We demonstrate that a de Broglie wave of a particle in a gravitational field turns towards the region of a smaller gravitational potential, causing the particle to fall. This turning is caused by clocks running slower in the smaller potential. We use the analogy of ocean waves that are slower in shallower water and turn towards beaches. Assessing the significance and implications of the recently established Hubble tension requires the comprehensive identification, quantification, and mitigation of uncertainties and/or biases affecting $H_0$ measurements. Here, we investigate the previously overlooked distance scale bias resulting from the interplay between redshift and Leavitt laws in an expanding Universe: Redshift-Leavitt bias (RLB). Redshift dilates oscillation periods of pulsating stars residing in supernova-host galaxies relative to periods of identical stars residing in nearby (anchor) galaxies. Multiplying dilated $\log{P}$ with Leavitt Law slopes leads to underestimated absolute magnitudes, overestimated distance moduli, and a systematic error on $H_0$. Emulating the SH0ES distance ladder, we estimate an associated $H_0$ bias of $(0.27 \pm 0.01)$% and obtain a corrected $H_0 = (73.70 \pm 1.40) \rm{km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$. RLB becomes increasingly relevant as distance ladder calibrations pursue greater numbers of ever more distant galaxies hosting both Cepheids (or Miras) and type-Ia supernovae. The possibility of using retrocausality to obtain a fundamentally relativistic account of the Bell correlations has gained increasing recognition in recent years. It is not known, however, the extent to which these models can make use of their relativistic properties to account for relativistic effects on entangled systems. We consider here a hypothetical relativistic Bell experiment, where one of the wings experiences time-dilation effects. We show that the retrocausal Brans model (Found. Phys, 49(2), 2019) can be easily generalised to analyse this experiment, and that it predicts less separation of eigenpackets in the wing experiencing the time-dilation. This causes the particle distribution patterns on the photographic plates to differ between the wings -- an experimentally testable prediction of the model. We discuss the difficulties faced by other hidden variable models in describing this experiment, and their natural resolution in our model due to its relativistic properties. In particular, we discuss how a $\psi$-epistemic interpretation may resolve several difficulties encountered in relativistic generalisations of de Broglie-Bohm theory and objective state reduction models. Lastly, we argue that it is not clear at present, due to technical difficulties, if our prediction is reproduced by quantum field theory. We conclude that if it is, then the retrocausal Brans model predicts the same result with great simplicity in comparison. We first present the salient features of the gravitational time dilation and redshift effects in two ways; by considering the oscillation frequencies/rates of clocks at different heights/potentials and by considering the photons emitted by these clocks such as atoms/nuclei. We then point out to the extension of these gravitational effects to static electricity along with two experiments performed in the '30s with null results of the electrostatic redshift. We show that the absence of this redshift is a consequence of the conservation of electric charge. We discuss the electrical time dilation and redshift effects in detail and argue that the electrostatic time dilation in an electric field must be a fact of Nature. We then present a general relativistic scheme that explains this effect. We also introduce an electrical equivalence principle analogous to the gravitational one and demonstrate how to obtain the electrostatic time dilation by this principle. We emphasize the importance of ionic atomic clocks to measure this effect whose confirmation would support the general relativistic scheme presented. We finally go over an attempt in the literature to explain the impossibility of the experimental observation of the electrostatic redshift due to its smallness by employing the Reissner - Nordstr\"om metric in general relativity. We argue that the $Q^{\,2}$ - term in this metric is due to the minuscule contribution of the energy of the electric field of the central body to its gravitational field. At the intersection of quantum theory and relativity lies the possibility of a clock experiencing a superposition of proper times. We consider quantum clocks constructed from the internal degrees of relativistic particles that move through curved spacetime. The probability that one clock reads a given proper time conditioned on another clock reading a different proper time is derived. From this conditional probability distribution, it is shown that when the center-of-mass of these clocks move in localized momentum wave packets they observe classical time dilation. We then illustrate a quantum correction to the time dilation observed by a clock moving in a superposition of localized momentum wave packets that has the potential to be observed in experiment. We review a theorem of Gao-Wald on a kind of a gravitational "time delay" effect in null geodesically complete spacetimes under NEC and NGC, and we observe that it is not valid anymore throughout its statement, as well as a conclusion that there is a class of cosmological models where particle horizons are absent, if one substituted the manifold topology with a finer (spacetime-) topology. Since topologies of the Zeeman-G\"obel class incorporate the causal, differential and conformal structure of a spacetime, and there are serious mathematical arguments in favour of such topologies and against the manifold topology, there is a strong evidence that "time dilation" theorems of this kind are topological in nature rather than having a particular physical meaning.

The theory of relativity associates a proper time with each moving object via its world line. In quantum theory however, such well-defined trajectories are forbidden. After introducing a general characterisation of quantum clocks, we demonstrate that, in the weak-field, low-velocity limit, all "good" quantum clocks experience time dilation as dictated by general relativity when their state of motion is classical (i.e. Gaussian). For nonclassical states of motion, on the other hand, we find that quantum interference effects may give rise to a significant discrepancy between the proper time and the time measured by the clock. The universality of this discrepancy implies that it is not simply a systematic error, but rather a quantum modification to the proper time itself. We also show how the clock's delocalisation leads to a larger uncertainty in the time it measures -- a consequence of the unavoidable entanglement between the clock time and its center-of-mass degrees of freedom. Proper time, ideal clocks, and boosts are well understood classically, but subtleties arise in quantum physics. We show that quantum clocks set in motion via momentum boosts do not witness classical time dilation. However, using velocity boosts we find the ideal behaviour in both cases where the quantum clock and classical observer are set in motion. Without internal state dependent forces additional effects arise. As such, we derive observed frequency shifts in ion trap atomic clocks, indicating a small additional shift, and also show the emergence of non-ideal behaviour in a theoretical clock model., Comment: 5 pages. We conjecture that the relative rate of time evolution depends on the amount of quantum correlations in a system. This is motivated by the experimental work [1] which showed that quantum tunneling is not instantaneous. The non-zero tunneling time may have other profound implications for the regulation of time in an entangled system. It opens the possibility that other types of quantum correlations may require non-zero rates of update. If this is true, it provides a mechanism for regulating the relative rate of time evolution.

The aim of the experiment series was to test the influence of acceleration on time dilation by measuring the relative spectral shift between the resonance spectra of a rotating Mossbauer absorber with acceleration anti-parallel and parallel to the direction of the incident beam. Based on the experiences and know-how acquired in our previous experiments, We collected data for rotation frequencies up to 510Hz in both directions of rotation and also used different slits. For each run with high rotation, we observed a stable statistically significant relative shift between the spectra of the two states with opposite acceleration. This indicates the influence of acceleration on time dilation. However, we found that this shift also depends on the choice of the slit, and on the direction of rotation. These new unexpected findings, resulting from the loss of symmetry in obtaining the resonant lines in the two states, could overshadow the relative shift due to acceleration. This loss of the symmetry is caused by the deflection of the radiative decay due to the Nuclear Lighthouse effect from the rotating Mossbauer absorber. We also found that it is impossible to keep the alignment (between the optical and the dynamical rotor systems) with accuracy needed for such experiment, for long runs, which resulted in the reduction of the accuracy of the observed relative shift. These prevent us to claim with certainty the influence of acceleration on time dilation using the currently available technology. An improved KB optics with focal spot of less than 1 micron to avoid the use of a slit and a more rigid mounting of the rotor system, are necessary for the success of such experiment. Hopefully, these findings together with the indispensable plan for a conclusive experiment presented in the paper, will prove useful to future experimentalists wishing to pursue such an experiment.

In this work, the relativistic phenomena of Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction and time dilation are derived using a modified distance formula that is appropriate for discrete space. This new distance formula is different than the Pythagorean theorem but converges to it for distances large relative to the Planck length. First, four candidate formulas developed by different people over the last 70 years will be discussed. Three of the formulas are shown to be identical for conditions that best describe discrete space. It is shown that this new distance formula is valid for all size-scales -- from the Planck length upwards -- and solves two major problems historically associated with the discrete space-time (DST) model. One problem it solves is the widely believed anisotropic nature of most discrete space models. Just as commonly believed is the second problem -- the incompatibility of DST's concept of an immutable atom of space and the length contraction of this atom required by special relativity. The new formula for distance in DST solves this problem. It is shown that length contraction of the atom of space does not occur for any relative velocity of two reference frames. It is also shown that time dilation of the atom of time does not occur. Also discussed is the possibility of any object being able to travel at the speed of light for specific temporal durations given by an equation derived in this work. Also discussed is a method to empirical verify the discreteness of space by studying any observed anomalies in the motion of astronomical bodies, such as differences in the bodies' inertial masses and gravitational masses. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the time dilation and Doppler effect in curved space-time from the perspective of quantum field theory (QFT). A Coordinate Transformation which Maintains the Period of Clocks is introduced, and such coordinate transformation is named as CTMPC throughout this paper. By analogy with the Lorentz transformation in Minkowski space-time, CTMPC is a correct transformation in curved space-times in a sense that it shows the correct relation between the time measured by the two observers, moreover, Lorentz transformation is just a special case of CTMPC applied in Minkowski space-time. We demonstrate that the Coordinate Transformation which Maintains the Local Metric (CTMLM) is one CTMPC, while the mathematical forms of physics formulas in QFT will be maintained. As applications of CTMLM, the time dilation and Doppler effect with an arbitrary time-dependent relative velocity in curved space-time are analysed. For Minkowski space-time, the time dilation and Doppler effect agree with the clock hypothesis. For curved space-time, we show that even if the emitted wave has a narrow frequency range, the Doppler effect may, in general, broaden the frequency spectrum and, at the meantime, shift the frequencies values. These new findings will deepen our understanding on the nature of space-time and the Doppler effect in curved space-time, they may also provide theoretical guidance in future astronomical observations., Comment: 37 pages, 3 figures. Students at Colorado College and cadets at the US Air Force Academy have conducted an experimental test of gravitational time dilation. This relativistic effect, highlighted in the movie Interstellar, causes clocks to tick more slowly near massive objects. A measurement of gravitational time dilation was made by comparing signals generated by a GPS frequency standard, which is based on sea-level time, to a cesium-beam frequency standard located at three different elevations above sea level. The effect is small but observable; for the highest elevation studied (4302 m on the summit of Pikes Peak), a local clock ticks only 41 ns/day faster than a sea-level clock. The decay of a moving system is studied in case the system is initially prepared in a two-mass unstable quantum state. The survival probability $\mathcal{P}_p(t)$ is evaluated over short and long times in the reference frame where the unstable system moves with constant linear momentum $p$. The mass distribution densities of the two mass states are tailored as power laws with powers $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$ near the non-vanishing lower bounds $\mu_{0,1}$ and $\mu_{0,2}$ of the mass spectra, respectively. If the powers $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$ differ, the long-time survival probability $\mathcal{P}_p(t)$ exhibits a dominant inverse-power-law decay and is approximately related to the survival probability at rest $\mathcal{P}_0(t)$ by a time dilation. The corresponding scaling factor $\chi_{p,k}$ reads $\sqrt{1+p^2/\mu_{0,k}^2}$, the power $\alpha_k$ being the lower of the powers $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$. If the two powers coincide and the lower bounds $\mu_{0,1}$ and $\mu_{0,2}$ differ, the scaling relation is lost and damped oscillations of the survival probability $\mathcal{P}_p(t)$ appear over long times. By changing reference frame, the period $T_0$ of the oscillations at rest transforms in the longer period $T_p$ according to a factor which is the weighted mean of the scaling factors of each mass, with non-normalized weights $\mu_{0,1}$ and $\mu_{0,2}$.

The relativistic quantum decay laws of moving unstable particles are analyzed for a general class of mass distribution densities which behave as power laws near the (non-vanishing) lower bound $\mu_0$ of the mass spectrum. The survival probability $\mathcal{P}_p(t)$, the instantaneous mass $M_p(t)$ and the instantaneous decay rate $\Gamma_p(t)$ of the moving unstable particle are evaluated over short and long times for an arbitrary value $p$ of the (constant) linear momentum. The ultrarelativistic and non-relativistic limits are studied. Over long times, the survival probability $\mathcal{P}_p(t)$ is approximately related to the survival probability at rest $\mathcal{P}_0(t)$ by a scaling law. The scaling law can be interpreted as the effect of the relativistic time dilation if the asymptotic value $M_p\left(\infty\right)$ of the instantaneous mass is considered as the effective mass of the unstable particle over long times. The effective mass has magnitude $\mu_0$ at rest and moves with linear momentum $p$ or, equivalently, with constant velocity $1\Big/\sqrt{1+\mu_0^2\big/p^2}$. The instantaneous decay rate $\Gamma_p(t)$ is approximately independent of the linear momentum $p$, over long times, and, consequently, is approximately invariant by changing reference frame.

Trapped-ion optical clocks are capable of achieving systematic fractional frequency uncertainties of $10^{-18}$ and possibly below. However, the stability of current ion clocks is fundamentally limited by the weak signal of single-ion interrogation. We present an operational, scalable platform for extending clock spectroscopy to arrays of Coulomb crystals consisting of several tens of ions, while allowing systematic shifts as low as $10^{-19}$. Using a newly developed technique, we observe 3D excess micromotion amplitudes inside a Coulomb crystal with atomic spatial resolution and sub-nanometer amplitude uncertainties. We show that in ion Coulomb crystals of 400$\mu$m and 2mm length, time dilation shifts of In${}^+$ ions due to micromotion can be close to $1\times10^{-19}$ and below $10^{-18}$, respectively. In previous ion traps, excess micromotion would have dominated the uncertainty budget for spectroscopy of even a few ions. By minimizing its contribution and providing a means to quantify it, this work opens up the path to precision spectroscopy in many-body ion systems, enabling entanglement-enhanced ion clocks and providing a well-controlled, strongly coupled quantum system., Comment: 5+2 pages, 4+1 figures

Recently it was shown that classical "relativistic" particle dynamics was implicit in physics going back to Maxwell. The demonstration utilized a simple modification of a 1906 thought experiment by which Einstein established the mass equivalence of energy, independently of the relativity postulates. The modified thought experiment leads directly to correct expressions for the momentum and kinetic energy of a particle at high speed. In the present paper, one additional ingredient is added, namely, the Bohr quantization rule of the old quantum theory. Interplays between quantum physics and gravity have long inspired exciting studies, which reveal subtle connections between quantum laws and the general notion of curved spacetime. One important example is the uniqueness of free-falling motions in both quantum and gravitational physics. In this work, we re-investigate the free-falling motions of quantum test wave packets that are distributed over weakly curved spacetime backgrounds. Except for the de Broglie relations, no assumption of priori given Hamiltonians or least actions satisfied by the quantum system is made. We find that the mean motions of quantum test wave packets can be deduced naturally from the de Broglie relations with a generalized treatment of gravitational time dilations in quantum waves. Such mean motions of quantum test masses in gravitational field are independent of their masses and compositions, and restore exactly the free-falling or geodesic motions of classical test masses in curved spacetime. This suggests a novel perspective that weak equivalence principle, which states the universality of free-fall, may be deeply rooted in quantum physics and be a phenomenon that has emerged from the quantum world., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We study the loss of quantumness caused by time dilation [1] for a Schr\"odinger cat state. We give a holistic view of the quantum to classical transition by comparing the dynamics of several nonclassicality indicators, such as the Wigner function interference fringe, the negativity of the Wigner function, the nonclassical depth, the Vogel criterion and the Klyshko criterion. Our results show that only two of these indicators depend critically on the size of the cat, namely on how macroscopic the superposition is. Finally we compare the gravitation-induced decoherence times to the typical decoherence times due to classical noise originating from the unavoidable statistical fluctuations in the characteristic parameters of the system [21]. We show that the experimental observation of decoherence due to time dilation imposes severe limitations on the allowed levels of classical noise in the experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures.
