Abstract

Ce document est le rapport final d'un Contrat d'Etude Recherche et Développement conclu entre l'IRISA et EDF sur la génération de plans de reprise de service pour les réseaux de distribution d'électricité. L'objet du CERD est d'étudier l'apport de travaux récents en planification sous incertitude (notamment ceux effectués à l'IRISA) et dans une moindre mesure en intégration des réparations au diagnostic basé sur les modèles. Le rapport présente, de façon synthétique puis détaillée, le contexte et les objectifs des recherches, les travaux étudiés en planification sous incertitude et en diagnostic et réparation, les expérimentations effectuées avec le planificateur PASCALE développé à l'IRISA, les apports du prototype construit dans le cadre du CERD, et les directions qui devraient être poursuivies par une étude complémentaire visant à améliorer le prototype de façon substantielle.

Abstract

The paper describes a case study that explores the idea of building a planner with a neat semantics of the plans it produces, by choosing some action formalism that is "ideal" for the planning application and building the planner accordingly. In general - and particularly so for the action formalism used in this study, which is quite expressive - this strategy is unlikely to yield fast and efficient planners if the formalism is used naively. Therefore, we adopt the idea that the planner approximates the theoretically ideal plans, where the approximation gets the closer, the more run time the planner is allowed. As the particular formalism underlying our study allows a significant degree of uncertainty to be modeled and copes with the ramification problem, we end up in a planner that is functionally comparable to modern anytime uncertainty planners, yet based on a neat formal semantics.

72. Combining Kalman Filtering and Markov Localization in Network-Like Environments.

Abstract

This paper presents a hybrid localization method designed for environments having the structure of a network (road networks, sewerage networks, underground mines, etc...). The method, which views localization as a problem of state estimation in a switching environment, combines the flexibility and robustness of Markov localization with the accuracy and efficiency of Kalman filtering. This is achieved by letting Markov localization handle the topological aspects of the problem, and Kalman filtering the metric aspects. The two techniques are closely coupled: the Markov model determines the Kalman filters to be initiated, and statistics computed by the Kalman filters are used to define the transition and observation probabilities in the Markov model. This approach has been applied to the problem of localizing a motor vehicle traveling on an urban road network, providing robust and accurate localization at low cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A decision process in which rewards depend on history rather than merely on the current state is called a decision process with non-Markovian rewards (NMRDP). In decision-theoretic planning, where many desirable behaviours are more naturally expressed as properties of execution sequences rather than as properties of states, NMRDPs form a more natural model than the commonly adopted fully Markovian decision process (MDP) model. While the more tractable solution methods developed for MDPs do not directly apply in the presence of non-Markovian rewards, a number of solution methods for NMRDPs have been proposed in the literature. These all exploit a compact specification of the non-Markovian reward function in temporal logic, to automatically translate the NMRDP into an equivalent MDP which is solved using efficient MDP solution methods. This paper presents NMRDPP (Non-Markovian Reward Decision Process Planner), a software platform for the development and experimentation of methods for decision-theoretic planning with non-Markovian rewards. The current version of NMRDPP implements, under a single interface, a family of methods based on existing as well as new approaches which we describe in detail. These include dynamic programming, heuristic search, and structured methods. Using NMRDPP, we compare the methods and identify certain problem features that affect their performance. NMRDPP's treatment of non-Markovian rewards is inspired by the treatment of domain-specific search control knowledge in the TLPlan planner, which it incorporates as a special case. In the First International Probabilistic Planning Competition, NMRDPP was able to compete and perform well in both the domain-independent and hand-coded tracks, using search control knowledge in the latter.
