Harima-Nada region, located in the east of Seto Inland Sea, is a semi-enclosed sea-area next to Osaka Bay that has been suffering a sustained oligotrophication process during the past 25 years. A hydrogeological model, coupled with a water quality model, was applied to assess the numerical discharge of freshwater and total nitrogen (TN) load from rivers into the sea. The model was validated for the main rivers from the northern and southern regions (the Kako River and the Yoshino River, respectively). The obtained results showed that the main contribution of freshwater and TN load to the sea comes from Hyogo Prefecture Rivers. The type of activities developed on each watershed showed to be substantially more relevant on TN load contribution than the size itself of the considered watershed. For the eight years considered in this study (2009 - 2016), the annual average of TN discharged into Harima-Nada was almost constant, while the volume of discharged freshwater showed more variations. Additionally, the sustained decrement in nitrogen concentration in Harima-Nada seemed not to be directly bonded with riverine TN load, suggesting that nitrogen availability is closely related to sea nutrients mechanisms more than to TN inland contribution.

γ-Butenolides have been recognized as an important structural framework in a number of natural products and medicinally important agents. In this work we describe a new metal-free sequential strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of substituted γ-butenolides having epoxychalcones as the advanced intermediate. Using the optimized reaction conditions, we were able to carry out the three-step sequence, epoxidation, olefination and hydrolysis, with only one single chromatographic purification of the final product, furnishing new enantiomerically enriched γ-butenolides in moderate overall yield and good enantiomeric excess.

In the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, the stone wall of Kumamoto Castle has reached 30% of the total, but the cause of the damage is not clear. Therefore, in this paper, the structure of each stone wall and the back ground were classified into three types of stone base, semi-stone base and non-stone base type, and the relationship between the shape and damage ratio was analyzed. As a result, it was revealed that the damage mechanism of Kumamoto Castle stone wall was the main cause of the collapse of the stone base type, and the shocking induced the collapse. Analysis of liquefaction damage using GIS in the liquefaction district of Kumamoto city by on-site survey and survey in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.

The OPERA experiment has conclusively observed the appearance of tau neutrinos in the muon neutrino CNGS beam. Exploiting the OPERA detector capabilities, it was possible to isolate high purity samples of $\nu_{e}$, $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current weak neutrino interactions, as well as neutral current weak interactions. In this Letter, the full dataset is used for the first time to test the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model and to derive constraints on the existence of a light sterile neutrino within the framework of the $3+1$ neutrino model. For the first time, tau and electron neutrino appearance channels are jointly used to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis. A significant fraction of the sterile neutrino parameter space allowed by LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded at 90% C.L. In particular, the best-fit values obtained by MiniBooNE combining neutrino and antineutrino data are excluded at 3.3 $\sigma$ significance., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; Editors: Budimir Kli\v{c}ek and Matteo Tenti

The OPERA experiment discovered muon neutrino into tau neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, detecting tau leptons by means of nuclear emulsion films. The apparatus was also endowed with electronic detectors with tracking capability, such as scintillator strips and resistive plate chambers. Because of its location in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, under 3800 m.w.e., the OPERA detector has also been used as an observatory for TeV muons produced by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. In this paper the measurement of the single muon flux modulation and its correlation with the seasonal cycle of atmospheric temperature is reported. A stereoselective intramolecular Tsuji-Trost cascade cyclization of (homo)allylic vicinal diacetates with a pendant β-ketoamide or related carbon nucleophile to give γ-lactam-fused vinylcyclopropanes is reported. In addition to two new rings, the products contain three new C-C stereocenters (two of which are quaternary) with a 9:1 dr. Moreover, the reaction proceeds in >94% enantiospecificity with optically enriched starting materials, using an inexpensive carbohydrate as the source of chirality.

The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chambers, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by π0s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate m4 is introduced. At high Δm412 (≳0.1 eV2), an upper limit on sin2 2θμe is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and Δm412 ≳ 4 × 10− 3 eV2 is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. After the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in 2015, with $5.1\sigma$ significance, the criteria to select $\nu_\tau$ candidates have been extended and a multivariate approach has been used for events identification. In this way the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties has been improved. Results are reported., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, conference: The 15th International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics (tau2018)AB

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of (Formula Presented) oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the τ leptons produced in ντ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect τ 1~ from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail and applied to the search for charmed hadrons, showing similar decay topologies as the τ lepton. In the analysed sample, 50 charm decay candidate events are observed while 54 ±4 are expected, proving that the detector performance and the analysis chain applied to neutrino events are well reproduced by the OPERA simulation and thus validating the methods for ντ appearance detection., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., through the direct observation of the tau lepton in nu(tau)- charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two nu(tau) candidates with a tau decaying into hadrons were observed in a subsample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third nu(tau) candidate in the tau(-) -> mu(-) decay channel coming from the analysis of a subsample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 sigma level.

The OPERA experiment is searching for νμ ν τ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. via the direct detection of \tau leptons in \nu -\tau charged-current interactions. The evidence of \nu -\mu \rightarrow \nu -\tau appearance has been previously reported with three \nu -\tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth \nu -\tau candidate event, with the \tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analyzed events and the low background, \nu -\mu \rightarrow \nu -\tau oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2\sigma., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

International audience; We describe the first ever implementation of a clock-based, multi-stage emulsion shifter in an accelerator neutrino experiment. The system was installed in the neutrino monitoring building at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex as part of a test experiment, T60, and stable operation was maintained for a total of 126.6 days. By applying time information to emulsion films, various results were obtained. Time resolutions of 5.3–14.7 s were evaluated in an operation spanning 46.9 days (yielding division numbers of 1.4–3.8$\times10^{5}$). By using timing and spatial information, reconstruction of coincident events consisting of high-multiplicity and vertex-contained events, including neutrino events, was performed. Emulsion events were matched to events observed by INGRID, one of the on-axis near detectors of the T2K experiment, with high reliability (98.5%), and hybrid analysis of the emulsion and INGRID events was established by means of the multi-stage shifter. The results demonstrate that the multi-stage shifter can feasibly be used in neutrino experiments.

Precise neutrino--nucleus interaction measurements in the sub-multi GeV region are important to reduce the systematic uncertainty in future neutrino oscillation experiments. Furthermore, the excess of ${\nu_e}$ interactions, as a possible interpretation of the existence of a sterile neutrino has been observed in such an energy region. The nuclear emulsion technique can measure all the final state particles with low energy threshold for a variety of targets (Fe, C, H${_2}$O, and so on). Its sub-$\mu$m position resolution allows measurements of the ${\nu_e}$ cross-section with good electron/gamma separation capability. We started a new experiment at J-PARC to study sub-multi GeV neutrino interactions by introducing the nuclear emulsion technique. The J-PARC T60 experiment has been implemented as a first step of such a project. Systematic neutrino event analysis with full scanning data in the nuclear emulsion detector was performed for the first time. The first neutrino event detection and its analysis is described in this paper., Comment: 26 pages, 29 figures, 4 table, prepared for submission to PTEP

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is one of the most important complications of heparin, and results in thrombosis despite its use as an anticoagulation therapy. Although the clinical information is helpful, laboratory tests are essential for diagnosing HIT; two principles of assays detecting anti-PF4/heparin antibody (HIT Ab) exist, i.e., an immunoassay and a functional assay. 14C serotonin release assay (14C-SRA), a representative functional HIT Ab assay, is established to be a golden standard test for HIT, the usage of radioisotope hampers its wide spread, especially in Japan. Although immunological HIT Ab can be assayed by commercially available kits, whether this HIT Ab activates platelets cannot be assessed by this method. Recently in Japan, the automated immunoassay for HIT Ab detection has been approved as a clinical laboratory test in the national medical insurance system; only the latex agglutination test is now widely used clinically because of its simplicity, convenience and cost-effectiveness. In this review, we describe the present status of the diagnosis and management of patients with suspected HIT in Japan.

We have performed homoepitaxial MBE growth of nitrogen (N) -doped ZnO and studied the postanneal effect on electrical conduction properties. A rapid postanneal after MBE growth is found to enhance the donor–acceptor (D–A) pair emission intensity, converting from n-type (as-grown) to p-type conduction. The p-type ZnO showed extremely high resistivity (>103 Ω cm) at room temperature. Carrier-compensating donor-like defects in N-doped ZnO were traced by using PPC (persistent photocurrent), which is coupled with in situ Hall effect measurements. It is found that highly resistive p-ZnO includes a high density of metastable donor-like defects forming a deep donor band in the midgap region. This midgap donor band plays a role in Fermi-level pinning at around the midgap position, resulting in high resistivity. Based on X-ray photoemission spectroscopy experiments one possible origin of the deep donor band is introduced as nitrogen molecule (N2(o)) defects locating at the O atomic site. This study focuses on some sulfa-drugs that have been heavily used in livestock husbandry and emitted into the Lake Biwa and Yodo River Basin. Emissions of sulfa-drugs were estimated using the national statistical data on veterinary drug usage and livestock excrement in Japan. One-box and distributional type multimedia fate models were utilized with the estimated emissions in order to simulate the behaviour of sulfa-drugs in four environmental media (atmosphere, soil, water and sediment) in the study period from 2005 to 2015 in the basin. Based on the calculated results, sulfa-drugs emitted to the soil media were efficiently transported to water, which resulted in the largest amount in water among the environmental media and high concentrations in and around areas with large farmland proportion.

An apparatus for measurement of mechanocaloric effect in rubber has been constructed and tested by measuring the thermal response of three rubber materials to mechanical strain. The results obtained were satisfactory. Detailed measurement has been performed on these materials. The entropy changes that accompany elongation were calculated from the experimental results and compared with those derived from literature data and statistical theory of the macromolecular chain. A dissipative effect was found to accompany the rapid deformation of rubber and attributed to viscoelastic irreversibility. An experimental procedure to eliminate this effect was identified. The apparatus, assembled with the readily available components, will be a useful device for introducing the entropy concept in thermodynamics courses.

The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of ντ in the CNGS νμ beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the τ leptonic decay and in νμ CC interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the τ decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in νμ CC interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Fallow field biotopes that develop from abandoned rice fields are man-made wetlands that provide new habitats for various aquatic animals. Although consideration of such biotopes generally focuses on their positive aspects, this study evaluated the negative aspects of establishing fallow field biotopes with regard to mosquito breeding sites. To determine whether fallow field biotopes become breeding habitats for vector mosquitoes, we evaluated mosquito fauna in fallow field biotopes and adjacent rice fields. We found larvae of Anopheles lesteri, Anopheles sinensis and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (all: Diptera: Culicidae) in the biotopes. Although abundances of mosquito larvae in the biotopes and rice fields were statistically similar, mosquito abundances in rice fields increased dramatically in August when the water level reduced after the rainy season. The abundance and variety of the mosquitoes' natural predators were greater in biotopes than in rice fields because the former are a permanent and stable aquatic environment. A generalized linear mixed model showed a negative effect of predator diversity on mosquito larvae abundance in both habitats. Although fallow field biotopes become breeding habitats for vector mosquitoes, establishing biotopes from fallow fields in order to protect various aquatic animals, including mosquito insect predators, may help to control mosquito breeding.

Antiretroviral therapy advances have proportioned to AIDS patients a survival increase. At the same time, the permanence of the seropositive people in the nosocomial environment becomes common not only by the adverse reactions caused by this therapy, but also by several opportunistic diseases that take them into and out of hospital environment. During the hospital permanence, the patients expose their impaired immune system to the nosocomial virulent microorganisms, and acquire destructive nosocomial infections that sometimes can be lethal. Among several hospital syndromes described, little is known about infections in immunocompromised patients and how their immune system is able to determine the course of the infection. The objective of this study was to describe the major microorganisms involved in the nosocomial infections of HIV-1 seropositive patients associated with their immunological status. The survey was carried out with the Hospital Infection Control Service records, from University Hospital, Londrina, Paraná, Southern of Brazil, during the period from July 2003 to July 2004. From all the cases studied (n=969), 24 patients (2.5%) had AIDS diagnosis and a half of them was women with the mean of CD4+ T cells counts of 158/mm³. The main topography of the infection was pulmonary (50.0%) and the main isolated microorganisms were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. A major incidence of infection was observed in patients with CD4+ T cells counts lower than 50/mm³. The study of the relationship between the impairment of the immune system and infectious agents could provide a better healthcare of people living with HIV/AIDS and advances into the nosocomial infection control systems.

Summary This study is to elucidate whether the B- and T-lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) gene is a new susceptibility gene for the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). As a result, this study did not find any genetic contribution of the BTLA gene to the development of T1D and SLE in Japanese population.

In this paper, we propose an unbounded model checking method for feature interaction verification for telecommunication systems. Unbounded model checking is a SAT-based verification method and has attracted recent attention as a powerful approach. The interpolation-based approach is one of the most promising unbounded model checking methods and has been proven to be effective for hardware verification. However, the application of unbounded model checking to asynchronous systems, such as telecommunication systems, has rarely been practiced. This is because, with the conventional encoding, the behavior of an asynchronous system can only be represented as a large propositional formula, thus resulting in large computational cost. To overcome this problem we propose to use a new scheme for encoding the behavior of the system and adapt the unbounded model checking algorithm to this encoding. By exploiting the concurrency of an asynchronous system, this encoding scheme allows a very concise formula to represent system's behavior. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct experiments where 21 pairs of telecommunication services are verified using several methods including ours. The results show that our approach exhibits significant speed-up over unbounded model checking using the traditional encoding.

Structural analyses of hydrated K9-L and K7.5H1.5-L zeolites were carried out by measurements of X-ray powder diffraction patterns and Rietveld refinements, and distributions of potassium ion in the zeolites were investigated. K7.5H1.5-L was obtained by heating K7.5TMA1.5-L at 773 K in air, which was prepared through an ion-exchange of K9-L with TMA ion. In both K9-L and K7.5H1.5-L, potassium ion located only on sites B, D and E. The number of potassium ion on site D was the most remarkably different between K9-L and K7.5H1.5-L, that is, its number was 4.08 per unit cell (puc) in K9-L and 3.00 puc in K7.5H1.5-L. It was found from this result that TMA ion preferentially exchanges with potassium ion on site D. The potassium ion on site E also reduced to 2.52 puc in K7.5H1.5-L from 2.94 puc in K9-L. It was considered that the reduction arose in the ion-exchange between K+/E and the hydrogen ion (just) after converting to K,H-L from K7.5TMA1.5-L by heating, because TMA ion cannot access site E at all due to the location of site E and its ion size, but hydrogen ion can. All the nearest interatomic distance between a potassium ion and a framework oxygen showed the tendency which becomes longer in K7.5H1.5-L than K9-L. The results suggest that the Coulmbic attraction between the potassium ion and a negative chare of framework ( AlO 4 − ) becomes weaker in K7.5H1.5-L than K9-L.
