The LArIAT liquid argon time projection chamber, placed in a tertiary beam of charged particles at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility, has collected large samples of pions, muons, electrons, protons, and kaons in the momentum range 0∼30-0140 MeV/c. This paper describes the main aspects of the detector and beamline, and also reports on calibrations performed for the detector and beamline components.

The characterization of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of dust emission has become a critical issue in the quest for primordial B-modes. The dust SED is often approximated by a modified black body (MBB) emission law but the extent to which this is accurate is unclear. This paper addresses this question, expanding the dust SED at the power spectrum level. The expansion is performed by means of moments around the MBB law, related to derivatives with respect to the dust spectral index. We present the mathematical formalism and apply it to simulations and Planck total intensity data, from 143 to 857 GHz, because no polarized data are yet available that provide the required sensitivity to perform this analysis. With simulations, we demonstrate the ability of high-order moments to account for spatial variations in MBB parameters. Neglecting these moments leads to poor fits and a bias in the recovered dust spectral index. We identify the main moments that are required to fit the Planck data. The comparison with simulations helps us to disentangle the respective contributions from dust and the cosmic infrared background to the high-order moments, but the simulations give an insufficient description of the actual Planck data. Extending our model to cosmic microwave background B-mode analyses within a simplified framework, we find that ignoring the dust SED distortions, or trying to model them with a single decorrelation parameter, could lead to biases that are larger than the targeted sensitivity for the next generation of CMB B-mode experiments., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures, accepted in A&A: A&A 647, A52 (2021)

Voltage Source Inverter consists of power electronic switches, mostly MOSFET or IGBT operating at high frequency. These switches are costly and prone to various faults which if not prevented within a limited time, will result in their burning out and making the inverter inoperable. Further this would lead to potential halt of inverter based processes. Thus protection of these costly power electronic switches against such faults is of utmost importance. This experimental work investigates and prioritizes the protection of the power electronic switches of an inverter against overcurrent and shoot-through faults and also ensures automatic recovery of the inverter based system post the fault clearance.

Maintaining Line stability, improving voltage profile, minimizing real power loss and reducing emission are one of the most vital issues in the operation of electrical power system. Flexible AC Transmission System devices (FACTS) like Static Var Compensator (SVC) can enhance line stability, improve voltage profile and minimize both the power losses and emission. Thus, the allocation of FACTS devices in power system is of great importance. However, due to their high installation cost involved, it is important to place these devices optimally in a power system. In this paper, an iterative study is carried out in Mi-power software for IEEE 57 bus test system. The severity of the line has been detected using Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) and thereafter SVC is placed on the identified critical buses separately to save computation time and search space. In addition to the technical aspect, other aspects i.e. economic and environmental issues are also considered in this paper while placing SVC at the optimal location.

Presence of torsional loadings can significantly affect the flow of internal forces and deformation capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. It increases the possibility of brittle shear failure leading to catastrophic collapse of structural members. This necessitates accurate prediction of the torsional behaviour of RC members for their safe design. However, a review of previously published studies indicates that the torsional behaviour of RC members has not been studied in as much depth as the behaviour under flexure and shear in spite of its frequent occurrence in bridge columns. Very few analytical models are available to predict the response of RC members under torsional loads. Softened truss model (STM) developed in the University of Houston is one of them, which is widely used for this purpose. The present study shows that STM prediction is not sufficiently accurate particularly in the post cracking region when compared to test results. An improved analytical model for RC square columns subjected to torsion with and without axial compression is developed. Since concrete is weak in tension, its contribution to torsional capacity of RC members was neglected in the original STM. The present investigation revealed that, disregard to tensile strength of concrete is the main reason behind the discrepancies in the STM predictions. The existing STM is extended in this paper to include the effect of tension stiffening for better prediction of behaviour of square RC columns under torsion. Three different tension stiffening models comprising a linear, a quadratic and an exponential relationship have been considered in this study. The predictions of these models are validated through comparison with test data on local and global behaviour. It was observed that tension stiffening has significant influence on torsional behaviour of square RC members. The exponential and parabolic tension stiffening models were found to yield the most accurate predictions.

- Abstract
The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, was a success achieved with only a percent of the entire dataset foreseen for the LHC. It opened a landscape of possibilities in the study of Higgs boson properties, Electroweak Symmetry breaking and the Standard Model in general, as well as new avenues in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Six years after the discovery, with a conspicuously larger dataset collected during LHC Run 2 at a 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy, the theory and experimental particle physics communities have started a meticulous exploration of the potential for precision measurements of its properties. This includes studies of Higgs boson production and decays processes, the search for rare decays and production modes, high energy observables, and searches for an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector. This report summarises the potential reach and opportunities in Higgs physics during the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, with an expected dataset of pp collisions at 14 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3~ab$^-1$. These studies are performed in light of the most recent analyses from LHC collaborations and the latest theoretical developments. The potential of an LHC upgrade, colliding protons at a centre-of-mass energy of 27 TeV and producing a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15~ab$^-1$, is also discussed.

The chi(b1)(3P) and chi(b2)(3P) states are observed through their gamma(3S)(gamma) decays, using an event sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data were collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 80.0 fb(-1). The gamma(3S) mesons are identified through their dimuon decay channel, while the low-energy photons are detected after converting to e(+)e(-) pairs in the silicon tracker, leading to a chi(b)(3P) mass resolution of 2.2 MeV. This is the first time that the J = 1 and 2 states are well resolved and their masses individually measured: 10513.42 +/- 0.41(stat) +/- 0.18(syst) MeV and 10524.02 +/- 0.57(stat) +/- 0.18(syst) MeV; they are determined with respect to the world-average value of gamma(3S) mass, which has an uncertainty of 0.5 MeV. The mass splitting is measured to be 10.60 +/- 0.64(stat) +/- 0.17(syst) MeV.

We report results from the first search for sterile neutrinos mixing with active neutrinos through a reduction in the rate of neutral-current interactions over a baseline of 810\,km between the NOvA detectors. Analyzing a 14-kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05$\times$10$^{20}$ protons-on-target in the NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 95 neutral-current candidates at the Far Detector compared with $83.5 \pm 9.7 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 9.4 \mbox{(syst.)}$ events predicted assuming mixing only occurs between active neutrino species. No evidence for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{s}$ transitions is found. Interpreting these results within a 3+1 model, we place constraints on the mixing angles $\theta_{24}, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($\theta_{23} = \pi/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $\Delta m^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 \theta_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $\sigma$ significance., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2011; 33: 768–781 Summary Background Gastric acid has an important pathophysiological role in human beings. Numerous methods have been evaluated over the years in an attempt to measure gastric acid and stomach acidity, to study the role of gastric acid in gastrointestinal diseases in humans and to evaluate the effects of acid suppressing drugs. Aim To review methods that have been used to measure gastric acid and gastric acidity. Methods Searches of the electronic databases PUBMED, MEDLINE and EMBASE, were performed with articles restricted to English language and human subjects. References were also identified from the bibliographies of selected articles. Results Methods for measuring gastric acid include both invasive and non-invasive techniques. Invasive tests include the conventional gastric acid aspiration tests, gastric pH measurement techniques and endoscopic methods. Non-invasive methods use urinary analysis, breath analysis, serum pepsinogens assay, scintigraphic techniques, impedence tomography and alkaline tide for measurement of gastric acid. Conclusions Several methods of measuring gastric acid exist. Invasive tube tests are uncomfortable and time consuming, whereas most of the non-invasive methods are at best semiquantitative and useful in detecting low or absent acid secretion. Further attempts to explore new methods for measuring gastric acid are therefore warranted.

In this article, it is shown that although the reverse conversion scheme for binary signed-digit number system proposed by Choo et. al. can not support full parallelism; the rules on which it is based are correct. In this connection, a mathematical induction technique is used to validate the decomposition rules. Accordingly, it can be inferred that the reverse conversion scheme for binary signed-digit number system proposed by Veeramachaneni et. al. works correctly and performs reverse conversion in Ω (log n) time, where, n is the input size. As a consequence, the scheme by Veeramachaneni et. al. need to be considered as a potential contender of the more recent schemes for the same. General Terms Unconventional Number System, Computer Arithmetic Algorithm.

The safety and spermatogenic activity of processed Shilajit (PS) were evaluated in oligospermic patients. Initially, 60 infertile male patients were assessed and those having total sperm counts below 20 million ml(-1) semen were considered oligospermic and enrolled in the study (n = 35). PS capsule (100 mg) was administered twice daily after major meals for 90 days. Total semenogram and serum testosterone, luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone were estimated before and at the end of the treatment. Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker for oxidative stress, content of semen and biochemical parameters for safety were also evaluated. Twenty-eight patients who completed the treatment showed significant (P < 0.001) improvement in spermia (+37.6%), total sperm count (+61.4%), motility (12.4-17.4% after different time intervals), normal sperm count (+18.9%) with concomitant decrease in pus and epithelial cell count compared with baseline value. Significant decrease of semen MDA content (-18.7%) was observed. Moreover, serum testosterone (+23.5%; P < 0.001) and FSH (+9.4%; P < 0.05) levels significantly increased. HPLC chromatogram revealed inclusion of PS constituents in semen. Unaltered hepatic and renal profiles of patients indicated that PS was safe at the given dose. The present findings provide further evidence of the spermatogenic nature of Shilajit, as attributed in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly when administered as PS.

A standard sol-gel method was used to deposit ZnO thin films of suitable thickness on glass substrate. The optical characteristics of the visible to infrared range on thermal stress were critically observed. Morphological signature of the films was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the crystallite size determined by Scherrer method from XRD data were consistent with grain size estimated from spectroscopic data through Meulenkamp equation. The optical band gap value from the transmission spectrum was found to corroborate with the existing works. (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality during pregnancy. Most of the evidence being used in the management of this condition in pregnancy is extrapolated from the general population. One such intervention is the use of the D-dimer test for the diagnosis of thromboembolism in pregnancy. Although this test has been found to be useful in low-risk non-pregnant patients, its negative predictive value is limited in high-risk patients in the general population to be used as a reliable diagnostic tool. Considering pregnancy as a high-risk state for VTE, we have evaluated the role of D-dimer in diagnosing VTE in pregnancy and proposed a diagnostic algorithm for the management of VTE based on the current evidence available.

Thermally processed lead iodide (PbI2) thin films were prepared by the vacuum evaporation method in a constant ambient. Measured thickness of the film was verified analytically from the optical transmittance data in a wavelength range between 300 and 1600 nm. From the Tauc relation for the non-direct inter band transition, the optical band gap of the film was found to be 2.58 eV for film thickness 300 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that PbI2 films are polycrystalline, having hexagonal structure. The low fluctuation in Urbach energy indicates that the grain size is quite small. The present findings are in agreement with the other results. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

R. Reifarth et al: ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 3.0 ; Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., This project was supported by the HGF Young Investigators Project VH-NG-327, EMMI, H4F, HGS-HIRe, JINA, NAVI, DFG and ATHENA.

Electrochemical planarization (ECP) of copper surfaces in a phosphoric acid-based electrolyte solution is discussed. A first-principles, quantum chemistry modeling work is presented that further validates the water-facilitated (and water rate limited) chemistry model for copper oxidation at the anode. This model has been previously deduced by other researchers [R. Vidal and A. West, J. Electrochem. Soc. 142, 2689 (1995); B. Du and I. I. Suni, J. Appl. Electrochem. 34, 1215 (2004); R. Vidal and A. West J. Electrochem. Soc. 142, 2682 (1995)] based on electrochemical experiments. Resulting water-limited model is validated against experimental data and applied to study the planarization behavior of a set of surface features. Aspect ratios and dimensions of these features were chosen to represent realistic (nonidealized, low aspect ratio structures) post-Damascene electroplate surface topography. Results are presented in a form of remaining feature amplitude versus mean copper thickness removed [A. C. West et ...

- Abstract
It has been observed in the past that, reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are, very often, subjected to torsional moment in addition to flexure and shear during seismic vibration. However, the torsional moment is generally ignored in typical design pr actices. Previous studies have show n that, ignoring torsional moment may lead to brittle shear failure of the columns triggering collapse of the entire or part of the bridge structure. Therefore, rational models n e ed to be developed to consider the effect of torsion in the design of RC bridge columns. Performance based seis mic design is an emerging design concept which calls for accurate prediction of the hysteresis behavior of structural elements to ensure safe and sustainable design under earthquake loadi ng. However, very few investigations in the past focused on the development of analytical model to accurately predict the response of RC members under cyclic torsion. Though quite a good number of models are available for prediction of shear and flexural h ysteresis, they are not readily applicable for torsion owing to significant pinching and stiffness degradation associated with torsional loading. Hysteresis models taking into account pinching and stiffness degradation effect under cyclic torsional loading are scarce. The present study aims at filling this knowledge gap by proposing a n improved polygonal hysteresis model which can accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of RC circular and square columns under torsion. The proposed empirical model is vali dated through experimental data o f two circular columns and two square columns tested under pure torsion . Close correlation is observed between the predicted and measured torque - twist curves .

In the last 15 years, as many as 11 young Americans of Indian descent have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This pattern of one small community's dominance in academic competitions has been seen not just in the spelling bee but also in geography bees, math competitions, and science Olympiads. This has led mainstream media to resurrect the notion of the “Model Minority,” with Indian Americans becoming the new holders of this eponym. This chapter analyzes the discursive construction of Indian Americans as racial emblems in media reports and online message boards. Using Eduardo Bonilla-Silva's notion of “color-blind racism” and Edward Said's theory of Orientalism, the chapter discusses how these children have become exemplars of racial assimilation even as they are indelibly marked as “forever foreign,” and why Indian-Americans feel the compulsion to attempt to conquer “the master's tools.”

This paper presents an analytical model for prediction of torsional behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP). Improved model proposed in this study is based on softened truss model (STM) which was developed to predict the response of reinforced concrete (RC) members under torsional loading. Tensile strength of concrete being very low, its contribution to torsional capacity of a RC member was neglected in the original STM. However, previous studies have suggested that neglecting tension stiffening may lead to considerable discrepancies in STM predictions. Therefore, in the present study the original STM has been modified to include the effect of tension stiffening for improved predictions of FRP strengthened RC beams. The developed model has been validated with experimental data obtained from literature. The proposed model shows the contribution of externally bonded FRP to the torsional capacity of RC members in addition to enhancing the ductility and is well supported by the experimental results. RC beams with two different FRP configurations, i.e. continuously wrapped and strip wise wrapped, were considered in this study. The analytical prediction of the overall torque-twist behavior compare favorably with the test data. The developed model can also be used for future parametric studies on FRP retrofitted RC beams under torsion.

- Abstract
We report a simple method for measuring the inelastic mean free path of nanostructures of known geometry using energy filtered transmission electron microscopy imaging. The mean free path of inelastic electrons was measured by using systems having known symmetry, such as cylindrical or cubic, combined with Poisson statistics without employing the knowledge of microscope parameters, namely the convergence angle and the collection angle. Having inherent symmetry of such systems, their absolute thickness can be measured from their two-dimensional projection images. We have calculated mean free path of inelastic scattering of electrons in gold, silver and nickel doing case study research by employing gold nanorod, silver nanocube and nickel nanorod lying on a carbon-coated TEM grid at two different electron energies (viz. 200 and 300 keV) following this alternative approach. Results obtained using such alternative approach were verified using microscope parameters.

The motion of test particles and light rays in the perturbed gravitational field around a global monopole is studied. The metric of the monopole was previously obtained by solving the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations (Hiscock). The bending of light ray passing by such a monopole has contributions from the conical object as well as from the perturbed terms. The possibility of trapping particles in the perturbed gravitational field is also discussed.

Closed cracks under compressive normal stresses are difficult to detect by the conventional ultrasonic techniques. When the crack surfaces stay in very close contact with each other then the bond between the two surfaces of the crack is called a ‘kissing bond’. This is a very dangerous bond. Catastrophic failures can result if the system is subjected to crack opening normal stresses or shear stresses. When the crack surfaces are smooth then kissing bonds cannot transmit shear stress very well but can carry compressive normal stress, these bonds are called ‘slip bonds’. Conventional P-wave scans (C-scan or A-scan) are based on the assumptions that P-waves are reflected by the defective interface. However, an interface subjected to a large compressive stress cannot reflect P-waves effectively, hence these bonds remain invisible to the conventional P-wave based C-scan or A-scan techniques. In this paper it is shown that the kissing bonds can be effectively detected by some leaky Lamb mode. Theoretical and experimental results are presented to show that using the Lamb waves is an effective way of detecting kissing bonds.

The surface acoustic wave (SAW) speed of a material is conventionally measured by an acoustic microscope from the V(z) curve (voltage V versus the defocus distance z). V(z) curves are generated by moving the lens of an acoustic microscope vertically and thus varying its distance from the specimen. Alternate constructive and destructive interferences between two rays received by the receiver produce oscillating patterns in the V(z) curves. The SAW speed is measured from the distance between two successive dips (or peaks) of the V(z) curve. Recently it has been shown that the SAW speed can also be measured from the V(f) curve. V(f) curves are generated by changing the signal frequency while the lens-specimen distance remains constant. In this paper an alternative method of measuring the SAW speed is proposed. Accuracy of different methods used to measure the SAW speed is investigated. In the new method the SAW speed is measured from the first dips of the V(z) or V(f) curves instead of the distance between two successive dips. Hence, the new methods do not need several clearly defined dips and peaks of the V(z) or V(f) curves, unlike the traditional methods.

Topical Drug Delivery which encompass both dermal (local) and transdermal (systemic) products is one of the most exciting and challenging areas of pharmaceutical research. Traditionally, topical drug delivery systems denote formulations that are intended to deliver drugs locally rather than systemically. These products differ from transdermal delivery systems, which are designed for drugs to penetrate through the skin and provide systemic action. Whether it is topical or transdermal, effectiveness of the formulation depends on the release of the active drug from its dosage form to the skin surface. Once the drug is presented to the skin surface, either it stays mostly on the skin surface or penetrates through the stratum corneum to other cutaneous layers all the way up to systemic circulation to manifest its pharmacological action depending upon the location of the disease to be treated.

Background : Selective in‑vivo anti‑fungal action of potassium iodide (KI) is an enigma, but circumstantial evidences strongly indicate some immune mechanism. Aim: Study was to demonstrate in‑vitro immune‑modulating role of KI. Materials and Methods: In identical test conditions keeping appropriate control, different immunological tests were performed with and without 0.1% effective concentration of KI. i) Sera from Coombs positive mothers were treated with O, Rh‑positive erythrocyte suspensions along with Coombs’ sera (CS)/Bovine albumin (BA)/KI. ii) Amboceptor and complement (C) mixtures were titrated for hemolysis with or without KI. iii) Suspension of Salmonella Typhi with positive sera from enteric cases and C + KI was incubated at 37°C for 30 minutes, then sub‑cultured on MacConkey Agar. iv) Positive serum from chronic muco‑cutaneous candidiasis patient was treated with suspension of candida isolate and C + KI at 37°C for 30 minutes then sub‑cultured to note variations in colony counts. The data was analyzed by Fishers exact test using Graphpad Prism 5 version 5.00 (California USA) Results: i) KI like BA or CS showed hemagglutination. ii) C‑mediated hemolysis was inhibited in presence of KI. iii) C‑mediated lysis of S. typhi was partially enhanced by KI showing reduced number of colonies; iv) while lysis of candida was reduced. Conclusions: KI increases avidity of some immune reactions including C‑mediated cell lysis. An increase or decrease of cell‑lysis resulted by KI probably mediates by altered access of C‑binding receptors. Thus, hypothetically, a non‑protective Splendore Hoeppli‑like deposit around fungus may turn into protective immune mechanism by influence of KI. A neutrino factory has unparalleled physics reach for the discovery and measurement of CP violation in the neutrino sector. A far detector for a neutrino factory must have good charge identification with excellent background rejection and a large mass. An elegant solution is to construct a magnetized iron neutrino detector (MIND) along the lines of MINOS, where iron plates provide a toroidal magnetic field and scintillator planes provide 3D space points. In this paper, the current status of a simulation of a toroidal MIND for a neutrino factory is discussed in light of the recent measurements of large theta(13). The response and performance using the 10 GeV neutrino factory configuration are presented. It is shown that this setup has equivalent delta(CP) reach to a MIND with a dipole field and is sensitive to the discovery of CP violation over 85% of the values of delta(CP)., The authors acknowledge the support of the European Community under the European Commission Framework Programme 7 Design Study: EUROnu, Project No. 212372. Gastric acid has an important pathophysiological role in human beings. Numerous methods have been evaluated over the years in an attempt to measure gastric acid and stomach acidity, to study the role of gastric acid in gastrointestinal diseases in humans and to evaluate the effects of acid suppressing drugs. To review methods that have been used to measure gastric acid and gastric acidity.Searches of the electronic databases PUBMED, MEDLINE and EMBASE, were performed with articles restricted to English language and human subjects. References were also identified from the bibliographies of selected articles. Methods for measuring gastric acid include both invasive and non-invasive techniques. Invasive tests include the conventional gastric acid aspiration tests, gastric pH measurement techniques and endoscopic methods. Non-invasive methods use urinary analysis, breath analysis, serum pepsinogens assay, scintigraphic techniques, impedence tomography and alkaline tide for measurement of gastric acid.Several methods of measuring gastric acid exist. Invasive tube tests are uncomfortable and time consuming, whereas most of the non-invasive methods are at best semiquantitative and useful in detecting low or absent acid secretion. Further attempts to explore new methods for measuring gastric acid are therefore warranted.

A wide spectrometer bandwidth was used to ensure that the entire velocity range of the infall region was covered by the recorded spectra (i.e., ±5000 km s−1). To minimize the effects of bandpass ripples, the sources were observed in the double‐position‐switched mode. We detected HI in several clusters, some in emission, some in absorption.

We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130◦ ≤ l ≤ 230◦ and −50◦ ≤ b ≤ −10◦). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (ν < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature Te from Hα and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained Te ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% ( fd = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5±1.5 GHz.We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field., The development of Planck has been supported by: ESA; CNES and CNRS/INSU-IN2P3-INP (France); ASI, CNR, and INAF (Italy); NASA and DoE (USA); STFC and UKSA (UK); CSIC, MICINN and JA (Spain); Tekes, AoF and CSC (Finland); DLR and MPG (Germany); CSA (Canada); DTU Space (Denmark); SER/SSO (Switzerland); RCN (Norway); SFI (Ireland); FCT/MCTES (Portugal); and PRACE (EU).

A 16-year-old female was referred to by her general practitioner (GP) with a history of irregular heavy bleeding per vaginum for last 8 months. She and her mother described the bleeding as haemorrhaging. Her GP prescribed one Depo-Provera injection and then the combined oral contraceptive pill but they did not control her bleeding. Her menarche was at age 11. Before the episode of bleeding she had had a regular menstrual cycle. Initially she denied any pregnancy but subsequently she admitted that she had had a complete miscarriage a year previously at 7 weeks gestation. Because of her heavy bleeding she was admitted to the ward. A urine test was positive for pregnancy (Clearview Unipath UK). The serum beta-hCG level was > 10/5 i/l. An ultrasound scan showed an enlarged uterus with a 4.7 x 4.0 x 2.7-cm mass within the cavity. Her bleeding was heavy enough to drop her haemoglobin level from 10.0 g/dl to 8.0 g/dl within 3 days and she was transfused 3 units of blood. No abnormality was detected on chest X-ray. The oral contraceptive pill was stopped. (excerpt)

- Abstract
We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130 degrees <= l <= 230 degrees and -50 degrees <= b <= -10 degrees). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (nu < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature T-e from Ha and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained T-e ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% (f(d) = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5 +/- 1.5 GHz. We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field.
