Pseudospark switches are fast-closing low-pressure gas discharge switches with a hollow-cathode geometry. They can be triggered optically or by electron injection, where electrons emitted from a cold cathode emitter are accelerated in the electric field and initiate breakdown. The efficiency of charge carrier accumulation in the hollow-cathode structure determines the performance of the switch operation. The advantages of such switches include high hold-off voltage, high conduction current, fast current rise time, low delay and jitter time, and long lifetime. In this paper, the operating characteristics of a pseudospark switch, triggered by a carbon-nanotube (CNT)-coated electron emitter, are presented. The electron emitter is fabricated by coating randomly oriented CNTs on silicon substrate using chemical vapor deposition method. Field emission characteristics of CNTs are determined and then used as part of the trigger electrode which is integrated into an in-house constructed pseudospark switch. The operating characteristics of the switch are tested under different background pressures and different trigger voltages. Delay and jitter time under different working conditions are analyzed. The modeling and demonstration of large stroke, high energy density and high power density torsional springs based on carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns is reported, as well as their application as energy-storing actuators for regenerative braking systems. An originally untwisted CNT yarn is cyclically loaded and unloaded in torsion, with the maximum rotation angle increasing incrementally until failure. The measured average extractable energy density values are 2.9 kJ kg−1  ±  1.2 kJ kg−1 and 3.4 kJ kg−1  ±  0.4 kJ kg−1 for 1-ply CNT yarns and 2-ply CNT yarns, respectively. Additionally, a regenerative braking system is demonstrated to capture the kinetic energy of a wheel and store it as elastic energy in twisted CNT yarns. When the yarn’s twist is released, the stored energy reaccelerates the wheel. The measured energy and mean power densities of the CNT yarns in the simple regenerative braking setup are on average 3.3 kJ kg−1 and 0.67 kW kg−1, respectively, with maximum measured values of up to 4.7 kJ kg−1 and 1.2 kW kg−1, respectively. A slightly lower energy density of up to 1.2 kJ kg−1 and a 0.29 kW kg−1 mean power density are measured for CNT yarns in a more complex setup that mimics a unidirectional rotating regenerative braking mechanism. The enzyme immobilization has been adopted to enhance the activity and stability of enzymes in non-aqueous enzymatic catalysis. However, the activation and stabilization mechanism has been poorly understood on experiments. Thus, we used molecular dynamics simulation to study the adsorption of α-chymotrypsin (α-ChT) on carbon nanotube (CNT) in aqueous solution and heptane media. The results indicate that α-ChT has stronger affinity with CNT in aqueous solution than in heptane media, as confirmed by more adsorption atoms, larger contact area and higher binding free energies. Although the immobilization causes significant structure deviations from the crystal one, no significant changes in secondary structure of the enzyme upon adsorption are observed in the two media. Different from aqueous solution, the stabilization effects on some local regions far from the surface of CNT were observed in heptane media, in particular for S1 pocket, which should contribute to the preservation of specificity reported by experiments. Also, CNT displays to some extent stabilization role in retaining the catalytic H-bond network of the active site in heptane media, which should be associated with the enhanced activity of enzymes.
