56. Line-of-sight Shell Structure of the Cygnus Loop

Abstract

We conducted a comprehensive study on the shell structure of the Cygnus Loop using 41 observation data obtained by the Suzaku and the XMM-Newton satellites. To investigate the detailed plasma structure of the Cygnus Loop, we divided our fields of view into 1042 box regions. From the spectral analysis, the spectra obtained from the limb of the Loop are well fitted by the single-component non-equilibrium ionization plasma model. On the other hand, the spectra obtained from the inner regions are well fitted by the two-component model. As a result, we confirmed that the low-temperature and the high-temperature components originated from the surrounding interstellar matter (ISM) and the ejecta of the Loop, respectively. From the best-fit results, we showed a flux distribution of the ISM component. The distribution clearly shows the limb-brightening structure, and we found out some low-flux regions. Among them, the south blowout region has the lowest flux. We also found other large low-flux regions at slightly west and the northeast from the center. We estimated the former thin shell region to be 1.3 degrees in diameter and concluded that there exists a blowout along the line of sight in addition to the south blowout. We also calculated the emission measure distribution of the ISM component and showed that the Cygnus Loop is far from the result obtained by a simple Sedov evolution model. From the results, we support that the Cygnus Loop originated from a cavity explosion. The emission measure distribution also suggests that the cavity-wall density is higher in the northeast than that in the southwest. Abstract

We present the analysis of Suzaku observations of the young open cluster Westerlund 2, which is filled with diffuse X-ray emission. We found that the emission consists of three thermal components or two thermal and one non-thermal components. The upper limit of the energy flux of the non-thermal component is smaller than that in the TeV band observed with H.E.S.S. This may indicate that active particle acceleration has stopped in this cluster, and that the accelerated electrons have already cooled. The gamma-ray emission observed with H.E.S.S. is likely to come from high-energy protons, which hardly cool in contrast with electrons. Metal abundances of the diffuse X-ray gas may indicate the explosion of a massive star in the past., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract

We observed the northern rim of the Cygnus Loop with the \textit{Suzaku} observatory in 5 pointings (P21-P25). From the spatially resolved analysis, all the spectra are well fitted by the single component of the non-equilibrium ionization plasma model. From the best-fit parameters, we found that the abundances of the heavy elements are significantly lower than the solar values except those at the outermost edge in P21 and P22. The origin of the depleted metal abundances is still unclear while such deficiencies have been reported from many other rim observations of the Loop. To explain these depletion at the rim regions, we considered the several possibilities. The effects of the resonance-line-scattering and the grain condensation lower the values of the abundances. However, these are not sufficient to account for the abundance depletion observed. We found that the abundances at the outermost edge in P21 and P22 are higher than those at the other regions. From the morphological point of view, it is reasonable to consider that this abundance inhomogeneity is derived from the breakout or the thinness of the cavity wall of the Loop., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, PASJ, Vol.61, No.3

68. Estimation of viscoelastic structure in southwestern Hokkaido due to post-seismic deformation of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw8.0)

Abstract

Long-term post-seismic crustal deformation characteristics in southwestern Hokkaido induced by the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw 8.0) were investigated using the F5 GNSS daily coordinate data. Comparison of the detrended coordinate time series before and after the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake indicated that post-seismic horizontal deformation exceeded co-seismic displacements and continued at least 7.5 years until the day of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake (M9.0). Viscoelastic subsurface models were examined to fit to observed horizontal displacement time series. Parameters of elastic layer 20～30km and viscosity 1×1018 Pa s well reproduced features of observed displacement time series. Estimated coefficient suggest relatively low viscosity in southwestern Hokkaido and was well consistent with that from previous studies in this region.

69. Modeling of seasonal gravity changes observed with a superconducting gravimeter

Abstract

Continuous gravity observation with iGrav superconducting gravimeter (#17) was carried out at the Teshikaga, eastern Hokkaido, from November 2018 to August 2022. Gravity timeseries with correction of tides, atmospheric pressure change, and polar motion indicated characteristic seasonal gravity changes from winter to spring in each year. Rate of gravity increases in the early spring in 2021 and 2022 were smaller than those in 2019 and 2020. The G-WATER[1D] software (Kazama et al., 2012) was applied to estimate the gravity change associated with underground water mass variation due to precipitation, snow cover and melting. Calculated gravity changes using parameters supposed by Yamaga and Nawa (2020) could not explain the above differences. Optimal parameters associated with infiltration process of snowmelt water and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil were searched by try and error. As a result, gradual snowmelt infiltration process with an approximately one-order larger hydraulic conductivity could well explain the 4-time seasonal gravity change observed in winter to early spring.

Abstract

Cyanobacterial blooms are widely known to cause problems in the aquatic environment, and their appearance has become more frequent due to global warming. Microcystis is one of the most widespread and dominant bloom-forming cyanobacterial genera, largely because Microcystis has the ability to control its buoyancy. A buoyancy experiment conducted on Microcystis sp. isolated from cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Senba, Japan, showed that buoyancy could be controlled using a combination of preculture under the dark conditions and the addition of powdered tightly bound extracellular polysaccharides (TB-EPS) and metal cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+). Preculture under the dark conditions, 96 h in length were the most effective treatment to reduce the cellular carbohydrate content of Microcystis and simultaneously increase its buoyancy. The addition of TB-EPS, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions increased the colony size of Microcystis and enhanced buoyancy in precultures under both dark and light conditions. Thus, the buoyancy of Microcystis can be controlled by reducing its cellular carbohydrate content by preculturing it in dark conditions for 96 h and increasing the colony size with the addition of 100 mg l−1 EPS, 80 mg l−1 Ca2+ and 80 mg l−1 Mg2+. This study contributes to establishing a novel removal method for cyanobacterial blooms dominated by Microcystis, especially in water treatment facilities. • Microcystis buoyancy was controlled by decreasing cellular carbohydrate content using preculture under dark conditions. • The addition of TB-EPS, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions increased the colony size of Microcystis and enhanced the buoyancy in precultures under both dark and light conditions. • This represents a novel removal method for cyanobacterial blooms in water treatment facilities. Abstract

Practical applications like very thin stress-strain sensors require high strength, stretchability, and conductivity, simultaneously. One of the approaches is improving the toughness of the stress-strain sensing materials. Polymeric materials with movable cross-links in which the polymer chain penetrates the cavity of cyclodextrin (CD) demonstrate enhanced strength and stretchability, simultaneously. We designed two approaches that utilize elastomer nanocomposites with movable cross-links and carbon filler (ketjenblack, KB). One approach is mixing SC (a single movable cross-network material), a linear polymer (poly(ethyl acrylate), PEA), and KB to obtain their composite. The electrical resistance increases proportionally with tensile strain, leading to the application of this composite as a stress- strain sensor. The responses of this material are stable for over 100 loading and unloading cycles. The other approach is a composite made with KB and a movable cross-network elastomer for knitting dissimilar polymers (KP), where movable cross-links connect the CD-modified polystyrene (PSCD) and PEA. The obtained composite acts as a highly sensitive stress-strain sensor that exhibits an exponential increase in resistance with increasing tensile strain due to the polymer dethreading from the CD rings. The designed preparations of highly repeatable or highly responsive stress-strain sensors with good mechanical properties can help broaden their application in electrical devices.

96. Viscoelastic behaviors for optimizing self-healing of gels with host–guest inclusion complexes

Abstract

This research showed that the self-healing properties of reversible crosslinked gels with host–guest inclusion complexes depended on the mobility of network chains and the recombination behaviors of reversible complexes, which were affected by changes in the water–glycerol solvent composition. The sticky reptation behaviors of the polymer chains were delayed by the recombination behaviors of reversible bonds. These behavioral characteristics were observed based on a dynamic viscoelasticity. Increasing the glycerol concentration in the mixed solvent decreased the surface tension and increased the mobility of the network chains because the recombination of the complex was slowed by the weak hydrophobic interactions between the host and guest molecules. Consequently, self-healing properties, such as re-adhesion at the cutting surface, were improved by the interdiffusion of polymer chains at the reattached interface. The strong hydrophobic interactions in pure water promoted the formation of complexes within the same cutting surface, thus decreasing the self-healing rates of the mechanical properties. In this study, the solvent was found to be an important parameter for controlling the self-healing properties of reversible crosslinked gels. The competition between the mobility of polymer chains and the recombination behaviors of reversible bonds controlled the self-healing properties of the gels with host–guest inclusion complexes.
