The Barbara Petchenik Biennial Children’s Map Competition was initiated by the International Cartographic Association 30 years ago, and today, in a globally connected world, it is more important than ever to engage children and young people in thoughtful exploration of the locational realities of the times, as well as to prepare them for future leadership roles. This is particularly important for Africa. This presentation examines the importance of the motif of the Indigenous canoe in the integration of art, craft, cybernetic and cognitive cartography, ecology, movement, epistemology and relationality in the life and work of North American Indigenous Elder William Commanda, founder of the Circle of All Nations. A world-renowned canoe builder and environmentalist, Law of Nature preoccupations featured in his life-long exploration of canoe as material object and epistemological methodological tool, to present ephemeral Indigenous relational and bridge building knowledge and wisdom. His formal outreach to the mainstream world of North America is documented in a 1960s video of the Smithsonian Institute; in Denmark, in commemorative photo/teaching books at the Roskilde Museum and, at age 90, in the Good Enough for Two canoe-making documentary (2006). Today, there is an explosion of interest in the canoe in school and museum settings in Canada, and the spatial and temporal significance of this iconic emblem utilizes and is complemented by semiotic Photoatlas orientation and analysis (after Wolodtschenko). This presentation examines an innovative transdisciplinary Children’s Mapping Project in the evolving work of the National Association of Child Care Workers (NACCW) in South Africa, and the engagement of child and youth care workers (cycws) of the NACCW Isibindi-Ezikoleni (Safe Parks/Courage in Schools) school-based program in locational and aspirational mapping practice with children and youth in seven provinces across South Africa, in collaboration with the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC), Carleton University, and Circle of All Nations, the Legacy work of Indigenous Elder William Commanda. This innovative project initiated in January 2022 engages social services sector workers, researchers and children from a diversity of locations (urban, rural, informal settlements and isolated), with a range of environmental challenges (floods to drought) and community and social challenges (safety, poverty, empowerment) in cartography and a locational exploration of a complex intersection of issues. The presentation will include a preliminary analysis of the children’s map visualizations of environmental and social conditions, and a prioritization of issues for further practice, program and policy development, in partnership with researchers and national and international organizations like the South African Human Rights Commission (Children’s and Migrant Rights Commissioner), the Children’s Institute at the University of Cape Town, and UNICEF. This article presents and discusses the cultural and technological contexts of the development of the Cybercartographic Atlas of Indigenous Perspectives and Knowledge of the Great Lakes Region in Ontario. The atlas was developed to enhance the capability to recover the systemic nature of traditional Indigenous knowledge by electronically interrelating different forms of expressive culture (language, oral traditions, items of material and visual culture, historical documentation). To reach this goal, this atlas includes a “living” geospatial database that serves as an artefact repository and enables communities to contribute geographically relevant knowledge and to develop their own interactive, multimedia online geospatial stories through modules or sections. Two of these modules are discussed here: a treaties module focusing on the survey phase of the Lake Huron treaty process, and a culture module geared toward engaging Aboriginal artists, community members, and high school students in contributing to the development of this community-based atlas. The discussion concludes with a critical look at the potential of cybercartography and the challenges that remain, especially when it comes to further developing the “living” and the collaborative dimensions of cybercartographic atlases. The General Allotment Act of 1887, also known as the Dawes Act, established the legal basis for the United States government to break up remaining tribally-owned reservation lands in the U.S. by allotting individual parcels to tribal members and selling the remaining "surplus." This research explores the processes involved in mapping these historical allotments and describes a method to automatically generate spatial data of allotments. A custom geographic information systems (GIS) tool was created that takes tabular based allotment land descriptions and digital Public Land Survey (PLSS) databases to automatically generate spatial and attribute data of those land parcels. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North and South Dakota was used as the initial study area to test the mapping technique, which resulted in successfully auto-mapping over 99.1% of allotted lands on the reservation, including the smallest aliquot parcels. This GIS technique can be used to map any tribal lands or reservation with allotment data available, and currently it can be used to map over 120 individual reservations using publicly available data from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Kumeyaay people were historically hunter-gatherers with a strong relationship with their natural resources. Due to various processes, such as missionary colonization, agrarian reform, and the definition of the border between the USA and Mexico in 1838, the Indigenous populations faced reduced mobility within their territory and modified their lifestyles, highly related to landscape and plants. One of their strong traditional practices associated with plant resources, basket-making, has likewise changed. Today, this activity is one of the most important sources of income for many of the families in the community. Nevertheless, this is being now threatened by the loss of vegetation cover, from which they obtain primary basket-making material and is now far from being environmentally and economically sustainable. An interdisciplinary group is addressing this problem from a multidisciplinary perspective and through a participatory methodological approach based on community mapping to enable the integration of local and scientific knowledge and to create vegetation management and conservation actions. Community-based Indigenous mapping has proven to be a powerful tool for the integration of traditional knowledge and its various dimensions, and knowledge integration between traditional and scientific knowledge has been successful. The project allowed for plant population analysis and adequate decision-making regarding natural resources management and conservation. Aim Methods Results Conclusions To modify the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating to account for ultra‐processing and compare the alignment of the modified ratings with NOVA classifications and the current Australian Dietary Guidelines classifications of core (recommended foods) and discretionary (foods to limit).Data was cross‐sectionally analysed for 25 486 products. Four approaches were compared to the original Health Star Rating: (1) five ‘negative’ points added to ultra‐processed products (modification 1; inclusion approach); (2) ultra‐processed products restricted to a maximum of 3.0 Health Stars (modification 2; capping approach); (3 and 4) same approach used for modifications 1 and 2 but only applied to products that already exceeded 10 ‘negative’ points from existing Health Star Rating attributes (modifications 3 and 4, respectively; hybrid approaches). Alignment occurred when products (i) received <3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA group 4 (for NOVA comparison) or discretionary (for Dietary Guidelines comparison), or (ii) received ≥3.5 Health Stars and were NOVA groups 1–3 or core.All Health Star Rating modifications resulted in greater alignment with NOVA (ranging from 69% to 88%) compared to the original Health Star Rating (66%). None of the modifications resulted in greater alignment to the Dietary Guidelines classifications overall (69% to 76%, compared with 77% for the original Health Star Rating), but alignment varied considerably by food category.If ultra‐processing were incorporated into the Australian and New Zealand Health Star Rating, consideration of ultra‐processing within the broader dietary guidance framework would be essential to ensure coherent dietary messaging to Australians. Various governments are considering the implementation of energy labelling on alcohol products as one element of obesity prevention policies. However, little is known about the most effective ways to communicate energy information to consumers. The aim of the present study was to explore consumers' reactions to different energy information provision formats to assist the development of effective energy labels. Nine focus groups (n=83 participants) were conducted with Australian adults who reported drinking alcohol at least twice per month. Participants were exposed to an energy-only information label and labels displaying full nutrition information panels. A thematic analysis approach was used to identify key issues. While few participants were overtly enthusiastic about the mandatory display of energy values on alcohol products, there was general support for the provision of this information to assist those drinkers who could benefit from it. Substantial confusion was apparent as participants attempted to distil meaning from the provided information, particularly where it was expressed in terms of serving sizes and standard drinks. Full nutrition panels were especially problematic in terms of creating a health halo due to the nil or low values for multiple nutrients listed. This was especially notable for information relating to sugar content. Overall, there appears to be inadequate public understanding of the concept of dietary energy in alcoholic beverages and the various terms used to quantify its presence, which is likely to limit the utility of mandatory energy information provision requirements unless they are accompanied by effective community education., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024. Bennett fractures are inherently unstable partial articular fractures of the base of the first metacarpal, often resulting from an axial load applied to a partially flexed metacarpal. Multiple options are available for the surgical stabilization of Bennett fractures; each option has associated drawbacks. We present a technique of fixation with headless compression screw(s), combined with suspension fixation, to overcome some of these limitations, with good results., (© 2022 The Authors.)
