60. Plant-derived smoke water and karrikinolide (KAR1) enhance physiological activities, essential oil yield and bioactive constituents of Mentha arvensis L.

Abstract

Introduction: The current study was carried out with the hypothesis that foliar application of plant-derived smoke water (PDSW) and karrikinolide (KAR1) might enhanced the plant growth, physiology, and essential oil production of the Mentha arvensis L. Karrikinolide (KAR1) is one of the most important bioactive constituents of PDSW. Methods: Mint (Mentha arvensis L.) was grown in natural conditions in the nethouse. Different concentrations of PDSW (1:125, 1:250, 1:500 and 1:1000 v/v) and KAR1 (10-9 M, 10-8 M, 10-7 M and 10-6 M) were used as foliar-spray treatments, using double-distilled water as control. The PDSW was prepared by burning the dried wheat-straw that acted as a growth-promoting substance. Results: Foliar-spray treatment 1:500 v/v of PDSW and 10-8 M of KAR1 proved optimal for enhancing all morphological, physiological, and essential-oil yield related parameters. In comparison with the control, 1:500 v/v of PDSW and 10-8 M of KAR1 increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) the height of mint plant (19.23% and 16.47%), fresh weight (19.30% and 17.44%), dry weight (35.36% and 24.75%), leaf area (18.22% and 17.46%), and leaf yield per plant (28.41% and 23.74%). In addition, these treatments also significantly increased the photosynthetic parameters, including chlorophyll fluorescence (12.10% and 11.41%), total chlorophyll content (25.70% and 20.77%), and total carotenoid content (29.77% and 27.18%). Likewise, 1:500 v/v of PDSW and 10-8 M of KAR1 significantly increased the essential-oil content (37.09% and 32.25%), essential oil productivity per plant (72.22% and 66.66%), menthol content (29.94% and 25.42%), menthyl acetate content (36.90% and 31.73%), and menthone content (44.38% and 37.75%). Furthermore, the TIC chromatogram of the GCMS analysis revealed the presence of 34 compounds, 12 of which showed major peak areas. Discussion: Treatment 1: 500 v/v of PDSW proved better than the treatment 10-8 M of KAR1 with regard to most of the parameters studied. The outcome of the study can be used as a recommendation tool for agricultural and horticultural crops, since it costs much lesser than that of KAR1. Abstract

Aims: This study aims to investigate the role of glyoxal modified LDL in the immunopathology of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Background: Glycoxidation of proteins is widely studied in relation to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Objective: This study probed the glyoxal mediated modifications in LDL, analyzed the immunogenicity of the glycated LDL and ascertained the presence of circulating antibodies against modified LDL in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), coronary artery disease (CAD) and patients with both (T2DM+CAD). Methods: Glyoxal mediated modifications in LDL were studied by multiple spectroscopic techniques, high-performance liquid chromatography and electron microscopy. Immunization studies were carried in New Zealand rabbits. The presence of antibodies against glyoxal modified LDL in immunized rabbits and human subjects was analyzed by ELISA. Results: Glyoxal altered the structural integrity of LDL and led to the formation of AGEs. It decreased the alpha-helix content of LDL; increased β sheet formation, increased carbonyl content and decreased free lysine and arginine content. Modified LDL showed aggregation, generation of of Nε- (Carboxymethyl) lysine and the formation of amorphous type aggregates. It exhibited high antigenicity and generated a specific immune response that shared common antigenic determinants with other glycated proteins. Direct binding data showed the presence of anti-glyoxal modified LDL antibodies in patients with T2DM, CAD and patients with both T2DM and CAD. Further analysis in competitive binding assay revealed specific binding characteristics of auto-antibodies. Sera from patients with T2DM+CAD exhibited the highest binding with glyoxal modified LDL. Conclusion: Glyoxal-modified LDL has neo-antigenic determinants that cause the generation of circulating antibodies in diabetes and coronary artery disease. The study might have potential relevance in biomarker development.

Abstract

MORE AXILLARY GROWTH 2 (MAX2) is an F-box protein, containing leucine-rich repeats. It is a common regulator in signalling pathways of both karrikin and strigolactone, and has several homologs such as MAX1, MAX3, and MAX4, which play a key role in the biosynthesis of strigolactone. It also interacts with various receptors and repressors of karrikin and strigolactone. Karrikins are a group of plant growth regulators found in the smoke of burning plant material and had the ability to stimulate seed germination, whereas strigolactone is a newly discovered plant hormone that regulates shoot and root branching and plays a vital role in hypocotyl growth and photomorphogenesis; strigolactone also helps in establishing the symbiosis between root and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi regarding symbiosis. MAX2 protein also acts against drought, salt, and osmotic stresses. It interacts with various phytohormones in order to regulate seed germination as well as shoot and root branching. This review discusses about the relationship of MAX2 protein with other proteins and repressors during signalling pathways of karrikin and strigolactone and their antagonistic effects on seed and plant's life. 78. Analysis of The Legal Frameworks of Indigenous People’s Rights Over Their Natural Resources And The Impacts of Extractive Industries

Abstract

Extractive industries are gradually demolishing indigenous people’s lands for collecting natural resources including gold, iron, copper, oil, coal and other natural minerals, from the earth though some international conventions protect their rights. Over the past decades, many international conventions had recognised some legal rights of indigenous people over their lands and also developed some legal protections to safeguard those rights. This paper aims to examine some international legal frameworks of indigenous people’s rights over their natural resources and analyse some significant impacts of the extractive industries on the legal rights of indigenous people over their lands. The qualitative doctrinal research method has been employed to find out the data and analyse them. This study has identified that human rights risks are linked with mining, oil, and gas extraction falling unreasonably on indigenous people. This research has found that extractive industries violate the UNDRIP and the ILO (convention 169) conventions by taking possession of the lands of indigenous people and extracting natural resources from their lands. This paper has settled by recommending, among other things that the UNDRIP and the ILO (convention 169) take the incentives to progress a region wide framework for extractive industries where the human rights of indigenous people are well protected specially the rights of their lands.

Abstract

Body massage is a service-oriented business that offers amenities to tourists to satisfy their particular desires. It is one of the attractive segments in tourism industry in the modern world even in Islamic countries which provide facilities for Muslim travellers. The massage is given by using a specific technique on body by following a unique culture. It brings a kind of natural healing and care for some injuries. However, it is associated with feelings of pleasure, wellbeing and luxury with natural sensory experiences. The professional masseurs have demanded that they are confused about the basic features of the Shari’ah compliant massage as the concept has yet to be developed. There are also many unanswered questions from the customers and the operators. This paper aims to identify the functions of body massage and key factors to enrich the Islamic hospitality in the contemporary world. The qualitative approach has been chosen to answer the research question of this study and observation approach has been applied to find the data. This study has found that the professional massage can be opened to achieve the business objectives and the commercial values if it complies with the principles of Shari’ah. Traditional masseur services conflict with local decency and Islamic doctrines as they carry not only sensual enjoyment, but also sexual pleasure which leads to homosexuality. Thus, it becomes ethically ambiguous character. Finally, in the realistic perspective, this paper helps to find out the potential business improvement of Islamic hospitality services mainly in utilizing the functions of body massage.

Abstract

Domicile is a legal terminology which discusses the connection between a personal and a sovereign state. It provides a dualistic character in private international law. It also conveys international unity with domestic acknowledgment and implementation as well as autonomous actions with the private affairs. This study aims to illustrate the function and nature of domicile as personal connecting factor in decision making to the choice of law. The qualitative approach has been chosen to discuss this study and to find out the data. This research has found that domicile originates with different foreign elements in sui generis because it depends on judiciary system, the nature of disputes and the covenants accompanied by the municipal policies of the particular country. This research paper also claims that every personal connecting factor can be applied globally in all similar circumstances as there are not many effectual deviations in their application. Thus, the outcomes of this study will help to identify the specific nature of domicile to cooperate with judgment making in the international legal system.
