General relativity reproduces main current cosmological observations, assuming the validity of cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR) at all scales and epochs. However, CDDR is poorly tested in the redshift interval between the farthest observed Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) and that of the Cosmic Microwave background (CMB). We present a new idea of testing the validity of CDDR, through the multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars. Luminosity distances are derived from the relation between the UV and X-ray luminosities of quasars, while angular diameter distances are obtained from the compact structure in radio quasars. This will create a valuable opportunity where two different cosmological distances from the same kind of objects at high redshifts are compared. Our constraints are more stringent than other currently available results based on different observational data and show no evidence for the deviation from CDDR at $z\sim 3$. We rejuvenate well-aged quasi-2D binary colloidal glasses by thermal cycling, and systematically measure both the statistical responses and particle-level structural evolutions during rejuvenation. While the moduli and boson peak are continuously rejuvenated with increasing number of cycles, the mean square displacement (MSD) fluctuates significantly between different groups of thermal cycles. The decoupling between the thermodynamical and dynamical evolutions suggests different microscopic origins for different bulk properties of glasses. We find that a small fraction of structural rearrangements triggered by thermal cycling could alter the whole elastic continuum and lead to the significant thermodynamic rejuvenation, while localized defects could be activated and deactivated at the positions close to the rearrangements with significantly high mobility change and hence result in the fluctuated dynamics even with only about 10% of particles as fast regions. Our results offer a comprehensive picture for the microscopic mechanisms underlying bulk glass rejuvenation, which could be readily used to refine glass properties or to formulate further statistical theories in glassy systems., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

When randomly displacing the nodes of a crystalline and unstressed spring network, we find that the Possion's ratio decreases with the increase of structural disorder and even becomes negative. Employing our finding that longer springs tend to contribute more to the shear modulus but less to the bulk modulus, we are able to achieve negative Poisson's ratio with lower structural disorder by attributing each spring a length dependent stiffness. Even with perfect crystalline structure, the network can have negative Possion's ratio, if the stiffness of each spring is set by its virtual length after a virtual network distortion. We also reveal that the nonaffine contribution arising from the structural or spring constant disorder produced in some cooperative way by network distortion is essential to the emergence of negative Poisson's ratio., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Using video microscopy, we measure local spatial constraints in disordered binary colloidal samples, ranging from dilute fluids to jammed glasses, and probe their spatial and temporal correlations to local dynamics during the glass transition. We observe the emergence of significant correlations between constraints and local dynamics within the Lindemann criterion, which coincides with the onset of glassy dynamics in supercooled liquids. Rigid domains in fluids are identified based on local constraints, and demonstrate a percolation transition near glass transition, accompanied by the emergence of dynamical heterogeneities. Our results show that the spatial constraints instead of the geometry of amorphous structures is the key that connects the complex spatial-temporal correlations in disordered materials., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

By introducing four fundamental types of disorders into a two-dimensional triangular lattice separately, we determine the role of each type of disorder in the vibration of the resulting mass-spring networks. We are concerned mainly with the origin of the boson peak and the connection between the boson peak and the transverse Ioffe-Regel limit. For all types of disorders, we observe the emergence of the boson peak and Ioffe-Regel limits. With increasing disorder, the boson peak frequency $\omega_{BP}$, transverse Ioffe-Regel frequency $\omega_{IR}^T$, and longitudinal Ioffe-Regel frequency $\omega_{IR}^L$ all decrease. We find that there are two ways for the boson peak to form: developing from and coexisting with (but remaining independent of) the transverse van Hove singularity without and with local coordination number fluctuation. In the presence of a single type of disorder, $\omega_{IR}^T\ge \omega_{BP}$, and $\omega_{IR}^T\approx \omega_{BP}$ only when the disorder is sufficiently strong and causes spatial fluctuation of the local coordination number. Moreover, if there is no positional disorder, $\omega_{IR}^T\approx \omega_{IR}^L$. Therefore, the argument that the boson peak is equivalent to the transverse Ioffe-Regel limit is not general. Our results suggest that both local coordination number and positional disorder are necessary for the argument to hold, which is actually the case for most disordered solids such as marginally jammed solids and structural glasses. We further combine two types of disorders to cause disorder in both the local coordination number and lattice site position. The density of vibrational states of the resulting networks resembles that of marginally jammed solids well. We find that both continuous and discontinuous hexatic-liquid transitions can happen in the melting of two-dimensional solids of soft-core disks. For three typical model systems, Hertzian, harmonic, and Gaussian-core models, we observe the same scenarios. These systems exhibit reentrant crystallization (melting) with a maximum melting temperature $T_m$ happening at a crossover density $\rho_m$. The hexatic-liquid transition at a density smaller than $\rho_m$ is discontinuous. Liquid and hexatic phases coexist in a density interval, which becomes narrower with increasing temperature and tends to vanish approximately at $T_m$. Above $\rho_m$, the transition is continuous, in agreement with the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory. For these soft-core systems, the nature of the hexatic-liquid transition depends on density (pressure), with the melting at $\rho_m$ being a plausible transition point from discontinuous to continuous hexatic-liquid transition., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

We find an order-disorder transition from crystals to disordered crystals for static packings of frictionless spheres. While the geometric indicators are mostly blind to the transition, disordered crystals already exhibit properties apart from crystals. The transition approaches the close packing of hard spheres, giving rise to the singularity of the close packing point. We evidence that both the transition and properties of disordered crystals are jointly determined by the structural orders and density. Near the transition, the elastic moduli and coordination number of disordered crystals show particular pressure dependence distinct from both crystals and jammed solids., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

By minimizing a thermodynamic-like potential, we unbiasedly sample the potential energy landscape of soft and frictionless spheres under constant shear stress. We obtain zero-temperature jammed states under desired shear stresses and investigate their mechanical properties as a function of the shear stress. As a comparison, we also obtain jammed states from the quasistatic-shear sampling in which the shear stress is not well-controlled. Although the yield stresses determined by both samplings show the same power-law scaling with the compression from point $J$, i.e.~the jamming transition point at zero temperature and shear stress, for finite size systems, the quasistatic-shear sampling leads to a lower yield stress and a higher critical volume fraction of point $J$. The shear modulus of jammed solids decreases when increasing the shear stress. However, the shear modulus does not decay to zero at yielding. This discontinuous change of the shear modulus implies the discontinuous nature of the unjamming transition under nonzero shear stress, which is further verified by the observation of a discontinuous jump of the pressure from jammed solids to shear flows. The pressure jump decreases upon decompression and approaches zero at the critical-like point $J$, in analogy with well-known phase transitions under external field. The analysis of force networks in jammed solids reveals that the force distribution is more sensitive to the increase of the shear stress near point $J$. The force network anisotropy increases with the shear stress. We construct a new order parameter from the normal modes of vibration, based on the consideration of energy equipartition, to quantify the structural heterogeneity in disordered solids. The order parameter exhibits strong spatial correlations with low-temperature single particle dynamics and local structural entropy. To characterize the role of particles with the most defective local structures identified by the order parameter, we pin them and study how properties of disordered solids respond to the pinning. It turns out that these particles are responsible to the quasilocalized low-frequency vibration, instability, softening, and nonaffinity of disordered solids., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
