The breeding statistics for 2021 of the DGHT-AG Lacertids show the successes in breeding lizards in terrariums. Although many members of the AG Lacertids keep and breed lizards, only a few participate in the internal breeding statistics. However, breeding successes are important to maintain lizard populations in terrariums and to demonstrate our expertise as contacts for terrarium keepers, scientists, and authorities. In total, at least 178 lizards were kept and 321 offspring were produced in 2021, with the common wall lizard, the Kurdish lizard, and the eastern emerald lizard having the most successful breeding. In the current study, the structural characteristics of the egg and larva of the pentastomid Raillietiella mottae (Almeida, Freire, & Lopes 2008), are described and compared with those of other pentastomids. The eggs and larvae were obtained from lizards Phyllopezus periosus (Rodrigues 1986) and Phyllopezus pollicaris (Spix 1825) which were collected in the environmental protection area of Cachoeira de Missão Velha, Ceará state, northeastern Brazil (7° 13' S; 39° 08' W). Following collection, the specimens were transported to the Laboratorio de Zoologia (LZ-URCA) and deposited in terrariums to obtain the feces, which were collected and analyzed for the presence of pentastomid eggs. The eggs found were typical of the genus Raillietiella, differing from those of other genera due to the lack of an outer fl exible membrane. The larva had two pairs of limbs, each with a pair of terminal hooks. The limbs were unsegmented, ventrally curved, and supported by conical muscle structures with visible segmentation. The tail was bifurcate, and each section had a terminal bristle. Information on egg and larval morphology can be useful in the identification of genera and species. We tested the ability in the ruin lizard (Podarcis siculus) to discriminate between odour of a predator (the whip snake Hierophis viridiflavus) and those from harmless sources. We analysed two lizard populations: one (PP) predated by snakes and another (PNP) where no snakes occur. We tested the rate of tongue flick directed to cotton-tips impregnated with odours, and the rate of tongue flick, the time spent in immobility, escaping and exploring the terrarium containing a diffuse odour. We used the smell of the snake as dangerous stimulus, water as blank control, and cologne as complex control. Both populations did not discriminate snake cue from complex odour in both the experiments. PP individuals were more active and prone to analysing and exploring the stimuli and the environment than PNP lizards. In PP, the higher interest towards cologne and snake scents could be triggered just by their complexity that requires more tongue flicks to be 'analysed', with no apparent adaptive anti-predatory value. Overall, we observed a total responsiveness and activity pattern higher in the PP respect to PNP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Millipedes are organisms of the edaphic fauna and have been used as bioindicators for the evaluation of pollutants in the environment, as they are in constant contact with the soil. This study used the millipede Rhinocricus padbergi as surrogate to evaluate the toxicity of two metallic-insecticides that has been developed for leaf-cutting ants management. Millipedes were exposed in terrariums containing different concentrations of the metallic-insecticides and, after periods of 21 and 90 days, three individuals from each terrarium were dissected in order to remove the midgut, the organ where absorption of nutrients and, consequently, toxic substances occurs. The toxic action of the metallic-insecticides was analyzed through qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of morphophysiological alterations and by quantitative analysis of the HSP70 stress protein. The results showed that the metallic-insecticides may increase HSP70 labeling, although not at all concentrations and periods of exposure. Histopathological alterations were not significant at any concentration, indicating that the cytoprotective action of HSP70 is able to prevent severe damage to the midgut. It is therefore suggested that the metallic-insecticides are not toxic to the species studied here as no toxicity was observed under the conditions tested. The attraction that reptiles exert on people cannot be explained too easily, but the fact that terrariums with various reptiles are increasingly present in our homes proves that the interest in these lives is certain, in the last decade being in great growth in our country. For this reason, the need for information on reptile needs, such as their multiplication, is of interest, not only to breeders, but especially to Romanian veterinarians, who do not yet benefit from an accumulated faculty base and, with the exception of Internet resources, a vast bibliographic base in Romanian language that can be called upon if needed. Cannibalism involves consuming all or part of another individual of the same species as food. Consuming the same species, or showing cannibalistic behaviour is common in reptiles, especially in snake species. The captured female Coronella austriaca of the Colubridae family was kept in captivity for two months in the terrarium. The female sample fed on one of the offsprings after ovoviviparous delivery. In the following observations it was determined that one of the juvenile individuals fed on another juvenile with similar size. Disinvasion of terrariums plays an important role in the preven􀆟on of parasi􀆟c diseases of rep􀆟les. Only it breaks one of the three links in the epizoo􀆟c chain in a given invasion. However, there has been li􀆩le or no informa􀆟on on the effec􀆟ve disinfesta􀆟on of terrariums. At the same 􀆟me, there are a number of recommenda􀆟ons for the use of certain chemicals and the use of classical disinvasive methods in terrariums. As a result of our research, disinvasion is quite effec􀆟ve in preven􀆟ng rep􀆟le helminthiasis. It should be noted that in the terrariums where careful disinfesta􀆟on was carried out, through 3 months of helminth eggs were not found in rep􀆟les. However, in those terrariums where disinvasion was not carried out but deworming by rep􀆟les was done already. At 3 months, the invasion intensity was 81.25% and the invasion intensity was 81.81 eggs in 1 g of feces. Before disinfec􀆟ng terrariums, it is advisable to remove, even destroy, all valuable and easily replaceable equipment. The inventory that has some value must be boiled. If the material and the size of the inventory allow, boil it or boil it. The terrariums should be gently boiled or treated with a vircon or sep􀆟c tank, followed by thorough washing of their residues and drying. The present paper presents some considerations on the hygiene conditions in four species of tarantulas, the most common ones in the arachophils (Acanthoscuria geniculata, Lasiodora parahybana, Chilobrachys sp. "Vietnam blue", Thrixopelma ockerti). References are made to the dimensions of the terrariums, the litter used and considerations on their quality and the influence on tarantulas. There are described different environmental materials that can be used, the microclimate parameters (temperature, humidity, lighting) monitored during a year, the ways of maintaining their values within the comfort limits of the species as well as the possibilities of hygiene of the terrariums, differentiated according to the type of tarantulas, respectively arboreal, terrestrial and gallery diggers. In this work, we present the results obtained during pedagogical practical lessons using terrariums as an educational tool for the discipline of Meteorology and Climatology, with two classes of students from the Technical Course in Fisheries Resources, at IFRN - Campus Macau. The practical lesson was adopted as a key form of evaluation, and the main goals for using such tool were to inspire the students to revise the contents of the lectures, to help them consolidate the knowledge gathered on subjects such as the atmospheric phenomena and their interactions with the environment, and to assess if the educational methodology in use was significant for the process of learning. This methodology also allowed one deaf student to take part and be included throughout all of the activities proposed. The students set up the terrariums and explained the atmospheric phenomena that occurred within them as well as the interactions of those phenomena with living beings. The use of a terrarium in the classroom enabled students to be stirred, not only by the practical lessons, but also by broader environmental issues. This methodology also motivated the students from the Biology course of IFRN - Campus Macau, who were invited as adjudicators for the terrariums, and plan to use it in their practical lessons in future classrooms as a new educational tool. Mediterranean and Russian tortoises (Testudo spp.) are popular companion animals (pets), despite ongoing controversy concerning privately keeping reptiles. The arguments used during these controversial discussions have often been based on outdated facts. Therefore, a survey was developed to evaluate the current population structure, husbandry conditions, diet regime, and health status of Testudo species in captivity. More than 75% of the 1075 respondents housed their tortoises in an outdoor enclosure containing a greenhouse or cold frame, which is considered the most species-appropriate way of husbandry. Of the respondents, 67.7% fed their tortoises with the optimum diet of more than 80% grasses and weeds during the summer vegetation period. Only 8.2% of respondents owned a tortoise with a diagnosed disease. According to the results, the likelihood of tortoises developing pyramidal growth syndrome, which can be used as an indicator of the quality of tortoise husbandry, was high in tortoises kept in a terrarium and/or fed a diet of less than 80% grasses and weeds in summer. This article examines the potential of repurposing abandoned indoor retail spaces into artificial landscapes as terrariums. By transforming these neglected areas, which would otherwise contribute to the proliferation of brownfields, into large virtual terrariums, a novel and unexplored utilization of extinct vegetation is made possible. This article investigates the educational and experiential benefits of such artificial landscapes, highlighting their role in enhancing understanding of regional impacts of change in the Anthropocene. Additionally, it explores the potential for environmental optimization and interaction within these terrariums, considering temperature calibration, climate conditioning, and the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS dimension is particularly emphasized, as it enables spatial analysis and landscape preservation, regional decision support systems, and further contributes to exploring this concept. Expressive terrariums are a recent intervention in the field of ecological art therapy, which combines nature-based horticultural therapy with arts-based activities. An expressive terrarium consists of a plant terrarium in a glass bowl that contains living plants and objects that form a personal artistic-creative whole. The aim of this preliminary qualitative study was to explore the meanings and effects of making and tending an expressive terrarium, as well as its potential as an intervention tool in creative arts therapies. Twenty-three college students were asked to describe their experiences. The findings yielded three themes: (1) their perceptions of the terrarium building workshop, (2) their experiences and feelings while making the terrarium and when (3) tending the terrarium over time. The building phase was shown to facilitate an experience of flow, emotional expression, transformation and elicitation of cognitive skills. The tending phase was perceived as building a relationship with the growing and changing terrarium. The terrarium itself was seen as promoting self-observation. Making and tending the terrarium allowed the participants to engage in developmental tasks and experiences related to young adulthood. These facets of the participants' experiences thus support the use of the expressive terrarium in therapeutic settings. • Making and tending an expressive terrarium was described. • Interviews of twenty-three college students were collected of their experiences. • The building of the expressive terrarium facilitated an experience of flow, emotional expression and transformation. • Tending the terrarium was perceived as building a relationship with it. • The participants' experiences support the use of the expressive terrarium in therapeutic settings. The utilitarian Wardian case, a precursor of the modern-day terrarium, was used for packing and transporting plants around the globe, and has long been recognized as an instrument of nineteenth-century colonial enterprise and exploitation. However, the decorative versions of this device installed in Victorian homes performed a different sort of ideological work. In this essay, I investigate the graphic descriptions of coal smoke and air pollution that appeared in nearly every account of terrarium technology from this period. Combining scholarship on the environment with theories of the miniature, I argue that the Wardian case helped the Victorians conceptualize their increasingly fraught relationship to the natural world. Analyzing the repeated emphasis on air quality in textual and visual representations of the Wardian case recovers the story of a manufactured commodity that inadvertently brought the consequences of industrialization to the forefront of Victorian domestic life. Josef Friedrich Schmidtler turned 80 years old and is honored as one of the most prominent members of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Studies (DGHT). He has published significant findings on the biology and systematics of lacertids in the Near East and has discovered and described a number of new species. Schmidtler possesses an impressive collection of herpetological books and is increasingly dedicated to questions regarding the history of herpetology. The magazine "Sekretär" of the Working Group for Literature and History of Herpetology and Terrarium Studies (LGHT) is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. The first issues were published under the title "Contributions to the History of Herpetology and Terrarium Studies" and later expanded with the subtitle "Contributions to the Literature and History of Herpetology and Terrarium Studies". In recent years, only one issue per year has been published, but this year we are returning to a biennial rhythm. The current issue contains two extensive works on the history of herpetological research on the Balkan Peninsula and on Dr. Fritz Steinheil's work "The European Snakes - Copperplate Engravings from Photographs of Living Animals".
