Abstract

While cancel culture has become a social media buzzword, scholarly understanding of this phenomenon is still at its nascent stage. To contribute to a more nuanced understanding of cancel culture, this study uses a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach by starting with in-depth interviews with social media users (n = 20) followed by a national online survey (n = 786) in Singapore. Through the interviews, we found that our participants understand cancel culture as more than just a mob engaged in public shaming on social media; it also involves perceptions of power imbalance and social justice. Building on these perspectives from our interviews, we tested the framework of theory of planned behavior in predicting intention to engage in cancel culture and expanded it by examining the effects of people’s belief in a just world using an online national survey in Singapore. The analysis showed that attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were positively related to intention to engage in cancel culture, while general belief in a just world was a negative predictor. Abstract

Electrocatalytic carbon monoxide reduction has been previously reported to yield a range of carbonaceous products including alcohols, hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids. However, esters, an important family of organic compounds, have not been formed. Herein, we report the electrosynthesis of C3 to C6 acetate esters (H3C−(C=O)−O−R) from carbon monoxide using copper catalysts in a membrane electrode assembly cell. Ethyl acetate and propyl acetate could be produced with an unprecedented total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ∼22 % and with a current density of up to −55 mA cm−2, alongside minor quantities of methyl acetate and butyl acetate. The esters are produced via the addition reaction of ethenone (H2C=C=O) and alcohols produced during CO reduction. We show that the near water‐free reaction conditions and the high local pH play key roles in the formation of the esters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Improving the properties of polyvinyl chloride matrix by the incorporation of carbonaceous filler by melt mixing is an unusual thought in the polymer research. Here we incorporated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a filler into plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PPVC) matrix by melt mixing, an eco-friendly method. The effect of addition of filler in the morphology of the PPVC nanocomposites was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The mechanical response of the nanocomposites to an applied stress was studied. A 50% improvement in mechanical properties was obtained at a low filler loading. A decrease in elongation was observed at higher RGO loading. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the nanocomposites indicated an increase in glass transition temperature of the PVC up on the addition of RGO. This has confirmed the confinement of PVC chains at the graphene surface. As a result, the storage modulus of the nanocomposites showed an increase up on the addition of the nanofiller. Theoretical values of the storage modulus were calculated using various theoretical equations. Abstract

We describe a simple and versatile approach for enhanced nanoparticle density multiplication through the block copolymer self-assembly technique for application in memory devices. Templates of block copolymers with functional groups directed the selective electrostatic self-assembly of the pre-formed gold nanoparticles to form gold nanocluster arrays. By simply increasing the density of the polymer templates by manipulating the spin coating conditions, a lateral increase in the nanoparticle density is observed. The significance of the particle density multiplication was best observed when they were used as charge storage centers in flash memories. Minimization of the pitch (or maximization of the template density) resulted in a maximum memory window of about 1.63 V, with a charge trap state density of 4.93 × 1011 cm−2 in the gold nanocluster arrays. The reported approach offers exciting opportunities to fabricate multicomponent nanostructure-based memory devices tailored for enhanced memory performance. In addition, the nanoparticle density can be increased significantly further when combined systematically with the hierarchical block copolymer self-assembly approach.

Abstract

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is traditionally grown at a high temperature and subsequently patterned to study its electronic properties or make devices. This method imposes severe limitations on the shape and size of MoS2crystals that can be patterned precisely at required positions. Here, we describe a method of direct nanoscale patterning of MoS2at room temperature by exposing a molybdenum thiocubane single-source precursor to a beam of electrons. Molybdenum thiocubanes with various alkylxanthate moieties [Mo4S4(ROCS2)6, where R = alkyl] were prepared using a “self-assembly” approach. Micro-Raman and micro-FTIR spectroscopic studies suggest that exposure to a relatively smaller dose of electrons results in the breakdown of xanthate moieties, leading to the formation of MoS2. High-resolution transmission electron micrographs suggest that the growth of MoS2most likely happens along (100) planes. An electron-beam-induced chemical transformation of a molybdenum thiocubane resist was exploited to fabricate sub-10 nm MoS2lines and dense dots as small as 13 nm with a pitch of 33 nm. Since this technique does not require the liftoff and etching steps, patterning of MoS2with interesting shapes, sizes, and thicknesses potentially leading to tunable band gap is possible.

80. Plasmonic Gold Nanocrosses with Multidirectional Excitation and Strong Photothermal Effect

Abstract

We report a facile chemical synthesis of well-defined gold nanocrosses through anisotropic growth along both ⟨110⟩ and ⟨001⟩, whereas gold nanorods grow only along either ⟨110⟩ or ⟨001⟩. The multiple branching was achieved by breaking the face-centered-cubic lattice symmetry of gold through copper-induced formation of single or double twins, and the resulting gold nanocrosses exhibited pronounced near-IR absorption with a great extension to the mid-IR region. As studied by discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulations, the entire nanocross gets excited even when one of the branches is exposed to incident light. The above properties make them useful as octopus antennas for capturing near-IR light for effective photothermal destruction of cells. The cell damage process was analyzed using the Arrhenius model, and its intrinsic thermodynamic characteristics were determined quantitatively. Besides effective photothermal treatment and two-photon luminescence imaging, the near- and mid-IR-absorbing gold nanocrosses may also find applications in IR sensing, thermal imaging, telecommunications, and the like.

81. Field-Free Manipulation of Two-Dimensional Ferromagnet CrTe2by Spin–Orbit Torques

Abstract

Electrical manipulation of magnetic states in two-dimensional ferromagnetic systems is crucial in information storage and low-dimensional spintronics. Spin–orbit torque presents a rapid and energy-efficient method for electrical control of the magnetization. In this letter, we demonstrate a wafer-scale spin–orbit torque switching of two-dimensional ferromagnetic states. Using molecular beam epitaxy, we fabricate two-dimensional heterostructures composed of low crystal-symmetry WTe2and ferromagnet CrTe2with perpendicular anisotropy. By utilizing out-of-plane spins generated from WTe2, we achieve field-free switching of the CrTe2perpendicular magnetization. The threshold switching current density in CrTe2/WTe2is 1.2 × 106A/cm2, 20 times smaller than that of the CrTe2/Pt control sample even with an external magnetic field. In addition, the switching behavior can be modulated by external magnetic fields and crystal symmetry. Our findings demonstrate a controllable and all-electric manipulation of perpendicular magnetization in a two-dimensional ferromagnet, representing a significant advancement toward the practical implementation of low-dimensional spintronic devices.

Abstract

L10 FePtC granular media are being studied as potential future magnetic recording media and are set to be used in conjunction with heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) to enable recording at write fields within the range of current day recording heads. Media structures based on a FePtC storage layer and a capping layer can alleviate the switching field distribution (SFD) requirements of HAMR and reduce the noise originating from the writing process. However, the current designs suffer from SFD issues due to high temperature writing. To overcome this problem, we study a CoPt/FePtC exchange coupled composite structure, where FePtC serves as the storage layer and CoPt (with higher Curie temperature, Tc) as the capping layer. CoPt remains ferromagnetic at near Tc of FePtC. Consequently, the counter exchange energy from CoPt would reduce the noise resulting from the adjacent grain interactions during the writing process. CoPt/FePtC bilayer samples with different thicknesses of CoPt were investigated. Our studies found that CoPt forms a continuous layer at a thickness of 6 nm and leads to considerable reduction in the saturation field and its distribution. Abstract

A plasmonic nanosensor (using gold nanorods) with inverse sensitivity is presented for circulating cell-free DNA quantification. The inverse sensitivity (i.e. the lower the analyte concentration, the higher the response intensity) is achieved by the unusual DNA concentration-dependent gold nanorod aggregation. This assay method can adjust the dynamic range by controlling the concentration of nanoparticles in solution.
