BAAB Architecture and Buildings has completed the Inside-Out Bath in Kerhonkson, New York, which aims to provide a seamless and accessible space for aging residents. The bathroom features a central "totem" that consolidates the sink, medicine cabinet, shower, and toilet, freeing up space and creating a barrier-free environment. The design also incorporates lifestyle details from the old bathroom, such as a magazine rack and night-light, while iridescent tile and a clerestory window bring natural light into the previously dark space. The project was completed in December 2023 by BAAB Architecture and Buildings, with Feinberg Construction as the general contractor. [Extracted from the article]

In this paper, we estimated the methane emissions by the disposal of sanitary and domestic-use paper consumed throughout Brazil from 1901 to 2016. The apparent consumption of this type of paper from 1961 to 2016, calculated from the data of the FAOSTAT system, was used to estimate the amount of waste disposed of annually in three site categories: sanitary landfill, controlled dump, and open-air, uncontrolled dump. The 2006 IPCC Guide methodology was used to calculate CH4emissions and long-term carbon storage. Nine scenarios based upon the law that establishes the National Solid Waste Policy (NSWP) were examined, considering 100% waste disposal and treatment in landfills or incineration from 2014. The total emission was estimated at 1.967 MtCH4, corresponding to 55.080 MtCO2eq by GWP-AR5, and the stored carbon at 3.724 Mt, corresponding to 13.655 MtCO2eq. CH4emission increased beyond the population growth rate due to an increase in the per capita paper consumption in the country, from 0.02 kgCH4.year-1 in 1961 to 0.30 kg CH4.year-1 in 2016. The NSWP has not yet been accomplished, and the scenarios outlined indicate that, from the point of view of CH4 emissions, it would be more advantageous to carry out incineration instead of applying other waste treatment technologies.

SYNTHETIC fibers , *TOILET paper , *FIBERS , *POLYESTERS , *WOOD-pulp , *PRODUCT improvement - Abstract
Sanitary products (SPs) such as toilet paper and moist wipes are marketed as flushable products (FPs). SP manufacturers, wastewater authorities, and governmental agencies describe FPs in their own terms, and cause confusion about what is safe to flush with respect to sewer operations. To identify sewer-safe FPs, 11 toilet paper (TP) and 39 flushable wipe (FW) samples that were collected from around the world were examined to assess critical links between their fiber compositions, strength indicators, and disintegration performance. The findings illustrate that products that are made of primarily wood-pulp fibers have low strength, disintegrate rapidly, and are safe flushables. In contrast, products that contain strong and synthetic fibers (e.g. polyester) exhibit high strength, disintegrate slowly, and pose significant risk of accumulation in sewer systems. Suggestions are offered for product improvement and for long-term sustainability of FPs and wastewater infrastructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article from Real Simple provides five tips for easier and better vacuuming. The first tip suggests using a dryer sheet in the replacement bag of a canister vacuum to make everything smell better, but warns against putting a dryer sheet in a bagless vacuum. The second tip recommends using painter's tape to prevent scuff marks on walls when vacuuming. The third tip suggests placing a damp paper towel on top of the dirt and dust in a bagless vacuum before emptying it into the trash to minimize messy dust clouds. The fourth tip advises using an empty toilet paper roll to reach into tiny crevices that regular attachments can't reach. The final tip suggests using a stocking over the hose attachment to retrieve lost earring backings from hard-to-reach spots. [Extracted from the article]

Kimberly-Clark Corp., the company behind brands like Kleenex and Scott toilet paper, has revised its full-year organic sales forecast downward due to weaker-than-expected results. The company cited challenges from changes in retail inventory levels, with stores reducing stocking levels amid high interest rates and shipping costs. This adjustment led to a 3.5% decline in revenue in the third quarter, with organic sales growth at its slowest rate in over three years. Procter & Gamble Co., a competitor in the paper products market, also reported organic sales growth that narrowly missed projections in its latest quarter. [Extracted from the article]

Some US shoppers are buying large quantities of toilet paper due to concerns about potential disruptions caused by a port strike and increased demand in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. Charmin toilet paper is currently out of stock for delivery at many Costco stores across the country, and other brands and paper towels are also sold out in some locations. Costco and other retailers are working to replenish their supplies and do not anticipate any major supply challenges. This surge in demand for toilet paper is reminiscent of the early days of the pandemic when people hoarded it out of fear of running out. The port strike, which began on October 1, is led by the International Longshoremen's Association, a union representing workers in major Eastern US and Gulf Coast ports. Some other retailers, such as Kroger and Walmart, have implemented temporary purchase limits on certain products, including toilet paper and paper towels. While some shortages have been observed, companies like Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble have stated that their ability to supply paper products has not been significantly impacted by the strike. This article discusses the phenomenon of "shrinkflation" in the bathroom industry, specifically focusing on toilet paper. The size of a typical Charmin toilet roll has significantly decreased over the years, with the current rolls containing only 56 sheets compared to 170 sheets in 1992. Toilet paper is identified as one of the products that have faced the most downsizing. Manufacturers have attempted to mitigate consumer backlash by reducing quantities while using larger names for their products. This downsizing is attributed to fluctuating wood pulp prices, as toilet paper is made from eucalyptus hardwood and northern softwood. [Extracted from the article]

The high uncertainty around the COVID‐19 pandemic elicited an unprecedented level of panic buying during the early months. Using the framework of stress and coping, the current study conceptualized and tested a theoretical model that predicts individuals' panic buying in two countries. A survey of US (n = 311) and Korean consumers (n = 347) revealed that negative emotions (loneliness and anxiety) contributed to panic buying, yet two important coping resources, resilience and social support, were effective in protecting consumers from engaging in a maladaptive coping strategy. The hypothesis that collectivism (vs. individualism) would make consumers rely on social (vs. personal) coping resources was partially supported. The results highlight the unique circumstance of the global pandemic in which social support works as both a resource for healthy coping and a source to increase negative emotions, and call for future investigation of the complex role of social support in the context of stress and coping theory. The aim of this study is to examine the working of prospective mathematics teachers on a modeling problem for the real-life use of a formula taught in the analytical geometry course, within the framework of the dual modelling cycle (DMCF), and to compare their success in the questions given as theories and relations in real-life contexts. A case study was performed with six prospective mathematics teachers in Turkey. The data consisted of the solution papers of two activities, toilet paper tubes, the voice records, and classroom observations. In the dual modelling cycle framework (DMCF), participants resolved the results obtained from the working mathematically stages of the second activity by transferring them to the initial activity. Utilising the dual modelling cycle, prospective teachers could use similar and simpler activities to solve real life problems which they previously found difficult to solve. Participants were more successful in solving theoretical questions than the modelling activities. The dual modelling activities carried out in this study implies that prospective teachers can apply one of the theoretical equations they learned in field courses to real life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today, the toilet paper market offers product types with varying number of plies, providing better mechanical strength and liquid absorption. Several tissue paper perforation systems exist, and the best commonly applied is a top-cutting mechanism that includes an oblique blade, a combined oblique blade, or a simple spiral blade. The perforation efficiency must be high to have an easy sheet separation from the roll of the toilet paper, which does not always occur. Hence, consumer satisfaction can depend on the perforation performance. To study this, a laboratory perforation system was used to perforate different commercial toilet papers (in brands and number of plies) and evaluate their perforation efficiency. A finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the curve of the progression of perforation efficiency as a function of the cut distance. The main findings were a stabilization of the perforation efficiency from a cut distance of 6 mm and a 15% increase in the cut distance for the laboratory blade to match the industrial perforation efficiency. The FEM analysis confirmed the behavior of the evolution of perforation efficiency with the increase of the cut distance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bidet toilets (electric toilet seats with water spray) are increasing in popularity worldwide. However, the extent of reduction of microbial contamination of the hands with the use of bidet toilets after defecation is unclear. Microbe contamination of the hands with and without the use of bidet toilets after defecation was examined in 32 nursing students. Double gloves were worn on the dominant hand and four layers of toilet paper were used to wipe the buttocks after defecation, and microbe contamination of the second glove (outer glove) of the double gloves was examined. The volunteers were free to select the flow volume, wash time of the bidet, and the type of bidet. Without the use of a bidet toilet, the average value+standard deviation of the number of microbes attached to the gloves was 39,499.3+77,768.3 colony forming units (cfu)/glove; however, it was 4,146.9+11,427.7 cfu/glove when the bidet toilet was used. The number of microbes adhering to gloves was significantly reduced when a bidet toilet was used (p,0.00001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During 1982 the living standard in the county of Timiș (like in the whole Romania) went up in decreasing following both the accelerate process of industrialization and the international energetic crisis, and need to pay back the external falling due. Crops export in order to pay back the external debt led to a ever greater penury of food of prime necessity: bread, sugar, and oil, meat and processed meat, flour, eggs, and butter, milk, cheese, etc. Lack of industrial products or the necessary products for an elementary hygiene – soap, toilet paper, or tooth paste – came together with the ones above. The population in Timiș County had to face the ever frequent stoppages of energy, of warm water, and apartments warming, or long files at the petrol stations or stations for gas cylinders. Such a crisis generated deep dissatisfaction in the county, a population frame of mind the reports of the Timiș County Inspectorate of the Ministry of Inner Affairs registered down and those reports were submitted to the prime-secretary of the County Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. The small retributions the villagers working in cooperates were given (after months and months) emphasized such dissatisfactions, all together with the salaries diminishing for unseating the plans in the case of those who worked in industry where the technological process was stopped for energy stoppages or lack of raw material. The papers register so the tensions of population, their critical reaction against the economical policy promoted by the Romanian communist leaders, and the distrust of people in the communist regime and ever frequent comparisons between the situation in Romania and Poland, an image that realistically put in light the ever less living standard in Romania during the 80s of the past century. As middle to upper-class Americans panicked over the national shortage of toilet paper, for a moment they came close to understanding what it was like to be poor in the United States. In April 2020, we united as a nation as canned foods, flour, sugar, and cleaning supplies flew from grocery store shelves with no certainty of the quick restock to which many of us are accustomed. For the first time, many of us could no longer spontaneously stop by the grocery store to pick up an ingredient for the recipe we bookmarked over the weekend. Due to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders and fear of catching a deadly virus, we reevaluated what was truly necessary and limited purchase of fresh produce to opt for nonperishables that we could stock up on for the month. Although much of the past year has been unprecedented, the limited access to groceries and food items is not. A glaring 23.5 million people in the United States regularly do not have access to affordable, healthy food options because there is no nearby grocery store.1 Liquidity constraints also diminish lowincome people's reserves of what many agree to be basic necessities. Even when readily available, low-income households pay 5.5% more per roll of toilet paper than they would if they purchased in bulk and on sale like higher-income households.2 Poverty is expensive, and the COVID-19 pandemic forced indigent communities to incur a higher-than-usual food insecurity cost. The relied-upon resources that kept many people fed such as local food banks, pantries, and schools were either struggling to meet heightened demand or shut down.3 For many, public transportation is the only affordable means of getting to a grocery store. The enclosed, crowded space is inapposite to any Center for Disease Control (CDC) guideline issued regarding the pandemic, putting low-income individuals at higher risk of contracting the virus. Indigent communities are risking their lives for a basic necessity: food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19's impact on the social and economic picture around the globe has been like watching a train wreck taking place on "Main Street" in slow motion. Doomsday "preppers" and at least some of their prognostications and suggestions moved towards the mainstream, having greater acceptance than before. One of the more popular books on Amazon, covering the topic of canning and preserving foods, was on backorder for at least several weeks, and as of the time of this writing, it has been months since one could easily acquire canning supplies such as jar lids on retailers' shelves. There were shortages on major websites of sewing machines, elastic, and other materials--even those that are substitute goods such as coffee filters, when individuals and groups engaged in making their own masks. Panic buying also wiped out inventories of hand sanitizers, disinfecting aerosol sprays, bleach, toilet paper, and numerous other products that consumers felt they might need, including guns and ammunition. A vast majority of businesses have not fared well. Hospitality, tourism, and the restaurant industries have been hit hard, and there are also disparate impacts among certain demographic groups relative to small-business owners. Bad actors are also hard at work, launching scams. Many have essential items for resale on websites such as Craigslist and eBay. This research presents a systematic review of the impact of COVID-19 on small businesses. It further examines the phenomenon in a broader socioeconomic and cultural context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite this, Kimberly-Clark increased its outlook for adjusted earnings this year, citing productivity gains and automation as contributing factors. This article is a reflection by Kate "Sassy" Sassoon on her involvement in the worker cooperative movement. She shares that she has been a worker-owner of three different types of worker co-ops and expresses her hopes for the movement to empower workers and provide quality jobs. She believes that these hopes have been realized on a smaller scale, with organizations under 25 members growing and more start-ups creating worker empowered spaces. However, she acknowledges that there is still work to be done on a larger scale. Sassoon also emphasizes the importance of national and regional worker co-op organizations in sharing best practices and connecting groups. She encourages these organizations to continue their current work and stay grounded in the needs of worker co-ops and the movement as a whole. Additionally, Sassoon highlights the personal impact of working in a non-toxic and empowered environment and believes that worker co-ops contribute to a better democratic society.
