Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron Emissions Tomography (PET) are devices allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the J-PET (Jagiellonian PET), will allow PALS in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the J-PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using PALS data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0., 4 figures, 8 pages

A novel PET detector consisting of strips of polymer scintillators is being developed by the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) collaboration. The map of efficiency and the map of geometrical acceptance of the two-strip J-PET scanner are presented. The map of efficiency was determined using the Monte Carlo simulation software GEANT4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE), which is based on GEANT4. Both maps were compared using a method based on the χ2-test.

Positron emission tomographs (PET) do not measure an image directly. Instead, they measure at the boundary of the field-of-view (FOV) of PET tomograph a sinogram that consists of measurements of the sums of all the counts along the lines connecting two detectors. As there is a multitude of detectors build-in typical PET tomograph structure, there are many possible detector pairs that pertain to the measurement. The problem is how to turn this measurement into an image (this is called imaging). Decisive improvement in PET image quality was reached with the introduction of iterative reconstruction techniques. This stage was reached already twenty years ago (with the advent of new powerful computing processors). However, three dimensional (3D) imaging remains still a challenge. The purpose of the image reconstruction algorithm is to process this imperfect count data for a large number (many millions) of lines-of-responce (LOR) and millions of detected photons to produce an image showing the distribution of the labeled molecules in space., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The Jagiellonian-PET (J-PET) collaboration is developing a novel TOF-PET tomography scanner based mainly on the timing of signals instead of their amplitudes for the reconstruction of Lines-of-Response, therefore a very precise time resolution is one of the main challenges of the project. The novelty of the concept lies in employing long strips of plastic scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of the annihilation quanta. The diagnostic chamber consists of plastic scintillator strips readout by pairs of photomultipliers arranged axially around a cylindrical surface. To take advantage of the superior timing properties of plastic scintillators, the signals are sampled in the voltage domain with an accuracy of 20 ps by novel ultra-fast electronics, and the data are collected by the FPGA-based trigger-less data acquisition system. The hit-position and hittime are reconstructed by the dedicated reconstruction methods based on the compressing sensing theory and a library of synchronized model signals. The solutions are subject of sixteen patent applications. So far, a time-of-flight resolution of 125 ps (σ) was achieved for a double-strip prototype with 30 cm field-of-view (FOV). It is by more than a factor of two better than the TOF resolution achievable in current TOF-PET modalities and at the same time, the FOV of 30 cm long prototype is significantly larger with respect to typical commercial PET devices. The axial geometry gives unique possibilities of combining J-PET with Computed Tomography or with Magnetic Resonance Imaging, allowing to perform the simultaneous scan of the patient with both methods.

The commercial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners use inorganic crystal scintillators for the detection of gamma photons. The Jagiellonian-PET (J-PET) detector exhibits high time resolution due to use of fast plastic scintillators and dedicated electronics circuits. Since the time resolution of PET scanner is influenced by numerous factors, e.g. a type of photomultipliers attached to the scintillators, the optimal selection of components of the J-PET system requires detailed understanding of the method for calculation the time resolution. In this paper we show the idea of this method, based on statistical analysis of the observed signals on the photomultiplier's output. The method is tested using signals registered by means of the single detection module of the J-PET scanner built out from 30 cm long plastic scintillator strips. We investigate two main factors affecting the photon registration probability, photomultipliers quantum efficiency and photomultipliers transit time spread. We demonstrate that the quantum efficiency of photomultipliers represents the most important factor influencing overall performance of the J-PET scanner.

Recent tests of a single module of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomography system (J-PET) consisting of 30 cm long plastic scintillator strips have proven its applicability for the detection of annihilation quanta (0.511 MeV) with a coincidence resolving time (CRT) of 0.266 ns. The achieved resolution is almost by a factor of two better with respect to the current TOF-PET detectors and it can still be improved since, as it is shown in this article, the intrinsic limit of time resolution for the determination of time of the interaction of 0.511 MeV gamma quanta in plastic scintillators is much lower. As the major point of the article, a method allowing to record timestamps of several photons, at two ends of the scintillator strip, by means of matrix of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is introduced. As a result of simulations, conducted with the number of SiPM varying from 4 to 42, it is shown that the improvement of timing resolution saturates with the growing number of photomultipliers, and that the 2 x 5 configuration at two ends allowing to read twenty timestamps, constitutes an optimal solution. The conducted simulations accounted for the emission time distribution, photon transport and absorption inside the scintillator, as well as quantum efficiency and transit time spread of photosensors, and were checked based on the experimental results. Application of the 2 x 5 matrix of SiPM allows for achieving the coincidence resolving time in positron emission tomography of $\approx$ 0.170 ns for 15 cm axial field-of-view (AFOV) and $\approx$ 0.365 ns for 100 cm AFOV. The results open perspectives for construction of a cost-effective TOF-PET scanner with significantly better TOF resolution and larger AFOV with respect to the current TOF-PET modalities., Comment: To be published in Phys. In this paper, we present a complete Data Acquisition System (DAQ) together with the readout mechanisms for the J-PET tomography scanner. In general detector readout chain is constructed out of Front-End Electronics (FEE), measurement devices like Time-to-Digital or Analog-to-Digital Converters (TDCs or ADCs), data collectors and storage. We have developed a system capable for maintaining continuous readout of digitized data without preliminary selection. Such operation mode results in up to 8 Gbps data stream, therefore it is required to introduce a dedicated module for online event building and feature extraction. The Central Controller Module, equipped with Xilinx Zynq SoC and 16 optical transceivers serves as such true real time computing facility. Our solution for the continuous data recording (trigger-less) is a novel approach in such detector systems and assures that most of the information is preserved on the storage for further, high-level processing. Various mesoporous materials were investigated to choose the best material for experiments requiring high yield of long-lived positronium. We found that the fraction of 3\gamma annihilation determined using \gamma-ray energy spectra and positron annihilation lifetime spectra (PAL) changed from 20% to 25%. The 3gamma fraction and o-Ps formation probability in the polymer XAD-4 is found to be the largest. Elemental analysis performed using scanning electron microscop (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscop EDS show high purity of the investigated materials., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

According to the model predictions, observation of toroidal objects is expected in collisions of heavy ion at low incident energies. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions which may indicate the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems is shown.

International audience; FAZIA is a multidetector specifically designed to optimize A and Z reaction product identification in heavy-ion collision experiments. This multidetector is modular and based on three-layer telescopes made of two silicon detectors followed by a thick (10 cm) CsI(Tl) scintillator read-out by a photodiode. Its electronics is fully digital. The goal to push at maximum identification capability while preserving excellent energy resolution, can be achieved by using pulse-shape analysis techniques and by making an intensive use of high-speed flash ADCs. This paper presents the front-end part of the electronics.

The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) was constructed as a prototype of the cost-effective scanner for the simultaneous metabolic imaging of the whole human body. Being optimized for the detection of photons from the electron-positron annihilation with high time- and high angular-resolution, it constitutes a multi-purpose detector providing new opportunities for studying the decays of positronium atoms. Positronium is the lightest purely leptonic object decaying into photons. As an atom bound by a central potential it is a parity eigenstate, and as an atom built out of an electron and an anti-electron it is an eigenstate of the charge conjugation operator. Therefore, the positronium is a unique laboratory to study discrete symmetries whose precision is limited in principle by the effects due to the weak interactions expected at the level of (~10$^{-14}$) and photon-photon interactions expected at the level of (~10$^{-9}$). The J-PET detector enables to perform tests of discrete symmetries in the leptonic sector via the determination of the expectation values of the discrete-symmetries-odd operators, which may be constructed from the spin of ortho-positronium atom and the momenta and polarization vectors of photons originating from its annihilation. Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a multi-purpose detector which will be used for search for discrete symmetries violations in the decays of positronium atoms and for investigations with positronium atoms in life-sciences and medical diagnostics. In this article we present three methods for determination of the beam profile of collimated annihilation gamma quanta. Precise monitoring of this profile is essential for time and energy calibration of the J-PET detector and for the determination of the library of model signals used in the hit-time and hit-position reconstruction. We have we have shown that usage of two lead bricks with dimensions of 5x10x20 cm^3 enables to form a beam of annihilation quanta with Gaussian profile characterized by 1 mm FWHM. Determination of this characteristic is essential for designing and construction the collimator system for the 24-module J-PET prototype. Simulations of the beam profile for different collimator dimensions were performed. This allowed us to choose optimal collimation system in terms of the beam profile parameters, dimensions and weight of the collimator taking into account the design of the 24 module J-PET detector., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The positively charged silver clusters (Ag n + ions) were generated in the gas phase by using laser desorption ionization. On the basis of collision induced dissociation MS/MS spectra of the clusters obtained, it has been found that small even clusters (ions Ag 4 + , Ag 6 + , Ag 8 + , Ag 10 + , Ag 12 + ) lose Ag 3 moiety (trimer evaporation). This unexpected result has not been observed in previous studies devoted to the gas phase fragmentation of silver clusters. Loss of an odd-electron fragment Ag 3 from odd-electron parent clusters Ag 4 + , Ag 6 + , Ag 8 + , Ag 10 + , Ag 12 + , results in the formation of even-electron daughter cluster that are relatively more stable than the parent ions.

It has been demonstrated that phenylcopper(I)-containing clusters are generated in the gas phase from bis(dibenzoylmethane) copper(II) (Cu(dbm)2) by laser desorption/ ionization (LDI) method. For example, the [Cu5dbm2(C6H5)2]+ ion can be considered as consisting of two Cudbm molecules, two CuC6H5 molecules and a Cu+ cation. The [Cu5(C6H5)4]+ ion can be considered as phenylcopper(I) cluster (consisting of four phenylcopper molecules) ionized by additional Cu+ cation. Results from MS/MS (tandem mass spectrometry) experiments have confirmed the presence of phenylcopper molecules in the analyzed clusters. Ease of preparation of dibenzoylmethane-metal complexes and straightforward method to obtain LDI mass spectra offer a wide range of possibilities to study similar organometallic clusters in the gas phase.

A positronium - a bound state of electron and positron - is an eigenstate of parity and charge conjugation operators which decays into photons. It is a unique laboratory to study discrete symmetries whose precision is limited, in principle, by the effects due to the weak interactions expected at the level of 10−14 and photon-photon interactions expected at the level of 10−9. The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a detector for medical imaging as well as for physics studies involving detection of electronpositron annihilation into photons. The physics case covers the areas of discrete symmetries studies and genuine multipartite entanglement. The J-PET detector has high angular and time resolution and allows for determination of spin of the positronium and the momenta and polarization vectors of annihilation quanta. In this article, we present the potential of the J-PET system for studies of discrete symmetries in decays of positronium atoms.

Biodegradation of a commercially available mixture of octylphenol ethoxylates (Triton X-100) under the condition of OECD 301E screening test was studied by using electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry. It was found that ethoxylate containing six ethoxylene units (OPEO 6 ) is more resistant to the biodegradation process than other ethoxylates (e.g. than OPEO 5 and OPEO 7 ). After 40 days of biodegradation process the signal of OPEO 6 was clearly seen, but signals of OPEO 5 and OPEO 7 were not detected. After 40 days, all OPEO n with n > 4 were converted into carboxylated derivatives. Carboxylated derivatives were observed in negative ion mode as OPEO n -CH 2 COO − ions. Biodegradation of OPEO 5 -CH 2 COOH (carboxylated derivative correspondent of OPEO 6 ) occurred slower than biodegradation of the others, as resulted from obtained ESI mass spectra.

Two poly(propylene glycol)s (PPGs): PPG 425 and PPG 725 were tested under the conditions of the OECD Screening Test with activated sludge as inoculum. Tested PPG were the sole source of organic carbon in the test. Quantitative determination of the biodegradation progress was performed by the HPLC with fluorescence detection after derivatisation of PPG with naphthyl isocyanate. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique was used for identification and semiquantitative determination of metabolites. Separation of PPG and metabolites from the water matrix was performed by liquid-liquid extraction with chloroform. It was found that the shorter PPG 425 is biodegraded significantly worse than the longer PPG 725 and that biodegradation occurs without shortening of the PPG chain for both PPG. PPG molecules are oxidised to ketones and/or aldehydes during the aerobic biodegradation process.

Results of Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) and microscopic studies on simple microorganisms: brewing yeasts are presented. Lifetime of ortho - positronium (o-Ps) were found to change from 2.4 to 2.9 ns (longer lived component) for lyophilised and aqueous yeasts, respectively. Also hygroscopicity of yeasts in time was examined, allowing to check how water - the main component of the cell - affects PALS parameters, thus lifetime of o-Ps were found to change from 1.2 to 1.4 ns (shorter lived component) for the dried yeasts. The time sufficient to hydrate the cells was found below 10 hours. In the presence of liquid water an indication of reorganization of yeast in the molecular scale was observed. Microscopic images of the lyophilised, dried and wet yeasts with best possible resolution were obtained using Inverted Microscopy (IM) and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) methods. As a result visible changes to the surface of the cell membrane were observed in ESEM images., Nukleonika (2015)

This paper describes three methods regarding the production of plastic scintillators. One method appears to be suitable for the manufacturing of plastic scintillator, revealing properties which fulfill the requirements of novel positron emission tomography scanners based on plastic scintillators. J-PET analysis framework is a flexible, lightweight, ROOT-based software package which provides the tools to develop reconstruction and calibration procedures for PET tomography. In this article we present the implementation of the full data-processing chain in the J-PET framework which is used for the data analysis of the J-PET tomography scanner. The Framework incorporates automated handling of PET setup parameters' database as well as high level tools for building data reconstruction procedures. We present a fast GPU implementation of the image reconstruction routine, for a novel two strip PET detector that relies solely on the time of flight measurements.

Novel Positron Emission Tomography system, based on plastic scintillators, is developed by the J-PET collaboration. In order to optimize geometrical configuration of built device, advanced computer simulations are performed. International audience; In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to the investigation of the isospin degree of freedom in nuclear reactions. Comparing systems involving partners with different N/Z, it has been possible to investigate the isospin transport process and its influence on the final products population. This can be then related to the symmetry energy term of the nuclear EOS. From the experimental point of view, this task requires detectors able to measure both charge and mass of the emitted products, in the widest possible range of energy and size of the fragments. With this objective, the FAZIA and GARFIELD+RCo apparatus have been used with success in some recent experiments.

A study of the identification properties and of the energy response of a Si-Si-CsI(Tl) $\Delta$ E-E telescope exploiting a partially depleted second Si stage has been performed. Five different bias voltages have been applied to the second stage of the telescope, one corresponding to full depletion, the others associated with a depleted layer ranging from 60% to 90% of the detector thickness. Fragment identification has been obtained using either the $\Delta$E-E technique or the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). Charge collection efficiency has been evaluated. The $\Delta$ E-E performance is not affected by incomplete depletion. Isotopic separation capability improves at lower bias voltages with respect to full depletion, though charge identification thresholds increase.

[M+CuCl+H]2+ ions were generated using electrospray ionization (ESI); where M is a molecule of 3,5-bis(2,2’-bipyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid or its methyl ester (1 and 2, respectively). The ions were subjected to CID-MS/MS analysis. It was found that their gas phase decomposition lead to the formation of rare di-cations [M]2+, namely [1]2+ and [2]2+ ions. The formation of [1]2+ ion from [3+H+CuCl]2+ ion in the second fragmentation, where 3 is ethyl ester of 3,5-bis(2,2-bipyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid, was also observed since in the first fragmentation step the loss of ethylene molecule from [3+H+CuCl]2+ ion took place. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that [M]2+ ions formation from respective metal complexes has been reported. It is also unusual that formation of [M]2+ ions is not accompanied by formation of [M]+∙ ions. Furthermore, as expected, theoretical calculation and electron ionization mass spectra show that 1 and 2 are not especially prone to form [M]2+ ions. Thus formation of [M]2+ ions under CID conditions is very surprising.

A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

The J-PET detector being developed at Jagiellonian University, is a Positron Emission Tomograph composed of the long strips of polymer scintillators. At the same time it is a detector system which will be used for studies of the decays of positronium atoms. The shape of photomultiplier signals depends on the hit-time and hit-position of the gamma quantum. In order to take advantage of this fact a dedicated sampling front-end electronics which enables to sample signals in voltage domain with the time precision of about 20 ps and novel reconstruction method based on the comparison of examined signal with the model signals stored in the library has been developed. As a measure of the similarity we use the Mahalanobis distance. The achievable position and time-resolution depends on number and values of the threshold levels at which the signal is sampled. In this paper we present prospects for using the J-PET detector to search for discrete symmetries violations in a purely leptonic system of the positronium atom. We discuss tests of CP and CPT symmetries by means of ortho-positronium decays into three photons. No zero expectation values for chosen correlations between ortho-positronium spin and momentum vectors of photons would imply the existence of physics phenomena beyond the Standard Model. Previous measurements resulted in violation amplitude parameters for CP and CPT symmetries consistent with zero, with an uncertainty of about 10-3. The J-PET detector allows to determine those values with better precision thanks to a unique time and angular esolution combined with a high geometrical acceptance. Ethoxylated fatty alcohols, C12E1, C12E2, C18E1 and C18E2, were studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (E is the ethoxylene unit –OCH2CH2–). For compounds containing two ethoxylene units, which form quite stable adducts with sodium cation, the abundances of [M + Na]+ ions were not affected by alkyl chain, so the hydrophobic effect was not observed. For the compounds containing one ethoxylene unit, forming rather unstable adducts with sodium, the hydrophobic effect was clearly seen since the [C18E1 + Na]+ ion was more abundant than the [C12E1 + Na]+ ion. Two ethoxylene units are not able to form stable adducts with potassium cations, therefore the hydrophobic effect was observed for the [C12E2 + K]+ and [C18E2 + Na]+ ions, the latter being more abundant than the former. For lithium cation adducts with C12E1 and C18E1, the hydrophobic effect was observed, but was less manifested than for sodium cations since lithium adducts are more stable than sodium ones. C18E1 and C18E2 gave more intense signals at higher cone voltage values than C12E1 and C12E2, respectively. However, this is not related to the hydrophobic effect but to the collisions being less effective for the former.

We review the main results obtained by the BRAHMS collaboration on the properties of hot and dense hadronic and partonic matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. A particular focus of this paper is to discuss to what extent the results collected so far by BRAHMS, and by the other three experiments at RHIC, can be taken as evidence for the formation of a state of deconfined partonic matter, the so called quark-gluon-plasma (QGP). We also discuss evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e. the proposed Color Glass Condensate., 32 pages, 18 figures

Four N -(2-pyridyl)aminomethyldiphoshonic acids have been synthesized and the formation of the complexes between them and alkali cations were studied by the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS). The ESI spectra have evidenced formation of various types of complexes of the acids and monovalent cations, directly related to the formation of respective mono- and disalts of the acids. The main fragmentation path of the acids and their complexes is realized by the elimination of H 2 O or H 3 PO 3 molecules. The structures of the acids and their complexes with monovalent cations have been calculated by the PM5 method. The structure and the stabilization role of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds for the complexes are discussed.

We present the results obtained by the BRAHMS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) for three colliding systems, namely: Au + Au , d + Au and p + p at [Formula: see text]. The main focus here is to give an overview of the main results on the reaction dynamics and on the properties of hot and high energy density matter produced in utra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. Measurement of particle production, particle spectra over a large rapidity interval as well as high pt measurements related to nuclear modification in Au + Au and d + Au collision are discussed. The observed number of charged particles produced per unit of rapidity at the central rapidity region indicates that a high energy density (> 5 GeV/fm3) system is created at the initial stage of the Au + Au reaction. From the particle spectra we deduced significant radial expansion (β ≈ 0.75) which is consistent with the large initial energy density. For Au + Au at η = 0 we observe the suppression of the high p T particles as compared to the elementary collisions, whereas for the d + Au reaction the Cronin type enhancement is observed. We also discuss to what extent these results can be taken as evidence for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). Finally, we present the nuclear modification effects in d + Au reaction as a function of rapidity and consider whether the observed suppression at forward rapidities constitutes sufficient evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e. the Color Glass Condensate (CGC).

We present a measurement of π − / π + , K − / K + and p ¯ / p from p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV over the rapidity range 0 y 3.4 . For p T 2.0 GeV / c we see no significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratios. All three ratios are independent of rapidity for y ≲ 1.5 and then steadily decline from y ∼ 1.5 to y ∼ 3 . The π − / π + ratio is below unity for y > 2.0 . The p ¯ / p ratio is very similar for p + p and 20% central Au + Au collisions at all rapidities. In the fragmentation region the three ratios seem to be independent of beam energy when viewed from the rest frame of one of the protons. Theoretical models based on quark–diquark breaking mechanisms overestimate the p ¯ / p ratio up to y ≲ 3 . Including additional mechanisms for baryon number transport such as baryon junctions leads to a better description of the data.

Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) allows examining structure of materials at nano and sub-nanometer level. This technique is based on the lifetime and production intensity of ortho-positronium atoms in free volumes of given structures. It is mostly used for studies of organic materials. However there exist also few results, e.g. by groups of Y. C. Jean and R. Pietrzak, showing that morphology of cells is correlated with the PALS parameters. Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a multi-purpose detector which will be used for investigations with positronium atoms in life-sciences as well as for medical diagnostics. Such prototype based on plastic scintillators and fully compatible with MRI is currently being developed at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. In this talk results of the first experiments conducted by the J-PET collaboration will be presented. We performed PALS studies of well known structures such as silica and of some model micro-organisms, e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae both with dry and aqueous samples allowing to determine the correlation between hygroscopicity of the cell and PALS parameters. As a result, we proved that PALS can be successfully used for studies of living organisms their dynamics and its relation to the cells morphology. This result opens perspective for simultaneous determination of early and advanced stages of carcinogenesis by observing changes in biomechanical parameters between normal and tumour cells and standard PET examination. J-PET detection system combined with PALS technique will be more accurate and affordable for cancer diagnostics. Disclosure Authors disclose any relationship that may bias the presentation.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes and their 1,2,4-triazolium salt precursors were analyzed by electrospray ionization (ESI) and liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry (LSIMS). It was found that under applied conditions the C5 carbene center is formed from [M+ClO 4 ] + ion, were M corresponds to the 1,2,4-triazolium dicationic system, by loss of HClO 4 molecule. Further decomposition of formed carbene ions, namely [M−H] + ion, consist in the breaking of triazolium ring and loss bulky substituents from N1 and N4 atoms through the hydrogen transfer to the carbene center. This is in contrast to the [M] 2+ carbene precursor ions for which only the loss of N1 substituent occurred as a simple heterolytic bond cleavage.

The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC was conceived to pursue the understanding of nuclear matter under extreme conditions by detailed measurements of charged hadrons over the widest possible range of rapidity and transverse momentum. The experiment consists of two spectrometers with complementary charged hadron detection capabilities as well as a series of global detectors for event characterization. A series of tracking detectors, time-of-flight arms and Cherenkov detectors enables momentum determination and particle identification over a wide range of rapidity and transverse momentum. Technical details and performance results are presented for the various detector subsystems. The performance of the entire system working together is shown to meet the goals of the experiment.

The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is the first PET built from plastic scintillators. J-PET prototype consists of 192 detection modules arranged axially in three layers forming a cylindrical diagnostic chamber with the inner diameter of 85 cm and the axial field-of-view of 50 cm. An axial arrangement of long strips of plastic scintillators, their small light attenuation, superior timing properties, and relative ease of the increase of the axial field-of-view opens promising perspectives for the cost effective construction of the whole-body PET scanner, as well as construction of MR and CT compatible PET inserts. Currently inorganic scintillator detectors are used in all commercial Time of Flight Positron Emission Tomograph (TOF-PET) devices. The J-PET collaboration investigates a possibility of construction of a PET scanner from plastic scintillators which would allow for single bed imaging of the whole human body. This paper describes a novel method of hit-position reconstruction based on sampled signals and an example of an application of the method for a single module with a 30 cm long plastic strip, read out on both ends by Hamamatsu R4998 photomultipliers. The sampling scheme to generate a vector with samples of a PET event waveform with respect to four user-defined amplitudes is introduced. The experimental setup provides irradiation of a chosen position in the plastic scintillator strip with an annihilation gamma quanta of energy 511 keV. The statistical test for a multivariate normal (MVN) distribution of measured vectors at a given position is developed, and it is shown that signals sampled at four thresholds in a voltage domain are approximately normally distributed variables. With the presented method of a vector analysis made out of waveform samples acquired with four thresholds, we obtain a spatial resolution of about 1 cm and a timing resolution of about 80 ps ( σ).

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Novel TOF-PET scanner solutions demand, apart from the state of the art detectors, software for fast processing of the gathered data, monitoring of the whole scanner and reconstruction of the PET image. In this article we present an analysis framework for the novel STRIP-PET scanner developed by the J-PET collaboration in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University. All of the present methods for calibration and monitoring of TOF-PET scanner detectors utilize radioactive isotopes such as e.g. $^{22}$Na or $^{68}$Ge, which are placed or rotate inside the scanner. In this article we describe a novel method based on the cosmic rays application to the PET calibration and monitoring methods. The concept allows to overcome many of the drawbacks of the present methods and it is well suited for newly developed TOF-PET scanners with a large longitudinal field of view. The method enables also monitoring of the quality of the scintillator materials and in general allows for the continuous quality assurance of the PET detector performance., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures
