A 19-year-old man visited our hospital because of diarrhea and blood and liver dysfunction. Magnetic and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography revealed diffuse narrowing of the common biliary tract and intrahepatic biliary tract. A biopsy specimen from the narrowed area of the common biliary tract revealed IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC). Colonoscopy showed multiple aphthoid colitis. He was treated with corticosteroids, and the levels of hepatobiliary enzymes, IgG, and IgG4 gradually decreased. This is an extremely rare case of colitis in which the patient had a phenotype of sclerosing cholangitis similar to IgG4-SC, which was finally diagnosed as primary sclerosing cholangitis.

This paper describes the temporal characteristics of surface charging on a cylindrical insulator made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin or alumina ceramic. The insulator is subjected to a dc voltage step or to a trapezoidal voltage in vacuum. The charging is observed by using an electrostatic probe located at the surface of the cathode close to the triple junction where the insulator, cathode and vacuum meet. The probe signal shows a step increase associated with the charging. The interval between the voltage rise and the charging, which is defined as the delay time of charging in this paper, ranges from [10.sup.-5] s to 10 s depending on the material and the applied voltage. It also depends on the condition of the insulator-cathode interface, the electrical prestress and the surface roughness of the insulator. Among these factors, the surface roughness has the largest effect on the delay time. Two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation based on the secondary emission electron avalanche model has been performed to analyze the charging progress. During the delay period, positive charge accumulates on the surface of the insulator near the cathode, which further accelerates the charging.

Abstract Aims The CONtrolling NUTritional status (CONUT) score represents the nutritional status of patients with heart failure (HF). Although high CONUT scores on admission are associated with increased risks of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with HF, the impact of CONUT changes during hospitalization on their long‐term prognosis is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of CONUT score changes on the clinical outcomes of patients with HF after discharge. Methods and results This observational study included 1705 patients hospitalized with HF who were discharged alive. The patients were categorized depending on their CONUT scores at admission and discharge into persistently high, high at admission and normal at discharge, normal at admission and high at discharge, and persistently normal CONUT groups. The primary endpoint was a composite of CV death and readmission for HF after discharge. The primary endpoint occurred in 652 patients (38%) during the median 525 day follow‐up period. Abstract Background We investigated the performance improvement of physicians with varying levels of chest radiology experience when using a commercially available artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer-assisted detection (CAD) software to detect lung cancer nodules on chest radiographs from multiple vendors. Methods Chest radiographs and their corresponding chest CT were retrospectively collected from one institution between July 2017 and June 2018. Two author radiologists annotated pathologically proven lung cancer nodules on the chest radiographs while referencing CT. Eighteen readers (nine general physicians and nine radiologists) from nine institutions interpreted the chest radiographs. The readers interpreted the radiographs alone and then reinterpreted them referencing the CAD output. Suspected nodules were enclosed with a bounding box. These bounding boxes were judged correct if there was significant overlap with the ground truth, specifically, if the intersection over union was 0.3 or higher. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV of the readers’ assessments were calculated. Results In total, 312 chest radiographs were collected as a test dataset, including 59 malignant images (59 nodules of lung cancer) and 253 normal images. The model provided a modest boost to the reader’s sensitivity, particularly helping general physicians. The performance of general physicians was improved from 0.47 to 0.60 for sensitivity, from 0.96 to 0.97 for specificity, from 0.87 to 0.90 for accuracy, from 0.75 to 0.82 for PPV, and from 0.89 to 0.91 for NPV while the performance of radiologists was improved from 0.51 to 0.60 for sensitivity, from 0.96 to 0.96 for specificity, from 0.87 to 0.90 for accuracy, from 0.76 to 0.80 for PPV, and from 0.89 to 0.91 for NPV. The overall increase in the ratios of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV were 1.22 (1.14–1.30), 1.00 (1.00–1.01), 1.03 (1.02–1.04), 1.07 (1.03–1.11), and 1.02 (1.01–1.03) by using the CAD, respectively. Conclusion The AI-based CAD was able to improve the ability of physicians to detect nodules of lung cancer in chest radiographs. The use of a CAD model can indicate regions physicians may have overlooked during their initial assessment.

Histamine H1 receptor (H1R) is one of the targets of histamine in the nervous system and the peripheral tissues. Protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ) signaling is involved in histamine-induced upregulation of H1R gene expression in HeLa cells. Histamine also upregulates H1R gene expression in U-373 MG cells. However, the molecular signaling of this upregulation is still unclear. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism of histamine-induced H1R gene upregulation in U-373 MG cells. Histamine-induced H1R gene upregulation was inhibited by H1R antagonist d-chlorpheniramine, but not by ranitidine, ciproxifan, or JNJ77777120, and H2R, H3R, or H4R antagonists, respectively. Ro-31-8220 and Go6976 also suppressed this upregulation, however, the PKCδ selective inhibitor rottlerin and the PKCβ selective inhibitor Ly333531 did not. Time-course studies showed distinct kinetics of H1R gene upregulation in U-373 MG cells from that in HeLa cells. A promoter assay revealed that the promoter region responsible for H1R gene upregulation in U-373 MG cells was different from that of HeLa cells. These data suggest that the H1R-activated H1R gene expression signaling pathway in U-373 MG cells is different from that in HeLa cells, possibly by using different promoters. The involvement of PKCα also suggests that compounds that target PKCδ could work as peripheral type H1R-selective inhibitors without a sedative effect.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS) is the most common type of MS. However, the mechanisms of relapse and remission in MS have not been fully understood. While SJL mice immunized with proteolipid protein (PLP) develop relapsing–remitting experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (RR-EAE), we have recently observed that some of these mice were resistant to the active induction of relapsing EAE after initial clinical and histological symptoms of EAE with a severity similar to the relapsing EAE mice. To clarify the mechanism of relapsing, we examined myelin morphology during PLP139–151-induced RR-EAE in the SJL mice. While RR-EAE mice showed an increased EAE severity (relapse) with CNS inflammation, demyelination with abnormal myelin morphology in the spinal cord, the resistant mice exhibited a milder EAE phenotype with diminished relapse. Compared with the RR-EAE mice, the resistant mice showed less CNS inflammation, demyelination, and abnormalities of the myelin structure. In addition, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis with the osmium-maceration method displayed ultrastructural abnormalities of the myelin structure in the white matter of the RR-EAE spinal cord, but not in that of the resistant mice. While the intensity of myelin staining was reduced in the relapsing EAE spinal cord, immunohistochemistry and immunoblot analysis revealed that the 21.5 kDa isoform of degenerating myelin basic protein (MBP) was specifically induced in the relapsing EAE spinal cord. Taken together, the neuroinflammation-induced degenerating 21 kDa isoform of MBP sheds light on the development of abnormal myelin on the relapse of MS pathogenesis.

Abstract Determination of the primary tumor in periampullary region carcinomas can be difficult, and the pathological assessment and clinicopathological characteristics remain elusive. In this study, we investigated the current recognition and practices for periampullary region adenocarcinoma with an indeterminable origin among expert pathologists through a cognitive survey. Simultaneously, we analyzed a prospective collection of cases with an indeterminable primary tumor diagnosed from 2008 to 2018 to elucidate their clinicopathological features. All cases with pathological indeterminable primary tumors were reported and discussed in a clinicopathological conference to elucidate if it was possible to distinguish the primary tumor clinically and pathologically. From the cognitive survey, over 85% of the pathologists had experienced cases with indeterminable primary tumors; however, 70% of the cases was reported as pancreatic cancer without definitive grounds. Interpretation of the main tumor mass varied, and no standardized method was developed to determine the primary tumor. During a prospective study, 42 of the 392 periampullary carcinoma cases (10.7%) were considered as tumors with a pathological indeterminable origin. After the clinicopathological conferences, 21 (5.4%) remained indeterminable and were considered final indeterminable cases. Histological studies showed that the tumors spread along both the bile duct and main pancreatic duct; this was the most representative finding of the final indeterminable cases. This study is the first to elucidate and recognize the current clinicopathological features of periampullary region adenocarcinomas with an indeterminable origin. Adequate assessment of primary tumors in periampullary region carcinomas will help to optimize epidemiological data of pancreatic and bile duct cancer.

Background and Aims: It remains unclear whether obesity increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis C who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) with antiviral therapy. Methods: In this multicenter cohort study, we enrolled patients with chronic hepatitis C who achieved SVR with interferon (IFN)-based therapy (IFN group) or direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy (DAA group) between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 2018. The patients underwent regular surveillance for HCC. Cumulative incidence of and the risk factors for HCC development after SVR were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, respectively. Results: Among 2,055 patients (840 in the IFN group and 1,215 in the DAA group), 75 developed HCC (41 in the IFN group and 34 in the DAA group) during the mean observation period of 4.1 years. The incidence rates of HCC at 1, 2, and 3 years were 1.2, 1.9, and 3.0%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that in addition to older age, lower albumin level, lower platelet count, higher alpha-fetoprotein level, and absence of dyslipidemia, obesity (body mass index ≥25 kg/m2) and heavy alcohol consumption (≥60 g/day) were independent risk factors for HCC development, with adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 2.53 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51–4.25) and 2.56 (95% CI: 1.14–5.75), respectively. The adjusted HR was not significant between the 2 groups (DAA vs. IFN; HR 1.19, 95% CI: 0.61–2.33). Conclusions: Obesity and heavy alcohol consumption increased the risk of HCC development after SVR.

Abstract In this study, we investigate the flow of money among bank accounts possessed by firms in a region by employing an exhaustive list of all the bank transfers in a regional bank in Japan, to clarify how the network of money flow is related to the economic activities of the firms. The network statistics and structures are examined and shown to be similar to those of a nationwide production network. Specifically, the bowtie analysis indicates what we refer to as a “walnut” structure with core and upstream/downstream components. To quantify the location of an individual account in the network, we used the Hodge decomposition method and found that the Hodge potential of the account has a significant correlation to its position in the bowtie structure as well as to its net flow of incoming and outgoing money and links, namely the net demand/supply of individual accounts. In addition, we used non-negative matrix factorization to identify important factors underlying the entire flow of money; it can be interpreted that these factors are associated with regional economic activities. One factor has a feature whereby the remittance source is localized to the largest city in the region, while the destination is scattered. The other factors correspond to the economic activities specific to different local places. This study serves as a basis for further investigation on the relationship between money flow and economic activities of firms.

Abstract Histopathological diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) on endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) specimens has become the mainstay of preoperative pathological diagnosis. However, on EUS-FNB specimens, accurate histopathological evaluation is difficult due to low specimen volume with isolated cancer cells and high contamination of blood, inflammatory and digestive tract cells. In this study, we performed annotations for training sets by expert pancreatic pathologists and trained a deep learning model to assess PDAC on EUS-FNB of the pancreas in histopathological whole-slide images. We obtained a high receiver operator curve area under the curve of 0.984, accuracy of 0.9417, sensitivity of 0.9302 and specificity of 0.9706. Our model was able to accurately detect difficult cases of isolated and low volume cancer cells. If adopted as a supportive system in routine diagnosis of pancreatic EUS-FNB specimens, our model has the potential to aid pathologists diagnose difficult cases.

Noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus (LC) release noradrenaline (NA) that acts via volume transmission to activate extrasynaptic G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) in target cells throughout the brain. As the closest projection, the dorsal LC laterally adjoins the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN), in which proprioceptive primary sensory neurons innervating muscle spindles of jaw-closing muscles are exceptionally located. MTN neurons express α2-adrenergic receptors (α2-ARs) and display hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) currents (Ihs), which is downregulated by α2-AR activation. To quantify the activity-dependent outcome of volume transmission of NA from LC to MTN, we investigated how direct LC activation inhibits Ih in MTN neurons by performing dual whole-cell recordings from LC and MTN neurons. Repetition of 20 Hz spike-train evoked with 1-s current-pulse in LC neurons every 30 s resulted in a gradual decrease in Ih evoked every 30 s, revealing a Hill-type relationship between the number of spike-trains in LC neurons and the degree of Ih inhibition in MTN neurons. On the other hand, when microstimulation was applied in LC every 30 s, an LC neuron repeatedly displayed a transient higher-frequency firing followed by a tonic firing at 5–10 Hz for 30 s. This subsequently caused a similar Hill-type inhibition of Ih in the simultaneously recorded MTN neuron, but with a smaller Hill coefficient, suggesting a lower signal transduction efficacy. In contrast, 20 Hz activity induced by a 1-s pulse applied every 5–10 s caused only a transient facilitation of Ih inhibition followed by a forced termination of Ih inhibition. Thus, the three modes of LC activities modulated the volume transmission to activate α2-adrenergic GPCR to differentially inhibit Ih in MTN neurons.

Background: G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) regulate the pathological and physiological functions of the heart. GPCR antagonists are widely used in the treatment of chronic heart failure. Despite therapeutic advances in the treatments for cardiovascular diseases, heart failure is a major clinical health problem, with significant mortality and morbidity. Corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 2 (CRHR2) is highly expressed in cardiomyocytes, and cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of the genes encoding CRHR2 suppresses pressure overload-induced cardiac dysfunction. This suggests that the negative modulation of CRHR2 may prevent the progression of heart failure. However, there are no systemic drugs against CRHR2. Findings: We developed a novel, oral, small molecule antagonist of CRHR2, RQ-00490721, to investigate the inhibition of CRHR2 as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of heart failure. In vitro, RQ-00490721 decreased CRHR2 agonist-induced 3′, 5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production. In vivo, RQ-00490721 showed sufficient oral absorption and better distribution to peripheral organs than to the central nervous system. Oral administration of RQ-00490721 inhibited the CRHR2 agonist-induced phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) in the heart, which regulates a transcription activator involved in heart failure. RQ-00490721 administration was not found to affect basal heart function in mice but protected them from pressure overload-induced cardiac dysfunction. Interpretation: Our results suggest that RQ-00490721 is a promising agent for use in the treatment of chronic heart failure.

With the goal of developing a new type of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) agent, selective internalisation of submicrometer boron carbide spherical particles into cancer cells via surface transferrin conjugation is demonstrated and confirmed in vitro and in vivo. Herein, negatively charged, spherical, submicrometer boron carbide (B4C) particles were coated with positively charged poly-L-lysine and negatively charged poly-γ-glutamic acid; the particles were subsequently conjugated with transferrin. It was confirmed in vitro and in vivo by confocal laser scanning microscopy and transmission electron microscopy that the coated particles interacted with transferrin receptors that were highly expressed on the surface of cancer cells, endocytosed by tumour cells, and transferred to the proximity of the nucleus. The submicrometer size of the particles provided stronger interaction between transferrin and transferrin receptors and hence resulted in more efficient internalisation than that obtained using nanoparticles. This method might be effective for the selective internalisation of large submicrometer particles for high therapeutic effects due to the large particle size, but with small particle dosages.

A 71-year-old woman presented to a nearby hospital with an occipital scalp ulcer with exudate. Thoracoabdominal enhanced computed tomography (CT) was performed due to suspected cancer. The imaging results showed tumors in the pancreatic tail and at multiple sites in the lung, whereupon she was referred to our hospital for further investigation. Histological analysis of the occipital scalp ulcer and the pancreatic tumor led to the diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma with cutaneous metastasis and multiple lung metastases. Combination chemotherapy (gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel) was started, and about 4 months later the patient experienced right lower back pain. Abdominal CT showed partial sclerosis of the right iliac bone and multiple spinal lesions, which were diagnosed as multiple bone metastases. Narcotic analgesia was started for the right lower back pain. Since then, FOLFIRINOX has been introduced as second-line chemotherapy against tumor growth, and treatment has been ongoing for 10 months since the initial chemotherapy. Pancreatic cancer is a rapidly growing cancer and can show early metastasis to other organs, lymph node metastasis, and peritoneal dissemination; therefore, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer is very poor. Cutaneous metastasis from pancreatic cancer is rare, and only a few cases have been reported. Here, we report an unusual case of pancreatic adenocarcinoma with cutaneous metastasis and multiple lung and bone metastases.

Abstract Background Synchronous and asynchronous multiple cancers have become more pervasive in recent years despite advances in medical technologies. However, there have been only six cases (including the present case) that underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreas head cancer following surgery for esophageal cancer. PD for treating pancreas head cancer is extremely challenging; thus, the confirmation of vessel variation and selection of surgical procedures are vital. Case presentation The patient was a 78-year-old Japanese male who was synchronously diagnosed with esophageal and cecal cancer 7 years previously at our hospital. He was admitted with densely stained and jaundiced urine and presented no remarkable family medical history. Following various examinations, surgery was performed due to the diagnosis of distal cholangiocarcinoma (pancreatic head cancer). Since the tumor was located far from the gastroduodenal artery (GDA) and no significant lymph node metastases could be found, subtotal stomach-preserving PD was performed instead of the resection of GDA with the right gastroepiploic artery (RGEA) for gastric tube blood flow preservation. The common hepatic artery (CHA) and GDA were confirmed, and RGEA diverged from GDA was identified. Subsequently, their respective tapings were preserved. The right gastric artery (RGA) was identified, taped, and preserved considering the gastric tube blood flow. The inflow area of the right gastroepiploic vein (RGEV) through gastric colic vein trunk in the superior mesenteric vein was exposed and preserved as the outflow of gastric tube blood flow. PD was completed without any complications on the shade of the gastric tube. Conclusions This case report describes successfully preserved gastric blood flow without the resection of GDA, RGEA, RGEV, or RGA. To preserve the gastric tube, GDA inflow, RGEA, RGA, and RGEV outflow should be preserved if possible. When performing PD after tube reconstruction, it is essential to confirm the relative positions of the blood vessel, blood flow, and tumor through three-dimensional computed tomography angiography before surgery and to consider the balance between the invasiveness and optimal curability of the surgery.

Summary: Phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho) is a major membrane phospholipid synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum. Here, we provide a protocol using electron microscopy to localize PtdCho that is newly synthesized by the Kennedy pathway in yeast cells. The protocol consists of the administration of a clickable alkyne-containing choline analog to cells, quick-freezing, freeze-fracture replica preparation, conjugation of biotin-azide by click chemical reaction, and immunogold labeling. This protocol can be used to determine quantitatively to which membrane leaflets newly synthesized PtdCho is incorporated.For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Orii et al. Interactions between the client (Cl) and therapist (Th) evolve therapeutic relationships in psychotherapy. An interpersonal link or therapeutic space is implicitly developed, wherein certain important elements are expressed and shared. However, neural basis of psychotherapy, especially of non-verbal modalities, have scarcely been explored. Therefore, we examined the neural backgrounds of such therapeutic alliances during sandplay, a powerful art/play therapy technique. Real-time and simultaneous measurement of hemodynamics was conducted in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of Cl-Th pairs participating in sandplay and subsequent interview sessions through multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy. As sandplay is highly individualized, and no two sessions and products (sandtrays) are the same, we expected variation in interactive patterns in the Cl–Th pairs. Nevertheless, we observed a statistically significant correlation between the spatio-temporal patterns in signals produced by the homologous regions of the brains. During the sandplay condition, significant correlations were obtained in the lateral PFC and frontopolar (FP) regions in the real Cl-Th pairs. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed in the FP region for the interview condition. The correlations found in our study were explained as a “remote” synchronization (i.e., unconnected peripheral oscillators synchronizing through a hub maintaining free desynchronized dynamics) between two subjects in a pair, possibly representing the neural foundation of empathy, which arises commonly in sandplay therapy (ST).

Summary:. Patients with severe group A Streptococcus (GAS) induced necrotizing soft tissue infection sometimes develop Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which is a life-threatening condition with an extremely high fatality rate. Obtaining survival is the most important goal; however, an early diagnosis for debridement surgery and quick granulation formation for skin grafting surgery can better preserve the extremity functions. The patient was a 47-year-old man with a history of atopic dermatitis who presented with GAS-induced necrotizing soft tissue infection in his left lower extremity. His vital signs indicated shock, and he was diagnosed with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Emergency surgery was performed with his body pressure maintained with noradrenaline. Intraoperatively, rapid antigen detection tests (RADTs) were negative in the medial thigh and positive in the lower leg, which helped in decision-making regarding the area of aggressive debridement surgery. The wound culture results matched the intraoperative rapid antigen detection test results. A collagen/gelatin sponge with the sustained release of basic fibroblast growth factor was used as an artificial dermis before skin grafting. Excellent granulation was obtained, and skin grafting surgery was performed on the 11th day after collagen/gelatin sponge placement. He was discharged home on the 42nd day with normal lower extremity functions. First, an intraoperative diagnosis using GAS-rapid antigen detection tests with an appropriate sampling method from small incisions avoided excessive surgical debridement. Second, collagen/gelatin sponge with the sustained release of basic fibroblast growth factor promoted quick granulation tissue formation for wound bed preparation. These efforts resulted in the successful less-invasive treatment of a patient with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome caused by GAS-induced necrotizing soft tissue infection.

ABSTRACT Mycoplasma mobile, a fish pathogen, exhibits gliding motility using ATP hydrolysis on solid surfaces, including animal cells. The gliding machinery can be divided into surface and internal structures. The internal structure of the motor is composed of 28 so-called “chains” that are each composed of 17 repeating protein units called “particles.” These proteins include homologs of the catalytic α and β subunits of F1-ATPase. In this study, we isolated the particles and determined their structures using negative-staining electron microscopy and high-speed atomic force microscopy. The isolated particles were composed of five proteins, MMOB1660 (α-subunit homolog), -1670 (β-subunit homolog), -1630, -1620, and -4530, and showed ATP hydrolyzing activity. The two-dimensional (2D) structure, with dimensions of 35 and 26 nm, showed a dimer of hexameric ring approximately 12 nm in diameter, resembling F1-ATPase catalytic (αβ)3. We isolated the F1-like ATPase unit, which is composed of MMOB1660, -1670, and -1630. Furthermore, we isolated the chain and analyzed the three-dimensional (3D) structure, showing that dimers of mushroom-like structures resembling F1-ATPase were connected and aligned along the dimer axis at 31-nm intervals. An atomic model of F1-ATPase catalytic (αβ)3 from Bacillus PS3 was successfully fitted to each hexameric ring of the mushroom-like structure. These results suggest that the motor for M. mobile gliding shares an evolutionary origin with F1-ATPase. Based on the obtained structure, we propose possible force transmission processes in the gliding mechanism. IMPORTANCE F1Fo-ATPase, a rotary ATPase, is widespread in the membranes of mitochondria, chloroplasts, and bacteria and converts ATP energy with a proton motive force across the membrane by its physical rotation. Homologous protein complexes play roles in ion and protein transport. Mycoplasma mobile, a pathogenic bacterium, was recently suggested to have a special motility system evolutionarily derived from F1-ATPase. The present study isolated the protein complex from Mycoplasma cells and supported this conclusion by clarifying the detailed structures containing common and novel features as F1-ATPase relatives.

The wide applicability of titanium (Ti) has prompted the analysis to improve its mechanical strength through the addition of different alloying elements. Among these, Ti materials with pre-mixed pure Ti and titanium nitride (TiN) powders as the starting materials have exhibited improved mechanical properties and tribological performance. In this study, the tribological properties of Ti matrix composites with ring-shaped TiN dispersoids were evaluated. The materials were fabricated from pre-mixed pure Ti powder and core–shell structured Ti–(N) powder, which were prepared by heat treatment at 1273 K under N2 gas. The tribological behavior of the Ti–TiN composites was studied by varying the applied load using a ball-on-disk wear test under oil lubrication conditions. The initial familiarity period of the Ti–TiN composites decreased. Subsequently, compared to the pure Ti specimen employed as a reference material, the friction coefficient was significantly lower and more stable. This is attributed to the ring-shaped, hard TiN dispersoids, which prevented the adhesion phenomenon and improved the oil film formability owing to the increase in microhardness and abrasive wear resistance of the nitrogen solid solution in the core region.

Distribution and electrophysiological responses of contact chemosensilla were examined in the Aristolochiaceae-feeding butterfly Atrophaneuraalcinous. In adult butterflies, tarsal contact chemosensilla of the foreleg were classified into two groups based on length: long- and short-type sensilla. Long-type sensilla were distributed much more widely in females than in males, whereas short-type sensilla were found at the edge of the tarsi in a similar manner in both sexes. Taste responses of the long- and short-type sensilla to methanol extracts of Aristolochia debilis and Citrus spp. were recorded. Aristolochia debilis extracts evoked spikes with different amplitudes, whereas Citrus spp. extracts evoked spikes with a single amplitude in the long-type sensilla. Short-type sensilla did not respond to either extract. Moreover, we recorded responses to different concentrations of sucrose and NaCl. Results suggest that adult butterflies can discriminate the taste of host plant components from other chemicals using long-type sensilla during oviposition and may recognize diets containing sugar and salts during feeding using short-type sensilla. In the larval mouthparts, there were lateral and medial styloconic sensilla on the maxillary galea and epipharyngeal sensillum on the epipharynx. Electrophysiological responses of these sensilla suggest that larvae can discriminate between host plant compounds.

Abstract Paraganglioma is a very rare extraadrenal nonepithelial tumor. The number of cases of laparoscopic surgery in Paraganglioma is small and controversial. This study encountered a case of successful transperitoneal laparoscopic surgery for a 56‐mm paraganglioma in a 53‐year‐old female. Moreover, previous reports on laparoscopic surgery for paraganglioma are reviewed.
