Coastal managers, policymakers, and scientists use shoreline accretion/erosion trends to determine the coastline’s historical evolution and generate models capable of predicting future changes. Different solutions have been developed to obtain shoreline positions from Earth observation data in recent years, the so-called Satellite-Derived Shorelines (SDS). Most of the methodologies available in the literature use multispectral optical satellite imagery. This paper proposes two new methods for shoreline mapping at the subpixel level based on PRISMA hyperspectral imagery. The first one analyses the spectral signatures along defined beach profiles. The second method uses techniques more commonly applied to multispectral image analysis, such as Spectral Unmixing algorithms and Spatial Attraction Models. The results obtained with both methodologies are validated on three Mediterranean microtidal beaches located in two different countries, Italy and Greece, using image-based ground truth shorelines manually photointerpreted and digitised. The obtained errors are around 6 and 7 m for the first and second methods, respectively. These results are comparable to the errors obtained from multispectral data. The paper also discusses the capability of the two methods to identify two different shoreline proxies.

[ES]Los ecosistemas de la Tierra están constantemente cambiando a consecuencia de las actuales condiciones naturales y atmosféricas y de la presión ejercida por las actividades humanas. Monitorizar el medio ambiente y su estado ayuda a transformar el círculo vicioso que existe entre los impactos derivados del cambio climático, la degradación del ecosistema y el aumento del riesgo de desastres. La interpretación de parámetros biofísicos obtenidos por teledetección puede suplir o complementar los métodos clásicos de monitorización de la vegetación (ej., visitas de campo, fotointerpretación o análisis de datos auxiliares). El uso exclusivo de técnicas tradicionales no resulta lo suficientemente eficaz para adquirir la dinámica de la vegetación, ni en estudios a largo plazo ni en grandes áreas, pues se trata de técnicas laboriosas, anticuadas y frecuentemente costosas. El lanzamiento de la plataforma satelital Sentinel-2 (S2) B, desarrollada y operada por la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA), en marzo de 2017 ha permitido a la Comunidad Científica obtener de forma gratuita datos multiespectrales de alta resolución cada cinco días. El sensor Multiespectral (MSI) a bordo de S2 ha superado las características de la tradicionalmente utilizada familia de satélites de Observación de la Tierra (OT) Landsat, operada conjuntamente por la Administración Nacional de Aeronáutica y del Espacio (NASA) y el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS). En Enero de 2020, la Dirección General de Industria de Defensa y Espacio de la Comisión Europea (DG-DEFIS) ha sido creada para desarrollar y consolidar todas las actividades de la Unión Europea (UE) relacionadas con el espacio dentro de un único Programa Espacial Europeo, asegurándose el liderazgo en el ámbito espacial a nivel global. La Parte I introduce el estado del arte, la motivación y los objetivos perseguidos en esta Tesis Doctoral. Presenta las dos preguntas de investigación en que se ha basado este trabajo: “¿Qué parámetros biofísicos están disponibles como productos completos, abiertos y gratuitos?” (respondida por la Parte II) y “¿Cómo vincular la interpretación de parámetros biofísicos y las necesidades de los agentes interesados a nivel local?” (respondida por la Parte III. Como se concluye en la Parte IV, esta Tesis Doctoral demuestra el potencial de los parámetros biofísicos obtenidos por teledetección para contribuir a la política y a la toma de decisiones a nivel ambiental. Además, las herramientas y enfoques desarrollados abordan necesidades de los responsables de la toma de decisiones en cuanto a la disponibilidad de los datos, posibilidad de monitorizar a largo plazo y accesibilidad a datos de alta resolución espacial. El objetivo final es maximizar los beneficios de los datos y servicios del programa Copernicus. Este enfoque permitirá el desarrollo de una estrategia interdisciplinaria de OT en la UE que aborde demandas sociales evolutivas.

In the near future, the oceans will be subjected to a massive development of marine infrastructures, including offshore wind, tidal and wave energy farms and constructions for marine aquaculture. The development of these facilities will unavoidably exert environmental pressures on marine ecosystems. It is therefore crucial that the economic costs, the use of marine space and the environmental impacts of these activities remain within acceptable limits. Moreover, the installation of arrays of wave energy devices is still far from being economically feasible due to many combined aspects, such as immature technologies for energy conversion, local energy storage and moorings. Therefore, multi-purpose solutions combining renewable energy from the sea (wind, wave, tide), aquaculture and transportation facilities can be considered as a challenging, yet advantageous, way to boost blue growth. This would be due to the sharing of the costs of installation and using the produced energy locally to feed the different functionalities and optimizing marine spatial planning. This paper focuses on the synergies that may be produced by a multi-purpose offshore installation in a relatively calm sea, i.e. , the Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy, and specifically offshore Venice. It analyzes the combination of aquaculture, energy production from wind and waves, and energy storage or transfer. Alternative solutions are evaluated based on specific criteria, including the maturity of the technology, the environmental impact, the induced risks and the costs. Based on expert judgment, the alternatives are ranked and a preliminary layout of the selected multi-purpose installation for the case study is proposed, to further allow the exploitation of the synergies among different functionalities.

To contribute in understanding remote sensing technologies to monitor and maintain quality of life on this biosphere, this thesis, by moving from biological ecology to geomorphology within a variety of Earth Science and related observation approaches, develop an holistic understanding of how complex spatial patterns can be investigated by means of innovative remote sensing application and how spatial vegetation pattern can influence and describe trends in coastal habitat distribution. An overall approach in terms of methodology and knowledge has been developed and named FHyL, Field measurements, Hyperspectral imagery and LiDAR altimetry. FHyL is a set of modular processes that moving through the path of fixed procedures produces descriptive and detailed biophysical maps of complex coastal ecosystems. At the base of the innovative approach are both the new sub-pixel target detection algorithm that integrates linear mixing models with multisensory analysis and the use of existing techniques to obtain new ways of analyzing feedback from ecology and geomorphology in coastal ecosystem assessment. This PhD thesis begin with an introduction that focus the specific context of feedbacks between ecology and geomorphology and the increasing interests in remote sensing application for environmental studies and monitoring in coastal areas. An overview of the principles at the base of the implemented methodology is included with a brief description of the three cases studies. The chapters ends with a the aims and purposes of the research. The second chapter faces up with the methodology and shows in a schematic view the FHyL approach applied to different typology of coastal areas. Then, three chapters identify the three study cases developed through the FHyL approach: - Coastal complex seabed; - Coastal beach dune systems; - Shallow muddy lake; Each chapter is organized as a scientific paper with the introduction, methods, results and discussion, so that, for each of the three chapters, the state of the art and reference are provided, as well as the names of collaborators. Conclusions take in account challenges and opportunity that recent advances in remote sensing offered to this research for accurate biophysical mapping and then the dissemination activities that supported the development of this thesis are listed at the end of the volume. They represented the end to end way used during thesis developments to test the scientific achievements. Per contribuire alla comprensione dell’utilità delle tecnologie di telerilevamento per il monitoraggio e il supporto al mantenimento della vita nella biosfera, questa tesi, muovendosi tra l’ecologia biologica e la geomorfologia attraverso una varietà di approcci delle scienze della Terra e della sua osservazione, sviluppa una comprensione olistica e tenta di comprendere come i complessi pattern spaziali possono essere indagati attraverso applicazioni innovative del telerilevamento. Essa si propone inoltre di contribuire a comprendere come i pattern spaziali della vegetazione possono influenzare e descrivere i trend di distribuzione degli habitat costieri attraverso lo sviluppo di un approccio analitico descrittivo. Tale approccio di analisi combina quindi il telerilevamento alla conoscenza dei sistemi ambientali complessi ed è stato nominato FHyL, Field measurements, Hyperspectral imagery and LiDAR altimetry poiché esso è costituito da un set di procedure modulari che producono mappature biofisiche descrittive e dettagliate di complessi ecosistemi costieri da tre specifiche tipologie di dato. Alla base dell’approccio innovativo c’è un algoritmo d’indagine per target anche più piccoli di un singolo pixel che integra l’analisi della mistura spettrale con l’analisi multi sensore. In particolare la tesi si articola in un’introduzione che focalizza il contesto di feedback tra ecologia e geomorfologia ed il crescente interesse per le applicazioni del telerilevamento nel monitoraggio ambientale. Dopo una definizione dei principi alla base della metodologia implementata e una sinossi dei tre casi di studio (fondi marino costieri, sistemi spiaggia duna e laghi con acque basse) il capitolo termina definendo gli scopi e i propositi di questa ricerca. Il secondo capitolo riguarda l’algoritmo e la metodologia sviluppata. I tre capitoli successivi rappresentano i tre casi di studio e sono organizzati come articoli scientifici con un’introduzione, la metodologia, i risultati e la discussione e ciascuno include una specifica bibliografia e i nomi dei collaboratori. Le conclusioni si confrontano con le questioni e le opportunità che il telerilevamento ha fornito a questo lavoro che si inserisce nel settore dei monitoraggi e della conoscenza degli ecosistemi costieri. Infine sono riportate le attività di divulgazione scientifica che hanno rappresentato un’importante sorgente di feedback durante il percorso di ricerca. In questa tesi vengono illustrati gli strumenti, i dati e le metodologie utilizzabili per la caratterizzazione da remoto di spiagge sabbiose. Il caso studio descritto è quello della caratterizzazione della spiaggia di Sabaudia (LT) con sensore LiDAR e iperspettrale aviotrasportati condotto nella primavera del 2009. I dati LiDAR sono stati utilizzati per l’estrazione della linea di costa e del piede della duna e per quantificare le differenze in volume di sedimento occorse tra il 2008 e 2009 sulla spiaggia di Sabaudia. I dati del sensore iperspettrale MIVIS, assieme alle analisi condotte su un numero ridotto di campioni di sedimento, sono stati utilizzati per una stima di dettaglio delle proprietà mineralogiche e granulometriche del sedimento in ciascun punto della spiaggia di Sabaudia. L’ambito applicativo approfondito in questa tesi è quello del ripascimento delle spiagge, ma i risultati ottenuti sono facilmente utilizzabili in un gran numero di applicazioni scientifiche, ambientali e di ICZM.
