Abstract Background The main etiology of constrictive pericarditis (CP) has changed from tuberculosis to therapeutic mediastinal radiation and cardiac surgery. Occult constrictive pericardial disease (OCPD) is a covert disease in which CP is manifested in a condition of volume overload. Case presentation A 60-year-old patient with a history of thoracic radiation therapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (40 years earlier) was transferred to our hospital for treatment of repeated congestive heart failure. For a preoperative hemodynamic study, pre-hydration with intravenous normal saline (50 mL/hour) was used to manifest the pericardial disease and prevent contrast-induced nephropathy. The hemodynamic study showed a right ventricular dip-plateau pattern and discordance of right and left ventricular systolic pressures during inspiration, which was not seen in the volume-controlled state. These responses were concordant with OCPD. A pericardiectomy, aortic valve replacement, and mitral and tricuspid valve repair were performed. Postoperatively, the heart failure was controlled with standard medication. Conclusions This case revealed a volume-induced change in hemodynamics in OCPD with severe combined valvular heart disease, which suggests the importance of considering OCPD in patients who had undergone radiation therapy 40 years before.

This study explores the association between lifestyle behavior and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in the general Japanese population. Japanese residents aged ≥40 years undergoing a national health checkup in Kanazawa City were included. We hypothesized that better lifestyle behavior is associated with lower incidence of AF. Lifestyle behavior was evaluated by the total cardiovascular health (CVH) score (0 = poor to 14 = ideal), calculated as the sum of the individual scores on seven modifiable risk factors: smoking status, physical activity, obesity, patterns of eating schedule, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and blood glucose. The association between CVH and incident AF was assessed, adjusting for other factors. A total of 37,523 participants (mean age 72.3 ± 9.6 years, 36.8% men, and mean total CVH score 9 ± 1) were analyzed. During the median follow-up period of 5 years, 703 cases of incident AF were observed. Using a low CVH score as a reference, the upper group (ideal CVH group) had a significantly lower risk of incident AF (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.79, 95% confidence interval 0.65–0.96, p = 0.02), especially among those aged p = 0.02). Recently, cyber-risks in modern intelligent vehicles have become concerns to society. First, carry-in devices, such as smart-phones and USB-memory-devices used outside of vehicles expose vehicles to various cyber-attacks from the external IT (Information Technology) world. Next, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) which provide position information to many valuable functions have vulnerabilities to jamming and spoofing. Finally, emerging vehicle-to-vehicle communication poses security challenges, because of its unique communication schema where all neighboring vehicles exchange data within a short duration. In this report, we examine these vulnerabilities’ impact on vehicle cyber-security and introduce various countermeasures against these vulnerabilities in the US.

Abstract A 66-year-old man with thrombocytosis was brought to our hospital to undergo removal of a left ventricular thrombus. He had developed cerebral infarction 6 days before presenting to the hospital and suffered from right incomplete hemiparalysis. Blood tests on admission revealed his platelet count to be 124.3 × 104/μl. The urgent removal operation was performed under general anesthesia. For carrying out extracorporeal circulation (ECC), approximately three times as much heparin as expected was needed, as well as antithrombin III (AT III) administration. This met the definition of heparin resistance. The thrombus was removed and surgical left ventricular reconstruction was performed. Aspirin and warfarin were initiated on postoperative day 5. A bone marrow biopsy was performed on postoperative day 8, which revealed hypercellular marrow with megakaryocyte proliferation, and the patient was diagnosed as having essential thrombocythemia (ET). Although hydroxycarbamide administration started on postoperative day 10, his platelet count increased to 290.7 × 104/μl on postoperative day 13. The counts descended gradually, and on postoperative day 34, his platelet count reached the normal range and he was discharged from the hospital. In the perioperative period, his new neurologic abnormality did not appear. Addition of heparin, administration of AT III, and coating the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit with heparin or macromolecular polymer prevented clot formation and enabled safe ECC in a patient with ET and a high platelet count.

Aim: The objective was to compare the density and degranulation of mast cells on specimens obtained from individuals diagnosed with gingivitis or chronic periodontitis who were either non-HIV-infected or HIV-infected patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Methods: Gingival samples were taken from 16 non-HIV-infected individuals and 17 HIV-infected individuals diagnosed with gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. The samples were processed and stained with 0.3 percent o-toluidine blue. Densities (cells/mm²) and percentages of intact and degranulated mast cells were obtained. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed in the mast cell density and the percentage of degranulated mast cells between non-HIV-infected and HIV-infected individuals diagnosed with gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. Mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate was weakly correlated with the percentage of mast cells degranulated for both groups. Conclusions: There are no differences of the density and degranulation of mast cells in gingival tissue between non-HIV-infected and HIV-infected patients undergoing HAART, both groups with diagnosis of gingivitis or chronic periodontitis. This may be a result of the recovery of the immunologic system by HAART treatment.

Objectives: Paclitaxel is a highly effective antitumor agent with notable adverse events, including hypersensitivity reactions, peripheral neuropathy, arthralgia, myalgias, and neutropenia. Solvent-based paclitaxel causes severe allergic, hypersensitivity, and anaphylactic reactions. Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel was recently developed and provides an advantage over solvent-based paclitaxel in avoiding solvent/surfactant-related adverse events. The aim of this study was to assess the adverse event profiles of solvent-based paclitaxel and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel formulations using data from the spontaneous adverse event reporting system of the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database. Methods: This study relied on Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities preferred terms and standardized queries, and calculated the reporting ratio and reporting odds ratios of paclitaxel formulations. Results: Of 8,867,135 reports recorded in the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database from January 2004 to December 2016, 3469 and 4447 adverse events corresponded to solvent-based paclitaxel and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel, respectively. Reporting odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for anaphylactic reaction (standardized MedDRA query code: 20000021) associated with the use of solvent-based paclitaxel and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel were 1.69 (1.56–1.84) and 0.75 (0.68–0.83), respectively. Reporting odds ratio signal for anaphylactic reaction was not detected for nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel. Reporting odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for acute renal failure (standardized MedDRA query code: 20000003) associated with the use of solvent-based paclitaxel and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel were 0.75 (0.58–0.98) and 1.60 (1.37–1.89), respectively. Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate the adverse event profile of nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel using US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System data. Considering that the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database does not allow to infer causality or risk ranking, the different reporting frequencies of anaphylactic reaction and acute renal failure between solvent-based paclitaxel and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel must be further investigated via analytical observational research.

Zn-Ni ferrite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by coprecipitation method. The samples were annealed at various temperatures, i.e., 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C. The nanoparticles have the mixed spinel phase structure as confirmed by the X-ray diffraction patterns. The crystallite size was 15.1 nm and increased to 25.1 nm after annealing at 1000 °C. Transmission electron microscope images showed that the annealed sample exhibited better dispersion and grain boundaries compared to the as-prepared sample. Fourier transform infra-red spectra showed the existence of vibrations at 378 cm ^−1 and 555 cm ^−1 , confirming bonding for mixed spinel ferrites. The hysteresis measurement by using vibrating sample magnetometer confirmed that the sample possessed soft magnetic properties with a coercivity of 45 Oe and increased after annealing. The saturation magnetization of the as-prepared sample was 11 emu g ^−1 , and increased to 58 emu g ^−1 after annealing at a temperature of 800 and 1000 °C. The specific absorption rate (SAR) with an alternating current magnetic field (50 Hz and 100 Oe) of Zn-Ni ferrite before and after annealing (at 800 °C) was 63.7 and 92.4 mW g ^−1 , respectively. The results showed that annealing temperature has a significant role in determining the microstructural, the magnetic properties and the SAR of the nanoparticles.

Magnetic core–shell CoFe _2 O _4 @ZnO nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by using coprecipitation method to provide easy separated nanomaterials and high photocatalytic activity performance. Core–shell nanoparticles with various CoFe _2 O _4 -to-ZnO molar ratio (1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5) have been investigated over x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. XRD spectra confirm the cubic spinel ferrite phase structure of CoFe _2 O _4 and the hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO. The crystallite size is found within the range of 14.9–20.6 nm. TEM measurement confirms the good crystallinity of the samples. The magnetic hysteresis shows that CoFe _2 O _4 @ZnO has high saturation magnetization of about 30 emu g ^−1 and coercivity of about 300 Oe. Photocatalytic investigation was carried out using methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation. Our result yields the enhancement of MB degradation as ZnO content increases. The maximum photodegradation achieved by the core–shell nanoparticles is 57.2%, 60.5%, 65.5%, and 78.3% for molar ratio of 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5, respectively. The enhancement of MB degradation can be attributed to the formation of internal structure between CoFe _2 O _4 and ZnO in the form of heterojunction structure. The magnetic properties of core–shell lead to the easy separation between the magnetic core–shell nanoparticles and the final degraded solution by permanent magnet.

Objectives: Platinum compounds cause several adverse events, such as nephrotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, myelosuppression, ototoxicity, and neurotoxicity. We evaluated the incidence of renal impairment as adverse events are related to the administration of platinum compounds using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database. Methods: We analyzed adverse events associated with the use of platinum compounds reported from April 2004 to November 2016. The reporting odds ratio at 95% confidence interval was used to detect the signal for each renal impairment incidence. We evaluated the time-to-onset profile of renal impairment and assessed the hazard type using Weibull shape parameter and used the applied association rule mining technique to discover undetected relationships such as possible risk factor. Results: In total, 430,587 reports in the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database were analyzed. The reporting odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for renal impairment resulting from the use of cisplatin, oxaliplatin, carboplatin, and nedaplatin were 2.7 (2.5–3.0), 0.6 (0.5–0.7), 0.8 (0.7–1.0), and 1.3 (0.8–2.1), respectively. The lower limit of the reporting odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for cisplatin was >1. A selective separation and recycling system for metal ions was developed by homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction (HoLLE) using a fluorosurfactant. Sixty-two different elemental ions (e.g., Ag, Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Ga, Gd, Ge, Hf, Hg, Ho, In, Ir, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Nb, Nd, Ni, Os, P, Pb, Pd, Pr, Pt, Re, Rh, Ru, Sb, Sc, Se, Si, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Ti, Tl, Tm, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn, and Zr) were examined. By changing pH from a neutral or alkaline solution (pH ≥ 6.5) to that of an acidic solution (pH < 4.0), gallium, zirconium, palladium, silver, platinum, and rare earth elements were extracted at >90% efficiency into a sedimented Zonyl FSA® (CF3(CF2)n(CH2)2S(CH2)2COOH, n = 6–8) liquid phase. Moreover, all rare earth elements were obtained with superior extraction and stripping percentages. In the recycling of rare earth elements, the sedimented phase was maintained using a filter along with a mixed solution of THF and 1 M sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. The Zonyl FSA® was filtrated and the rare earth elements were recovered on the filter as a hydroxide. Furthermore, the filtrated Zonyl FSA was reusable by conditioning the subject pH.

We have successfully fabricated planar patterned CrPt3 ordered L12 alloy films by Kr+ ion irradiation. Planar-patterned CrPt3 nanodots with various bit sizes from 200 nm to 50 nm were successfully fabricated by 30 keV Kr+ ion irradiation at a dose of 2 × 1014 ions/cm2, where e-beam lithography was used for creating the resist mask. We have confirmed that the nanofabrication process didn’t change the magnetic properties of CrPt3 ordered L12 alloy films. As-prepared film exhibited perpendicular hysteresis loop with the coercivity of 5.5 kOe. The typical perpendicular maze domain structure with the stripe structure was clearly seen in as-prepared CrPt3 film. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images of patterned CrPt3 nanodots indicated that each un-irradiated bit consists of localized perpendicular magnetic domain structures, which corresponds to perpendicular magnetization direction. Nanodots with bit size ⩽80 nm show either dark or bright contrast, suggesting single domain structure. No magnetic contrast in irradiated space is due to the suppressing of the magnetization by Kr+ ion irradiation. Keywords: Ordered L12 alloy films, CrPt3, Ion irradiation, Planar patterned media

Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts based on transition metal-nitrogen-carbon nanomaterials have been studied by a combination of ex situ and in situ synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy techniques; high-resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM); Mößbauer spectroscopy combined with electrochemical methods and Density Functional Theory (DFT) modeling/theoretical approaches. The main objective of this study was to correlate the HO2− generation with the chemical nature and surface availability of active sites in iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts derived by sacrificial support method (SSM). These nanomaterials present a carbonaceous matrix with nitrogen-doped sites and atomically dispersed and; in some cases; iron and nanoparticles embedded in the carbonaceous matrix. Fe-N-C oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts were synthesized by varying several synthetic parameters to obtain nanomaterials with different composition and morphology. Combining spectroscopy, microscopy and electrochemical reactivity allowed the building of structure-to-properties correlations which demonstrate the contributions of these moieties to the catalyst activity, and mechanistically assign the active sites to individual reaction steps. Associated with Fe-Nx motive and the presence of Fe metallic particles in the electrocatalysts showed the clear differences in the variation of composition; processing and treatment conditions of SSM. From the results of material characterization; catalytic activity and theoretical studies; Fe metallic particles (coated with carbon) are main contributors into the HO2− generation.

BackgroundLow contact force and force–time integral (FTI) during catheter ablation are associated with ineffective lesion formation, whereas excessively high contact force and FTI may increase the risk of complications. We sought to evaluate the optimal FTI for pulmonary vein (PV) isolation based on atrial wall thickness under the ablation line. Methods and ResultsContact force parameters and FTI during anatomical ipsilateral PV isolation for atrial fibrillation and atrial wall thickness were assessed retrospectively in 59 consecutive patients for their first PV isolation procedure. The PV antrum was divided into 8 segments, and the wall thickness of each segment under the ablation line was determined using multidetector computed tomography. The FTI for each ablation point was divided by the wall thickness of the PV antrum segment where each point was located to obtain FTI/wall thickness. In total, 5335 radiofrequency applications were delivered, and 85 gaps in PV isolation ablation lines and 15 dormant conductions induced by adenosine were detected. The gaps or dormant conductions were significantly associated with low contact force, radiofrequency duration, FTI, and FTI/wall thickness. The aim of this study was to assess and compare quantitatively the presence of S100+ Langerhans cells (LC) by immunochemistry techniques in HIV+ and HIV- gingivitis and periodontitis subjects. Additionally, it aimed to evaluate the correlation among densities of these cells with CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and viral load levels in HIV+ subjects, all using Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The samples were allocated into four groups: 1) 15 subjects with moderate chronic periodontitis (MCP), HIV+; 2) 15 subjects with MCP, HIV-; 3) 10 subjects with gingivitis (G), HIV+; and 4) 10 subjects with G, HIV-. The S100+ cells were assessed in the pocket epithelium, gingival epithelium, and lamina propria. A statistically significant increase of total S100+ cells in HIV+ periodontitis subjects was observed in relation to HIV- periodontitis subjects. No increase of S100+ cells with increased inflammation was observed. No statistically significant correlation among S100+ cells and blood levels of CD4, CD8, and viral load was observed. In conclusion, the use of HAART can aid in achieving viral loads, and it is suggested that it may prevent the destruction of the LC.

Gingival recession may cause cosmetic changes and root hypersensitivity, which can alter mastication and tooth brushing, and thus contribute to the progression of periodontal disease. Treatment of gingival recessions with subepithelial conjunctive tissue grafting is very predictable due to its bilaminar nature. However, some factors may influence the success of the procedure, among them: selection of the lesion; characteristics of the defect with regard to the depth and width of the recession, the deeper and wider the recession, the worse the prognosis, and also the presence of restorations. Furthermore, it is necessary to control the etiologic factors of recessions, such as inflammation and traumatic brushing, control of systemic factors, occlusal trauma, smoking and harmful habits, technical considerations and asepsis. The success of the procedure must be based on observing the possible factors that might influence their predictability, as well as respecting the basic principles of mucogingival surgery.

Selenoprotein P (SeP), a liver-derived secretory protein, functions as a selenium supply protein in the body. SeP has been reported to be associated with insulin resistance in humans through serial analysis of gene expression. Recently, SeP has been found to inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor-stimulated cell proliferation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and impair angiogenesis in a mouse hind limb model. In this study, the role of SeP in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury has been investigated. SeP knockout (KO) and littermate wild-type (WT) mice were subjected to 30 min of myocardial ischemia followed by 24 h of reperfusion. The myocardial infarct area/area at risk (IA/AAR), evaluated using Evans blue (EB) and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, was significantly smaller in SeP KO mice than in WT mice. The number of terminal de-oxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive nuclei was significantly lower in SeP KO mice than in WT mice. In addition, caspase-3 activation was reduced in SeP KO mice compared to that in WT mice. Furthermore, phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt and Erk levels were examined for the reperfusion injury salvage kinase (RISK) pathway. Interestingly, SeP KO significantly increased the phosphorylation of IGF-1, Akt, and Erk compared to that in WT mice after I/R. Finally, I/R-induced myocardial IA/AAR was significantly increased in SeP KO mice overexpressing SeP in the liver compared to other SeP KO mice. These results, together, suggest that inhibition of SeP protects the heart from I/R injury through upregulation of the RISK pathway.

In this paper, we propose the novel directional Wavelet Transform based on the Complex Discrete Wavelet Transform(CDWT). The CDWT is one of the Wavelet Transform and widely used as space-frequency analysis method for the signal and the image. The CDWT decomposes the image into directional components from the frequency analysis. And then, we can get the border, discontinuities and edges in the image. This property is called Directional Selection and this property is expected to give us shape information and geometric features. But, previous Directional Selection only offers the six directional components and features. Thus we firstly design the directional filter that can extract many directional feature rather than previous one. Secondly we propose the novel directional Wavelet Transform combining with previous CDWT and designed directional filters. Finally, we apply the proposed method into medical image processing.

Peer-to-peer has entered the public limelight over the last few years. Several research projects are underway on peer-to-peer technologies, but no definitive conclusion is currently available. Compared with traditional Internet technologies, peer-to-peer has the potential to realize highly scalable, extensible, and efficient distributed applications. This is because its basic functions realize resource discovery, resource sharing, and load balancing in a highly distributed manner. An easy prediction is the emergence of an environment in which many sensors, people, and many different kinds of objects exist, move, and communicate with one another. Peer-to-peer is one of the most important and suitable technologies for such networking since it supports discovery mechanisms, simple one-to-one communication between devices, free and extensible distribution of resources, and distributed search to handle the enormous number of resources. The purpose of this study is to explore a universal peer-to-peer network architecture that will allow various devices to communicate with one another across various networks. We have been designing architecture and protocols for realizing peer-to-peer networking among various devices. We are currently designing APIs that are available for various peer-to-peer applications and are implementing a prototype called "Jupiter" as a peer-to-peer networking platform over heterogeneous networks.

Trata-se de um estudo seccional transversal em uma comunidade da raça negra. A amostra foi constituída por 104 indivíduos acima de 13 anos de idade, sendo 63 mulheres e 41 homens. Foram examinados todos os dentes presentes, com exceção dos terceiros molares. Cada dente foi sondado em seis sítios para registrar a profundidade de sondagem e a perda de inserção e em quatro sítios para registrar sangramento após sondagem e presença de cálculo. Observou-se que, do total dos dentados, o sangramento à sondagem foi detectado em 97,9%, a profundidade de sondagem (PS) > 4mm foi observada em 43,3%, a perda de inserção (PI) > 4mm verificou-se em 63,5% e em 81,2% observou-se a presença de cálculo. De 46 a 60 anos, identificou-se uma PI de 8,3mm (±4,27), a maior média, e também PS de 4,6mm (±3,5). A doença acometeu 9,6% dos participantes em sua forma grave (PS > 7), valor dentro dos padrões conhecidos no Brasil e no mundo, não havendo um diferencial por ser um povo negro. Faixa etária, escolaridade e uso de tabaco foram indicadores de risco relacionados com a doença.This was a cross-sectional study on periodontal disease in a black community in Brazil. The sample consisted of 104 individuals over 13 years of age (63 females and 41 males). All teeth were examined except the third molars. Six sites per tooth were analyzed in order to measure pocket depth and clinical loss of attachment. Four sites per tooth were used to measure bleeding on probing and presence of calculus. It was observed that bleeding on probing occurred in 97.9% of the total of individuals with teeth, with probing depth > 4mm in 43.3% and clinical attachment loss in 63.5%. Calculus was detected in 81.2% of the sample. In the study, individuals 46 to 60 years of age showed the highest mean clinical attachment loss, 8.3mm (± 4.27), and a probing depth of 4.6mm (± 3.5). Prevalence rate for periodontal disease in this community was similar to rates elsewhere in Brazil and the world, i.e., 9.6% for the severe form. Age, schooling, and tobacco use were identified as risk indicators statistically associated with periodontal disease.

The regulation mechanism of the interrelation between neuropeptides and their metabolizing enzymes in in vivo tissues is still not clear. In the present report, we attempted to measure the levels of neuropeptides and their enzymes in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and striatum of the rat that had been bilaterally lesioned by the infusion of ibotenic acid or amyloid β-peptide 25 – 35 (Aβ25 – 35) into the nucleus basalis magnocellularis. In the drug-treated rats, at two weeks after the infusion, the decrease of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SS-LI) and the increase of cholecystokinin-8S-LI were found in some brain regions relative to vehicle-treated rats. The immunoreactivities of endopeptidase 24.15 and puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase and the leucine aminopeptidase- and aminopeptidase B-like enzyme activities did not change in the three brain regions, suggesting that the levels of those peptide-degrading enzymes do not correlate with the changes of the neuropeptide levels. The decrease of subtilisin-like proprotein convertase (SPC)-like enzyme activity was found in the hippocampus of the Aβ25 – 35-treated rats. The SS mRNA level decreased in the hippocampus in parallel with decreases in the SS-LI level and SPC-like enzyme activity. The present data indicate that some of the neuropeptide-processing enzymes may contribute to the control of neuropeptide levels.

We have developed the cooling unit for high-density packaging ICT racks by using the boiling heat transfer with the concept of transporting a heat generated from CPU into the outdoor atmosphere directly without exposure to air in the computer room. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the cooling and power saving performance of the cooling unit using the low height type thermosyhon installed in the 1U server and the heat exchanger cooled by the water from the outdoor chiller unit. First, we clarified some factors (tilt angle, flow passage length and cross sectional area of thermosyhon) influencing the cooling performance. Then we examined the power saving performance of this cooling system during operating 32 CPUs in the ICT rack and compared to the conventional system using the computer room air conditioner.

Trata-se de um estudo seccional transversal em uma comunidade da raça negra. A amostra foi constituída por 104 indivíduos acima de 13 anos de idade, sendo 63 mulheres e 41 homens. Foram examinados todos os dentes presentes, com exceção dos terceiros molares. Cada dente foi sondado em seis sítios para registrar a profundidade de sondagem e a perda de inserção e em quatro sítios para registrar sangramento após sondagem e presença de cálculo. Observou-se que, do total dos dentados, o sangramento à sondagem foi detectado em 97,9%, a profundidade de sondagem (PS) > 4mm foi observada em 43,3%, a perda de inserção (PI) > 4mm verificou-se em 63,5% e em 81,2% observou-se a presença de cálculo. De 46 a 60 anos, identificou-se uma PI de 8,3mm (±4,27), a maior média, e também PS de 4,6mm (±3,5). A doença acometeu 9,6% dos participantes em sua forma grave (PS > 7), valor dentro dos padrões conhecidos no Brasil e no mundo, não havendo um diferencial por ser um povo negro. Faixa etária, escolaridade e uso de tabaco foram indicadores de risco relacionados com a doença.
