Excited states in 52Fe have been determined up to spin 10\hbar in the reaction 28Si + 28Si at 115 MeV by using \gamma-ray spectroscopy methods at the GASP array. The excitation energy of the yrast 10+ state has been determined to be 7.381 MeV, almost 0.5 MeV above the well known \beta+-decaying yrast 12+ state, definitely confirming the nature of its isomeric character. The mean lifetimes of the states have been measured by using the Doppler Shift Attenuation method. The experimental data are compared with spherical shell model calculations in the full pf-shell., Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 7 figures included

- Abstract
High-power PW laser systems (HPLS) provide intense beams of accelerated reaction-driving protons simultaneously with spatially localized keV-plasmas. We herein depict our groundwork and strategy to use these unique features of the HPLS at the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI-NP) by exposing the long-lived nuclear isomer 93 m Mo at 2.425 MeV ( t 1 / 2 = 6.85 h) to plasma facilitating the local petawatt beamlines. An intermediate short-lived ( t 1 / 2 = 3.52 ns) state situated only 4.85 keV above 93 m Mo constitutes a gateway to allow for its prompt release. The controllable release of the nuclear isomer energy will henceforth enable harvesting energy densities in the nuclear regime of GJkg - 1 (‘Nuclear Battery’). The campaign was inspired by the observation of the triggered release of 93 m Mo via the intermediate state by Chiara et al. [1] published in Nature. They assigned the hitherto elusive Nuclear Excitation by Electron Capture (NEEC) as the driving process and claimed a very high probability of P NEEC exp = 0.010 (3) . However, these claims are challenged by experimentalists [2-3] and theory [4]. We herein outline our strategy following bespoke theoretical guidance in the quest to unambiguously and independently demonstrate the onset of NEEC in 93 m Mo . With the yield estimations derived for our forthcoming HPLS experiment at ELI-NP, we draw optimism to resolve the current conundrum between the conflicting experimental observations and theoretical interpretations as discussed in world-leading journals and to pave the way for the future utilization of isomer depopulation in applied physics. - Abstract
A workshop on The Next Generation Gamma-Ray Sources, sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy, was held November 17–19, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. The goals of the workshop were to identify basic and applied research opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear physics that would be made possible by the beam capabilities of an advanced laser Compton beam facility. To anchor the scientific vision to realistically achievable beam specifications using proven technologies, the workshop brought together experts in the fields of electron accelerators, lasers, and optics to examine the technical options for achieving the beam specifications required by the most compelling parts of the proposed research programs. An international assembly of participants included current and prospective gamma-ray beam users, accelerator and light-source physicists, and federal agency program managers. Sessions were organized to foster interactions between the beam users and facility developers, allowing for information sharing and mutual feedback between the two groups. The workshop findings and recommendations are summarized.

- Abstract
The nucleus Po-212 has been produced through the fragmentation of a U-238 primary beam at 1GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer gamma-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown gamma rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21(-) isomeric state feeding the alpha-emitting 45-s (18(+)) high-spin isomer. The other gamma-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23(+) metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the Po-212 (18(+)) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of U-238 fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high- jproton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z similar to 100 is sensitive. We present recent results on the structure of the one-valence-particle $^{41}$Ca and $^{49}$Ca, and one-valence-hole $^{47}$Ca, nuclei. The isotopes of interest were populated via the cold-neutron capture reactions $^{40}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma$) and $^{46}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), respectively. The experiments were performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, within the EXILL campaign, which employed a large array of HPGe detectors. The $\gamma$ decay and level schemes of these nuclei were investigated by $\gamma$-ray coincidence relationships, leading to the identification of 41, 10, and 6 new transitions in $^{41}$Ca, $^{47}$Ca, and $^{49}$Ca, respectively. Branching ratios and intensities were extracted for the $\gamma$ decay from each state, and $\gamma$-ray angular correlations were performed to establish a number of transition multipolarities and mixing ratios, thus helping in the spin assignment of the states. The experimental findings are discussed along with microscopic, self-consistent beyond-mean-field calculations performed with the Hybrid Configuration Mixing model, based on a Skyrme SkX Hamiltonian. The latter suggests that a fraction of the low-spin states of the $^{41}$Ca, $^{49}$Ca, and $^{47}$Ca nuclei is characterized by the coexistence of either 2p-1h and 1p-2h excitations, or couplings between single-particle/hole degrees of freedom and collective vibrations (phonons) of the doubly-magic "core".

- Abstract
The neutron-rich Pb-213 isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV A U-238 beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay gamma-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newly observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in Pb-213 are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum J = 0. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of a geometric phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The gamma-ray spectroscopic observables in Pb-213 are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through a Berry phase. - Abstract
The transitional nuclei Ba134 and Ba133 are investigated after multinucleon transfer employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and after fusion-evaporation reaction at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. The Jπ=19/2+ state at 1942 keV in Ba133 is identified as an isomer with a half-life of 66.6(20)ns corresponding to a B(E1) value of 7.7(4)×10-6e2fm2 for the Jπ=19/2+ to Jπ=19/2- transition. The level scheme of Ba134 above the Jπ=10+ isomer is extended to approximately 6 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ω=0.38 MeV along the positive-parity yrast band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=56 isotopes. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, SN100PN, SNV, PQM130, Realistic SM, and EPQQM interactions reproduce the experimental findings and elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. The shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82 and PQM130 interactions reproduce alignment properties and provide detailed insight into the microscopic origin of this phenomenon in transitional Ba134.

Nuclear and High Energy Physics - Abstract
The high-spin structures of Ba136 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Ba136 is populated in a Xe136+U238 MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS γ-ray array. The level scheme above the Jπ=10+ isomer in Ba136 is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approximately 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex=3707- and Ex=4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both Te132 and Xe134 are characterized by high-energy 12+→10+ transitions, the Ba136E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negative-parity states only a few hundred keV above the Jπ=10+ isomer. Furthermore, spins are established for several hitherto unassigned high-spin states in Ba137. The new results close a gap along the high-spin structure of N

- Abstract
Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 148Ce have been populated by neutron-induced fission of 235U and 241Pu samples. Their electromagnetic decays were studied by means of γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states of 148Ce were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B4=2 = B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1)=B(E2; 2+1 → 0+1) ratio indicates that 148Ce is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z < 60.

The Li7(γ,t)He4 ground state cross section was measured for the first time using monoenergetic γ rays with energies between 4.4 and 10 MeV at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source. The reaction is important for the primordial Li problem and for testing our understanding of the mirror α-capture reactions H3(α,γ)Li7 and He3(α,γ)Be7. Although over the last 30 years most measurements of the H3(α,γ)Li7 reaction have concentrated in an energy range below Eγ=3.65 MeV, measurements at higher energies could potentially restrict the extrapolation to astrophysically important energies. The experimental arrangement for measuring the Li7(γ,t)He4 reaction included a large-area silicon detector array and several beam characterization instruments. The experimental astrophysical S factor of H3(α,γ) calculated from the present data was fitted using the R-matrix formalism. The results are in disagreement with previous experimental measurements in the same energy range but the extrapolated S factor agrees with the potential model calculation and lower energy experimental data.

International audience; Lifetimes of low- and high-spin states in the odd-A nucleus 177Hf were measured during the EXILL&FATIMA campaign using a spectrometer equipped with eight HPGe-Clover detectors and 16 fast-timing LaBr3(Ce) detectors. For the determination of lifetimes in the pico- to nanosecond regime, the well-established generalized centroid difference method was used. Lifetimes of the 9/2−, 9/2+, 11/2−, 11/2+ states were remeasured, the lifetimes of the 13/2−, 17/2−, 13/2+, 15/2+, and 17/2+ states were determined for the first time and an upper limit for the 19/2+ state has been established. From these lifetimes absolute reduced transition probabilities were extracted and compared to particle-rotor-model calculations and quasiparticle-phonon-model calculations showing the importance of including multipole-multipole interactions in the description of odd-A nuclei in the rare earth region.

- Abstract
Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus Ce-148 have been populated by neutron-induced fission of a U-235 target. Its electromagnetic decays were studied by means of gamma-ray coincidence spectroscopy with fast-timing capabilities. Lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) and 4(1)(+) states of Ce-148 were obtained and their E2 decay rates deduced. The B-4/2 = B(E2; 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+))/B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) ratio indicates that Ce-148 is a transitional nucleus while the N = 88/90 shape phase transition evolves into a gradual change of nuclear deformation for proton numbers Z < 60.
