Abstract: We consider that electromagnetic pulses produced in the jets of this innermost part of the accretion disk accelerate charged particles (protons, ions, electrons) to very high energies including energies above $10^{20}$ eV for the case of protons and nucleus and $10^{12-15}$ eV for electrons by electromagnetic wave-particle interaction. The episodic eruptive accretion in the disk by the magneto-rotational instability gives rise to the strong Alfvenic pulses, which acts as the driver of the collective accelerating pondermotive force. This pondermotive force drives the wakes. The accelerated hadrons (protons and nuclei) are released to the intergalactic space to be ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The high-energy electrons, on the other hand, emit photons in the collisions of electromagnetic perturbances to produce various non-thermal emissions (radio, IR, visible, UV, and gamma-rays) of active galactic nuclei. Applying the theory to M82 X-1, we find that it can explain the northern hot spot of ultra high energy cosmic rays above $6\times 10^{19}$ eV. Abstract: The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. 53. Effects of equilibrium radial electric field on ion temperature gradient instability in the scrape-off layer of a field-reversed configuration

Abstract: Linear and nonlinear effects of the equilibrium radial electric field on the ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of a field-reversed configuration have been studied using gyrokinetic particle simulations for a single toroidal mode. Linear simulations with adiabatic electrons find that the E × B flow shear reduces the growth rate and causes a radial tilting of the mode structure on the toroidal plane. Nonlinear simulations find that the E × B flow shear significantly decreases ITG saturation amplitude and ion heat transport in the SOL by reducing both turbulence intensity and eddy size. The turbulence intensity is determined by fluid eddy rotation, which is the dominant saturation mechanism for the SOL ITG instability with a single toroidal mode number. On the other hand, parallel wave-particle decorrelation is the dominant mechanism for the SOL ITG turbulent transport. A random walk model using the guiding center radial excursion as the characteristic length scale and the eddy turnover time as the characteristic time scale fits very well to the scaling of ion heat conductivity with the E × B flow shear.

Abstract: The implementation of the suggestion of thin film compression (TFC) allows the newest class of high power, ultrafast laser pulses (typically 20[Formula: see text]fs at near-infrared wavelengths) to be compressed to the limit of a single-cycle laser pulse (2[Formula: see text]fs). Its simplicity and high efficiency, as well as its accessibility to a single-cycle laser pulse, introduce a new regime of laser–plasma interaction that enhances laser acceleration. Single-cycle laser acceleration of ions is a far more efficient and coherent process than the known laser-ion acceleration mechanisms. The TFC-derived single-cycle optical pulse is capable of inducing a single-cycle X-ray laser pulse (with a far shorter pulse length and thus an extremely high intensity) through relativistic compression. The application of such an X-ray pulse leads to the novel regime of laser wakefield acceleration of electrons in the X-ray regime, yielding a prospect of “TeV on a chip.” This possibility of single-cycle X-ray pulses heralds zeptosecond and EW lasers (and zeptoscience). The additional invention of the coherent amplification network (CAN) fiber laser pushes the frontier of high repetition, high efficiency lasers, which are the hallmark of needed applications such as laser-driven LWFA colliders and other, societal applications. CAN addresses the crucial aspect of intense lasers that have traditionally lacked the above properties.

Abstract: Energetic beams excite semi-repetitive modes ('staircase mode') in the field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma. We explore several neural network architectures to detect, and in some cases predict, this type of mode onset. We weigh the performance of these architectures and find that recurrent neural networks (RNNs), specifically long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, outperform all other models we examine. LSTMs can predict the onset of staircase with a lead window of 0.2 ms, which has implications for plasma longevity and is a promising direction for similar analysis in FRC devices in the future.

Abstract: A quasi-neutral blended drift-Lorentz particle model of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) has been developed and implemented in the particle-in-cell code named ANC. A field-aligned mesh and corresponding mesh operations are constructed for solving self-consistent electric fields in FRC geometry. Particle dynamics are described in cylindrical coordinates to allow for cross-separatrix simulation coupling the core and scrape-off layer regions of the FRC. This new model is successfully verified against analytically derived dispersion relations, and FRC turbulence is studied using the blended model for the first time.

Abstract: Field-reversed configuration (FRC) Amplification via Translation-Collisional Merging (FAT-CM) experiments have recently commenced to study physics phenomena of colliding and merged FRC plasma states. Two independently formed FRCs are translated into the confinement region of the FAT-CM device, collided near the mid-plane of the device with a relative speed of up to ∼400 km/s, and a final merged FRC plasma state is achieved. To measure internal magnetic field profiles of the translated and merged FRC plasmas as well as to understand its collisional-merging process, an internal magnetic probe array, developed by TAE Technologies, has been installed in the mid-plane of the FAT-CM device. Initial magnetic field measurements indicate that both the translated and the merged FRC plasma states exhibit a clear field-reversed structure, which is qualitatively in good agreement with 2D MHD simulation. It is found and verified that a sufficient mirror field in the confinement region is required for colliding FRCs to be fully merged into a single FRC plasma state.

This system is capable of measuring density fluctuations and perpendicular magnetic field fluctuations across a wide wavenumber range (2.5 ≤ kθρs ≤ 50), with typical resolution Δkθ/kθ ≤ 0.4-0.8. Four tunable frequencies (26 GHz ≤ f ≤ 60 GHz corresponding to plasma cut-off densities 0.8 × 1019 ≤ ne ≤ 4.4 × 1019 m−3) are launched via quasi-optical beam combiners/polarizers and an adjustable parabolic focusing mirror selecting the beam incidence angle. Abstract: Solid-state or crystal acceleration has for long been regarded as an attractive frontier in advanced particle acceleration. However, experimental investigations of solid-state acceleration mechanisms which offer $\rm TVm^{-1}$ acceleration gradients have been hampered by several technological constraints. The primary constraint has been the unavailability of attosecond particle or photon sources suitable for excitation of collective modes in bulk crystals. Secondly, there are significant difficulties with direct high-intensity irradiation of bulk solids, such as beam instabilities due to crystal imperfections and collisions etc. In this work, we model an experimentally practicable solid-state acceleration mechanism using collective electron oscillations in crystals that sustain propagating surface waves. These surface waves are driven in the wake of a submicron long particle beam in tube shaped nanostructured crystals with tube wall densities, $n_{\rm tube}\sim10^{22-24}\rm cm^{-3}$. Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations carried out under experimental constraints demonstrate the possibility of accessing average acceleration gradients of several $\rm TVm^{-1}$ using the solid-state tube wakefield acceleration regime. Furthermore, our modeling demonstrates the possibility that as the surface oscillations and resultantly the surface wave transitions into a nonlinear or "crunch-in" regime under $n_{\rm beam}/n_{\rm tube} \gtrsim 0.05$, not only does the average gradient increase but strong transverse focusing fields extend down to the tube axis. This work thus demonstrates the near-term experimental realizability of Solid-State Tube Wakefield Accelerator (SOTWA). Abstract: The emerging intense attosecond X-ray lasers can extend the Laser Wakefield Acceleration mechanism to higher plasma densities in which the acceleration gradients are greatly enhanced. Here we present simulation results of high quality electron acceleration driven by intense attosecond X-ray laser pulses in liquid methane. Ultrahigh brightness electron beams can be generated with 5-dimensional beam brightness over [Formula: see text]. The pulse duration of the electron bunch can be shorter than 20 as. Such unique electron sources can benefit research areas requiring crucial spatial and temporal resolutions.

Abstract: Experimentally accessible schemes of laser muon ([Formula: see text]) acceleration are introduced and modeled using a novel technique of controlled laser-driven post-processing of cascade showers (or pair plasmas). The proposed schemes use propagating structures in plasma, driven as wakefields of femtosecond-scale high-intensity laser, to capture particles of divergent cascade shower of: (a) hadronic type from proton-nucleon or photo-production reactions or, (b) electromagnetic type. Apart from the direct trapping and acceleration of particles of a raw shower in laser-driven plasma, a conditioning stage is proposed to selectively focus only one of the charge states. Not only is the high gradient that is sustained by laser-driven plasma structures well suited for rapid acceleration to extend the lifetime of short-lived muons but their inherent spatiotemporal scales also make possible production of unprecedented ultrashort, micron-scale muon beams. Compact laser muon acceleration schemes hold the promise to open up new avenues for applications.

Abstract: EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract: We present here designs for a staged implementation of an orbiting debris remediation system comprised of a super-wide field-of-view telescope (EUSO) and a novel high efficiency fibre-based laser system (CAN). Initial proof of concept stages will operate from the International Space Station (ISS) where the EUSO telescope has been designed for operation as a detector of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Equipped with 2.5 m optics and a field of view of ±30°, the EUSO telescope can also be utilised for the detection of high velocity fragmentation debris in orbit near the ISS. Further tracking, characterisation and remediation are to be performed by a CAN laser system operating in tandem with the EUSO telescope. For full scale versions of both instruments, the range of the detection/removal operation can be as large as 100 km. Utilising a step-by-step approach of increasing scale we present an analysis of implementation of: 1) Proof of principle demonstration of the detection by a mini-EUSO and operation of 100-fibre CAN laser technology as an ISS based prototype, 2) Technical demonstrator of debris-removal that consists of the EUSO telescope for the detection and a 10,000 fibre CAN laser for tracking and impulse delivery for debris re-entry, and 3) A free-flyer mission dedicated to debris remediation in a polar orbit with the altitude near 800 km. The integration of the two novel technologies aboard the ISS amounts to a novel approach as an immediate response to the serious space debris problem with the existing platform of ISS.

88. ICAN: A novel laser architecture for space debris removal

Abstract: The development of a fiber based laser architecture will enable novel applications in environments which have hitherto been impossible due to size, efficiency and power of traditional systems. Such a new architecture has been developed by the International Coherent Amplification Network (ICAN) project. Here we present an analysis of utilizing an ICAN laser for the purpose of tracking and de-orbiting hyper-velocity space debris. With an increasing number of new debris from collisions of active, derelict and new payloads in orbit, there is a growing danger of runaway debris impacts. Due to its compactness and efficiency, it is shown that space-based operation would be possible. For different design parameters such as fiber array size, it is shown that the kHz repetition rate and kW average power of ICAN would be sufficient to de-orbit small 1–10 cm debris within a single instance via laser ablation.

Abstract: Gamma-ray observations have revealed strong variability in blazar luminosities in the gamma-ray band over time scales as short as minutes. We show, for the first time, that the correlation of the spectrum with intensity is consistent with the behavior of the luminosity variation of blazar SEDs along a blazar sequence for low synchrotron peak blazars. We show that the observational signatures of variability with flux are consistent with wakefield acceleration of electrons initiated by instabilities in the blazar accretion disk. This mechanism reproduces the observed time variations as short as 100 seconds. The wakefield mechanism also predicts a reduction of the electron spectral index with increased gamma-ray luminosity, which could be detected in higher energy observations well above the inverse Compton peak., 10 pages, 6 figures. matches version to be published in MNRAS

Abstract: Reducing external joint moments during gait can lead to a reduction in dynamic joint load. There has yet to be a detailed investigation of gait strategies that can reduce external joint moments by decreasing the magnitude of ground reaction force (GRF) without reducing the walking speed. The objectives of this study were to verify whether it is possible to reduce external joint moments by decreasing the GRF magnitude without reducing the walking speed and to identify the alternative walking strategy involved in young healthy adults. This study included 14 young healthy subjects. They performed two types of walking: normal and impact reduction walking. For impact reduction walking, the subjects walked in a manner that reduced the impact upon foot contact. Cadence and step length were unified between the two conditions. The walking speed, peak value of vertical GRF, braking-accelerating force, loading rate, joint angle, and external joint moments of the two conditions were recorded and compared. No significant difference was noted in the walking speed. However, the first peak of vertical GRF, braking force, and loading rate during loading response were significantly reduced during impact reduction walking, and external joint moments in the hip, knee, and ankle joints were reduced. In contrast, the second peak of vertical GRF, hip extension angle, and external ankle dorsiflexion moment were significantly increased during terminal stance. Our data imply that the ankle joint function during the terminal stance is important in reducing the dynamic joint load in the contralateral leg during the loading response.

94. Instability-free ion acceleration by two laser pulses

Abstract: We demonstrate the instability-free ion acceleration regime by introducing laser control with two parallel circularly polarized laser pulses at an intensity of I = 6.8 × 1021 W/cm2, normally incident on a hydrogen foil. The special structure of the equivalent wave front of those two pulses, which contains Gaussian peaks in both sides and a concavity in the centre (2D), can suppress the transverse instabilities and hole boring effects to constrain a high density ion clump in the centre of the foil, leading to an acceleration over a long distance and gain above 1GeV/u for the ion bunches.

Abstract: Accreting blackholes such as miniquasars and active galactic nuclei can contribute to the highest energy components of intra- (∼1015 eV) galactic and extra-galactic components (∼1020 eV) of cosmic rays. Alfven wave pulses which are excited in the accretion disk around blackholes propagate in relativistic jets. Because of their highly non-linear nature of the waves, charged particles (protons, ions, and electrons) can be accelerated to high energies in relativistic jets in accreting blackhole systems, the central engine of miniquasars and active galactic nuclei.

97. Laser acceleration in novel media

Abstract: With newly available compact laser technology [1] we are capable of producing 100 PW-class laser pulses with a single-cycle duration on the femtosecond timescale. With this fs intense laser we can produce a coherent X-ray pulse that is also compressed, well into the hard X-ray regime (∼10 keV) and with a power up to as much as 10 Exawatts. We suggest utilizing these coherent X-rays to drive the acceleration of particles. Such X-rays are focusable far beyond the diffraction limit of the original laser wavelength and when injected into a crystal it forms a metallic-density electron plasma ideally suited for laser wakefield acceleration. If the X-ray field is limited by the Schwinger field at the focal size of ∼100 nm, the achievable energy is 1 PeV over 50 m. (If the X-rays are focused further, much higher energies beyond this are possible). These processes are not limited to only electron acceleration, and if ions are pre-accelerated to beyond GeV they are capable of being further accelerated using a LWFA scheme [2] to similar energies as electrons over the same distance-scales. Such high energy proton (and ion) beams can induce copious neutrons, which can also give rise to intense compact muon beams and neutrino beams that may be portable. High-energy gamma rays can also be efficiently emitted with a bril- liance many orders of magnitude above the brightest X-ray sources by this accelerating process, from both the betatron radiation as well as the dominant radiative-damping dynamics. With the exceptional conditions enabled by this technology we envision a whole scope of new physical phenomena, including: the possibility of laser self-focus in the vacuum, neutron manipulation by the beat of such lasers, zeptosecond spectroscopy of nuclei, etc. Further, we now introduce along with the idea of vacuum as a nonlinear medium, the Schwinger Fiber Accelerator. This is a self-organized vacuum fiber acceleration concept, in which the repeated process of self-focusing and defocusing for the X-ray pulse in vacuum forms a modulated fiber that guides the intense X-rays.

Abstract: An accreting supermassive blackhole, the central engine of active galactic nucleus (AGN), is capable of exciting extreme amplitude Alfven waves whose wavelength (wave packet) size is characterized by its clumpiness. The pondermotive force and wakefield are driven by these Alfven waves propagating in the AGN (blazar) jet and accelerate protons/nuclei to extreme energies beyond Zetta-electron volt (ZeV$=10^{21}$ eV). Such acceleration is prompt, localized, and does not suffer from the multiple scattering/bending enveloped in the Fermi acceleration that causes excessive synchrotron radiation loss beyond $10^{19}$ eV. The production rate of ZeV cosmic rays is found to be consistent with the observed gamma-ray luminosity function of blazars and their time variabilities., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, submitted to astrophysical journal (part 1)

Abstract: Designed as the first mission to explore the ultra-high energy universe from space, JEM-EUSO observes the Earth’s atmosphere at night to record the ultraviolet tracks generated by the extensive air showers. We present the expected geometrical aperture and annual exposure in the nadir and tilt modes for ultra-high energy cosmic rays observation as a function of the altitude of the International Space Station. Abstract: The transition from present high peak-power laser systems, encumbered by low efficiency and repetition rates, to systems of high average-power capable of real-world applications can be achieved by utilizing existing fiber based technology. A summary of the development of such a system by the ICAN consortium is provided here together with descriptions of exciting applications ranging from photon colliders to nuclear transmutation systems.
