The aim of this review is to expose an insight into the suitability of the use of antimicrobial peptides as an alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of S. aureus infections, one of the most commonly bacteria developing AMR.

Enterobacteriaceae is a group of nosocomial pathogens that can colonize various sites and cause serious infections when host defenses are compromised. In this group of bacteria multi-drug resistant organisms have been described. AMR keeps spreading and while antibiotic development will always be subjected to the appearance of resistance, vaccines elicit protective immunity that could prevent transmission and infection and therefore, reduce or revert antimicrobial resistance. Yet, vaccines against critical enterobacteria need to be reassessed. Advances in vaccinology techniques, together with the identification of new targets, may allow a change in the vaccine design strategy, towards a more strain-specific approach. However, there are still many challenges directly related to the opportunistic nature of this pathogens and therefore, other alternative treatments with a therapeutic approach (e.g. mAb vaccines) should be also considered for this field.

The use of error-prone PCR in the development of mutants could allow the obtention of efficient therapeutic enzymes for the treatment of infections of P. aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients.

The Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, characterized by memory loss, cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. It is caused principally by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aß) peptide and Tau protein. Affecting over 35 million people worldwide, it is of an increased need the development of an early diagnostic based on the discovery of early, affordable and available non-invasive biomarkers (1). Recent evidence has demonstrated that the acetylation on the lysine 174 of Tau is an early critical pathological change to soluble Tau realized at the early stages in AD brains (Braak I-II), which leads to Tau accumulation and toxicity (2). However, the use of technologies with high sensibility will be required for its detection as this biomarker is expected to appear in low concentrations. For this reason, the current research project aims to validate the ac-K174 Tau as an early-diagnosis biomarker and to demonstrate its detection with a device proposal, as it could serve as a reliable biomarker for the detection of AD during early stages.

La diferenciació de la regió lumbar en la columna vertebral de tetràpodes dóna lloc a vertebres lumbars no articulades amb costelles. Aquestes vertebres poden presentar una morfologia marcadament diferenciada a la observada en vertebres toràciques, la diferenciació morfològica de les lumbars es major o menor en funció del clade de tetràpodes en qüestió i el tipus de locomoció emprada per aquest. En mamífers la presència d'una regió lumbar diferenciada amb funció principalment locomotora optimitza la marxa ràpida quadrúpeda terrestre.

Un Genome-Scale Metabolic Model és un model computacional que representa la xarxa metabòlica d'un organisme. Aquesta xarxa es construeix a partir de l'associació entre els gens anotats d'un genoma, les proteïnes que expressen i les reaccions que catalitzen. La xarxa construïda es representa de forma matemàtica i permet predir la distribució de fluxos utilitzant eines de programació lineal. D'aquesta manera, es genera un model que és capaç de reproduir el comportament cel·lular i que es pot emprar per predir creixement, estudiar les interaccions entre patogen-hoste i optimitzar la producció d'un metabòlit específic.

Las relaciones coloniales y de esclavitud entre ambos continentes dejaron una huella imborrable en las sociedades y su genoma que continúa hasta nuestro días. El estudio de la estructura genética de la población mezclada de América es fundamental para desarrollar estudios de asociación más precisos y comprender la epidemiología de las enfermedades. Además, ayuda a completar el registro histórico, en ocasiones, limitado y con ello a entender el racismo estructural en la sociedad americana.

La reprogramación del código genético consiste en asignar codones ya existentes o nuevos a aminoácidos no canónicos ncAAs. Uno de los enfoques más emblemáticos es la supresión del codón de terminación UAG denominado ámbar. Las metodologías necesarias se desarrollaron inicialmente en E coli y han sido adaptadas posteriormente a otros organismos. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir los procesos que constituyen este enfoque, y que han abierto las puertas a nuevos avances en el campo.

Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage worldwide. Its industry generates more than 66 M€/year only in Spain, and this value is expected to increase in the coming years. In the project at hand, we describe the design of a small-scale brewery for the production of Session India Pale Ale. Our main objective is to achieve an annual production of about 150,000L, which can be translated to about 450,000 bottles per year. Moreover, we want to transform organic waste from the microbrewery into lactic acid. As a result of computer-aided design using SuperPro Designer ®, we will attain a reasonable theoretical yield while supporting sustainable industrial processes.

Els enzims són de gran interès per a la majoria de les indústries, no obstant la seva caracterització en el laboratori és costosa i molt laboriosa, fet que ha impulsat el desenvolupament de tecnologies de predicció de les activitats dels enzims. Malgrat això, els enzims industrials han de tenir unes propietats molt específiques com per exemple alta especificitat, alta activitat en condicions no biològiques i alta promiscuitat, característiques que no estan ben cobertes per les eines de predicció actuals. Per aquest motiu, amb aquest projecte, s'intenta mitigar el problema creant classificadors binaris que poden predir la promiscuitat de les esterases. Enzymes are of great interest for a vast variety of industries; however, the experimental characterization is very time consuming and expensive. Moreover, industrial enzymes need to adapt to nonbiological conditions while maintaining high activity, promiscuity and stereo-selectivity, properties that are not well covered, currently, by prediction technologies which means that their characterization still relies solely on experimentation. This project has the intention of mitigating the problem by developing binary classifiers and multi-classifiers that can predict the promiscuity of esterases, one of the many industrially relevant enzymes.

L'aparició i propagació de patògens farmacoresistents, compromet la capacitat humana per tractar infeccions comunes. És alarmant la ràpida i exponencial propagació de bacteris multiresistents que provoquen infeccions intractables amb antimicrobians tradicionals. L'ús indegut d'antimicrobians en la indústria alimentària, amb valors de consum molt superiors als d'ús humà, amb altres finalitats que el tractament d'infeccions, ha provocat l'aparició de patògens resistents en entorns de producció animal. S'han observat taxes elevades de resistència als antibiòtics utilitzats habitualment en tractaments contra malalties infeccioses humanes. Molts estudis situen a la ramaderia com el principal reservori i font principal de disseminació d'aquests patògens resistents. Actualment hi ha estratègies de mitigació disponibles per fer front a la problemàtica, pero són limitades; especialment en les explotacions ramaderes que són de retruc les principals generadores d'aliments per a consum humà. La comunitat científica coincideix en què, si bé l'aparició i disseminació de les resistències ha sigut ràpida, la reversió és complicada i si es pot produir és molt lenta. La resistència antimicrobiana, sembla ser doncs una problemàtica inevitable i que haurem de patir durant les properes dècades.

Climate change is affecting forest communities all around the globe. Increased aridity due to warmer temperatures is causing widespread cases of drought-induced forest dieback, thus altering forest dynamics. This is particularly noticeable in dry areas, such as the Mediterranean, where many species are found at the dry edge of their distribution. In this study we use a forest succession model, ForClim, to bring some insight into how two currently dominant species (Pinus sylvestris and Quercus humilis) will behave under the expected climate change in Catalonia, NE Spain, where they currently coexist. El canvi climàtic està afectant les comunitats forestals a nivell global. L'increment de l'aridesa causat per les altes temperatures està provocant un augment de la mortalitat, alterant així les dinàmiques dels boscos. Aquest fenomen és particularment visible en zones seques, com el Mediterrani, on moltes espècies es troben en el límit més sec de la seva distribució. En aquest estudi fem servir un model de successió forestal, ForClim, per aportar informació sobre com dos espècies actualment dominants (Pinus sylvestris i Quercus humilis) es comportaran sota el canvi climàtic esperat a Catalunya, on actualment coexisteixen.

Most epidemiological modelling is done at a national level, assuming that the whole country is homogeneous. However, most epidemiological models do not model space explicitly and populations are considered to be unstructured with homogenous interactions, which could be problematic for large territories where the interacition networks can differ greatly between regions. In this thesis, I focused on this spatial variability by applying a simple model at a scale smaller than the whole country - the Spanish provinces - and compared the spread dynamics in different locations.

The shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is a species traditionally exploited in sub-Saharan Africa. The main product obtained from its seeds, through a long and strenuous process for women, is shea butter. The main objective of this bibliographic review is to collect information on different ways to improve the process, the situation of women workers and the conservation of the species. Results are presented in 4 main lines. Firstly, the threats that affect the tree and certain recommendations for practices to improve its conservation. Secondly, different uses of the resources obtained from the shea. Thirdly, the study of the process and the provision of optimized methodologies to achieve greater efficiency. Finally, the current market situation is analysed, setting out the main threats and opportunities. It is concluded that, despite the difficult situation in the sector, the shea market offers great opportunities. To achieve them, the education of the population, the provision of efficient legislation and the attraction of stable funding sources are essential. Cooperatives would stand out as the best global option to the market. La economía circular, en oposición a la economía lineal, se basa en la intersección de los aspectos ambientales, económicos y sociales, manteniendo el valor de los recursos el mayor tiempo posible y minimizando el desperdicio. El árbol del karité (Vitellaria paradoxa) es una especie tradicionalmente explotada en el África subsahariana. El principal producto obtenido de sus semillas, a través de un proceso largo y extenuante para las mujeres, es la manteca de karité. El objetivo principal de esta revisión bibliográfica es recopilar información sobre diferentes formas de mejorar el proceso, la situación de las trabajadoras y la conservación de la especie. Los resultados se presentan en 4 líneas principales. En primer lugar, las amenazas que afectan al árbol y ciertas recomendaciones de prácticas para mejorar su conservación. En segundo lugar, diferentes usos de los recursos obtenidos del karité. En tercer lugar, el estudio del proceso y el aporte de metodologías optimizadas para lograr una mayor eficiencia. Finalmente, se analiza la situación actual del mercado, exponiendo las principales amenazas y oportunidades. Se concluye que, a pesar de la difícil situación en el sector, el mercado del karité ofrece grandes oportunidades. Para alcanzarlas, la educación de la población, la disposición de legislación eficiente y la captación de fuentes de financiación estables son esenciales. Las cooperativas destacarían como la mejor opción global para el mercado. L'arbre del karité (Vitellaria paradoxa) és una espècie tradicionalment explotada a l'Àfrica subsahariana. El principal producte obtingut de les seves llavors, a través d'un procés llarg i extenuant per a les dones, és la mantega de karité. L'objectiu principal d'aquesta revisió bibliogràfica és recopilar informació sobre diferents formes de millorar el procés, la situació de les treballadores i la conservació de l'espècie. Els resultats es presenten en 4 línies principals. En primer lloc, les amenaces que afecten l'arbre i certes recomanacions de pràctiques per millorar la seva conservació. En segon lloc, diferents usos dels recursos obtinguts del karité. En tercer lloc, l'estudi del procés i l'aportació de metodologies optimitzades per aconseguir una major eficiència. Finalment, s'analitza la situació actual de mercat, exposant les principals amenaces i oportunitats. Es conclou que, tot i la difícil situació en el sector, el mercat del karité ofereix grans oportunitats. Per assolir-les, l'educació de la població, la disposició de legislació eficient i la captació de fonts de finançament estables són essencials. Les cooperatives destacarien com la millor opció global per al mercat.

El grado en Genética cumple en 2020 10 años. Hasta la fecha no se ha hecho ningún tipo de estudio que evalúe el estado actual (académico y laboral) de las 7 generaciones ya graduadas. Por ello, este es uno de los propósitos de este trabajo, así como el de estudiar la viabilidad de crear una asociación de genetista.

Les dones en la ciència pateixen biaixos de gènere tant en contractació, autoria, reconeixement i promoció (Elsevier, 2020). La perspectiva de gènere en el sistema educatiu és clau per a superar els falsos objectivismes de la ciència tradicional.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both behaviour and social communication, alterations that are often combined with other comorbidities, such as gastrointestinal dysfunction. Bearing in mind the role of gut microbiota (GM) in the correct Central Nervous System development and function, it has been postulated that gastrointestinal dysbiosis, which commonly affects ASD patients, is involved in this disorder's aetiology. For this reason, using probiotics to restore the gastrointestinal equilibrium could be a good therapeutic strategy for this disease.

Currently, one of the main bottlenecks in the development of many human gene therapies is the lack of large-scale production methods of the required vectors. Owing to this fact, this work focuses on the development of an adeno-associated viral vector production process, specifically serotype 9 (AAV9), using suspension human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The proposed production process, based on perfusion culture in a rocking motion bioreactor, proves to be a robust method, achieving high yields greater than 2·10^5 vg/cell in serum-free conditions and without the need to use helper virus due to the triple plasmid transfection method using polyethylenimine (PEI).

On December 2019, several cases of pneumonia caused by a novel β-coronavirus identified were reported in Wuhan, China. The virus was named SARS-CoV-2 and the related disease COVID-19. On 25th May of 2020, the COVID-19 had affected more than 200 countries and territories, with 5.267.419 infections and 341.155 deceased.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract and the second cause of cancer death. In the past years sequencing studies in human tumour tissues and stools specimens, along with functinal studies in animal models have recognized the possible role of F. nucleatum in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG)is the Gram-negative diplococci responsible for gonorrhoea. As most of the NG clinical isolates have developed resistance to at list one of the antibiotic drugs prescribed to this sexually transmitted disease, including tetracyclines (T) and macrolides (M), the microorganism susceptibility pattern should determine the choice of therapy1,2. Several studies have shown that MALDI-ToF significantly accelerates the resistance phenotyping compared to the commonly used routine antibiotic susceptibility tests.
