MITICA ,ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility ,SPIDER - Abstract
The ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNB) injectors, one of the tools necessary both to achieve burning conditions and to control plasma instabilities, are characterized by such demanding parameters as to require the construction of a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) dedicated to their development and optimization. The NBTF was realized in Padua (Italy), with the direct contribution of the Italian government, through the Consorzio RFX as the host entity, IO, the in kind contributions of three Domestic Agencies (F4E, JADA, INDA) and the technical and scientific support of various European laboratories and universities. The NBTF hosts two experiments: SPIDER and MITICA. The former is devoted to the optimization of the HNB and DNB ion sources and to the achievement of the required source performances. MITICA is the full size prototype of the ITER HNB, with an ion source identical to the one used in SPIDER. This paper gives an overview of the progress of the NBTF realization with particular emphasis on issues discovered during this phase of activities and to the adopted solutions in order to minimize the impact on the schedule while maintaining the goals of the facilities. The realization of MITICA is well advanced; it is expected to enter into operation in 2023 due to the long procurement times of the in-vessel mechanical components. The power supply designed to operate at 1MV are in an advanced phase of realization; all the high voltage components have been installed and the complex insulation test phase has begun in 2018. The construction and installation of SPIDER plant systems was successfully completed with their integration into the facility. The mechanical components of the ion source were installed inside the vessel and connected to the plants. The integrated commissioning with control (CODAS), protection and safety systems ended positively and the first experimental phase began. Finally, the first results of the SPIDER experimentation and of the 1MV insulation tests on the MITICA high voltage components are presented.

Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Zeff (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H98,y2 close to 1 and βN ∼ 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

In order to evaluate deposition of cesium (Cs) in the plasma grid (PG) and investigate the origin of the gradual degradation of the negative ion current in a 100 s long pulsed operation in the JT-60SA negative ion source, Cs behavior in the source is model. To do this, Cs adsorption/desorption coefficient with a wide range of temperature is experimentally measured by a surface ionization detector and a quartz crystal microbalance. As a result, both of the adsorption and desorption are drastically varied at temperature range from room temperature to 100 °C. Based on these data, the model calculates the amounts of the Cs mass in the chamber wall and PG. The calculation result shows that, in the operation, an increase of temperature in the chamber wall (T
wall ) causes the evaporation of the huge amount of Cs in it. This leads to over pilling-up of Cs in the PG and the slight degradation of the negative ion production. Therefore, it is found that the constant temperature operation is needed to sustain the thickness of the Cs monolayer in the PG, and the Twall is desired to be less than 60 °C to suppress the evaporation of Cs in the chamber wall. A thermal beam emittance measurement method is developed specifically to measure high power density beams for the ITER neutral beam injection system (NBI)’s. A one-dimensional carbon-fiber composite (CFC) target is utilized to withstand the high current densities of the negative hydrogen beam making the beam emittance measurement possible. Schemes for the emittance measurement were discussed since beam instabilities are present in various stages of the beam phase. The allowable time for the measurement will be less than 2 seconds and it’s necessary to monitor the CFC temperature to not exceed 2000°C. The proposed measurement scheme to minimize beam instabilities is through the constant operation of the arc discharge and pulsed beam extraction. Mechanical structures are also being designed for rapid measurements to select different phases of the beam and for implementing the measurement system to long pulse beam operation. The negative ion accelerators for the ITER neutral beam system has been designed by using the conventional beam codes for the positive ion accelerators because mechanism of meniscus formation of negative ions has not been clarified well. In this way, the operational window of the negative ion accelerators can be simply predicted, but the grid heat loading by peripheral beam (beam halo) could not be simulated. To understand the applicable range of the conventional codes to the negative ion accelerators, and then to understand the negative ion meniscus consequently, the benchmark tests between the conventional codes (BEAMORBT (BO) [1] and SLACCAD (SC)[2]) and the experiments have been performed under a joint experiment by RFX and QST on the Negative Ion Test Stand in Naka. Figure 1 shows one numerical results as an example with the grid configuration. The extraction voltage (Vext) is applied between the plasma grid (PG) and the extraction grid (EXG). The acceleration voltage (Vacc) is applied between EXG and the grounded grid (GG). Figure 2 shows the beam divergence angle as a function of Vext at Vacc of 20 kV. Vext with the minimum divergence angle are shown around 4.0 kV both in the numerical codes and the experimental result. The operational window can be predicted in the numerical codes. However, the absolute values of the divergence angle of the experiment was larger than those of the numerical result. One of reasons will be that the numerical code cannot represent the beam halo. Even in the numerical results, the divergence angle in the BO is slightly lower than that of the SC. To understand the meniscus effect to the beam divergence, the relationship between meniscus depth ?zmenis and beam divergence in the numerical results was compared as shown in Figure 3. At the International Maritime Organization (IMO) the new generation intact stability criteria is now under development. This paper describes a current status of this development for facilitating discussion among experts in stability research. It was already agreed to consist of 3 levelled criteria and onboard operational guidances for four different stability failure modes, which include pure loss of stability, parametric rolling, broaching and stability under dead ship condition. Member states submitted available methodologies with sample calculation results so far but the first level criteria for pure loss of stability and parametric rolling are still missing and the first level criterion for broaching is required to be further upgraded. More verification and validation are essential for finalising this criterion set.
