Large scale open cut coal mining operations have significant impacts to groundwater in surrounding areas in both active and post-mining phases. The prediction of water inflows into a surface mine excavation is one of the many components involved in mine design phase. Groundwater performance also reacts to mining activities from the operational, economic and safety implications perspective. Under NSW planning legislation, as part of the comprehensive risk assessment, a groundwater impact assessment has to be conducted for a coal project to predict and mitigate the impacts in consideration of the government requirements. In this paper, the groundwater assessment modelling of mine pits was discussed in predicting of groundwater inflows and reviewing analytical and numerical approaches. A methodology of groundwater impact assessment for an open cut mine in NSW with a three-dimensional groundwater flow model Modflow Surfact demonstrated its functions in simulating the project’s impacts on the groundwater regime. The key findings with mitigations are discussed and recommended in the paper to reduce impacts on groundwater and fulfil regulation requirements in NSW. The definition of “residual gas” can be found in different scenarios, such as the “fast” and “slow” desorption methods of measuring gas content and the sorption hysteresis test and gas management of coal mines, however, its meaning varies a lot in different contexts. The main aim of this paper is to discuss the existence of truly undesorbable residual gas in coal seam conditions and its impacts on sorption model and gas drainage efficiency. We believe the undesorbable residual gas does exist due to the observation of the extended slow desorption test and the sorption hysteresis test. The origin of undesorbable residual gas may be because of the inaccessible (closed or semi-closed) pores. Some gas molecules produced during coalification are stored in these inaccessible pores, since the coal is relatively intact in the coal seam condition, these gas molecules cannot escape during natural desorption and then create the undesorbable residual gas. Based on the existing adsorption models, we propose the improved desorption versions by taking into consideration the role of residual gas. By numerically simulating a gas drainage case, the gas contents after different drainage times are studied to understand the influence of residual gas content on gas drainage. The results indicate that the influence starts to be obvious even when the total gas content is at a high level, and the impact becomes more and more apparent with increasing drainage time. Our study shows that the existence of residual gas will impede the gas drainage and the total amount of recoverable coal seam methane may be less than expected. Coal exhibits different creep behaviours when filled with different amounts of gas. Creep tests of coal filled with 0 and 0.5 MPa gas were performed, and strain under different axial stress was compared. The three creep constitutive models which were analysed using the method fitting experimental data for determining which creep model can reflect the creep process of the test best. The results show that the deformation of coal filled with 0.5 MPa gas is more higher than that of coal filled with 0 MPa gas under the same axial stress. Gas plays a positive effect on the deformation of coal process and will accelerate creep process. And gas will reduce coal intensity and change coal creep properties. Compared with Nishihara Model and Extensional Nishihara Model, Burgers Model can reflect the three stages of creep process of coal filled with gas better. Water injection can compensate for pressure depletion of production. This paper firstly investigated into the equilibrium issue among water influx, water injection and production. Equilibrium principle was elaborated through deduction of equilibrium equation and presentation of equilibrium curves with an “equilibrium point”. Influences of artificial controllable factors (e.g. well ratio of injection to production and total well number) on equilibrium were particularly analyzed using field data. It was found that the influences were mainly reflected as the location move of equilibrium point with factor change. Then reservoir pressure maintenance level was especially introduced to reveal the variation law of liquid rate and oil rate with the rising of water cut. It was also found that, even if reservoir pressure kept constant, oil rate still inevitably declined. However, in the field, a stabilized oil rate was always pursued for development efficiency. Therefore, the equilibrium issue of stabilized oil production was studied deeply through probing into some effective measures to realize oil rate stability after the increase of water cut for the example reservoir. Successful example application indicated that the integrated approach was very practical and feasible, and hence could be used to the other similar reservoir.

Considered as a key component of human capital, mental health has drawn substantial scholarly attention for its effect on people's health status and economic outcome. When facing the challenge of stress, people's heterogeneity in cognitive ability and non-cognitive ability causes difference in patterns of coping, resulting in different manifestations in mental health. Previous researches have shown that cognitive and non-cognitive abilities have positively direct or indirect effects on mental health, but few studies research their role of coping with air pollution. We used the China Family Panel Survey (CFPS) and matched individual data with county or district level PM2.5 information from NASA. The study found that air pollution has negative effect on mental health with every increase of 1μg/m3 in PM2.5 deteriorating mental health by 0.038 standard deviation, which is the total effect of air pollution. However, the direct effect of air pollution on mental health will decrease to 0.028 in absolute value when considering mediating effects. By employing different approaches, we found positive mediating effects via cognitive ability and non-cognitive ability. Individuals with high cognitive and non-cognitive abilities are able to accurately diagnose problems and select the optimal coping strategies, thus restoring positive mental health.

This paper presents the results of an evaluation study of gas drainability in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield of the Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia, where the coal seam gas (CSG) contains a high proportion of carbon dioxide (CO2). Historically the gas drainability in some particular areas of this coal seam was found to be particularly poor, which posed a significant challenge to gas predrainage. As a result, a large volume of greenhouse gases were released to the atmosphere during mining of the coal seam. Furthermore, the high gas content associated with the CO2-rich composition also increased the risks of coal and gas outburst incidents, affecting the safety of mining. After systematic literature review of evaluation factors affecting gas drainability, this evaluation study comprehensively analyzed the main critical factors, including the geology of the area, the coal cleat system, coal microstructure, coal permeability, coal sorption capacity, gas content, and gas composition. Field geology analysis showed geological variations that affected the variations of the coal cleat system and CO2 content in the coal seam. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) tests showed the tight and less-porous features in hard-to-drain coal samples. The colliery gas database analysis was carried out to assess the impact of gas content and gas composition on the drainability of the coal seam. Laboratory tests showed that the coal seam had a permeability of less than 1 mD and also showed that the coal seam was highly undersaturated, especially with high CO2 content.

Draba oreades is one of the indicator species that narrowly distributed in alpine habitats. Here, the complete plastid genome (plastome) of D. oreades was determined by Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. It was 153,503 bp in length with a large single copy region of 82,683 bp, a small single copy region of 18,094 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions of 26,363 bp. A total of 129 genes were identified, including 84 protein-coding genes (78 PCG species), 37 tRNA genes (30 tRNA species), and 8 rRNA genes (4 rRNA species). The overall GC content of D. oreades plastome is 36.5%. Besides, we totally detected 116 perfect simple sequence repeats in D. oreades plastome. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on 27 complete plastome sequences revealed that D. oreades was closely related to its congeneric D. nemorosa.

Precise prediction of coal thickness is of the utmost importance in realizing intelligent and unmanned mining. As the channel wave is characterized by an easily recognizable waveform, a long propagation distance, and strong energy, it is widely used for coal thickness inversion. However, most traditional inversion methods are local in nature, and the inversion result is probably not optimal in the global scope. This paper introduces the GA-SIRT hybrid approach, which combines Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Simultaneous Iterative Reconstructive Techniques (SIRT) in order to deal with the above problem and to improve the accuracy of coal thickness inversion. The proposed model takes full advantage of the strong global search capability of GA and of the fast local convergence rate of the SIRT. Moreover, it inhibits the poor local search ability and the local optimal value effect of the GA and the SIRT respectively. The application of the GA-SIRT in the Guoerzhuang coal mine has significantly enhanced its accuracy, stability, and overall computational efficiency. Hence, the introduced novel hybrid model can precisely resolve and identify the coal thickness according to the channel wave. It can also be extended to other geophysical tomographic inversion problems towards the reduction of potential local optimal solutions.

O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), a unique DNA repair enzyme, can confer resistance to DNA anticancer alkylating agents that modify the O6-position of guanine. Thus, inhibition of MGMT activity in tumors has a great interest for cancer researchers because it can significantly improve the anticancer efficacy of such alkylating agents. In this study, we performed a quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and classification study based on a total of 134 base analogs related to their ED50 values (50% inhibitory concentration) against MGMT. Molecular information of all compounds were described by quantum chemical descriptors and Dragon descriptors. Genetic algorithm (GA) and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis were combined to develop QSAR models. Classification models were generated by seven machine-learning methods based on six types of molecular fingerprints. Performances of all developed models were assessed by internal and external validation techniques. The best QSAR model was obtained with Q2Loo = 0.83, R2 = 0.87, Q2ext = 0.67, and R2ext = 0.69 based on 84 compounds. The results from QSAR studies indicated topological charge indices, polarizability, ionization potential (IP), and number of primary aromatic amines are main contributors for MGMT inhibition of base analogs. For classification studies, the accuracies of 10-fold cross-validation ranged from 0.750 to 0.885 for top ten models. The range of accuracy for the external test set ranged from 0.800 to 0.880 except for PubChem-Tree model, suggesting a satisfactory predictive ability. Three models (Ext-SVM, Ext-Tree and Graph-RF) showed high and reliable predictive accuracy for both training and external test sets. In addition, several representative substructures for characterizing MGMT inhibitors were identified by information gain and substructure frequency analysis method. Our studies might be useful for further study to design and rapidly identify potential MGMT inhibitors.

Coal bursts are a serious dynamic hazard for underground coalmines, and they attract the extensive interest of studies from mining and geotechnical researchers worldwide. More recently, coal-burst incidents were reported in some Australian coalmines as a result of inadequate geological assessment of coal-burst hazards. The coal-burst process is closely associated with the accumulation of elastic energy and the rapid dissipation of kinetic energy. This paper introduces the essential geological conditions for energy accumulation, and the likely precursors for rapid energy dissipation leading to coal burst, which can be used by Australian coalmines to determine their coal-burst risk accordingly. Different energy forms and their transformations during the coal-burst process are introduced in detail in this paper. The dominant geological factors resulting in the accumulation of massive energy are analyzed, and the likely precursors associated with the instant release of elastic energy are discussed.

Mine ventilation has always been critical for underground mining operations to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with safety and health statutory requirements. To obtain a thorough understanding of the ventilation flow characteristics on a longwall face, innovative three dimensional (3D) models, incorporating key features of the longwall equipment and a zone of immediate goaf area, were developed. Mesh independent studies were conducted to determine the desirable mesh required for a mesh-independent solution. Then the model results were validated using field ventilation survey data. At both intersections of maingate/tailgate (MG/TG) and face where the flow boundary changes sharply, the occurrence of undesirable flow separation which causes additional energy loss was identified, as well as its extent of influence. The recirculation of airflow resulting from separation in the TG will lead to accumulation of high concentrations of mine gas, thus regular inspection or continuous monitoring of gas concentration in that area is highly recommended, especially when high gas emission is expected from the working seam. In addition, we also investigated the influence of shearer position and cutting sequence on longwall ventilation. Overall, the longwall models developed in this study together with the flow characteristics obtained will provide fundamental basis for the investigation of longwall gas and dust issues in the future.

Compared to traditional DNA markers, genome-scale datasets can provide mass information to effectively address historically difficult phylogenies. Primula is the largest genus in the family Primulaceae, with members distributed mainly throughout temperate and arctic areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The phylogenetic relationships among Primula taxa still maintain unresolved, mainly due to intra- and interspecific morphological variation, which was caused by frequent hybridization and introgression. In this study, we sequenced and assembled four complete plastid genomes (Primula handeliana, Primula woodwardii, Primula knuthiana, and Androsace laxa) by Illumina paired-end sequencing. A total of 10 Primula species (including 7 published plastid genomes) were analyzed to investigate the plastid genome sequence divergence and their inferences for the phylogeny of Primula. The 10 Primula plastid genomes were similar in terms of their gene content and order, GC content, and codon usage, but slightly different in the number of the repeat. Moderate sequence divergence was observed among Primula plastid genomes. Phylogenetic analysis strongly supported that Primula was monophyletic and more closely related to Androsace in the Primulaceae family. The phylogenetic relationships among the 10 Primula species showed that the placement of P. knuthiana–P. veris clade was uncertain in the phylogenetic tree. This study indicated that plastid genome data were highly effective to investigate the phylogeny.

DNA repair enzyme O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), which plays an important role in inducing drug resistance against alkylating agents that modify the O6 position of guanine in DNA, is an attractive target for anti-tumor chemotherapy. A series of MGMT inhibitors have been synthesized over the past decades to improve the chemotherapeutic effects of O6-alkylating agents. In the present study, we performed a three-dimensional quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QSAR) study on 97 guanine derivatives as MGMT inhibitors using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods. Three different alignment methods (ligand-based, DFT optimization-based and docking-based alignment) were employed to develop reliable 3D-QSAR models. Statistical parameters derived from the models using the above three alignment methods showed that the ligand-based CoMFA (Qcv2 = 0.672 and Rncv2 = 0.997) and CoMSIA (Qcv2 = 0.703 and Rncv2 = 0.946) models were better than the other two alignment methods-based CoMFA and CoMSIA models. The two ligand-based models were further confirmed by an external test-set validation and a Y-randomization examination. The ligand-based CoMFA model (Qext2 = 0.691, Rpred2 = 0.738 and slope k = 0.91) was observed with acceptable external test-set validation values rather than the CoMSIA model (Qext2 = 0.307, Rpred2 = 0.4 and slope k = 0.719). Docking studies were carried out to predict the binding modes of the inhibitors with MGMT. The results indicated that the obtained binding interactions were consistent with the 3D contour maps. Overall, the combined results of the 3D-QSAR and the docking obtained in this study provide an insight into the understanding of the interactions between guanine derivatives and MGMT protein, which will assist in designing novel MGMT inhibitors with desired activity.
