Microalgae can be used for the treatment of municipal wastewater. The application of microalgal biofilms in wastewater treatment systems seems attractive, being able to remove nitrogen, phosphorus and COD from wastewater at a short hydraulic retention time. This study therefore investigates the area requirement, achieved effluent concentrations and biomass production of a hypothetical large-scale microalgal biofilm system treating municipal wastewater. Three scenarios were defined: using microalgal biofilms: (1) as a post-treatment; (2) as a second stage of wastewater treatment, after a first stage in which COD is removed by activated sludge; and (3) in a symbiotic microalgal/heterotrophic system. The analysis showed that in the Netherlands, the area requirements for these three scenarios range from 0.32 to 2.1 m2 per person equivalent. Moreover, it was found that it was not possible to simultaneously remove all nitrogen and phosphorus from the wastewater, because of the nitrogen:phosphorus ratio in the wastewater. Phosphorus was limiting in the post-treatment scenario, while nitrogen was limiting in the two other scenarios. Furthermore, a substantial amount of microalgal biomass was produced, ranging from 13 to 59 g per person equivalent per day. These findings show that microalgal biofilm systems hold large potential as seasonal wastewater treatment systems and that it is worthwhile to investigate these systems further

Membrane bioreactors represent a promising technology for wastewater treatment, already applied to a wide variety of industrial effluents and sewage. Gas or air sparging is a commonly applied approach to generate surface shear to control fouling phenomena and cake formation causing flux reduction. In inside-out tubular membranes, gas sparging is usually applied to promote the development of a slug flow regime. Our present paper describes the development of a novel technique to study particle dynamics in tubular systems under slug flow regime. It combines the use of a laser beam generator to illuminate model particles, which are then motion pictured by means of a high speed camera. Digital video analysis is subsequently used to follow and study particle movements. The presented technique can be combined with other approaches such as CFD analysis in order to advance in the understanding of particle dynamics in tubular membrane systems., Water Management, Civil Engineering and Geosciences

Huishoudelijk afvalwater bevat veel energie. Rioolwaterzuiveringsinstallaties hebben zodoende de potentie om energieproducerend te worden in plaats van energieconsumerend. Er zijn reeds initiatieven in gang gezet die zich richten op het terugwinnen van energie in de vorm van biogas door het vergisten van primair en secundair slib. Een meer directe route naar biogas is de anaerobe zuivering van het afvalwater. Het effluent van een anaerobe reactor bevat echter nog wel ammonium en opgelost methaan (een sterk broeikasgas). Beide kunnen omgezet worden met de recentelijk ontdekte DAMO-bacteriën: denitrificatie gekoppeld aan anaerobe methaanoxidatie. Dit biedt nieuwe mogelijkheden voor een energie-efficiënte afvalwaterbehandeling.

De uitdaging voor de behandeling van geconcentreerd zwart water. Presentatie Sanitation challenge, 20-05-2008

De laatste decennia is wereldwijd veel onderzoek verricht naar de MBR-technologie. Desondanks ontbreekt vooralsnog een technologische doorbraak voor zuivering van communaal afvalwater. De kosten van de MBR-technologie blijven hoger dan voor de conventionele zuiveringstechnieken. Kostenvermindering zal de komende jaren dan ook de belangrijkste stimulans zijn voor verder onderzoek en ontwikkeling van MBR-technologie voor communale waterzuivering. De aandacht zal zich moeten richten op drie gebieden: vervuiling, filtratie en beluchting. Naast onderzoek gericht op kostenreductie is ontwikkeling van innovatieve, meer duurzame MBR-concepten gewenst. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn decentrale zuivering om te komen tot gedeeltelijk hergebruik van water en wellicht nutriënten, anaërobe zuivering van afvalwater en het toepassen van MBR-technologie in combinatie met de productie van elektriciteit in een brandstofcel. De potentiële voordelen legitimeren een verdere verkenning van deze innovatieve MBR-concepten, Cutting down the operational costs of MBR technology will be the key driver for research. This article outlines some research areas and specific topics that potentially will contribute to lower costs. Special attention to these topics should be given the coming years. Long term research should focus on sustainable MBR concepts. A few innovative developments will be presented

The production, use and disposal of many compounds inevitably leads to their presence in the environment as organic trace pollutants. Although their concentration may be low, these trace compounds can present an environmental hazard associated with their toxicity for human beings, their potential to accumulate in biota and ecosystems and in some cases their function as a catalyst in the destruction of the ozone in the stratosphere.In many cases these organic trace compounds enter the sewage system and will finally appear in municipal activated sludge plants. Several processes determine their distribution in these plants. Hydrophobic compounds can partition to the sludge and in this manner may create a potential hazard associated with sludge disposal. Volatile organic compounds are amenable to air stripping and surface desorption and therefore are frequently found in the off-gas of activated sludge plants. Whereas sorption and volatilisation merely rearrange the distribution of compounds among the different environmental compartments (sludge, air and water), only a destructive process such as biodegradation can actually remove them from the environment.During the last two decades several activated sludge fate models have been developed. These models are used (i) to predict the environmental exposure to specific organic trace compounds expected to appear in municipal wastewater's, (ii) to optimise the design and control of treatment plants with respect to the removal of these pollutants and (iii) to establish limits on treatment plant influent loads based upon allowable effluent loads. The reliability of these models only has been demonstrated to a limited extent and therefore their applicability remains uncertain. A validation study may help to gain some confidence in these models, but also can reveal some of their shortcomings.Based on an extensive literature review such a validation study was set-up. Panden in het buitengebied die niet op de riolering zullen worden aangesloten, dienen afvalwater ter plaatse te behandelen. De Wettelijke regelingen hiervoor zijn opgenomen in de Wet verontreiniging oppervlaktewateren en in de Wet bodembescherming. Ter ondersteuning van deze regelingen en ter bescherming van de eigenaar van een systeem voor de individuele behandeling van afvalwater (een IBA), stelt het Kiwa in opdracht van de minister van VROM een systeem op voor de kwaliteitsborging van IBA's. Het College van Deskundigen IBA-systemen houdt hierop toezicht. Een onderdeel van de kwaliteitsborging is een attest voor de werking van de IBA. Hiervoor wordt een IBA onder gecontroleerde omstandigheden gedurende ca. een half jaar getest op zijn werking. Ook extreme belastingen van de IBA maken deel uit van de test. De grondslagen voor de attestering zijn vastgelegd in de Beoordelingsrichtlijn K 10002 voor de attestering van IBA-systemen. Deze beoordelingsrichtlijn is inmiddels bindend verklaard als basis voor de attestering. Hierbij wordt uitgegaan van de kwaliteitsklassen I, II, IIIa en IIIb, zoals die door de CIW / CUWVO voor het te lozen gezuiverde afvalwater zijn opgesteld. Het betreft hier dan de geschiktheid voor lozingen op niet kritische, kritische en zeer kritische gebieden.
