52. Synthesis, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Activity of Cu-Doped MgO Nanoparticles on Degradation of Methyl Orange (MO)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to synthesize Cu-doped MgO nanoparticles and test the performance of photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). Mg(NO3)2, CuCl2, NaOH, and fresh Calotropis procera leaf extract were used as precursors. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized by using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis spectrometer to study the functional group, crystal structure, surface morphology, and absorption edge, respectively. The wide band above 3000 cm−1 from the FT-IR spectrum corresponds to the stretching vibrations of flavonoids and phenolic compounds of Calotropis procera leaf extract. Furthermore, the Mg-O bonding of undoped MgO and Cu-doped MgO NPs is represented by new peaks which appeared at 831 and 835 cm−1, respectively. The crystal size of undoped MgO and Cu-doped MgO nanoparticles is 13.04 nm and 12.08 nm, respectively. The SEM microstructure of pure MgO showed higher agglomeration than the Cu-doped MgO nanoparticles. The degradation efficiency of the Cu-doped MgO NPs was compared with that of the MgO NPs, and the photocatalytic activity of these NPs was evaluated using the photocatalytic degradation rates of MO dye. Cu-doped MgO NPs showed higher degradation efficiency than pure MgO NPs. The insertion of Cu in the MgO structure improved the photocatalytic efficiency of the MgO NPs under optimal conditions. Therefore, Cu-doped MgO exhibits high photocatalytic activity compared with undoped MgO nanoparticles under sunlight irradiation.

Abstract

Oxidative leaching is an inexpensive alternative to using chemical cyanide extraction methods for gold from low-grade gold sulfide. Oxidation of finely ground gold-bearing ore by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was evaluated in terms of cell density, pH, and leaching efficiency of Fe and Au in shake flask experiments. The compositional and elemental analyses of the beneficiated ore were analyzed using XRD and EDXRF spectroscopy. The ore’s primary constituents are gold (4.356 mg/L), silicon, iron, and sulfur (62.456, 15.441, and 7.912 wt%, respectively). XRD spectra, the main phases of the concentrated ore, showed that the major components of the ore were quartz, syn, silicon sulfide, pyrite, and polymetallic elements such as silderenrite, gismondine, siderenikite, hematite, and syn. The experimental results, with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria and blank, were evaluated. The pH of the blank remained nearly constant, and the pH of the bioleached was occasionally lowered. The A. ferrooxidans strain always grew better throughout the bioleaching process. For the A. ferrooxidans strain, the cell density of cells reached a maximum of 90.00 × 106 cells/mL after the 11th week and decreased to 87.00 × 106 cells/mL after the 12th week. The decrease in cell density may be due to the presence of polymetallic elements such as Al, Cr, Ti, and Ni, leading to reduced metal tolerance of the A. ferrooxidans strain. In the A. ferrooxidans leaching process, the maximum total iron and gold extraction reached 92.16% (14.23 mg/L) and 99.97% (4.355 ppm), respectively, after the 11th week, and leaching tends to decrease up to 14 weeks, which may be due to the formation of secondary minerals. More research will be performed to optimize the procedure and leaching kinetic, examine the impact of metal content, and take into account the potential for bioleaching process pollution in addition to the amount of gold recovered.

54. Oxidative Polymerization of Aniline on the Surface of Sisal Fibers (SFs) as Defluoridation Media for Groundwater

Abstract

Chemical modification of sisal fibers via in situ oxidative polymerization of aniline was conducted to examine their defluoridation capacity for fluoride from drinking water. The effects of polyaniline modifications have shown significant changes on the chemical moieties and defluoridation capacity of sisal fibers (SFs). FTIR peaks at 1440 cm−1 and 1560 cm−1 revealed the presence of benzoid and quinoid structures together with sisal fiber (SF). Thermal profiles confirmed the enhancement of thermal stability of polyaniline-modified sisal fibers (PAniMSFs). SEM microstructure also proved the surface roughening of SFs as a result of polyaniline modifications. Optimal batch adsorption parameters (pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration) were found to be 5, 60 min, 1 g, and 10 mg/L, respectively. Adsorption kinetics proved that the removal of fluoride follows pseudo-second-order model (K2 = 0.18 g. (mg·min)−1), while the adsorption isotherm well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich model with an experimental adsorption capacity of 2.49 mg/g. Hence, modifications and improvements are required to reduce the amount of fluoride to a permissible level and enhance the longevity and activity of adsorbent materials.

Abstract

Patient flow analysis can be studied from a clinical and or operational perspective using simulation. Traditional statistical methods such as stochastic distribution methods have been used to construct patient flow simulation submodels such as patient inflow, Length of Stay (LoS), Cost of Treatment (CoT) and Clinical Pathway (CP) models. However, patient inflow demonstrates seasonality, trend and variation over time. LoS, CoT and CP are significantly determined by attributes of patients and clinical and laboratory test results. For this reason, patient flow simulation models constructed using traditional statistical methods are criticized for ignoring heterogeneity and their contribution to personalized and value based healthcare. On the other hand, machine learning methods have proven to be efficient to study and predict admission rate, LoS, CoT, and CP. Abstract

The desire of using sustainable materials has reignited the interest in timber-based construction. Researchers and practitioners are developing novel timber-based structural solutions. Cross-laminated timber (CLT)-coupled wall is a recently proposed system for potential use in mid- and high-rise timber construction. The National Building Code of Canada, however, does not include this system and, consequently, the seismic force modification factors are not available. This study evaluated the ductility-related force modification factor ([R.sub.d]) using the FEMA P-695 procedure. Nine archetype buildings were designed considering different design parameters: building storey height, CLT wall configuration, and coupling ratios. Using 30 ground motion records (bi-directional), rigorously selected for seismicity of Vancouver, BC, Canada, incremental dynamic analyses were performed. Collapse margin ratios were calculated to assess the adequacy of the trial Rd factors. Using an over-strength factor of 1.5, [R.sub.d] = 4 is found to be acceptable for this system. Abstract

Healthcare systems are challenged to deliver high-quality and efficient care. Studying patient flow in a hospital is particularly fundamental as it demonstrates effectiveness and efficiency of a hospital. Since hospital is a collection of physically nearby services under one administration, its performance and outcome are shaped by the interaction of its discrete components. Coordination of processes at different levels of organizational structure of a hospital can be studied using network analysis. Hence, this article presents a data-driven static and temporal network of departments. Both networks are directed and weighted and constructed using seven years' (2010-2016) empirical data of 24902 Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) patients. The ties reflect an episode-based transfer of ACS patients from department to department in a hospital. The weight represents the number of patients transferred among departments. As a result, the underlying structure of a network of departments that deliver healthcare for ACS patients is described, the main departments and their role in the diagnosis and treatment process of ACS patients are identified, the role of departments over seven years is analyzed and communities of departments are discovered. The results of this study may help hospital administration to effectively organize and manage the coordination of departments based on their significance, strategic positioning and role in the diagnosis and treatment process which, in turn, nurtures value-based and precision healthcare., Comment: Preprint. Abstract

With the advent of several new Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) technologies, todays networking environment is dramatically altered and is experiencing a rapid transformation. One of the most important is Ethernet based C-RAN, in support of which many products such as optical Ethernet switches have recently appeared on the market. This paper presents the performance analysis of such switches with respect to Packet Loss Ratio (PLR), Latency and Packet Delay Variation (PDV). We employed the Simula based on Discrete Event Modelling on Simula (DEMOS), a context class for discrete event simulation to simulate a cut-through optical Ethernet switch under two types of traffics: High priority (HP) traffic and Low priority (LP) traffic. In this way, the paper evaluates the optical Ethernet switch performance quantitatively. The results obtained from the simulator showed that the high quality of service was reflected on HP traffic and the low quality of service in LP traffic. Hence, HP traffic can be used for transporting Radio over Ethernet (RoE) traffic while LP traffic can used for transporting time insensitive application. Abstract

Today, deployment of optical fiber has offered large transmission capacity which cannot be efficiently utilized by the electronic switches. Rather, Integrated Hybrid Optical Network (IHON) is a promising approach which combines both packet and circuit switching techniques. As a result, it achieves efficient utilization of the bulk capacity and guarantees absolute Quality of Service (QoS) by optimizing the advantages of the two switching schemes while diminishing their disadvantages. Transpacket has developed a Fusion node implementing IHON principles in Ethernet for the data plane. Hence, this paper investigates and evaluates IHON network for 5G access networks. The simulated results and numerical analysis confirm that the Packet Delay Variation (PDV), Delay and Packet Loss Ratio (PLR) of Guaranteed Service Transport. (GST) traffic in IHON network met the requirements of 5G mobile fronthaul using CPRI. The number of nodes in the network limits the maximum separation distance between Base Band Unit. (BBU) and Remote Radio Head (RRH), link length; for increasing the number of nodes, the link length decreases. In addition to this, we verified how the leftover capacity of fusion node can be used to carry the low priority packets and how the GST traffic can have deterministic characteristics on a single wavelength by delaying it with Fixed Delay Line (FDL). For example, for LSM 1GE=0.3 the added Statistical Multiplexing (SM) traffic increases the 10GE wavelength utilization up to 89% without any losses and with SM PLR=0.001 up to 92% utilization.

78. Childhood and adult tuberculosis in a rural hospital in Southeast Ethiopia: a ten-year retrospective study

Abstract

Abstract Background Many DOTS experiences in developing countries have been reported. However, experience in a rural hospital and information on the differences between children and adults are limited. We described the epidemiology and treatment outcome of adult and childhood tuberculosis (TB) cases, and identified risk factors associated with defaulting and dying during TB treatment in a rural hospital over a 10-year period (1998 to 2007). Methods Retrospective data collection using TB registers and treatment cards in a rural private mission hospital. Information was collected on number of cases, type of TB and treatment outcomes using standardised definitions. Results 2225 patients were registered, 46.3% of whom were children. A total of 646 patients had smear-positive pulmonary TB (PTB), [132 (20.4%) children]; 816 had smear-negative PTB [556 (68.2%) children], and 763 extra-PTB (EPTB) [341 (44.8%) children]. The percentage of treatment defaulters was higher in paediatric (13.9%) than in adult patients (9.3%) (p = 0.001). The default rate declined from 16.8% to 3.5%, and was independently positively associated with TB meningitis (AOR: 2.8; 95% CI: 1.2-6.6) and negatively associated with smear-positive PTB (AOR: 0.6; 95% CI: 0.4-0.8). The mortality rate was 5.3% and the greatest mortality was associated with adult TB (AOR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.1-2.5), TB meningitis (AOR: 3.6; 95% CI:1.2-10.9), and HIV infection (AOR: 4.3; 95% CI: 1.9-9.4). Decreased mortality was associated with TB lymphadenitis (AOR: 0.24; 95% CI: 0.11-0.57). Conclusion (1) The registration of TB cases can be useful to understand the epidemiology of TB in local health facilities. (2) The defaulter and mortality rate of childhood TB is different to that of adult TB. (3) The rate of defaulting from treatment has declined over time.
