrosis measurements by TE and ARFI., Methods: Each of 46 HIV-HCV patients underwent both ARFI and TE within 6 months. Patients were evaluated by the "equivalent METAVIR" scoring system, using previously established cut-off values. Agreements between the ARFI and TE scores were estimated by Kappa coefficients, with Kappa values ≥0.40, ≥0.60, and ≥0.80 defined as moderate, good and very good agreement, respectively., Results: ARFI and TE yielded "Equivalent Metavir" fibrosis scores of F1 in 26 and 31 patients, respectively; F2 in nine and seven, respectively; F3 in three and two, respectively; and F4 in eight and six, respectively. The two methods showed very good agreement in predicting overall stages [Kappa = 0.82] and for F ≥3 [Kappa = 0.80] and moderate agreement in predicting significant fibrosis F ≥2 [Kappa = 0.50]. Morphologic ultrasound analysis concomitant to ARFI detected two hepatocarcinomas., Conclusions: ARFI showed promising results in the non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in HIV-HCV patients, with liver fibrosis staging similar to that of TE. Moreover, ARFI can assess morphology and fibrosis during the same session.

Introduction: The Becker's muscular dystrophy is a genetic myopathy due to mutations of the dystrophin gene, located in the Xp21 region, with a clinical expression usually occurring in young adults., Exegesis: We report an atypical case of late onset Becker's muscular dystrophy diagnosed at the age of 57. The patient suffered from mild skeletal muscle involvement revealed by the use of statins and fibrates, associated with severe dilating cardiomyopathy. The DNA analysis showed a deletion of the exons 11-13 in the Xp21 gene., Conclusion: The diagnostic of Becker's muscular dystrophy must be considered in all patients with persistently elevated CPK and/or primitive dilated cardiomyopathy, whatever the age of the patient.
