Modern agriculture intensely selects aboveground plant structures, while often neglecting belowground features, and evolutionary tradeoffs between these traits are predicted to disrupt host control over microbiota. Moreover, drift, inbreeding, and relaxed selection for symbiosis in crops might degrade plant mechanisms that support beneficial microbes. We studied the impact of domestication on the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis between cowpea and root-nodulating Bradyrhizobium. We combined genome-wide analyses with a greenhouse inoculation study to investigate genomic diversity, heritability, and symbiosis trait variation among wild and early-domesticated cowpea genotypes. Cowpeas experienced modest decreases in genome-wide diversity during early domestication. Nonetheless, domesticated cowpeas responded efficiently to variation in symbiotic effectiveness, by forming more root nodules with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia and sanctioning nonfixing strains. Domesticated populations invested a larger proportion of host tissues into root nodules than wild cowpeas. Unlike soybean and wheat, cowpea showed no compelling evidence for degradation of symbiosis during domestication. Domesticated cowpeas experienced a less severe bottleneck than these crops and the low nutrient conditions in Africa where cowpea landraces were developed likely favored plant genotypes that gain substantial benefits from symbiosis. Breeders have largely neglected symbiosis traits, but artificial selection for improved plant responses to microbiota could increase plant performance and sustainability.

Introducción: La neumonía es una causa importante de morbimortalidad, en la edad pediátrica. Objetivo: Describir las características clínico y epidemiológicas de la neumonía de la comunidad, en los niños menores de cinco años. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio, descriptivo, prospectivo de corte transversal, en el Servicio de Pediatría del Hospital Materno Infantil ¨Piti Fajardo´, del municipio Güines, provincia Mayabeque. El universo fue de 213 niños ingresados por neumonía, se seleccionó a través de un muestreo no probabilístico intencional, por criterio, una muestra de 157 niños menores de cinco años. Las variables estudiadas fueron: edad, sexo, factores de riesgo, manifestaciones clínicas y radiológicas, complicaciones y terapia antimicrobiana. Resultados: La neumonía predominó en niños de uno a 12 meses de edad en el 51.3 %, del sexo masculino 61.3 %. Los factores de riesgo que sobresalieron la no lactancia materna exclusiva el 66.7 % y el 45.9 % eran fumadores pasivos. Las manifestaciones clínicas más frecuentes la tos 66.3 %, la fiebre 55.1 %, el 77.5 % presentaron alteraciones del murmullo vesicular y el 77.5 % lesiones lobares condensantes en la radiografía de tórax. El 12.7 % de los pacientes se complicaron con derrame pleural y al 77.9 % de las neumonías se le indicó penicilinas sintéticas o semisintéticas. Conclusiones: La neumonía predomina en los niños de uno a 12 meses de edad, del sexo masculino, la tos es el síntoma más frecuente y las alteraciones a la auscultación, con lesiones condensantes. El antibiótico más utilizado en las neumonías son las penicilinas.

Copper oxide (CuO) is an abundant and low-cost material, which is active as a photocatalyst under visible light due to its narrow band gap (1.3 eV). In the present work, CuO thin films at different Ni doping amounts (5, 10, and 30 % mol) were prepared using two different techniques: dip-coating and electrodeposition of Cu precursors over glass and PET substrates. X-Ray analysis results indicate the presence of Cu2O, CuO and Cuo phases in PET substrate films, while only CuO phase in Glass-substrate films. Glass substrate films presented a higher formic acid production performance reaching 50,000 μmol/g·h using 5% Ni doping on CuO. This higher activity was associated with a lower ratio between the adsorbed oxygen and the oxygen located in the crystal lattice, attributing this to the oxygen species adsorbed over the surface that could hinder the active sites of the material. Finally, PET substrate samples present a higher ratio between adsorbed oxygen and lattice oxygen, however, the Cu2O phase presents less affinity to adsorb CO2 molecules than CuO monoclinic phase reducing the photoactivity of the CO2 photoreduction. Majority charge carrier mobility of 4 cm2/Vs and 35 cm2/Vs for Cu2O and CuO respectively, with the charge carrier concentration of ∼1 × 1019 order was achieved switching the conducting type.

TiO2 thin films with mixtures of the anatase, rutile, and brookite phases were deposited on glass substrates via magnetron sputtering. Based on XRD and Raman results, the TiO2-0.47 and TiO2-3.47 films principally contained the brookite phase, while the TiO2-1.27 and TiO2-2.13 films were primarily anatase. The capacities of the TiO2 films to adsorb heavy metals were tested with Cr(VI) and Fe(III) solutions, and the maximum Cr(VI) and Fe(III) adsorption capacities were realized with the TiO2-0.47 film (334.5 mg/g) and TiO2-3.47 film (271.3 mg/g), respectively. SEM‒EDS results revealed the presence of Cr and Fe on the surfaces of the films, thus corroborating the ability of the TiO2 films to adsorb and remove heavy metals. They are strong candidates for use in wastewater treatment plants.

Mammalogy Notes, la revista científica de la Sociedad Colombiana de Mastozoología celebra su primera década de publicar y difundir investigación e información científica original sobre la historia natural, distribución, ecología y otros aspectos de la biología de los mamíferos de Colombia y el mundo. La revista ha servido de espacio de difusión principalmente para autores latinoamericanos, destacándose la contribución de colombianos, mexicanos y brasileños. Resaltamos el apoyo incondicional y el legado de los editores, autores e investigadores en general, quienes han sido clave en el fortalecimiento y consolidación de Mammalogy Notes. Así mismo, esperamos que la revista continúe por muchos años más y se siga consolidando como una fuente confiable de información sobre la diversidad e importancia de los mamíferos a nivel nacional e internacional.

Specialization in mutualisms is thought to be a major driver of diversification, but few studies have explored how novel specialization evolves, or its relation to the evolution of other niche axes. A fundamental question is whether generalist interactions evolve to become more specialized (i.e., oscillation hypothesis) or if partner switches evolve without any change in niche breadth (i.e., musical chairs hypothesis). We examined alternative models for the evolution of specialization by estimating the mutualistic, climatic, and edaphic niche breadths of sister plant species, combining phylogenetic, environmental, and experimental data on Acmispon strigosus and Acmispon wrangelianus genotypes across their overlapping ranges in California. We found that specialization along all three niche axes was asymmetric across species, such that the species with broader climatic and edaphic niches, Acmispon strigosus, was also able to gain benefit from and invest in associating with a broader set of microbial mutualists. Our data are consistent with the oscillation model of specialization, and a parallel narrowing of the edaphic, climatic, and mutualistic dimensions of the host species niche. Our findings provide novel evidence that the evolution of specialization in mutualism is accompanied by specialization in other niche dimensions.

Chagas Disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affecting 6–8 million people, mainly in Latin America. The medical treatment is based on two compounds, benznidazole and nifurtimox, with limited effectiveness and that produce severe side effects; consequently, there is an urgent need to develop new, safe, and effective drugs. Amphotericin B is the most potent antimycotic known to date. A21 is a derivative of this compound with the property of binding to ergosterol present in cell membranes of some organisms. In the search for a new therapeutic drug against T. cruzi, the objective of this work was to study the in vitro and in vivo effects of A21 derivative on T. cruzi. Our results show that the A21 increased the reactive oxygen species and reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential, affecting the morphology, metabolism, and cell membrane permeability of T. cruzi in vitro. Even more important was finding that in an in vivo murine model of infection, A21 in combination with benznidazole was able to reduce blood parasitemia, diminish the immune inflammatory infiltrate in skeletal muscle and rescue all the mice from death due to a virulent T. cruzi strain.

The present theoretical study aims to unify semiotics, cognitive linguistics and neuroscience in a new field of research called Agentive Cognitive Construction Grammar. The tenets of this theory are (i) the idea that linguistic constructions possess a triadic structure (iconic, indexical and symbolic) allowing speakers to reconstruct reality, and (ii) that these constructions arise from the interactions between signals from the inner body and the environment. In this framework, the influence of embodied cognition on language would therefore be the result of sensory input from the body (translated by the brain into concepts with traces of physical routines) and the need of speakers to reduce the influence of uncertainty during the construction of meaning.

Introduction The WHO 2030 Immunization Agenda (IA-2030) harmonizes immunization activity plans at community, national, regional and global levels. Additionally, medical societies play an important role. The Latin American Group of Experts on Infant Immunization, established in 2018, advises on the harmonization, update, and optimization of infant vaccination programs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In September 2021, 41 such experts from 13 LAC countries met to develop recommendations for increasing regional vaccination coverage to avoid the reemergence of vaccine-preventable diseases and/or the occurrence of outbreaks. Areas covered The following items were evaluated: (i) immunization challenges before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; (ii) the status of current immunization programs, particularly infant pertussis and polio vaccination; (iii) possible solutions for overcoming vaccination challenges and achieving regional vaccination coverage targets. Expert opinion/commentary Medical societies provide valuable recommendations to guide and update vaccination schedules. In the LAC region, possible strategies to achieve target vaccination rates include the use of combination vaccines, strengthening surveillance systems, improving school attendance, advancing vaccine education and confidence, striving for vaccination equity, widening operational capacity, creating strategic alliances, and strengthening the role of medical groups. It is hoped that these recommendations will be implemented in the LAC region.

The photoelectrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) onto bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I) was studied through physicochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements. The successful synthesis of the BiOX compounds was carried out through a solvothermal methodology and confirmed by XRD measurements. The morphology was analyzed by SEM; meanwhile, area and pore size were determined through BET area measurements. BiOI and BiOCl present a lower particle size (3.15 and 2.71 μm, respectively); however, the sponge-like morphology presented by BiOI results in an increase in the BET area, which can enhance the catalytic activity of this semiconductor. In addition, DRS measurements allowed us to determine bandgap values of 1.9, 2.4, and 3.6 eV for BiOI, BiOBr, and BiOCl, respectively. Such results predict better visible light harvesting for BiOI. Photoelectrochemical measurements indicated that BiOX shows p-type semiconductor behavior, being the holes the majority charge carriers, making BiOI the most active material to carry out photoelectrocatalytic CO2RR. In the second stage, three different composites, BiOI–Pd, BiOI–Cu, and BiOI–PdCu, (BiOI-M; M = Pd, Cu, PdCu), were fabricated to study the influence of active metal nanoparticles (NP's) in the BiOI CO2RR activity. XRD measurements confirmed the interaction between BiOI and the metallic NP's, the three composites overpassed by 20% the BET area of pristine BiOI. Photoelectrochemical measurements indicate that all BiOI-metal composites are suitable materials to perform CO2 reduction in neutral media efficiently; however, the BiOI–PdCu composites surpassed the faradaic current of BiOI–Pd and BiOI–Cu at 0.85 V vs. RHE (3.15, 2.06 and 2.15 mA cm−2, respectively). BiOI–PdCu presented photoactivity to carry out the CO2 reduction evolving formic acid and acetic acid as the main products under visible-light irradiation.

El crecimiento vehicular se ha visto incrementado, resultando cada vez más difícil el control de la seguridad y acceso a estacionamientos, Por tal motivo es necesario implementar un sistema de reconocimiento de identidad vehicular que permita digitalizar y optimizar este proceso. El software de aplicación diseñada en este trabajo se la realizó a través de la herramienta Visual Basic, que parte del acceso a una imagen que posea la información de la placa de un vehículo, permitiendo seleccionar el área de ubicación de la placa y a través de un preprocesamiento adecuarla óptimamente para su reconocimiento a través de la aplicación del OCR Reconocimiento Óptico de Caracteres, que se basa en la adquisición de valores propios de la imagen representada a través de una matriz específica correspondiente a cada carácter, logrando así establecer una relación y posteriormente su reconocimiento.

El aumento de los accesos no autorizados que presentan los sistemas informáticos es generado por programas maliciosos y en los últimos años en Ecuador, se han presentado violaciones a la seguridad de las redes corporativas, siendo el ciberataque más común ransomware, por lo que se plantea mejoras a las prácticas de seguridad aplicadas a las redes empleando algoritmos de inteligencia artificial para predecir y mitigar estas amenazas. En este estudio se propone diseñar un modelo de seguridad para detectar las amenazas en una red corporativa con el uso de algoritmos de machine learning. Para esto se realizó una revisión de la literatura en revistas científicas y libros para detallar los conceptos relacionados a la ciberseguridad en ambientes empresariales, además se utilizó la metodología CRISP-DM para la elaboración del modelo computacional, el cual consta de cinco fases, comprensión del negocio, comprensión de datos, preparación de datos, modelado y evaluación. Al finalizar el trabajo el modelo considera que el algoritmo de Random Forest presenta un mayor porcentaje en precisión comparado con otros algoritmos planteados en este estudio, logrando un valor de rendimiento del 99,74%. Por lo cual se concluye que es factible detectar anomalías de seguridad del tráfico de una red corporativa con el uso de algoritmos de machine learning.

En educación, el desarrollo profesional docente es un aspecto indispensable en la gestión y el desarrollo de los recursos humanos. En la formación docente universitaria se han realizado cambios para mejorar la calidad educativa acorde a la nueva era y la sociedad, aunque ello haya conllevado a la generación de mitos que, inadvertidamente, afectan el aspecto crítico y sustancial de la formación docente y de la propia universidad. La presente investigación realiza una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica para analizar los mitos y realidades de la formación docente universitaria reportados en la literatura científica. Se recuperaron inicialmente un total de 1165 artículos, de los cuales fueron incluidos 21. Como resultado fundamental, se identificaros diez mitos actuales en la formación docente, y se describieron los principales referentes teóricos que refutan cada uno de estos mitos. Los resultados obtenidos en varias investigaciones indican que la aceptación de algunos de los mitos analizados, disminuye a medida que aumenta el nivel de formación docente.

Objetivo. Presentar un procedimiento de bajo costo para la cría y mantenimiento de S. frugiperda en condiciones de laboratorio para obtener material biológico óptimo para fines de investigación. Materiales y métodos. Estos procedimientos se basan en el documento del Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo (CIMMYT) “Técnicas eficientes para la crianza masiva e infestación de insectos en la selección de plantas hospedantes para resistencia al gusano cogollero”, nuestra experiencia en la cría del gusano, y en la literatura publicada. Resultados. Se describen los procedimientos para la colecta en campo del pie de cría y las medidas de cuidado para la cría en cada fase del ciclo biológico del gusano cogollero S. frugiperda. En varios casos se ajustaron o mejoraron los métodos publicados, también se comentan varios problemas que se presentan en la cría y la manera de evitarlos; además, se incluye el procedimiento para regular la densidad de la población de la cría y las técnicas utilizadas para obtener larvas en tercer estadio, el cual normalmente se utiliza en los trabajos de investigación por ser la etapa óptima para el control de daños en los cultivos ocasionados por este insecto. Con los procedimientos presentados se puede obtener 85% de supervivencia a la etapa adulta. Conclusión. Se cumplió el objetivo.

The presented Mean-Shift Super Resolution (MSSR) algorithm can extend spatial resolution within a single microscopy image. Its applicability extends across a wide range of experimental and instrumental configurations and it is compatible with other super-resolution microscopy approaches.
