Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA in the blood was measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 37 subjects from eight families in which 2 or more persons tested seropositive for antibodies against C100-3 or CP9. HCV-RNA was positive in 17 of 37 subjects. Two or more HCV-RNA-positive subjects were observed in six of the families. Intrafamilial HCV infection was studied by determining the HCV-RNA type (I, II, III or IV) by PCR using type-specific primers. In two families, all of the subjects showed type III infection, and in three other families, all of the subjects showed type II infection, with different types of HCV infections being observed in only one family. The HCV type was uniform in all but one. These findings suggest a possibility of intrafamilial infection between husbands and wives and between members of the same household.

Abstract

This paper proposes an evolutionary method for acquiring team strategies of RoboCup soccer agents. The action of an agent in a subspace is specified by a set of action rules. The antecedent part of action rules includes the position of the agent and the distance to the nearest opponent. The consequent part indicates the action that the agent takes when the antecedent part of the action rule is satisfied. The action of each agent is encoded into an integer string that represents the action rules. A chromosome is the concatenated string of integer strings for all agents. We employ an ES-type generation update scheme after producing new integer strings by using crossover and mutation. Through computer simulations, we show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Abstract

even though fibrous wood filler is known to be effective for improving mechanical and water-resistant properties of wood plastic composite (WPC), it has not been commercially adopted because of its high cost and less handling ability. In the present study, with an expectation of similar positive effect of fibrous wood filler, we carried out a fibrillation of a surface of practical wood flour in pre-mixed compound, containing wood flour, polypropylene, and compatibilizer, for producing WPC with high filler content by means of wet disk-milling. Scanning electron micrography revealed a micro-fibrillation on the surface of wood flour in the ground pre-mixed compound. The size of the surface micro-fiber could be controlled by disk-milling conditions. The formation of the micro-fibrous structure affected the melt viscosity of the compounds and improved mechanical properties of molded samples. The positive effect of the surface micro-fiber formation can be attributed to an interaction among the micro-fibers such as hydrogen bonding and entanglement. The observed reinforcement effect by the surface fibrillation was essentially identical to that of wood fiber although fibrillation was attained just in the surface of wood flour. Abstract

For the purpose of understanding the mechanism of the reaction between tannin and poly(N-hydroxymethylacrylamide) (pNMA) reported in the preceding paper, corresponding elemental reactions of catechin and tannin with N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide monomer (NMA) were studied. NMA reacted with both catechin and tannin under acidic conditions, and analyses of the isolated products by NMR and mass spectra revealed the chemical structures of the adducts, supporting the effective adhesion shown in the preceding work. The evidence indicating the decreased solubility of the adduct in water explains the enhanced water resistance of bonding by the tannin-pNMA adhesive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

86. Effect of Glue-line Flexibility on Cleavage Fracture Toughness of Wood-Epoxy Resin Bond System

Abstract

The paper concerns with effect of the mechanical properties of glue-line on the cleavage fracture toughness of wood-epoxy resin bond systems. Tensile stress-strain relations of the resin films flexibilized with polysulfide in various grades were tested at a range of head speed 0.09 mm/min to 180 mm/min and temperature 20℃ to 60℃. Resins containing 20 to 40 parts per hundred of resin (phr) behaved like elasto-plastic material and that of 60 phr like rubber. Numerical analysis of stress distribution in cleavage fracture toughness test specimens of wood-flexibilized epoxy resin bond system was made by using the values of mechanical properties of resin films obtained above. Less stress concentration was found on the tip of a crack in thicker and more flexible glue-line. Higher stress concentration was found on thinner and more rigid glue-line arid on lower density adherend. Test results on cleavage fracture toughness G_ of wood-epoxy resin bond specimens showed clearly that increasing flexibility and thickness of glue-line could effectively improve cleavage fracture toughness of wood-glue bond system., この論文は国立情報学研究所の学術雑誌公開支援事業により電子化されました。

Abstract

A 68-year-old man underwent cholecystectomy and choledochoduodenostomy for biliary obstruction and nephrectomy for a renal tumor. Based on clinical and histopathologic findings, autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) was diagnosed. The renal tumor was diagnosed as a renal cell cancer. Steroid therapy was started and thereafter pancreatic inflammation improved. Five years after surgery, the patient was readmitted because of pyrexia in a preshock state. A Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess complicated by sepsis was diagnosed. The patient recovered with percutaneous abscess drainage and administration of intravenous antibiotics. Liver abscess recurred 1 mo later but was successfully treated with antibiotics. There has been little information on long-term outcomes of patients with AIP treated with surgery. To our knowledge, this is the second case of liver abscess after surgical treatment of AIP.
