A new design for digital data communication provides improved transmission rate for a specified bandwidth during the transmission of binary data. The design involves psk, a 16-ary phase-shift keying, with the production of a phase shift of multiples of 22.5 degrees corresponding to every four-bit block. Thus, psk provides four times the bit rate without elevating the baud rate.

Research on optical fibers being developed by Corning Inc. at the University of Rochester suggests that increasing the distance between amplifiers will lead to appreciable Gbit s transmission rates.
