Abstract

IntroductionFunctional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can improve our understanding of neural processes subserving motor speech function. Yet its reproducibility remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of fMRI using a word repetition task across two time points.MethodsImaging data from 14 healthy controls were analysed using a multi-level general linear model.ResultsSignificant activation was observed during the task in the right hemispheric cerebellar lobules IV-V, right putamen, and bilateral sensorimotor cortices. Activation between timepoints was found to be moderately reproducible across time in the cerebellum but not in other brain regions.DiscussionPreliminary findings highlight the involvement of the cerebellum and connected cerebral regions during a motor speech task. More work is needed to determine the degree of reproducibility of speech fMRI before this could be used as a reliable marker of changes in brain activity.

Abstract

BackgroundDisability progression is a key milestone in the disease evolution of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Prediction models of the probability of disability progression have not yet reached the level of trust needed to be adopted in the clinic. A common benchmark to assess model development in multiple sclerosis is also currently lacking.MethodsData of adult PwMS with a follow-up of at least three years from 146 MS centers, spread over 40 countries and collected by the MSBase consortium was used. With basic inclusion criteria for quality requirements, it represents a total of 15, 240 PwMS. External validation was performed and repeated five times to assess the significance of the results. Transparent Reporting for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) guidelines were followed. Confirmed disability progression after two years was predicted, with a confirmation window of six months. Only routinely collected variables were used such as the expanded disability status scale, treatment, relapse information, and MS course. To learn the probability of disability progression, state-of-the-art machine learning models were investigated. The discrimination performance of the models is evaluated with the area under the receiver operator curve (ROC-AUC) and under the precision recall curve (AUC-PR), and their calibration via the Brier score and the expected calibration error. All our preprocessing and model code are available at https://gitlab.com/edebrouwer/ms_benchmark, making this task an ideal benchmark for predicting disability progression in MS.FindingsMachine learning models achieved a ROC-AUC of 0⋅71 ± 0⋅01, an AUC-PR of 0⋅26 ± 0⋅02, a Brier score of 0⋅1 ± 0⋅01 and an expected calibration error of 0⋅07 ± 0⋅04. The history of disability progression was identified as being more predictive for future disability progression than the treatment or relapses history.ConclusionsGood discrimination and calibration performance on an external validation set is achieved, using only routinely collected variables. This suggests machine-learning models can reliably inform clinicians about the future occurrence of progression and are mature for a clinical impact study.

Abstract

Purpose: Low-dose total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT) is a proven treatment for managing cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) and Sezary syndrome with skin burden. We performed a retrospective comparison of response rates and time to progression for patients receiving low-dose TSEBT based on dose per fractionation, total dose, and stage. Methods and Materials: One hundred and ten patients with CTCL and Sezary syndrome were treated with 135 courses of low-dose (400-1500 cGy) TSEBT or subtotal skin electron therapy at multiple centers of a single institution between August 2003 and June 2023. Patients were stratified according to total dose, dose per fraction, and stage. Results: The median follow-up was 301 days (IQR, 141, 767). The median age at treatment was 69.9 years (range, 29.7-96.5). T-stage distribution was as follows: 3 (2.7%) T1, 74 (67.3%) T2, 16 (14.5%) T3, and 17 (15.5%) T4. American Joint Committee on Cancer eighth edition stage distribution was as follows: 3 (2.7%) IA, 53 (48.2%) IB, 3 (2.7%) IIA, 16 (14.5%) IIB, 8 (7.3%) IIIA, 19 (17.3%) IVA, and 8 (7.3%) IVB. There was no significant difference in disease distribution between patients treated with different fractionation schemes. The overall response rate was 89.6%. Forty-four courses (32.6%), 34 courses (25.2%), and 43 (31.9%) resulted in a complete, near-complete, and partial response, respectively. Fourteen courses (10.4%) resulted in no clinical response. For all patients, the median time to response was 43.0 days (IQR, 23.0-70). The median time to skin progression for all patients was 107.5 days (IQR, 67.8-233.5). Conclusions: This analysis demonstrated that CTCL patients treated with low-dose radiation therapy delivered over various fractionation schemes had similar overall response rates and median time to progression.

69. The Role of the School in Inculcating Citizenship Values in South Africa: Theoretical and International Comparative Perspectives

Abstract

In view of the serious moral decay in South African society, this article reports on our research regarding the role of the school in the inculcation of citizenship values (as part of the brief of South African education). We regard a set of citizenship values consonant with a democratic dispensation to be a core component of a moral order essential for South Africa. Using a combination of interpretive-constructivist and comparative approaches, we examine and evaluate the experiences of other post-conflict societies in using education to inculcate citizenship values. We conclude that schools can be successful with respect to the inculcation of citizenship values, provided that the curriculum itself does not discriminate against any group or category of people. Desegregation can only be beneficial in the absence of negative depiction (including criminalisation) or the unequal treatment of any particular societal grouping. Our research suggests that active citizenship education is needed in schools. For this reason, we contend that teacher education has to form an integral part of a moral revival project. Lastly, we highlight the importance of finding democratically agreed-upon ways to continually engage with parents, legal caregivers and other stakeholders and role-players before and during the execution of any such project.

Abstract Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for developing multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the immune effects of vitamin D in people with MS are not well understood. We analyzed transcriptomic datasets generated by RNA sequencing of immune cell subsets (CD4+, CD8+ T cells, B cells, monocytes) from 33 healthy controls and 33 untreated MS cases. We utilized a traditional bioinformatic pipeline and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to determine genes and pathways correlated with endogenous vitamin D. Abstract

Apartheid’s impact on South Africa’s urban spatial patterns persists, resulting in spatial fragmentation and inequality. Unsustainable urban sprawl exacerbates challenges related to economic access. To address said challenges, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) implemented the Corridors of Freedom (CoF) initiative, emphasising economic inclusion. Amid substantial public sector investment, the initiative prioritised the Louis Botha Development Corridor (LBDC) to create a dense, mixed-use, walkable urban environment. However, limited research investigated the LBDC’s impact from an economic access perspective. This study investigates how the LBDC has improved economic access and provides policy insights for urban areas in South Africa, within the conceptual framework of transit-oriented development (TOD) and development corridors. A quantitative research approach using Network Analyst reveals that the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system increased economic access by 16% compared to other LBDC transport services. This study demonstrates the potential of the dual implementation of TOD and development corridors to foster economic access in the study area and concludes with policy recommendations centred on cross-departmental collaboration, feasibility studies and risk allocation, location-based criteria and transit accessibility targets, transit-oriented design guidelines, and integrated transport systems.

Abstract

This paper introduces a hybrid analytical framework to comprehensively assess luxury game lodges within protected areas such as Coupled Human and Natural Systems (CHANS). The framework, developed through a synthesis of diverse Social-Ecological Systems (SES) models and tools, encompasses eight key steps, from sustainability context assessment to creating a tailored managerial-ecology model. Abstract

The rapid growth of cities, owing to rural-urban migration and high birth rate has resulted in encroachment of the land use and land cover (LULC) in the Cape Flats, situated north of Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. PlanetScope imagery and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) classifier are used to map and monitor the following LULC classes within the Cape Flats; waterbodies, trees, built-up, and vegetation, we further do a time series map between 2016 and 2021.The results showed that LULC changes between 2016 to 2021 are as follows: a decrease of 2.1% in vegetation, 0.4% in water bodies, and 11% in trees. Built-up areas, on the other hand, showed a significant increase of 13.6% over five years. The LULC changes in the Cape Flats were mainly triggered by an increase in built-up areas due to household construction to accommodate the increased population resulting from rural-to-urban migration and high birth rate. Classification accuracy from 2016 and 2021 was as follows; overall accuracy of 98.31% and 0.97 kappa coefficient in 2016, while overall accuracy 96.54% and kappa coefficient 0.95 in 2021. A combination of machine learning and high-resolution imagery showcased that high classification results can be achieved in monitoring subtle LULC changes. We recommended that all relevant stakeholders, including government officials and municipalities, formulate and adopt policies to protect against LULC degradation.

76. Revisiting the formaldehyde masers

Abstract

The 4.8 GHz formaldehyde masers are one of a number of rare types of molecular masers in the Galaxy. The aim of the present calculations is to explore a larger region of parameter space to improve on our previous calculations, thereby to better understand the range of physical conditions under which an inversion of the 4.8 GHz transition occurs. We solve the rate equations of the first 40 rotational levels of o-formaldehyde using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. We consider gas kinetic temperatures between 10 K and 300 K, H_2 densities between 10^4 and 10^6 per cc, and a number of different dust temperatures and grey-body spectral energy density distributions. Using a grey-body dust radiation field appropriate for Arp 220 we find that none of 4.8 GHz, 14 GHz, and 28 GHz transitions are inverted for kinetic temperatures less than 100 K. Our calculations also show that in theory the 4.8 GHz transition can be inverted over a large region of explored parameter space in the presence of an external far-infrared radiation field. Limiting the abundance of o-formaldehyde to less than 10^{-5}, however, reduces the region where an inversion occurs to H_2 densities > 10^5 per cc and kinetic temperatures >100 K. We propose a pumping scheme for the formaldehyde masers which can explain why collisions play a central role in inverting the 4.8 GHz transition, and therefore why an external radiation field alone does not lead to an inversion. Collisions are an essential mechanism for the inversion of the 4.8 GHz transition. Abstract

Efficient searches for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave, high-energy neutrino, and gamma-ray burst events demand rapid processing of image arithmetic and geometry set operations in a database to cross-match galaxy catalogs, observation footprints, and all-sky images. Here we introduce HEALPix Alchemy, an open-source, pure Python implementation of a set of methods that enables rapid all-sky geometry calculations. HEALPix Alchemy is built upon HEALPix, a spatial indexing strategy that is widely used in astronomical databases as well as the native format of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA gravitational-wave sky localization maps. Our approach leverages new multirange types built into the PostgreSQL 14 database engine. This enables fast all-sky queries against probabilistic multimessenger event localizations and telescope survey footprints. Questions such as "What are the galaxies contained within the 90% credible region of an event?" and "What is the rank-ordered list of the fields within an observing footprint with the highest probability of containing the event?" can be performed in less than a few seconds on commodity hardware using off-the-shelf cloud-managed database implementations without server-side database extensions. Common queries scale roughly linearly with the number of telescope pointings. As the number of fields grows into the hundreds or thousands, HEALPix Alchemy is orders of magnitude faster than other implementations. Abstract

Maize is a staple crop important for food security that millions globally depend upon as an energy source, primarily due to its high starch and fat content. For growth and disease resistance, maize production requires a balanced intake of essential nutrients, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). This study investigated the relationship between soil nutrient levels and maize disease occurrences in the Mopani District Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Soil and maize leaves were collected using a systematic sampling approach. Grids of 10 × 10 m were created, covering a maize field. Forty soil samples were collected a day before the planting date and sent to the laboratory for analysis of N, P and K. During the tasseling stage of the maize plant, 40 maize leaf samples were collected and sent to the laboratory for disease identification. Maize leaves were classified as healthy, southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis), northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum), maize streak disease (Maize streak virus), nitrogen-deficient or phosphorus-deficient. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) with a corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) showed a significant relationship between low soil nutrient levels of N, P and K and maize disease occurrence (p < 0.0001). The interaction of the N*P*K model had the lowest AIC value (AICc = 28.53), indicating the necessity of considering synergistic effects in maize disease management. All the model performances had a delta AICc = 0. These findings highlight the significance of comprehensive soil management strategies in enhancing the disease resistance, well-being and yields of maize crops.

81. Overcoming 'Colonization of the Mind' through Citizenship Education: A Four-Dimensional Perspective

Abstract

This article is based on research into the phenomenon referred to as the "colonization of the mind." It commences with a discussion of four different backgrounds and concomitant experiences regarding this persistent form of colonization: two with reference to the authors of this article, and two with reference to distinguishable categories of Indigenous people who still feel the enduring effects of the colonization of the mind. After theorizing about the "living in two worlds" that seems to be typical of the colonization of the mind, the authors propose a number of biblically justifiable measures that can be implemented by those still feeling themselves suffering from this lingering form of colonization. These measures include the adoption of a reformed ontology, anthropology, ethics, and education. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of an adapted Citizenship Education school program that may contribute to the eradication of the colonization of the mind issue.

82. Discipline in the Parental Home and at School: Instead of the 'Blame Game', a Caring Community

Abstract

This is an educational-philosophical, more particularly, a societal-theoretical reflection on the "blame game" that is occasionally played between the parental home and the school with respect to the behaviour displayed by children in these societal relationships. After consulting the literature regarding this issue, and the findings of recent empirical studies in South Africa for purposes of describing the "blame game", the interpretivist-constructivist method was employed for exploring an alternative approach to the discipline problem in homes and schools, namely the creation of a social compact, and of a caring school community based thereon. The discipline practised in the parental home differs from that at school because home and school are essentially different societal relationships, each with unique foundation and destination functions; hence with respective sphere sovereignty. Their interests and activities are, at the same time, also interlaced in that they share the same child as a member. It is due to this interlacement (enkapsis) that unacceptable behaviour at home might impact detrimentally on discipline in the school, and vice versa. To counteract this reciprocal display of unruly behaviour, it is suggested that the parents and the school attended by their children could consider entering into a social compact or covenant so that they are as one in guiding the young people towards disciplined behaviour, that is, socially acceptable behaviour. The actions of such a new community should be guided by several moral codes, the most important of which are the ethic of community, and of loving, caring and compassion.

83. Prevalence of Motor Skill Impairment among Grade R Learners in the West Coast District of South Africa

Abstract

A high prevalence of medical conditions affects the typical motor development of learners in the West Coast District of South Africa. Given the strong correlation between motor skill performance and academic achievement, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of motor skill impairment among Grade R learners (5-7-year olds) enrolled in public schools in the area. Multistage cluster sampling was used to identify 6 schools from which all Grade R learners were invited to participate. Following ethical approval, 138 learners' gross and fine motor skills were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2nd edition (M-ABC2). Results indicate that the prevalence of significant motor skill impairment in this region was high at 14.5%, and that the prevalence of children with manual dexterity difficulties was very high, at 24.6% (i.e. scores below the 15th percentile of the M-ABC2) when compared to global statistics, yet comparable to countries with a similar socio-economic structure. The prevalence of children with balance difficulties was 18.1%, while the prevalence of children with difficulties in aiming and catching was low at 4.3%. Pearson's correlation indicates that gender (male), a lack of playground equipment and low weight/height are factors associated with learners' poor manual dexterity, while poor manual dexterity and balance skills were associated with learners attending no-fee schools. The study confirms that motor skill difficulties are a significant problem in this region and calls for further research to address the problem.

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a state-of-the-art optical robotic sky survey, registers on the order of a million transient events - such as supernova explosions, changes in brightness of variable sources, or moving object detections - every clear night, and generates associated real-time alerts. We present Alert-Classifying Artificial Intelligence (ACAI), an open-source deep-learning framework for the phenomenological classification of ZTF alerts. ACAI uses a set of five binary classifiers to characterize objects which, in combination with the auxiliary/contextual event information available from alert brokers, provides a powerful tool for alert stream filtering tailored to different science cases, including early identification of supernova-like and anomalous transient events. Astronomers have yet to establish whether high-mass protostars form from high-mass prestellar cores, similar to their lower-mass counterparts, or from lower-mass fragments at the heart of a pre-protostellar cluster undergoing large-scale collapse. Part of the uncertainty is due to a shortage of envelope structure data on protostars of a few tens of solar masses, where we expect to see a transition from intermediate-mass star formation to the high-mass process. We sought to derive the masses, luminosities, and envelope density profiles for eight sources in Cygnus-X, whose mass estimates in the literature placed them in the sampling gap. Combining these sources with similarly evolved sources in the literature enabled us to perform a meta-analysis of protostellar envelope parameters over six decades in source luminosity. We performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting on archival broadband photometric continuum data from 1.2 to 850 $\mu$m, to derive bolometric luminosities for our eight sources plus initial mass and radius estimates for modelling density and temperature profiles with the radiative transfer package Transphere. The envelope masses, densities at 1000 AU, outer envelope radii, and density power law indices as functions of bolometric luminosity all follow established trends in the literature spanning six decades in luminosity. Most of our sources occupy an intermediate to moderately high range of masses and luminosities, which helps to more firmly establish the continuity between low- and high-mass star formation mechanisms. Our density power law indices are consistent with observed values in literature, which show no discernible trends with luminosity. Abstract

Magnetar hyperflares are the most plausible explanation for fast radio bursts (FRB) -- enigmatic powerful radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures. The first observational evidence for this scenario was obtained in 2020 April when a FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma-ray repeater SGR\,1935+2154. The FRB was preceded by two gamma-ray outburst alerts by the BAT instrument aboard the Swift satellite, which triggered follow-up observations by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR\,1935+2154 for 2 hr on 2020 April 28. The observations are coincident with X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Fermi-GBM, thus providing the first very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of a magnetar in a flaring state. High-quality data acquired during these follow-up observations allow us to perform a search for short-time transients. No significant signal at energies $E>0.6$~TeV is found and upper limits on the persistent and transient emission are derived. Abstract

(Abridged) Complex organic molecules (COMs) are commonly detected in and near star-forming regions. However, the dominant process in the release of these COMs from the icy grains - where they predominately form - to the gas phase is still an open question. We investigate the origin of COM emission in a protostellar source, CygX-N30, through high-angular-resolution interferometric observations over a continuous broad frequency range. We used 32 GHz Submillimeter Array observations with continuous frequency coverage from 329 to 361 GHz at an angular resolution of ~1" to do a line survey and obtain a chemical inventory of the source. The line emission was used to determine column densities and excitation temperatures for the COMs. We mapped out the intensity distribution of the different species and identified approximately 400 lines that can be attributed to 29 different molecular species and their isotopologues. We find that the molecular peak emission is along a linear gradient, coinciding with the axis of red- and blueshifted H2CO and CS emission. Chemical differentiation is detected along this gradient, with the O-bearing molecular species peaking towards one component of the system and the N- and S-bearing species peaking towards the other. The inferred column densities and excitation temperatures are compared to other sources where COMs are abundant. The origin of the observed COM emission is probably a combination of the young stellar sources along with accretion of infalling material onto a disc-like structure surrounding a young protostar. The low D/H ratio observed (<0.1%) likely reflects a pre-stellar phase where COMs formed on the ices at warm temperatures (~ 30 K), with inefficient deuterium fractionation. The observations and results presented here demonstrate the importance of good frequency coverage and high angular resolution when disentangling the origin of COM emission., Comment: 61 pages, 60 figures. Abstract

Orientation: The turbulent external environment has caused employees to resign at an alarming rate. Employers are also struggling with issues such as low productivity and low work engagement. In response to these challenges, it is necessary to consider what motivates employees to work hard consistently without giving up when faced with adversity and setbacks. Research purpose: The purpose of the study was to establish whether workplace spirituality at an individual, work unit and organisational level enhances perseverance. Motivation for the study: Contemporary employees are challenged personally and in the work context. Remaining motivated and invested in their work despite these challenges requires a higher form of inspiration, which suggests the importance of workplace spirituality. Research approach/design and method: The research adopted both a deductive and an inductive research approach, and a descriptive cross-sectional research design was used. Data were collected utilising a survey strategy, and the final sample consisted of 385 respondents. Main findings: The study’s findings show that individual spirituality influences perseverance. Individual spirituality fully mediates the influence of organisational spirituality and work unit spirituality on perseverance. Practical/managerial implications: To ensure that employees work hard consistently despite challenges and hardships, workplace spirituality should be considered at the individual, work unit and organisational levels. Emphasis also needs to be placed on supporting the spiritual development and growth of spiritual employees, as individual spirituality seems to promote perseverance. Contribution/value-add: The study contributes to theory development and knowledge creation of workplace spirituality and perseverance constructs.

Abstract

Abstract Reproduction, although absolutely essential to a species’ persistence, is in itself challenging. As anthropogenic change increasingly affects every landscape on Earth, it is critical to understand how specific pressures impact the reproductive efforts of individuals, which directly contribute to the success or failure of populations. However, organisms rarely encounter a single burden at a time, and the interactions of environmental challenges can have compounding effects. Understanding environmental and physiological pressures is difficult because they are often context‐dependent and not generalizable, but long‐term monitoring across variable landscapes and weather patterns can improve our understanding of these complex interactions. We tested the effects of urbanization, climate, and individual condition on the reproductive investment of wild side‐blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) by measuring physiological/reproductive metrics from six populations in urban and rural areas over six consecutive years of variable precipitation. We observed that reproductive stage affected body condition, corticosterone concentration, and oxidative stress. We also observed that reproductive patterns differed between urban and rural populations depending on rainfall, with rural animals increasing reproductive investment during rainier years compared to urban conspecifics, and that reproductive decisions appeared to occur early in the reproductive process. These results demonstrate the plastic nature of a generalist species optimizing lifetime fitness under varying conditions.

Abstract

The research reported in this article was centred on three research questions about the issue of ensuring that, in education and schooling, the principle of the best interests of the child is respected. The inauspicious treatment of children through the ages led the international community in the form of the United Nations to adopt its Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989. The series of developments culminating in the adoption of the CRC led to the formulation of the following three research questions: (1) What motivated the United Nations to adopt its CRC, in particular its formulation of the notion of ‘the best interests of the child’? (2) How did the notion of ‘the best interests of the child’ subsequently find expression in the 1996 Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the South African jurisprudence following thereafter? (3) What perspectives does the Bible, as the Word of God, provide on the notion of ‘the best interests of the child’? Interpretivism-constructivism was used in putting together the thesis developed in this article. Interpretivism was applied to the results of an initial literature study on the status of the child, followed by constructivism in construing the line of argumentation that follows. The second part of the article emerged after a critical analysis of the post-1994 legislation and jurisprudence in South Africa. The norm set by the CRC has been respected since the advent of the new political dispensation in South African legislation and subsequent jurisprudence. The Bible, as the Word of God, also provides perspectives regarding the notion of ‘the best interests of the child’, although it does not employ this phrase as such. It teaches that since children are human beings and created in the image of God, and also because they are vulnerable, they have to be treated with loving care, respect, sympathy, and empathy. Contribution: The article sheds light on the way the concept ‘best interests of the child’ attained international acceptance and subsequently obtained application in the South African constitutional arena since 1994. It also creates a link between legal stipulations and biblical perspectives regarding the notion of ‘the best interests of the child’.

Background In Australia, tixagevimab/cilgavimab 150 mg/150 mg was a government-funded pre-exposure prophylaxis for COVID-19 people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and other neuroimmunological conditions (pwNIc) treated with anti-CD20 antibodies or sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulators were eligible.Objective To analyse the roll-out, uptake and real-world efficacy of tixagevimab/cilgavimab in the prevention and severity of COVID-19. To assess compliance with uptake depending on the location of delivery.Methods We undertook a single-centre study. 440 pwMS and pwNIc were eligible. Logistic regression was used to assess predictors of COVID-19 during follow-up and to assess predictors of uptake among those who consented.Results Of the eligible pwMS and pwNIc in our service, 52.7% (233/440) requested a consultation and were included in this study. Consultation resulted in 71.7% of people (167/233) receiving the treatment. Of these, 94.0% (157/167) had received three or more COVID-19 vaccines. Among those who received a single dose of tixagevimab/cilgavimab, 19.16% (32/167) tested positive for COVID-19 during the observational window. The majority of these were on ocrelizumab (68.8% (22/32)). None of those with COVID-19 required hospitalisation or supplemental oxygen. There was no difference in odds of COVID-19 during the observation period between those who received and did not receive tixagevimab/cilgavimab (adjusted OR, aOR 2.16 (95% CI 0.82 to 6.85), p=0.43). Uptake of tixagevimab/cilgavimab was highest when offered at the hospital infusion centre (aOR 3.09 (95% CI 1.08 to 9.94) relative to referral to the local pharmacy, p=0.04).Conclusion Tixagevimab/cilgavimab administration did not protect against subsequent COVID-19 in our cohort. Compliance with uptake was influenced by administration location.

Abstract

In the resource-constrained South African education sector, infrastructure considered temporary or a backup in other countries is used as permanent classrooms, primarily but not exclusively in lower-income areas. Children's cognitive performance and comfort are directly impacted by indoor air quality. Temperature, relative humidity, particulate matter and CO2 levels, substantial determinants of air quality and thermal comfort, have not been investigated across different classroom building and infrastructure types. We measure these parameters with 11-min intervals in 24 classrooms at schools in Stellenbosch, South Africa. These classrooms consist of a range of different infrastructure types. Container classrooms with and without insulation, mobile (prefabricated) classrooms, and brick classrooms of different configurations are included. Measurements are concurrently sampled over ten months (249 days, still ongoing) across multiple seasons with relevant metadata, including ambient weather conditions, school days and times, and electricity availability in the (South) African context, which impacts air conditioning usage. This dataset provides valuable insights into true learning conditions in South African classrooms.

100. AgERA5 representation of seasonal mean and extreme temperatures in the Northern Cape, South Africa

Abstract

Over regions with sparse observation networks, including South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, gridded data sets represent valuable supplementary data sources enabling spatially detailed climate investigations. Their performance is, however, influenced by regional characteristics, thus a performance assessment should be a prerequisite for any regional application. Through a pairwise comparison with eight point-based temperature records, we evaluated the AgERA5 data sets representation of mean summer (November–March; Tms) and winter (May–September; Tmw) temperatures and respective seasonal heatwave and coldwave characteristics across the Northern Cape for 1980–2020. Correlations ranging from 0.48 to 0.92 for Tms and from 0.38 to 0.94 for Tmw reflect relatively strong, but varying, temporal correspondence between the AgERA5 data and stations. Low biases, averaging −0.08 (0.17) °C and ranging from -0.79 to 2.10 (-0.40 to 1.47) °C for Tms (Tmw) were evident. Biases for the heatwave (coldwave) magnitudes were low, averaging -0.38 (0.19) °C2, and ranging from -1.55 to 1.47 (-2.05 to 2.91) °C2. Biases for the heatwave (coldwave) frequency were also low, but typically overestimated, averaging 1.19 (0.73) days, and ranging from -1.33 to 5.60 (-1.61 to 3.39) days. Biases for the heatwave (coldwave) number were low and typically overestimated, averaging 0.27 (0.08) events, and ranging from -0.28 to 1.40 (-0.39 to 0.39) events. Despite some stations depicting consistently poor performance, the study results support further application of the AgERA5 product for spatiotemporal analyses of mean and extreme temperatures across the Northern Cape, provided limitations are adequately acknowledged. Further application of the fine-resolution AgERA5 product will greatly inform impact-based studies exploring mean and extreme temperature influences over the Northern Cape Province. Significance: • The AgERA5 product was assessed on its performance in representing average and extreme temperature characteristics over South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. • Good comparability between the AgERA5 product and point-based observations supports further application of the AgERA5 across the Northern Cape. • The AgERA5 product offers a spatially detailed picture of mean and extreme temperatures across the Northern Cape, which is valuable for regions where weather stations are not available. • The AgERA5 product is thus important for impact-based studies assessing, for instance, the impact of extreme temperatures on livestock and human health.
