The inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy technique is employed to explain the mechanisms associated with the reassignment of the vibrational spectra of benzimidazole. The results demonstrate the presence of two new bands in the out-of-plane modes in the system.

The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of some ammonium halides and ammonium nitrate are analyzed in terms of the internal vibrations of the NH+4 ion convoluted with multiphonon lattice modes up to the eighth term. Due to the low mass of this ion, most of the intensity of the internal-mode region of the INS spectra is in the ‘‘phonon wings,’’ differences between the salts in this spectral region being mainly due to differences in their lattice-mode spectra. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments are combined with infrared and Raman data to obtain a uniquely defined description of the intramolecular vibrations of three oligomers of polythiophene. Through refinement of ab initio force fields, the three vibrational spectra of each oligomer are simulated with remarkable accuracy. Two different basis sets of atomic orbitals are used: the first, is 6-31G* and is used to optimize the geometries and calculate the relevant force fields of α-2T and α-4T, the second is 3-21G* and is used for the same purpose for α-4T and α-6T. To improve agreement with the experiment, the force fields are scaled. In this way, one set of scaling parameters is generated for the 6-31G* basis and another for the 3-21G* basis. The parameters are common to both molecules calculated with either basis sets and are believed to be transferable to higher isomers. The fitting procedure is applied in steps: first, the calculated vibrational frequencies are assigned on the basis of the experimental infrared and Raman activity, then a fitting of the Inelastic Neutron Scattering profile is performed, finally, the infrared and Raman spectra are calculated with the new normal modes and the ab initio derivatives of the dipole moment and the polarizability. The procedure is iterated until the three spectra of each oligomer are satisfactorily reproduced. For α-4T, two scaled force fields are obtained—one for each basis set—and are shown to yield very similar normal modes. It is important to emphasize that not only the vibrational frequencies but also the spectral intensities are well reproduced by the simulations. Implicitly, this means that the dipole moment and the polarization tensor surfaces calculated ab initio at the potential energy surface minimum are of good quality. Inelastic incoherent neutron scattering (IINS) cross sections have been measured for the recovered high-pressure phases of ice, ices II, V, VI, and IX (H2O) and ices II and IX (D2O) in the energy range from 2 to 150 meV at 20 K using the TFXA (time-focused crystal analyzer) neutron spectrometer on the ISIS pulsed neutron source at the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory. The excellent resolution of the TFXA (less than 2%) covers the whole range of translational and librational modes for the ices investigated and enables us to identify the fine structures in their spectra. Hence a direct comparison between the amplitude-weighted phonon density of states derived from the experimental spectrum and from a lattice dynamic calculation is possible [E. Whalley and J. E. Bertie, J. Chem. Phys. 46, 1271 (1967); J. E. Bertie and E. Whalley, ibid. 40, 1646 (1964)]. The spectra from these polymorphic ices show many new features in the translational region, which are not visible using infared and Raman techniques. In the librational band region, the general features vary remarkably between phases. Thus, for instance, ice II, in which the protons are ordered, shows more structure in this region and has a sharper low-energy cutoff than do the other phases examined. The most significant observation is that the low-energy cutoff is characteristic of the phase. Relative to ice Ih, there is a shift of 4.3 meV for ice IX, of 8.8 meV for ice II, 8.6 meV for ice V, and 12.2 meV for ice VI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the anisotropy of the proton momentum distribution in potassium hydrogen carbonate, KHCO3. Using the deep inelastic neutron scattering technique, the mean proton momenta along, and across, the O–H–O bond have been determined. While the momentum across the bond corresponds to a proton in a harmonic potential, that along the bond shows this potential is consistent with a previously proposed double well shape. The inelastic incoherent neutron scattering spectrum of chromous acid, at 77 K, is presented. It is dominated by the intense bending mode at 1254 cm-1 with some modes at lower frequencies showing indications of dispersion. The antisymmetric stretch νas(OHS) {|1>-|2>} was assigned to a broad band centered at ∼2050 cm-1, significantly displaced for the IR assignment (1650 cm-1). The breadth of the band is due to the dispersion, and kinematic coupling, that is anticipated for this compound. These new data allows us to fit chromous acid more clearly into the general trend of hydrogen bonded compounds. Chromous acid compares very well in its overall INS spectrum with the isomorphous sodium bifluoride, except that the kinematic coupling between νas(OHO) and the symmetric stretch does not occur in this compound.
