Rotaviruses (RVs) are significant enteric pathogens of humans and animals. In March 2021, the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) received a fecal sample from a 1-week-old goat kid with diarrhea from a farm with 5 additional diarrheic kids. The fecal sample was tested negative for Bovine coronavirus, Bovine rotavirus Group A, E. coli K99+, Cryptosporidium parvum and Salmonella spp by multiplex real-time PCR assays. Interestingly, a novel Equine Rotavirus B (ERVB) in Kentucky was identified from neonatal foals also with watery diarrhea in the Spring of 2021. Once the ERVB-specific real-time PCR assay became available, the fecal sample from the goat kid was tested and found positive for RVB. Genome sequence of the caprine RVB from fecal sample was obtained using shotgun metagenomic sequencing by Illumina MiSeq. All of the eleven viral segments of caprine RVB were sequenced either completely or partially. Genetic and phylogenetic analysis of VP7, VP4, VP6, VP1–VP3, and NSP1- NSP5 genes indicated the caprine RVB strain had the genotype constellation of G3-P[3]-I3- R3-C3-M3-A4-N3-T3-E3-H3. In addition, the caprine RVB sequence showed the highest nucleotide identity and evolutionary relationship to the ERVB and previously sequenced caprine RVB strains. Given the similar geographical location of the equine and caprine strains from our study, these findings suggest a possible common source of infection.

Measles is one of the highly contagious human viral diseases. Despite the availability of vaccines, measles outbreak frequently occurs in many places, including Nepal, partly due to the lack of compliance with vaccination. In this study, we develop a novel transmission dynamics model to evaluate the effects of monitored vaccination programs to control and eliminate measles. We use our model, parameterized with the data from the measles outbreak in Nepal, to calculate the vaccinated reproduction number, $ R_v $, of measles in Nepal. We perform model analyses to establish the global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium point for $ R_v < 1 $ and the uniform persistence of the disease for $ R_v > 1 $. Moreover, we perform model simulations to identify monitored vaccination strategies for the successful control of measles in Nepal. Our model predicts that the monitored vaccination programs can help control the potential resurgence of the disease.

Abstract Background The risk of losing traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and their use and conservation is very high. Documenting knowledge on distribution and use of medicinal plants by different ethnic groups and at spatial scale on a single platform is important from a conservation planning and management perspective. The sustainable use, continuous practice, and safeguarding of traditional knowledge are essential. Communication of such knowledge among scientists and policy makers at local and global level is equally important, as the available information at present is limited and scattered in Nepal. Methods In this paper, we aimed to address these shortcomings by cataloguing medicinal plants used by indigenous ethnic groups in Nepal through a systematic review of over 275 pertinent publications published between 1975 and July 2021. The review was complemented by field visits made in 21 districts. We determined the ethnomedicinal plants hotspots across the country and depicted them in heatmaps. Results The heatmaps show spatial hotspots and sites of poor ethnomedicinal plant use documentation, which is useful for evaluating the interaction of geographical and ethnobotanical variables. Mid-hills and mountainous areas of Nepal hold the highest number of medicinal plant species in use, which could be possibly associated with the presence of higher human population and diverse ethnic groups in these areas. Conclusion Given the increasing concern about losing medicinal plants due to changing ecological, social, and climatic conditions, the results of this paper may be important for better understanding of how medicinal plants in use are distributed across the country and often linked to specific ethnic groups.

Abstract An 83‐year‐old‐male patient presented with obstructive jaundice, whose imagings were consistent with the cholangiocarcinoma of the distal common bile duct. The tumor markers were within normal limits. IgG4 level was raised; therefore, IgG4‐sclerosing cholangitis was made as the provisional diagnosis. Steroid therapy was started to which he responded well.

Background B cells play a pivotal role in regulating the immune response. The induction of B cell-mediated immunosuppressive function requires B cell activating signals. However, the mechanisms by which activated B cells mediate T-cell suppression are not fully understood.Methods We investigated the potential contribution of metabolic activity of activated B cells to T-cell suppression by performing in vitro experiments and by analyzing clinical samples using mass cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing.Results Here we show that following activation, B cells acquire an immunoregulatory phenotype and promote T-cell suppression by metabolic competition. Activated B cells induced hypoxia in T cells in a cell–cell contact dependent manner by consuming more oxygen via an increase in their oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Moreover, activated B cells deprived T cells of glucose and produced lactic acid through their high glycolytic activity. Activated B cells thus inhibited the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway in T cells, resulting in suppression of T-cell cytokine production and proliferation. Finally, we confirmed the presence of tumor-associated B cells with high glycolytic and OXPHOS activities in patients with melanoma, associated with poor response to immune checkpoint blockade therapy.Conclusions We have revealed for the first time the immunomodulatory effects of the metabolic activity of activated B cells and their possible role in suppressing antitumor T-cell responses. These findings add novel insights into immunometabolism and have important implications for cancer immunotherapy.

Medicinal plants are the primary source of traditional healthcare systems in many rural areas mostly in developing countries. This study aimed to document and analyze the diversity, distribution, and sustainability of the traditional medicinal plants used by the Gurung people of the Sikles region in western Nepal. Ethnobotanical data were collected through focus group discussions and individual interviews, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Prior informed consent was obtained before each interview. Quantitative ethnobotanical indices such as informant consensus factor, relative frequency of citation, and use values were also calculated. A possible association among these indices was tested using correlation analysis. A total of 115 wild medicinal plant species belonging to 106 genera and 71 families were documented. Asteraceae and Rosaceae were the dominant families whereas herbs were the most dominant life form. Roots were the most used plant part, paste was the most common method of preparation, and most of the medical formulations were taken orally. The highest number of medicinal plants were used to treat stomach disorders. The average informant consensus value of 0.79 indicates a high consensus among respondents in selecting medicinal plants. Lindera neesiana, Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora, Paris polyphylla, and Bergenia ciliata were found to be high-ranking medicinal plants based on the relative frequency of citation and use value. The genders did not affect medicinal plants’ knowledge but age had a significant correlation. Most of the informants agreed that medicinal plants are under pressure due to overharvesting and a lack of proper forest management practices. The number of medicinal plants reported from the study area indicates that the Gurung people possess rich traditional knowledge, and the vegetation of the Sikles region constitutes rich diversity of medicinal plants.

Objective: To study the spreading nature of Delta variant (B.1.617.2) dominated COVID-19 in Nepal to help the policymakers assess and manage health care facilities and vaccination programs. Methods: Deterministic mathematical models in the form of systems of ordinary differential equations were developed to describe the COVID-19 transmission in the high- and the low-risk regions of Nepal. The models were validated using the multiple data sets containing daily new cases in the whole country, the high-risk region, the low-risk region, and cases needing medical care, ICU, and ventilator. Results: We found the reproduction number of Rt=4.2 at the beginning of the second wave, larger than the first wave (∼1.8 estimated previously), indicating that the transmissibility of Delta variant is higher than the wild-type circulated during the first wave. Model predicts that ∼5% of the COVID-19 cases were reported in Nepal, estimating the seroprevalence of ∼63.9% as of July 2021, consistent with the survey conducted by the Government of Nepal. The seroprevalence was expected to reach 94.46% by April 2022, among which ∼46% would have both infection and vaccination. The expected cases from September 2021 to April 2022 is 111,300, among which 11,890 people might need medical care, 3590 need ICU, and 953 need ventilators. The COVID-19 cases and medical care needs could be significantly reduced with proper implementation of vaccination and social distancing. Conclusions: The data-driven mathematical models are useful to assess control programs in resource-limited countries. The appropriate combination of vaccination and social distancing are necessary to keep the pandemic under-control and manage the medical care facilities in Nepal.

Abstract Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Most cases are asymptomatic and when symptomatic, preoperative diagnosis of MD is poor. Intestinal obstruction, Malena or hematochezia, and inflammation are major symptoms. We report three cases of 18‐month, 2‐year, and 9‐year old male patients presenting with intestinal obstruction.

Post-disaster housing, constructed on a massive scale, often overlooks the indoor thermal environment, despite being a crucial design factor for residential satisfaction. This study examined the indoor thermal environment in post-Gorkha earthquake-reconstructed prototype and traditional vernacular houses in the Dolakha district of Nepal. It employed a questionnaire survey and measurement of indoor and outdoor temperature in both house types across two study locations: Panipokhari and Jillu, during the coldest winter month. Despite the indoor temperature in both house types falling below the ASHRAE comfort standard, the study found that prototype houses’ nighttime indoor temperatures were 2.1 °C lower in Panipokhari and 1 °C lower in Jillu compared to vernacular houses. This difference is attributed to the use of local building materials with low U-values, substantial thermal mass in vernacular houses, and a low window-to-wall ratio. Occupants expressed dissatisfaction with the thermal environment in prototype houses compared to vernacular ones. By incorporating climate-responsive features seen in vernacular houses, heating energy could have been reduced by approximately 21% in Panipokhari and 10% in Jillu, easing the economic burden on vulnerable households. These findings hold significance for policy-makers, implementers, designers, and other stakeholders involved in post-disaster resettlement housing programs, offering insights for enhancing long-term satisfaction and sustainability in such programs.

Abstract Background There are handful hypothesis-driven ethnobotanical studies in Nepal. In this study, we tested the non-random medicinal plant selection hypothesis using national- and community-level datasets through three different types of regression: linear model with raw data, linear model with log-transformed data and negative binomial model. Methods For each of these model, we identified over-utilized families as those with highest positive Studentized residuals and underutilized families with highest negative Studentized residuals. The national-level data were collected from online databases and available literature while the community-level data were collected from Baitadi and Darchula districts. Abstract Open dislocation of the ankle without associated fracture is extremely rare. Epstein's superior type of hip dislocation is the rarest type of hip dislocation. We reported a case of 50 years Nepalese gentleman who presented with a combination of these two rare orthopedic emergencies with the newly reported mechanism of injury by a garden tractor. Early extensive debridement of the wound with broad spectrum antibiotics coverage, reduction with delta frame external fixator, and postoperative rehabilitation helps in saving limb along with its function.

Abstract Intermediate syndrome with respiratory failure is a serious complication that can be fatal as in our case of a 24‐year‐old‐man who developed intermediate syndrome requiring intubation and respiratory support. Furthermore, the patient's socio‐economic situation significantly impacts the illness's progress and prognosis.

Introduction Lupus nephritis (LN), a severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is associated with high fatality rate in patients. The pathogenesis of lupus nephritis is complex and has not been fully elucidated. Kidney inflammation, renal cell damage, and accumulation of immune complexes in the glomerular basement membrane often occur in patients with lupus nephritis. Spermatid nuclear transition protein 1 (TNP1) might be a potentially interesting autoantigen in exploring the pathogenesis and therapy of lupus nephritis. Objective This study aimed to explore the effect of TNP1 and its complexes with anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies on the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interferon-α (IFN-α) in vitro. Methods We studied the effect of the synthetic peptide of the autoantigen on the pathogenic characteristics of the G2-6 and G5-8 antibodies in mouse macrophages, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, quantitative RT-PCR, western blotting, and flow cytometry. Results The antibodies exhibited cross-reactivity to spermatid TNP1 in direct-binding and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results of quantitative RT-PCR and western blotting revealed that the antibodies alone enhanced the levels of IL-6 and IFN-α transcripts and proteins, respectively. Flow cytometry revealed that treatment with the autoantigen enhanced the cell-penetrating activities of G2-6 and G5-8 and remarkably increased the cytokine levels. Conclusion TNP1 enhanced the cell-penetrating activities of anti-dsDNA auto-Abs, G2-6 and G5-8, and remarkably increased the levels of IL-6 and IFN-α in macrophages, suggesting that TNP1 and cell-penetrating pathogenic anti-dsDNA auto-Abs is potential targets for future therapeutic approaches to treat LN/SLE.

It is necessary to significantly accelerate the progress for optimal young child feeding practices in order to attain global nutrition goals and targets. Innovative and compelling communication approaches should be explored and tested to change social behaviours towards nutrition. A concept promoted in Nepal known as Poshan Nanglo (Nutrition Tray), is an interactive demonstration of locally available and nutritiously diverse foods. Using qualitative methodology, this study adopts the phenomenology method to understand preferences and perceptions of Poshan Nanglo among mothers of young children. A total of 305 mothers of children aged 6 to 23 months were interviewed from September 2019 to January 2020. 90%preferred Poshan Nanglo over printed materials. Three themes emerged: a simple and an easy way to learn, the use of real foods help to understand better and it is a practical approach. Thus mothers preferred and appreciated Poshan Nanglo to improve their understanding of good child feeding practices. These mothers also showed improvements in relating the importance of locally available nutritious foods for optimal dietary diversity. Approaching behaviour change should be informed and shaped by the beneficiaries’ interests and preferences. As a simple and sustainable approach in communicating about dietary diversity and good nutrition, Poshan Nanglo has wide relevance and potential.

Introduction: Genomic alterations in the juxtamembrane exon 14 splice sites in NSCLC lead to increased MET stability and oncogenesis. We present the largest cohort study of MET Exon 14 (METex14) using whole transcriptome sequencing. Methods: A total of 21,582 NSCLC tumor samples underwent complete genomic profiling with next-generation sequencing of DNA (592 Gene Panel, NextSeq, whole exome sequencing, NovaSeq) and RNA (NovaSeq, whole transcriptome sequencing). Clinicopathologic information including programmed death-ligand 1 and tumor mutational burden were collected and RNA expression for mutation subtypes and MET amplification were quantified. Immunogenic signatures and potential pathways of invasion were characterized using single-sample gene set enrichment analysis and mRNA gene signatures. Results: A total of 533tumors (2.47%) with METex14 were identified. The most common alterations were point mutations (49.5%) at donor splice sites. Most alterations translated to increased MET expression, with MET co-amplification resulting in synergistic increase in expression (q < 0.05). Common coalterations were amplifications of MDM2 (19.0% versus 1.8% wild-type [WT]), HMGA2 (13.2% versus 0.98% WT), and CDK4 (10.0% versus 1.5% WT) (q < 0.05). High programmed death-ligand 1 > 50% (52.5% versus 27.3% WT, q < 0.0001) and lower proportion of high tumor mutational burden (>10 mutations per megabase, 8.3% versus 36.7% WT, p < 0.0001) were associated with METex14, which were also enriched in both immunogenic signatures and immunosuppressive checkpoints. Pathways associated with METex14 included angiogenesis and apical junction pathways (q < 0.05). Conclusions: METex14 splicing alterations and MET co-amplification translated to higher and synergistic MET expression at the transcriptomic level. High frequencies of MDM2 and CDK4 co-amplifications and association with multiple immunosuppressive checkpoints and angiogenic pathways provide insight into potential actionable targets for combination strategies in METex14 NSCLC.

Traditional herbal remedies are used worldwide for treating both human and livestock health issues. Though such uses are relatively well-explored for humans, the ethnoveterinary uses of plant-based remedies in the healthcare choices of livestock in Nepal and associated knowledge are largely ignored. This is important as sustainable livestock production is an emerging issue. This study reviews the existing ethnobotanical studies conducted in Nepal and reports the use of 393 species of plants from 114 botanical families in ethnoveterinary practices. Thirty-four different ailments were treated using these plants. The present review revealed that Nepal has a rich diversity of ethnoveterinary plants. This study shows that traditional herbal medicine plays a significant role in meeting the livestock healthcare needs of Nepali farmers and hence is a viable practice. The study also contributes a wealth of knowledge about ethnoveterinary practices for further planning and use. This will provide an option for livestock farmers who cannot afford allopathic medicine or who are not allowed to use such medicine under organic farming schemes that are likely to be a part of sustainable livestock farming programs in Nepal soon.

Abstract Immunization with an insect cell lysate/baculovirus mixture containing recombinant porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spike protein induced high levels of neutralizing antibodies in both mice and piglets. However, immunization of piglets with this vaccine resulted in enhancement of disease symptoms and virus replication in vaccine recipients exposed to PEDV challenge. Thus, these observations demonstrate a previously unrecognized challenge of PEDV vaccine research, which has important implications for coronavirus vaccine development.

This study presents a detailed design, cost estimation and sensitivity analysis to determine the commercial viability of a Jatropha biodiesel plant with Nepal as a representative case. Here, we present a biodiesel production process utilizing dolomite PB-20, an inexpensive solid catalyst, that allows easy retrieval of catalysts for reuse and easier product separation compared to the conventional liquid catalyst based production process. The transesterification and the subsequent separation processes were simulated using Aspen Plus to determine the amount of raw materials, the sizes of the equipment's and the total utility required for producing 43 million liters biodiesel per year. The total capital cost and the production cost for the plant of this scale was calculated to be $23 million and $51 million respectively. Similarly, the final biodiesel selling price was calculated to be $1.23/l. The selling price of the biodiesel was found to be highly sensitive to the purchase cost of the Jatropha oil. A 25% reduction in the Jatropha oil purchase cost from the base case price of $0.97/l will lower the biodiesel selling price to $1.00/l making it competitive with petro-diesel (current selling price of $1.02/l). The economic viability of the dolomite catalyst based biodiesel production plant and thus, the adoption of biodiesel as a substitute for petro-diesel is strongly dependent on the purchase cost of the Jatropha oil. This study illustrates the potential of dolomite catalyst based biodiesel production process and provides an important reference value for a more detailed policy level study to develop appropriate biofuel policies and to make investment decisions.

Abstract Osteochondroma, the most frequent benign bone tumor, develops in the metaphysis of long bones including the proximal humerus, tibia, and distal femur. The involvement of talus is found only in a few patients. Here, we present a case of osteochondroma of the talus in a 52‐year‐old woman who presented with ankle pain and edema.

Introduction: The average life span has increased by about two decades in Nepal in last 30 years. With increasing longevity, geriatric health care is gaining much more importance. The statistical data regarding the geriatric skin disorders in Nepalese population is limited. The aim of this study to look for the patterns of skin diseases in the geriatric population of Nepal. Methodology: This is a retrospective, descriptive study where we reviewed the database of patients visiting the dermatology outpatient department of multispeciality teaching hospital in Nepal from August 2016 to July 2017. All patients from the age of 60 and above were included in the study. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Chi square test was done where relevant. Result: Total of 918 patients were included in the study with mean age of 69 years. Most common presentation was that of dermatitis (32.2%) which was followed by infectious condition (29.4%), pruritus (7.4%), psoriasis (4.6%), urticaria (3.9%), miliaria (3.9%) and others. Among the dermatitis, 23% of the patients had hand or feet eczema and 23% had sebohrreic dermatitis. Variability according to weather was noticed with in presentation of sebohrreic dermatitis, dermatophytic infections, miliaria and herpes zoster. Conclusion: This study concludes that dermatitis, infections and pruritus are the most significant dermatological morbidities in our population. It highlights the need of zoster vaccine for our elderly population as it is not a part of the routine vaccination scheme in Nepal.

Influenza D virus (IDV), with bovines as a primary host, circulates widely in cattle populations across North America and Eurasia. Here we report the identification of a novel IDV group with broad antigenicity in U.S. bovine herds, which is genetically different from previously known lineages of IDV.

Background: Dengue fever is known as a break-bone fever and its common symptoms are headaches, high grade fever, muscular, bone pains and decrease of platelets count. Community participation involving local government and household participants in controlling breeding areas of dengue mosquitoes is the only cost-effective and sustainable activities of ensuring prevention and control of Dengue fever. This study aimed to assess the perception of the general population regarding community participation in the prevention of dengue and to verify its effectiveness with the control practices observed at the homes in Dharan sub-metropolitan city of Province No 1. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 households at the Dharan sub-metropolitan city of Province no. 1 in Nepal from August to October 2019. The technique of sample collection was done using purposive sampling and data were collected using a pretested close-ended questionnaire and observational checklists. Results: Slightly over half of the respondents 129 (51.6%) reported a positive attitude regarding community practice and almost three out of five 157 (62.8%) houses were observed to have good dengue control practices. Abstract Bilateral clavicle fractures are uncommon and are mostly associated with polytrauma. The presence of concurrent serious injuries diverts the doctor's attention and causes the clavicular injury to be overlooked. Our report presents a 39‐year‐old male patient with bilateral clavicle fracture whom we managed surgically by open reduction and internal fixation.

Abstract This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to assess the robustness of designs and tools used in nutrition social behaviour change communication (NSBCC) interventions and establish their effectiveness. EBSCOhost as an umbrella database including Medline (Ovid) and CINAHL, EMBASE, and ProQUEST databases were searched for peer‐reviewed articles from January 1960 to October 2018. Additional sources were searched to identify all relevant studies including grey literature. Studies' biases were assessed according to Cochrane handbook. Pooled estimate of effectiveness of interventions on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices and child nutritional status with 95% confidence intervals were measured using random‐effects models. Eighty studies were included in this review: Fifty‐one (64%) were cluster randomised controlled trials (RCTs), 13 (16%) were RCTs and 16 (20%) quasi‐experimental. Of the included studies, 22 (27%) measured early initiation of breastfeeding, 38 (47%) measured exclusive breastfeeding, 29 (36%) measured minimum dietary diversity, 21 (26%) measured minimum meal frequency, 26 (32%) measured height for age z‐scores (HAZ), 23 (29%) measured weight for height z‐scores (WHZ), 27 (34%) measured weight for age z‐scores (WAZ), 20 (25%) measured stunting, 14 (17%) measured wasting, and 11 (14%) measured underweight. ABSTRACT Bacteremia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Rapid identification of pathogens for early targeted antimicrobial therapy is crucial for detecting emergence of antibiotic resistance and improving outcomes. However, there are limited data regarding the analytical performance of a rapid identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) method like Accelerate Pheno blood culture detection system compared with the conventional methods routinely used in microbiology laboratories. We undertook a systematic quality improvement (QI) study to compare AST results obtained with Accelerate Pheno system rapid ID/AST system with a standard reference method in a university hospital microbiology laboratory. This was a single center, retrospective (5/10/19 to 8/1/19) and prospective (8/1/19 to 1/31/20) study that evaluated all blood cultures growing Gram-negative rods (GNR). We compared AST results obtained using the reference disk diffusion (DD) susceptibility method with those obtained by the Accelerate Pheno system. We calculated the error rates and categorical agreement between the Accelerate Pheno system and DD for each organism and specific drug tested. We evaluated 355 blood cultures growing GNR, of which 284 met the inclusion criteria. We grouped all Enterobacterales (n = 263) for analysis (156 Escherichia coli, 60 Klebsiella spp., 20 Proteus mirabilis, 17 Enterobacter spp., and 10 Serratia marcescens). Twenty-one Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were analyzed separately. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the progressive destruction of articular cartilage with severe symptoms, including pain and stiffness. We investigated the anti-osteoarthritic effects of Prunella vulgaris (PV) and Gentiana lutea (GL) extract in primary cultured chondrocytes RAW 264.7 cells in vitro and destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)-induced OA mice in vivo. Primary chondrocytes were induced with IL-1β, and RAW 264.7 cells were treated with LPS and co-incubated with either individual extracts of PV and GL or different ratios of PV and GL mixture. For the OA animal model, the medial meniscus (DMM) was destabilized in 9-week-old male C57BL/6 mice. Treatment of individual PV and GL and combination of PV and GL extracts inhibited the mRNA expression level of COX2 in chondrocytes and RAW 264.7 cells. The optimized inhibitory effect was attained with a PV and GL combination at an 8:2 ratio (PG) without cytotoxic effects. PG extracts prevented the expression of catabolic factors (COX2, Mmp3, Mmp9, and Mmp13) and inflammatory mediator levels (PGE2 and collagenase). In addition, PG decreased subchondral sclerosis and increased BMD in the subchondral region of DMM-induced OA mice with protection of articular cartilage destruction by inhibiting inflammatory processes. This study suggests that PG may be an alternative medicinal herb for treatment of OA.

Natural fibers have attracted considerable attention in recent years because of their low cost, renewable, and eco-friendly nature. The study investigated the economic, social, medicinal, and traditional use of Himalayan Giant Nettle commonly called “Allo” (Girardinia diversifolia) in Nepal. The fiber extracted from “Allo” is one of the income sources for people living in rural mountainous region of Nepal. The traditional fiber processing techniques, use of locally available materials, and medicinal value helped to preserve “Allo.” Nevertheless, the resource stock is declining from its natural habitat due to changes in traditional grazing practices, rapid expansion of plantation of cash crops like large cardamom (Amomum subulatum) and Chirayito (Swertia chirayita) where “Allo” grows naturally. Cultivation, sustainable harvesting, and policy formulation on “one-door taxation” system are important to preserve this important natural fiber species.
