Abstract

This paper sets forth new methods to measure the physical dimensions of structures of rotating objects observed by a radar. Using a pure CW waveform, it is possible to dimension structures that are rotating in the Doppler dimension by exploiting micro-Doppler cyclic signal processing methods that allow for the replacement of absolute time with the relative periodicity of a rigid body rotating structure across a fixed axis. The formulaic breakdown is given to determine a rotating object's rotation rate, main body diameter, fin/stabilizer lengths, and the number of fins/scatterers on a rigid body with high precision that is not dependent on the range resolution of the radar. Examples of dimension determination using live data from a 155mm artillery round and a Terrier sounding rocket are provided and discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in athlete leadership behaviours based on one's athlete leader status. Intercollegiate athletes (N = 299) self-identified their leadership status (i.e., formal leader, informal leader, follower) and rated the frequency of their own leadership behaviours. Results revealed that formal athlete leaders engaged in Training and Instruction more often than informal athlete leaders; with informal athlete leaders reporting higher frequencies than followers. Further, formal and informal athlete leaders reported engaging in Social Support more often than followers. These findings provide preliminary evidence of a top-down approach to leadership among athletes. No differences were found for Democratic Behaviour and Positive Feedback, suggesting that athlete leadership also is distributed among teammates. Results highlight important practical implications for sport practitioners in regard to athlete leader development. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Abstract

Background Optimal treatment of prosthetic joint infection and chronic osteomyelitis consists of surgical removal of biofilm-embedded bacteria, followed by a 6–12 week course of antimicrobial therapy. However, when optimal surgery is not feasible, oral prolonged suppressive antibiotic therapy (PSAT) is recommended to prevent prosthesis loosening and/or relapse of infection. Since 2010, we have used infection salvage therapy using off-label subcutaneous (sc) injection of a β-lactam as PSAT for patients in whom oral PSAT is not possible. Methods A single-centre prospective cohort study (2010–18) reporting treatment modalities, efficacy and safety in all patients receiving sc PSAT. NCT03403608. Results The 10 included patients (median age 79 years) had polymicrobial (n = 5) or MDR bacterial (n = 4) prosthetic joint infection (knee, n = 4; hip, n = 3) or chronic osteomyelitis (n = 3). After initial intensive therapy, seven patients received ertapenem, three patients received ceftriaxone and one patient received ceftazidime by sc injection (one patient received 8 days of ceftriaxone before receiving ertapenem). In one patient, sc PSAT failed with recurrent signs of infection under treatment. In three patients, sc PSAT had to be discontinued due to side effects; in only one of these was the sc route implicated (skin necrosis following direct sc injection and not gravity infusion). Median treatment duration was 433 days. In six patients, sc PSAT was successful with favourable outcome at the time of writing. Interestingly, three patients with MDR bacterial carriage at baseline lost this under PSAT during follow-up. Conclusions As salvage therapy, sc PSAT delivered by gravity infusion is a safe and interesting alternative when an optimal surgical strategy is not feasible and no oral treatment is available.

Abstract

International audience; Background Daptomycin has been recognized as a therapeutic option for the treatment of bone and joint infection (BJI). Gene polymorphism of ABCB1, the gene encoding P-glycoprotein (P-gp), may influence daptomycin pharmacokinetics (PK). Objectives We aimed to examine population PK of daptomycin and its determinants, including genetic factors, in patients with BJI. Patients and methods We analysed data from patients who received daptomycin for BJI between 2012 and 2016 in our regional reference centre and who had measured daptomycin concentrations and P-gp genotyping. A population approach was used to analyse PK data. In covariate analysis, we examined the influence of three single nucleotide variations (SNVs) of ABCB1 (3435C\textgreaterT, 2677G\textgreaterT/A and 1236C\textgreaterT) and that of the corresponding haplotype on daptomycin PK parameters. Simulations performed with the final model examined the influence of covariates on the probability to achieve pharmacodynamic (PD) targets. Results Data from 81 patients were analysed. Daptomycin body CL (CLDAP) correlated with CLCR and was 23% greater in males than in females. Daptomycin central V (V1) was allometrically scaled to body weight and was 25% lower in patients with homozygous CGC ABCB1 haplotype than in patients with any other genotype. Simulations performed with the model showed that sex and P-gp haplotype may influence the PTA for high MIC values and that a dosage of 10mg/kg/24h would optimize efficacy. Conclusions Daptomycin dosages higher than currently recommended should be evaluated in patients with BJI. Gender and P-gp gene polymorphism should be further examined as determinants of dosage requirements.

Abstract

The interaction of glutamine aspartate (i, i + 4) with the H-bond results in the stabilization of the peptide helices. These type of interactions are prevalent in protein helices. When aspartate is charged, the Gibbs energy of the interaction is - 1.0 kcal/mol and when it is protonated the charge is - 0.4(sub 4) kcal/mol. The specific interaction of aspartate carboxylate group with the trans amide proton of glutamine is revealed by magnetic proton experiments. This interaction is observed when the glutamine is N-terminal to the aspartate and the spacing is (i, i + 4).

Abstract

BackgroundIn the United States, there has been a concerning rise in the prevalence of opioid use disorders (OUD) among transition-age (TA) adults, 18 to 25-years old, with a disproportionate impact on individuals and families covered by Medicaid. Of equal concern, the treatment system continues to underperform for many young people, emphasizing the need to address the treatment challenges faced by this vulnerable population at a pivotal juncture in their life course. Pharmacotherapy is the most effective treatment for OUD, yet notably, observational studies reveal gaps in the receipt of and retention in medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), resulting in poor outcomes for many TA adults in treatment. Few current studies on OUD treatment quality explicitly consider the influence of individual, organizational, and contextual factors, especially for young people whose social roles and institutional ties remain in flux.MethodsWe introduce a retrospective, longitudinal cohort design to study treatment quality practices and outcomes among approximately 65,000 TA adults entering treatment for OUD between 2012 and 2025 in New York. We propose to combine data from multiple sources, including Medicaid claims and encounter data and a state registry of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment episodes, to examine three aspects of OUD treatment quality: 1) MOUD use, including MOUD option (e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, or extended-release [XR] naltrexone); 2) adherence to pharmacotherapy and retention in treatment; and 3) adverse events (e.g., overdoses). Using rigorous analytical methods, we will provide insights into how variation in treatment practices and outcomes are structured more broadly by multilevel processes related to communities, treatment programs, and characteristics of the patient, as well as their complex interplay.DiscussionOur findings will inform clinical decision making by patients and providers as well as public health responses to the rising number of young adults seeking treatment for OUD amidst the opioid and polysubstance overdose crisis in the U.S.

Abstract

The problem of understanding how a coherent, macroscopic BoseEinstein condensate (BEC) emerges from the cooling of a thermal Bose gas has attracted significant theoretical and experimental interest over several decades. The pioneering achievement of BEC in weakly interacting dilute atomic gases in 1995 was followed by a number of experimental studies examining the growth of the BEC number, as well as the development of its coherence. More recently, there has been interest in connecting such experiments to universal aspects of nonequilibrium phase transitions, in terms of both static and dynamical critical exponents. Here, the spontaneous formation of topological structures such as vortices and solitons in quenched cold-atom experiments has enabled the verification of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism predicting the density of topological defects in continuous phase transitions, first proposed in the context of the evolution of the early universe. This chapter reviews progress in the understanding of BEC formation and discusses open questions and future research directions in the dynamics of phase transitions in quantum gases.

Abstract

Translocations are an effectual management strategy for the reestablishment and reconnection of en- dangered populations and species. However, knowledge about the evolution and ecology of the populations and species of interest are critical so that informed decisions can be made about source populations and reestablishment areas. We employed 614 base pairs of the mitochondrial control region and 15 microsatellite loci to investigate genetic variation, contemporary connectivity, and inter- specific hybridization in the two remaining populations of the endangered Columbian white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus leucurus) through comparisons with the closest subspecies, O. v. ochrourus. Our data revealed the dubious taxonomic status of O. v. leucurus, and that O. virginianus in the Pacific Northwest originated from a single historic gene pool. Further the results identified that populations are currently genetically isolated and depauperate, and un- covered historic introgression with O. hemionus colum- bianus. These results suggest that translocations are a viable approach for reestablishing populations throughout the historic range to increase genetic diversity in the fragmented populations. Despite the taxonomic ambiguity, our study revealed the presence of unique genetic variation within each population which supports ongoing conserva- tion efforts.
