BaFe2(As, P)2 thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Single phase and c-axis oriented thin films were obtained on both LaAlO3 (LAO) and MgO substrates. The critical temperature (Tc) of the thin films grown on LAO substrates showed a P content dependence very similar to single crystals, while those grown on MgO showed a distinctly different dependence. Lattice parameter measurements showed that the thin films grown on MgO were under tensile strain, while no structural deformation was observed for the thin films grown on LAO substrates. The strain effect accounts well for the difference in the P content dependence of Tc. We also obtained the Poisson’s ratio from the observed strain, which gave a reasonable value and a systematic change with the P content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SiGe bulk crystal fabricated by a multicomponent zone-melting method was used as a substrate for epitaxial growth of GaAs. Compared with conventional GaAs/Ge heterostructure, the lattice mismatch of GaAs/Si[sub 0.022]Ge[sub 0.978] was confirmed to be reduced by a decrease of the peak separation of (400) x-ray diffraction from the epitaxial GaAs layer and the substrate. Furthermore, the linewidth of the rocking curve of GaAs on SiGe was found to be narrower than that of GaAs on Ge. These results show that SiGe is promising material as an alternative substrate to Ge for realization of exactly lattice-matched GaAs/SiGe solar cells. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Human colostrum and mature milk contain oligosaccharides (Os), designated as human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). Approximately 200 varieties of HMOs have been characterized. Although HMOs are not utilized as an energy source by infants, they have important protective functions, including pathogenic bacteria and viral infection inhibitors and immune modulators, among other functions, and HMOs stimulate brain-nerve development. The Os concentration is average 11 g/L in human milk but >100 mg/L in mature bovine milk, which is used to manufacture infant formula, suggesting that human-identical milk oligosaccharides (HiMOs) should be incorporated into milk substitutes. Some infant formulas incorporating 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N - neotetraose are now commercially available, and intervention trials have been concluded. Background: Cutavirus (CuV) is associated with mycosis fungoides; however, the CuV status in parapsoriasis en plaques (PP), a premalignant inflammatory condition of mycosis fungoides, has not been fully delineated., Methods: Fifty-five Japanese patients with chronic inflammatory skin diseases, including 13 patients with PP, were studied., Results: CuV DNA was detected significantly more frequently in biopsies of the lesional skin from patients with PP (38%; 4 of 13) than in those from patients with other inflammatory skin diseases (2%; 1 of 42; P = .009). All CuV-positive PP cases were of the large-plaque parapsoriasis (LPP) subtype. The viral loads ranged from 83 450 to 2 164 170 copies/103 cells. We recovered near-full-length CuV sequences from the CuV-positive LPP biopsies, all of which were of the Japanese/Asian genotype. The CuV genome appeared to be present within lymphoid cells infiltrating the epidermis and dermis. CuV NS1 and VP1 gene transcripts were also detected in the affected tissues., Conclusions: The detection of high levels of CuV DNA with the expression of viral mRNA suggests a potential role for CuV in the pathogenesis of LPP, making it necessary to study further the impact of CuV, especially regarding the viral genotype, on the outcomes of patients with CuV-positive LPP., Competing Interests: Potential conflicts of interest. In order to elucidate the origins of the stable structures of dirhodium(II) tetrakis[ N -phthaloyl-( S )- tert -leucinate] and the four derivatives with halogenated aromatic rings, the conformational stability and intramolecular interactions were investigated by DFT calculations. In all of these complexes, the conformation in which all ligands face in the same direction is the most stable. When adjacent ligands are in the same orientation, destabilization due to exchange repulsion is larger than that when they are in opposite orientations. However, this destabilizing effect is reversed by the sum of the stabilizing effects of the electronic and charge transfer interactions. The imide carbonyl group plays an important role in these stabilizing interactions. The negatively charged site and bond orbitals in the imide carbonyl group interact with the positively charged sites and bond orbitals in the aromatic ring, the carboxylate group, and the α-position of the carboxylate group in the adjacent ligands. In addition, the lone-pair orbitals of the halogen atoms contribute to conformational stabilization by interacting with the vacant orbitals in the adjacent ligands. However, the combinations of these charged sites or bond orbitals, which effectively contribute to the stabilization, are different for each complex.

Bacteriophage (phage) KHP40 was previously isolated from the supernatant of a culture of Helicobacter pylori KMT83 cells. In this study, we analysed the infection characteristics of KHP40, phage release pattern from KMT83 cells, and state of KHP40 DNA in KMT83 cells. The findings revealed that KHP40 phage showed varied adsorption efficiencies for different strains, long latent periods, and small burst sizes. Additionally, KHP40 activity was maintained at pH 2.5-12. KHP40 phages were released during the vegetative growth phase of the KMT83 cells. PCR analysis demonstrated that KHP40 DNA was stably maintained in KMT83 clones. Next-generation sequencing analysis revealed the presence of two distinct types of circular double-stranded DNA in H. pylori KMT83 cells. One was an H. pylori-specific DNA consisting of 1 578 403 bp, and the other was a 26 412-bp sequence that represented the episomal form of phage KHP40 DNA. Furthermore, defective KHP40-lysogenic DNA was detected in the H. pylori-specific DNA, the deleted portion of which appeared to have been transferred to another location in the bacterial genome. Background/aims: Endoscopic biliary drainage is the gold standard treatment for cholangitis. The two methods of biliary drainage are endoscopic biliary stenting and nasobiliary drainage. A novel integrated outside biliary stent and nasobiliary drainage catheter system (UMIDAS NB stent; Olympus Medical Systems) was recently developed. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of this stent in the treatment of cholangitis caused by common bile duct stones or distal bile duct strictures., Methods: We conducted a retrospective pilot study by examining the medical records of patients who required endoscopic biliary drainage for cholangitis due to common bile duct stones or distal bile duct strictures, and who were treated with a UMIDAS NB stent, between December 2021 and July 2022., Results: Records of 54 consecutive patients were reviewed. Technical and clinical success rates were 47/54 (87.0%) and 52/54 (96.3%), respectively. Adverse events were observed in 12 patients, with six patients experiencing pancreatitis as an adverse event, following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Regarding late adverse events, five cases of biliary stent migration into the bile duct were observed. Disease-related death occurred in one patient., Conclusion: The outside-type UMIDAS NB stent is an efficacious new method for biliary drainage and can be applied to many indications.

Taste is an essential factor for evaluating the quality of agricultural products. However, it is usually difficult to compare data acquired at different times or by different people because there is no invariant reference and because the evaluation methods are largely subjective. Here, we addressed these problems by developing a method for standardizing strawberry sourness and sweetness intensities using a taste sensor approach with a taste standard solution composed of sour and sweet compounds. This standard solution allows highly efficient sensor measurements because it contains the standard compounds citric acid and sucrose. In addition, we found that polyphenol destabilized the sensor response for strawberry sweetness, and its removal from the sample by appropriate treatment with polyvinylpolypyrrolidone allowed stable evaluation of the sweetness intensity. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma associated with chronic inflammation (DLBCL-CI) develops in the setting of long-standing inflammation. This type of lymphoma may have specific expression profiles of chemokines involved in the pathogenesis of DLBCL-CI. EBV-positive pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL) is a prototype of DLBCL-CI and represents a valuable model for the study of this disease category. Using a panel of PAL cell lines, we found that PAL cells expressed and secreted C-X-C motif chemokine ligands 9 and 10 (CXCL9 and CXCL10), the ligands of CXCR3, in contrast to EBV-negative DLBCL cell lines, which did not. Culture supernatants from PAL cell lines attracted CXCR3-expressing CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and CD56 + natural killer cells from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. PAL cells injected into mice also attracted CXCR3-positive cytotoxic lymphocytes that expressed interferon-γ. The expression of CXCL9 and CXCL10 was detected in PAL tumor biopsy samples from patients, and CXCR3-positive lymphocytes were abundant in the tissue samples. Collectively, these findings suggest that CXCL9 and CXCL10 are produced by PAL cells and can elicit cytotoxic responses via CXCR3. This chemokine system is also likely to contribute to tissue necrosis, which is a signature histological feature of DLBCL-CI. Backgrounds and Objectives: Although pancreatic cancer (PC) has an extremely poor prognosis, the 5-year survival rate of patients with pancreatic high-grade precancerous lesion without invasive carcinoma (PHP) is favorable. PHP diagnosis and identification of patients requiring intervention are needed. We aimed to validate a modified PC detection scoring system regarding its detection ability for PHP and PC in the general population., Subjects and Methods: We modified an existing PC detection scoring system that incorporates low-grade risk (LGR) factors (family history, presence of diabetes mellitus [DM] or worsening DM, heavy drinking, smoking, stomach symptoms, weight loss, and pancreatic enzyme) and high-grade risk (HGR) factors (new-onset DM, familial PC, jaundice, tumor biomarkers, chronic pancreatitis, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, cysts, hereditary PC syndrome, and hereditary pancreatitis). Each factor was scored as one point; LGR score ≥3 points and/or HGR score ≥1 point (positive scores) were indicative of PC. The newly modified scoring system incorporated main pancreatic duct dilation as an HGR factor. The PHP diagnosis rate using this scoring system combined with EUS was prospectively analyzed., Results: Among 544 patients with positive scores, 10 had PHP. The diagnosis rates were 1.8% for PHP and 4.2% for invasive PC. Although the number of LGR and HGR factors tended to increase with PC progression, none of the individual factors were significantly different between patients with PHP and those without lesions., Conclusion: The newly modified scoring system evaluating multiple factors associated with PC could potentially identify patients with higher risk of PHP or PC., Competing Interests: None
