Abstract

Tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSC) are highly proliferative neoplasms that generally respond well to platinum/taxane chemotherapy. We recently identified minichromosome maintenance complex component 3 (MCM3), which is involved in the initiation of DNA replication and proliferation, as a favorable prognostic marker in HGSC. Our objective was to further validate whether MCM3 mRNA expression and possibly MCM3 protein levels are associated with survival in patients with HGSC. MCM3 mRNA expression was measured using NanoString expression profiling on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue (N = 2355 HGSC) and MCM3 protein expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry (N = 522 HGSC) and compared with Ki-67. Kaplan-Meier curves and the Cox proportional hazards model were used to estimate associations with survival. The strategies presented in this paper aim to enhance the quality of the study abroad program, while creating an enjoyable, stimulating, and memorable experience for the students and faculty mentor.

81. A Systematic Literature Review of Peer-Led Strategies for Promoting Physical Activity Levels of Adolescents

Abstract

Background: Low levels of physical activity (PA) in adolescents highlight the necessity for effective intervention. During adolescence, peer relationships can be a fundamental aspect of adopting and maintaining positive health behaviors. Aim: This review aims to determine peer-led strategies that showed promise to improve PA levels of adolescents. It will also identify patterns across these interventions, including training provided and the behavior change techniques (BCTs) employed. Method: Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PubMed, PsychINFO, and Scopus were searched using key concepts of peer, PA and adolescent for articles that examined interventions that had a peer-led component and reported on at least one PA outcome in 12- to 19-year-olds. Following title and abstract screening of 1,509 studies, and full text review stage, 18 progressed to data synthesis. Methodological quality was assessed using an adapted scale. Results: Quality assessment identified 11 studies as high quality. Half of the included studies (n = 9) reported improved PA outcomes in the school setting. The most prominent behavioral change techniques were social support, information about health consequences, and demonstration of the behavior. Older adolescents leading younger peers and younger adolescents leading those of the same age showed potential. Seldom have older adolescents been targeted. Gender-specific interventions showed the most promise. Conclusion: Peer leadership requires careful planning and in the school setting can be a resourceful way of promoting adolescent PA.

82. The effects of visual attention on information processing in two-alternative forced choice tasks : a mouse tracking investigation

Abstract

The first part of this thesis investigated the dynamics of visual attention. Traditional performance measures include error rates or response times; however, in this thesis computer mouse tracking was used to provide response times as well as initiation times and response trajectories (including maximum deviation and area under the curve measures). Chapter 2 demonstrated that mouse tracking could be used effectively to replicate previous findings from a simple spatial orientating paradigm (Posner cueing); compared to the use of valid and neutral cues, when invalid cues were presented participants performance declined. Additionally, the analysis demonstrated that neutral cues resulted in increased hesitation at the start of each trial. Chapter 3 demonstrated that mouse tracking in conjunction visual search tasks could replicate previous findings that the inclusion of distractors decreased participants ability to discriminate the orientation of a target; and that the location of the target affected response trajectories. Chapter 4 investigated the role of manipulating the number of targets and cues in an orientation discrimination task. It was found that whilst increasing targets improved participants ability at target discrimination, cues were largely ignored. In order to investigate whether this was due to potential hemifield effects in the design, Chapter 5 demonstrated that a separate hemifield advantage existed only in tasks without distractors. The second part of thesis explored research that claimed movement could influence cognition. However, Chapters 6 demonstrated that it was difficult to replicate these findings and Chapter 7 demonstrated through the use of mouse tracking analysis that previous findings most likely resulted from the mere exposure effect. The overarching conclusion is that mouse tracking provides an easy low-cost methodology that is able to provide valuable information on low level cognitive processes.

Abstract

This thesis examines how EAP practitioners construct their professional identities in response to the meanings they attach to notions of professionalism and issues perceived to be facing the EAP profession. Although EAP has produced a substantial body of research in its short history as a profession, few studies have focused on EAP practitioners themselves, particularly in terms of their professional identities. This thesis contributes to the field by providing a rich understanding of how a group of EAP practitioners construct their own professional identity and presenting a new theoretical perspective on EAP identity in the form of key theories from Symbolic Interactionism. This methodological framework provides original insight into how practitioners’ identities may be constructed in response to their own contexts and the framing of EAP identities in the literature. The study consists of in-depth interviews with 17 EAP practitioners working in the UK. The research findings reveal practitioners who collectively view themselves as effective teachers but face tensions around positioning, marginalisation and recognition in their attempts to manage the liminal status of EAP in higher education and in barriers to maintaining this identity. This tension manifests in fragmented identities that may align with either academic or support service roles, or sometimes occupy a more liminal space. The findings also reveal practitioners who perceive themselves to be marginalised or stigmatised within the academy, and therefore engage in impression management strategies in an attempt to carve out a more stable identity for EAP. Another tension that emerges is that between conceptualisations of EAP identity in the literature and participants’ own constructions of their identities. These findings have implications for the need to construct a greater shared understanding of EAP practitioner identity in order to reduce professional disarticulation.

Abstract

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials have been obtained by exfoliation of van der Waals crystals. Recently, there has been growing interest in fabricating synthetic 2D crystals which have no layered bulk analogues. These efforts have been focused mainly on the surface growth of molecules in high vacuum. Here, we report an approach to making 2D crystals of covalent solids by chemical conversion of van der Waals layers. As an example, we use 2D indium selenide (InSe) obtained by exfoliation and converted it by direct fluorination into indium fluoride (InF3), which has a non-layered, rhombohedral structure and therefore cannot be possibly obtained by exfoliation. The conversion of InSe into InF3 is found to be feasible for thicknesses down to three layers of InSe, and the obtained stable InF3 layers are doped with selenium. We study this new 2D material by optical, electron transport and Raman measurements and show that it is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 2.2 eV, exhibiting high optical transparency across the visible and infrared spectral ranges. We also demonstrate the scalability of our approach by chemical conversion of large-area, thin InSe laminates obtained by liquid exfoliation into InF3 films. The concept of chemical conversion of cleavable thin van der Waals crystals into covalently-bonded non-cleavable ones opens exciting prospects for synthesizing a wide variety of novel atomically thin covalent crystals.

94. (Re-)Framing 'the monster' : de-constructing the (re)presentation of serial killer Aileen Wuornos

Abstract

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" - Atticus Finch, "To Kill a Mockingbird." (Harper Lee, 1982: 39) This remark by Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (Lee, 1982) captures the complexity of the human condition, specifically how we can never truly understand a person until we consider how they interpret the world around them, and their place within it. Yet in this thesis, I endeavour to chart the interplay that exists between an individual's linguistic performance in interaction and the psychological drivers that engender such performances. To date there has been little in the way of academic exploration into determining what frameworks of linguistic interaction, such as facework, can inform us about an individual's psychology, specifically the field of Personal Construct Theory (PCT), which would facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of human behaviour. Such interplay relates to how speakers and hearers interpret one another, with each individual processing information in their own unique way and reacting to it according to these intents and motivations. This study aims to investigate the proposed complimentary relationship between linguistic facework, and PCT, to establish a better understanding as to what our linguistic performances inform us about an individual's psychological profile, particularly their motivations and intent. Taking the documentary footage of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos, I have constructed a framework which incorporates a complimentary analysis of facework and PCT, to draw conclusions as to what Wuornos' linguistic behaviour tells us about her own personal value constructs and performative intent. This work contributes significantly to both fields of facework and PCT, as it reveals just how multi-layered the concept of performance in interaction is by addressing questions regarding why people choose to use certain linguistic facework strategies over others, by analysing facework within the scope of PCT. This is something that would otherwise be impossible when analysing these frameworks in isolation from one another.

Abstract

This thesis examines the documentary evidence for what happened to the bodies of those killed in battle. It focuses on battles fought by the English in Britain between 1401 and 1685AD and is the first large-scale historical investigation of this topic to be conducted. The main aim is to establish where and how the bodies were disposed of, whilst also considering what factors affected how the dead were treated and whether the Reformation led to any changes in practice. The study is conducted primarily through the examination of contemporary and near-contemporary battle accounts. It also draws on archaeology to explore whether a better historical understanding of battle disposal practices has any implications for the interpretation of battle burials (and vice versa). Most battle accounts show little interest in the fate of the dead. Where they mention the topic, they indicate that the dead were buried on the battlefield or in churches and churchyards. Men of the elite were more likely to be taken for a church burial than lower status individuals. Some of the former were buried in churches near to the battlefield whereas others were taken substantial distances for burial on their homelands. The evidence indicates that, as expected, the Reformation did affect how contemporaries interacted with the dead in the years after a battle, as there were no longer attempts to intercede for the dead or to ensure that they were buried in consecrated ground. Surprisingly, however, there was no evidence that the Reformation led to any change in what happened to the dead immediately after a battle, as there is little evidence that people in the late medieval, pre-Reformation period tried to give the dead an immediate Christian burial. These results have helped to develop a research agenda for both history and archaeology. Thus, future historical research could consider a wider geographical and temporal scope, in order to look for further evidence of the changes in practice that resulted from the Reformation and when these occurred. It will also be important to study conflicts where major cultural differences existed between armies, such as the various Anglo-Irish wars, to see how this affected disposal practices. Further archaeological research could involve the radiocarbon dating of church burials with weapon trauma, as a way of developing understanding for how far the battle dead were taken for burial.
