Abstract

The dispersion characteristics of superstructure fiber gratings written in multimode fibers and side-polished multimode fibers are investigated at different bending curvatures. The experimental results show that the group time delay in multimode superstructure fiber gratings can be tuned more easily than that of superstructure gratings in single-mode fiber. This method can provide tunable dispersion of superstructure fiber gratings by controlling the bending curvatures for application in dispersion compensators, fiber sensors, or suitable optical filters of optical communication systems. of America OCIS codes: 060.2310, 060.2370.

Abstract

The influence on the internal stress and optical properties of [Nb.sub.2][O.sub.5] thin films with ion-beam energy was investigated. [Nb.sub.2][O.sub.5] thin films were deposited on unheated glass substrates by means of ion-beam sputtering with different ion-beam voltage, [V.sub.b]. The refractive index, extinction coefficient, and surface roughness were found to depend on the ion-beam energy. The stresses in thin films were measured by the phase-shifting interferometry technique. The film stress was also found to be related to [V.sub.b], and a high compressive stress of -0.467 GPa was measured at [V.sub.b] = 850 V. The [Nb.sub.2][O.sub.5]-Si[O.sub.2] multilayer coatings had smaller average compressive stress as compared with single-layer [Nb.sub.2][O.sub.5] film. OCIS codes: 310.1620, 310.1860, 310.3840.

Abstract

Silicon nitrides are synthesized by ion-assisted deposition with only one coating material and a nitrogen-ion-beam source. All the Si[N.sub.x] films are amorphous and mechanically strong. A wide range of refractive indices from 3.43 to 1.72 at a wavelength of 1550 nm is obtained. Near-IR antireflection coating and a bandpass filter based on the multilayers of Si[N.sub.x] and Si are demonstrated.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel fiber-optic magnetic sensor based on a side-polished fiber Bragg grating coated with thin iron film. The Bragg wavelength shift of 0.08 nm was measured at the distance of 0.38 mm between fiber sensor and Nd-Fe-B magnet with remanent flux density of 1.115 T. We demonstrate the ability to measure magnetic fields using such a device. Index Terms--Fiber Bragg grating, magnetic sensor, side-polished fiber.
