Abstract

Annealing conditions leading to the crystallization of amorphous silicon nitride occurring upon nitriding of Fe–Si alloys have been found. A brief thermodynamic explanation for the occurrence of this unexpected amorphous-to-crystal transition is given. The crystalline precipitates were found to be α-Si3N4 and follow the orientation relationship given by ( 1 1 ¯ 0 ) α -Fe / / ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) α - Si 3 N 4 with [ 111 ] α -Fe / / [ 0001 ] α - Si 3 N 4 . This transition happens in precipitates with a constant Si3N4 composition. This structural change also leads to a morphological change from the initial cube-like shape to a hexagonal prism.

Abstract

SSCI-VIDE+EQUIPE-VIDE+TEP; International audience; Bulk nanoporous silicon prepared by top-down method form Li-ion batteries was investigated combining different conventional technique such as nitrogen physisorption and high resolution electron microscopy with electron tomography. It was found that the Si nanorods are forming porous aggregates with a half of the volume of the particle occupied by pores. The nanorods are preferentially oriented along the main axis of the aggregate. The porosity and the lack of compaction between the aggregates provide space for the Si expansion during the lithiation process. It was found that the Si nanorods mainly expose the {111} family plane as an external faces. The size distributions of the porous and solid phases in a granule were found to be similar. The pores represent 50% of the total volume of an aggregate. The shape orientation of the particles was quantified and it was found to exhibit a narrow distribution. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. Abstract

Silica is typically used as a sintering aid in the production of transparent YAG (Y3Al5O12) ceramics, allowing for the achievement of nearly pore-free microstructures and the lowering of sintering temperatures. However, it was also found to introduce undesired color centers in the sintered material [1] as well as segregate at grain boundaries leading to the formation of amorphous or crystalline secondary phases (Y2SiO5) [2], which decrease the optical properties and compromise the use of the material as a laser medium. Thus, while the addition of silicon (in the form of SiO2 or as tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS) is often required, it is desirable to obtain materials with low Si content and homogeneous distribution. This work studies the amount of Si and its distribution in YAG and Yb:YAG ceramic materials produced by reaction sintering of a mixture of oxide powders throughout the whole preparation process. Monitoring the Si content step by step provides important information about the reproducibility and consistency of the fabrication process, crucial for any further optimization. We have shown that Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) allows sensitive and accurate quantification of silicon in ceramics down to 60 ppm and our experimental LIBS setup was used to analyze the evolution of the silicon content in samples at various steps of the fabrication process [3]. The distribution of Si in sintered ceramics was studied with High Resolution TEM to detect any possible nano-precipitates, and EDX nano-probe chemical analysis to check for segregation at grain boundaries and evaluate Si concentration within the YAG grains. Abstract

Multimetallic nano-alloys display a structure and consequently physicochemical properties evolving in a reactive environment. Following and understanding this evolution is therefore crucial for future applications in gas sensing and heterogeneous catalysis. In view hereof, the structural evolution of oxidized Ag25In75 bimetallic nanoparticles under varying H2 partial pressures (PH2) and substrate temperatures (Ts) has been investigated in real-time through environmental transmission microscopy (E-TEM) while maintaining the atomic resolution. Small Ag25In75 bimetallic nanoparticles, produced by laser vaporization, are found (after air transfer) to contain an indium–oxide shell surrounding a silver-rich alloyed phase. For high PH2 and Ts, the direct reduction of the indium oxide shell, immediately followed by the melting or the diffusion onto the carbon substrate of the reduced indium atoms, is found to be the dominant mechanism. This reduction is concomitant with the growth of the core, indicating a partial diffusion of indium atoms from the shell towards the particle volume. The “surviving” particles therefore consist of a silver–indium alloy, very stable and remarkably resistant against oxidation contrary to native clusters. Interestingly, in the (PH2, Ts) space, the transition from “soft” (core–shell particles for low (PH2, Ts) values) to “strong” reduction conditions (silver-rich alloys for high (PH2, Ts) products) defines an intermediate domain where the preferred formation of Janus structures is detected. These results are discussed in terms of thermodynamic driving forces in relation to alloying and interface energies. This work shows the potential of high-resolution ETEM for unravelling the mechanisms of nanoparticle reorganization in a chemically reactive environment.

NATO-Advanced-Study-Institute Meeting on Nano- Structures for Optics and Photonics - Nano-Optics - Principles Enabling Basic Research and Applications, Erice, ITALY, JUL 04-19, 2015; International audience; The main goal of this research is the localization of Yb3+ and Er3+ rare earth ions and Co2+ transition metal ion as dopants in a glass ceramics composed of MgAl2O4 spinel nano-crystals of 10-20 nm size embedded in SiO2 glass. This is the first step of a compact self-Q-switched microchip laser. We conjugate, that is rather rare, both TEM-EDX and optical spectroscopy techniques. The use of TEM-EDX technique associated with both the elemental mapping of each dopant and the direct visualization of the heavier rare earth ions is unique way in luminescent materials which has led to the result that Er3+ and Yb3+ rare earth ions are preferentially located in the spinel nano-crystals. Regarding the Co2+ low concentration, this technique was not enough accurate and finally absorption spectroscopy technique have probed the main presence of Co2+ ions in the spinel nano-crystals. The use of site selective spectroscopy technique applied to Yb3+ structural probes allows to identify the 0-phonon broad line at 975 nm with both that of the disordered glass and that of the spinel inverted phases. A new Yb3+ radiationless center has been pointed out by the presence of a strong absorption line at 970 nm which has been assigned to the strongly perturbed area of the spinel nano-crystallite surface. This dopant characterization worthwhile to be shown in this School by applying both TEM-EDX and optical spectroscopy techniques as a pedagogical case in the research of rare earth ions and transition metal ions localization.

Abstract

Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) with different microstructures were elaborated. The isothermal tetragonal to monoclinic transformation was investigated at 134 {\deg}C in steam by X-ray diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and optical interferometry. The aging kinetics were analyzed in terms of nucleation and growth, using the Mehl-Avrami-Johnson (MAJ) formalism. Numerical simulation of the aging of zirconia surfaces was also conducted, and the results were used to better fit the aging kinetics. The simulation shows that the exponent of the MAJ laws is controlled not only by the nucleation and growth mechanisms, but also - and mainly - by their respective kinetic parameters. Measurements of nucleation and growth rates at the surface, at the beginning of aging, and the use of numerical simulation allow the accurate prediction of aging kinetics., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

cited By 103; International audience; Chemical weathering reactions of rocks at Earth's surface play a major role in the chemical cycle of elements, and represent one of the major abiotic sinks for atmospheric CO 2. Because natural chemical weathering reactions occur at different and more complex chemical conditions than laboratory-based weathering experiments, it has long been thought that the underlying fluid-mineral interaction mechanisms are different. In contrast to most previous studies that have relied on ion, electron, and X-ray beam techniques (characterized by μm to mm lateral spatial resolution) to obtain chemical depth profiles of altered mineral surfaces, we have used high resolution and energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM, EFTEM) to study mineral-fluid interfaces using TEM foils cut directly across the reaction boundaries. This allowed measurements to be made directly in cross section at nanometer to sub-nanometer-resolution. Our measurements of the surface chemistry and structure of a large suite of laboratory-altered and field-weathered silicate minerals indicate the general presence of surface layers composed of amorphous, hydrated silica. In each case, the boundary between the parent mineral and the corresponding silica layer is characterized by sharp, nanometer-scale chemical concentration jumps that are spatially coincident with a very sharp crystalline-amorphous interfacial boundary. TEM, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and aqueous chemistry data suggest that the surface layers are permeable to fluids. Taken together, our measurements are not in agreement with currently accepted models for chemical weathering, in particular the leached layer theory. Most importantly, our data provide critical evidence for a single mechanism based on interfacial dissolution-reprecipitation. This concept not only unifies weathering processes for the first time, but we also suggest that nanoscale-surface processes can have a potentially negative impact on CO 2 uptake associated with chemical weathering. The results in this study, when combined with recently published research on fluid-assisted mineral replacement reactions, supports the idea that dissolution-reprecipitation is a universal mechanism controlling fluid-mineral interactions (Putnis and Putnis, 2007). Based on this we propose the existence of a chemical weathering continuum based solely on the interfacial dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

International audience; The size distribution of second phase precipitates is frequently determined using conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM). However, other techniques, which present different advantages, can also be used for this purpose. In this paper, we focus on high angle annular dark field (HAADF) in TEM and scanning TEM (STEM) in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging modes. The mentioned techniques will be first described, then compared to more conventional ones for the measurement of carbides size distribution in two FeCV and FeCVNb model alloys. This comparative study shows that STEM in SEM, a technique much easier to undertake compared to TEM, is perfectly adapted for size distribution measurements of second phase particles, with sizes ranging between 5 and 200 nm in these systems.

Abstract

International audience; This paper describes a fast and one-step technique to grow single gold filaments at the apex of commercial conductive AFM tips. It is implemented with an atomic force microscope in air with a high relative humidity at room temperature and is based on a bias-assisted electro-reduction of gold ions directly at the tip apex. The technique requires only ad hoc substrates made of a mesoporous silica layer loaded with gold salt deposited on a conductive electrode. It leads to the growth, at the tip apex, of filaments whose length can be monitored and controlled during the growth between tens and hundreds of nanometers and whose radius of curvature can be as low as 3 nm. Made of polycrystalline gold nanostructures, the filaments are chemically and mechanically stable and conductive.

Abstract

MICROSCOPIE+ECI2D+MAO:TEP:JMI; International audience; In situ environmental STEM-(HA)ADF has been used to characterize a light alkane mild oxidation catalyst corresponding to a MoVTeO M1 phase. The results obtained show that there is almost no structure disordering under reaction conditions closed to ethane oxidative dehydrogenation catalytic reactions: i.e., 350 degrees C under 1 mbar of a 30/15/55 O-2/C2H6/N-2, gas mixture. They further demonstrate that {Te-O-x} chains present in the hexagonal channels of the structure participate in the redox process of the catalyst and constitute a preferential pathway for the reoxidation of the surface catalytic active sites. Upon reduction it is proposed that labile oxygens are removed from the chains, leading to a high content of Te4+-O3E and Te2+O2 species and a displacement of the tellurium position toward the atomic columns between the two hexagonal channels. This process is proposed to involve the reduction of tellurium only under the strongest reducing conditions. The study also shows a constant ending of the [001] zone by {Mo(Mo)(5)} structural units and the bulk catalytic sites generally proposed should not appear on the facets of this type of rod.

Abstract

International audience; A new method, which we name ion CHanneling ORientation Determination (iCHORD), is proposed to obtain orientation maps on polycrystals via ion channeling. The iChord method exploits the dependence between grain orientation and ion beam induced secondary electron image contrast. At each position of the region of interest, intensity profiles are obtained from a series of images acquired with different orientations with respect to the ion beam. The profiles are then compared to a database of theoretical profiles of known orientation. The Euler triplet associated to the most similar theoretical profile gives the orientation at that position. The proof-of-concept is obtained on a titanium nitride sample. The potentialities of iCHORD as an alternative to EBSD are then discussed.

Abstract

The target of this work is to investigate the effect of small additions of SiO2 or CaO on the sintering behavior and the microstructure of an ultrapure α-alumina compound. The sintering behavior has been investigated through extensive dilatometric study. SiO2 additions lead to a significant decrease in shrinkage rate during the intermediate stage of sintering whereas CaO is beneficent to densification. It has been found that during this stage which corresponds to the maximum of densification rate, grain boundaries diffusion controls densification through oxygen vacancies. The study of the densification behavior under different atmospheres help us to explain the role of the additives in agreement with electroneutrality equations. S.E.M. investigations confirm the well know correlation between doping and heterogeneous microstructures. After doping with SiO2 or CaO, abnormal grain growth appears at temperatures corresponding to the lowest eutectics given by Al2O3-SiO2 or Al2O3-CaO phase diagrams. H.R.T.E.M. observations show that below the critical temperatures for abnormal grain growth, additives enrichment is observed near grain boundaries (GBs). Above these temperatures, glassy phase for SiO2-doping and calciumhexaluminate (CA6) for CaO-doping are present at grain boundaries.

Abstract

Niobium is a strong carbide forming element which is often used in microalloyed steels to control the grain size during thermomechanical treatments and to provide strengthening through precipitation processes. A detailed microscopic investigation is one of the keys for understanding the first stages of the precipitation sequence, thus Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is required. The main difficulty of TEM studies is due to the nanometre scale dimensions of the particles, which makes their detection, structural and chemical characterization delicate. Model Fe- (Nb0.06%,C0.05%) and Fe-(Nb0.05%,C0.03%,N0.03%) ferritic alloys subjected to isothermal annealing treatments have been investigated. High Resolution TEM (HRTEM) and conventional TEM (CTEM) were used to characterise the morphology, nature and location of precipitates. Volume fraction measurements and a statistical approach to the determination of precipitate size histograms have been investigated using Energy Filtered TEM (EFTEM) and High Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) imaging. Chemical compositions were quantified by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS). The evolution of precipitate composition with time and temperature is compared with previous simulations obtained from new thermodynamic models based on equilibrium boundary conditions.

Abstract

The crystalline structure and fibrillar texture of nylon-6 fibers filled with nanosized particles were investigated using wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering. As-spun fibers filled with organic nanoparticles consisting of aromatic polyamide-like hyperbranched molecules with amine-terminating groups exhibited strong modification of both the molecular orientation and the crystalline structure compared with that of unfilled spun fibers. Montmorillonite-filled fibers mainly exhibited orientation improvement. The differences are discussed in terms of the rheological and nucleating effects during spinning. Drawing at 140 °C involves structural changes that resulted in the three kinds of fibers having a similar crystalline form and molecular orientation. In parallel, after significant strain-induced changes, the microfibrillar texture of the various fibers displayed subtle differences at the ultimate stage of drawing. The changes in the fibril long period and fibril radius as a function of draw ratio are discussed in terms of the two sequential deformation processes of microfibril stretching and microfibril slipping. The occurrence of interfibrillar strain-induced cavitation is discussed in relation to the nature of the interactions between the filler and the nylon-6 matrix. And, finally, the mechanical properties are discussed in relation to the filler-matrix interaction.

Abstract

This work reports an experimental electron-energy-loss spectroscopy study carried out on a model thermal Si–SiO2 interface. Valence-loss spectra and core-loss spectra (Si L2,3 and O K edges) were recorded across the interface in line-spectrum mode with a high spatial resolution in a field emission gun scanning transmission electron microscope. From the analysis of the line spectra and on the basis of high-resolution electron microscopy and high-angle annular dark-field experiments, it is concluded that the interface is not sharp but extends over about three atomic planes consisting of Si and O atoms arranged in a structure evolving between crystalline SiO and SiO2 before growing as an amorphous SiO2 layer. In addition, from the analysis of the valence-loss spectra in terms of energy-loss function or dielectric function e, we show that valence-electron-energy-loss spectroscopy could be a relevant alternative method for determining the electron properties, for example the bandgap, and the dielectric constan...

Abstract

The devitrification process of Zr46.75Ti8.25Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 metallic glass during annealing in the supercooled liquid region has been studied by conventional, high-resolution and analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two kinds of particle appear during devitrification: quasicrystals and crystalline precipitates. Nanoanalysis with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal that quasicrystals are Be free, while the crystallites have the ZrBe2 hexagonal structure. These experiments confirm the key role of Be during devitrification. They also indicate that quasicrystals can form in the system Zr–Ti–Cu–Ni (without Be), as further evidenced by direct synthesis and an in situ neutron diffraction investigation, according to the chemical composition deduced from the TEM analysis.

Abstract

Anisotropic effects in hexagonal aluminium nitride have been studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the N-K energy loss near edge structure (ELNES). Experimental data acquired with different collection angles and with a nearly parallel incident electron beam aligned along the c-axis have been compared to simulations based on ab initio calculations. The extraction of intrinsic parallel I|| (with momentum transfer q || c axis) and perpendicular I perpendicular (with momentum transfer q perpendicular c axis) components has been performed directly from the experimental spectra. This has been done according to their description as linear combinations of I|| and I perpendicular, with adequate weights deduced from a geometrical model of anisotropic behaviour.

Abstract

Palladium−tin nanocolloids have been analyzed with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The composition of individual colloids with a diameter of 2−5 nm has been deduced. It has been established that the colloids consist of a core of a PdxSn1-x alloy, with x ranging from 0.6 to 1. From the numerical comparison of experimental EELS line scans with reconstructed ones from a model colloid, it has been possible to evidence a slight Sn surface enrichment equivalent to a submonolayer of pure Sn on the surface of the colloid.

Abstract

Environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) equipped with an aberration corrector was used to get further insights into the mechanism of soot oxidation on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), an O 2− ionic conductor. In situ observations, with a resolution of around 1 nm, of a “tight” YSZ/real soot mixture were performed at 550 °C in the presence of a few mbar of oxygen (2 and 3 mbar). Preliminary experiments were conducted to validate that moderate electron beam illumination conditions do not control the soot combustion. Video sequences recorded at 550 °C clearly confirmed that bulk YSZ oxygen atoms are the active species for soot oxidation at the soot/YSZ interface as no oxidation takes place without contact. The number of soot/YSZ contact points and their evolution with time are the key parameters for soot oxidation. The contact length between the soot and the YSZ grains could be estimated to be around 20–40 nm only.

Abstract

β-Silicon carbide (β-SiC) nanowires (NWs) have been grown by thermal treatment of commercial silicon particles disposed in a graphite crucible under nitrogen atmosphere. By the same way, treatment under argon of a mixture of a boron nitride (BN) based powder and silicon particles led to h-BN coated β-SiC nanowires. The structures of both nanoobjects have been investigated by HRTEM, EDX and EELS.

Abstract

International audience; This study focuses on changes in the oxidation state of silver and in the crystalline phase of TiO2 occurring during the photochromic transitions of amorphous nanocomposite mesoporous Ag:TiO2 films exposed to ultraviolet and visible laser light. The chemical and phase transformations have been investigated by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results bring to the fore the presence of both silver nanoparticles in face-centered cubic and hexagonal crystalline phases during the photochromic transitions and a large amount of oxidized silver nanoparticles after visible light exposure, along with nucleation of some TiO2 crystals despite the very low intensity used.

Abstract

International audience; We show our approach in the structural and spectroscopic analysis of Yb3+-doped YAG nano-ceramics prepared by the low temperature-high pressure sintering technique (LTHP) by conjugation of both TEM-EDX and optical techniques. Pressure sintering dependences of absorption, emission and decays are analyzed and interpreted. The sample pressurized at 8GPa for sintering is characterized by the highest transparency and confirms the Y3Al5O12 garnet structure of the grains of ∼21 nm average size. Yb3+ ion distribution has been analyzed by both TEM-EDX evaluation in grains and grain boundaries and spectroscopy of Yb3+ pairs of small population from the cooperative luminescence phenomenon. EDX analysis at the TEM scale provides unambiguous results on a clear tendency of almost uniform Yb3+ distribution. An important new observation has been made at 4K and room temperature with the2F7/2 →2 F5/2 0-phonon absorption line at 975.7 nm in addition of the 0-phonon line of the YAG structure of grains at 968 nm similar to that of bulky YAG single crystals. We have discussed the origin of this new 0-phonon line relaxing only by non-radiative transitions and conclude that this line might be assigned to Yb3+ distorted sites on the grain surfaces. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2015.

Abstract

International audience; The fabrication of a single material being a competitive actuator as well as an electric current generator is no longer a challenge. This article presents novel nanocomposites based on a polyurethane (PU) matrix containing (0–5 wt.%) iron carbide-based nanofillers (Fe3C@C) fabricated by electrospinning. Such materials have both electrostrictive and magnetoelectric properties. The introduction of conductive fillers in PU, which is a good candidate for actuating applications, improved the electro-mechanical coupling due to an increase in the composite permittivity. A significant increase of the dielectric permittivity and an almost 7 fold gain for the deflection strain under 17 V/μm were measured on a diaphragm-type actuator for the PU-2.5 wt.% Fe3C@C nanocomposite. It was shown that a higher loading led to reduced actuation properties, probably due to the presence of Fe3C aggregates in the composite as shown by Focused Ion Beam characterization. The magnetoelectric (ME) properties of the nanocomposites still showed an increase for contents over 2.5 wt.%. The current generated by the nanocomposite, when subjected to a magnetic field, was comparable or higher than several ceramic materials and at least 100 times higher than polymer-based systems studied for their ME behavior.

Abstract

Creating the conditions so that matter naturally self-arranges at the nanoscale under a homogeneous excitation is an exciting challenge for the development of efficient and cost-effective processes. Sub-micrometer periodic templates can be formed spontaneously on materials by low-energy ion sputtering or with lasers. In the latter case, the formation of self-organized grating-like structures requires a high temperature rise and generally results from interactions with ultrashort laser pulses. Recently, a few studies have dealt with self-formed periodic patterns of metal nanoparticle assemblies, but they only reported changes in the spatial and size distributions of metal nanoparticles deposited on surfaces prior to interaction with femtosecond lasers. Here, we show that metal nanoparticles can grow in a selforganized manner within a waveguide illuminated from free-space by a continuous wave visible laser. We report the conditions that give rise to the generation of such 1D nanoparticle gratings and describe the parameters that influence the grating characteristics. We explain the mechanisms involved in the formation of such nanostructures on the basis of interference phenomena between the incident wave and guided modes.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to show the effects of small silica additions on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 3 mol% yttria-stabilised zirconia (3Y-TZP) ceramics. Experiments were conducted on different batches of 3Y-TZP (pure to 2.5 wt% silica-doped). Microstructures were characterised mainly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), but also by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Silica was found at triple junctions, but neither at grain boundaries nor in the lattice. Undoped zirconia ceramics exhibited faceted grains and significant internal stresses, while doped zirconias showed a much more rounded microstructure and a lower level of internal stresses. Low-temperature degradation (LTD) and slow crack growth (SCG) measurements were conducted on the different batches. The addition of silica strongly increases LTD resistance without affecting the SCG behaviour. The microstructural origins of the different behaviours are discussed.

Abstract

The thermoelectric power (TEP) of a 6061 Al alloy was measured during isothermal ageing performed between 200 and 500°C. A correlation between the change in TEP and the precipitation kinetics of various metastable phases was established using TEM and HRTEM observations and resistivity measurements. It was demonstrated that the TEP kinetics allow an assessment of the residual concentration of solute in the final equilibrium state. Furthermore, it was shown that the non-monotonous TEP changes reflect the microstructural transformations occurring in the alloy. In particular, the transition between two phases can be detected, owing to the change of the intrinsic effect or of the chemical composition of the precipitates.

Abstract

cited By 10; International audience; We show the approach in the structural and spectroscopic analysis of Yb3+-doped YAG nanoceramics prepared using the low temperature-high pressure sintering technique (LTHP) by conjugation of both TEM-EDX and optical techniques. Pressure sintering dependences of absorption, emission, and decays are analyzed and interpreted. The sample pressurized at 8 GPa for sintering is characterized by the highest transparency and confirms the Y3Al 5O12 garnet structure of the grains of ∼21 nm average size. Yb3+ ion distribution has been analyzed by both TEM-EDX evaluation in grains and grain boundaries and spectroscopy of Yb3+ pairs of small population from the co-operative luminescence phenomenon. EDX analysis at the TEM scale provides unambiguous results on a clear tendency of almost uniform Yb3+ distribution. An important new observation has been made at 4 K and room temperature with the 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 0-phonon absorption line located at 975.7 nm, in addition of the 0-phonon line of the YAG structure of grains at 968 nm similar to that of bulky YAG single crystals. We have discussed the origin of this new 0-phonon line relaxing only by nonradiative transitions and conclude that this line might be assigned to Yb3+ distorted sites on the grain surfaces. © 2014 American Chemical Society.
