Abstract

The cities in Southeast Asian and Small Island Developing States have distorted the natural environment by haphazardly constructing roads, buildings, and other infrastructures. Such massive changes in the environment are altering the ecology, creating sustainable development challenges such as climate-related extreme weather events. Super Typhoon Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on November 8, 2013, that caused physical and psychological illnesses to the affected. To prevent these impacts and make cities sustainably develop and Climate Change (CC) resilient, a Science and Policy Framework (SPF) piloting Quezon City Local Government (QCLG) is developed. The application of SPF revealed, among others, the QCLG institutional and personnel adaptive capacities, threat level of CC-related hazards on development growth sectors and institutional and personnel relative vulnerabilities. These findings allowed QCLG to develop sectoral Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP) 2017-2027 to mainstream CC Adaptation (CCA) at the very early stages of development planning. The SPF and LCCAP are flexible and fashioned toward enhancing key development sectors in creating sustainable and CCA-resilient Cities. They can be globally-effective tools for achieving the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and targets of the Sendai Framework. Abstract

A patient with a prosthetic joint infection (PJI) complicated with deep surgical site infection due to vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis. The initial treatment consisted of 10 days with daptomycin plus ampicillin. The hip prosthesis was retained and salvaged with six outpatient sequential doses of oritavancin 1200 mg every seven days without intra-articular irrigation or other surgical interventions. The patient was ambulating independently without symptoms after ten months of the last treatment of oritavancin.

Abstract

Pneumococcal Surface Protein A (PspA) has been successfully tested as vaccine candidate against Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. Vaccines able to induce PspA-specific antibodies and Th1 cytokines usually provide protection in mice. We have shown that the whole cell pertussis vaccine (wP) or components from acellular pertussis vaccines, such as Pertussis Toxin or Filamentous Hemagglutinin (FHA), are good adjuvants to PspA, suggesting that combined pertussis-PspA vaccines would be interesting strategies against the two infections. Here, we evaluated the potential of wP as a delivery vector to PspA. Bordetella pertussis strains producing a PspA from clade 4 (PspA4Pro) fused to the N-terminal region of FHA (Fha44) were constructed and inactivated with formaldehyde for the production of wPPspA4Pro. Subcutaneous immunization of mice with wPPspA4Pro induced low levels of anti-PspA4 IgG, even after 3 doses, and did not protect against a lethal pneumococcal challenge. Prime-boost strategies using wPPspA4Pro and PspA4Pro showed that there was no advantage in using the wPPspA4Pro vaccine. Immunization of mice with purified PspA4Pro induced higher levels of antibodies and protection against pneumococcal infection than the prime-boost strategies. Finally, purified Fha44:PspA4Pro induced high levels of anti-PspA4Pro IgG, but no protection, suggesting that the antibodies induced by the fusion protein were not directed to protective epitopes.

Abstract

A 39 year-old male was residing along the south coast of Texas, the USA, presented with fever, myalgias, headaches, and weight loss for ten days. Symptoms and manifestations progressed to include nuchal rigidity, photophobia, hyponatremia, thrombocytopenia, and transaminitis despite the intravenous administration of ceftriaxone and azithromycin. A lumbar puncture performed in the Emergency Department yielded pleocytosis and glucose cerebrospinal fluid/serum ratio of 0.35, suggestive of meningoencephalitis. Conglomerate data raised the suspicion of meningitis secondary to a zoonotic acquired infection, which was later confirmed to be Rickettsia typhi. Doxycycline is the drug of choice for the suspected Rickettsia disease. After doxycycline administration, the patient improved and was discharged home asymptomatic.

Abstract

A 38-year-old African American male presented with progressive pain, swelling, numbness, and warmth of the left upper extremity ten days before admission. A chest computerized tomography scan showed a large 8.3 cm × 6.1 cm x 9.9 cm anterior mediastinal mass with compression of the left brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava. A venous doppler showed multiple occlusive venous thrombi in bilateral upper extremities, including the bilateral internal jugular and subclavian veins, as well as the left subclavian, axillary, cephalic, brachial and median cubital veins.Further laboratory workup came positive for acetylcholine receptor binding antibody suggesting myasthenia gravis, but the patient was asymptomatic for myasthenia gravis. A percutaneous core CT guided biopsy pathology resulted in a predominant T-cell population CD5 positive with few B cells; the immunophenotypic features suggested Type B2 thymoma. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the only reported thymoma presenting with bilateral deep vein thrombosis of the upper extremities. The deep vein thrombosis therapy was enoxaparin 1mg/kg subcutaneously every 12 hours and dexamethasone 4mg intravenously every 4 hours as an anti-inflammatory drug for thymoma related compression of the mediastinum. The patient was referred to a tertiary oncological medical center for a total thymectomy, chemotherapy, and adjuvant radiotherapy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the variables (lost rallies and score difference) that determine the timeout effect (positive or no effect) in volleyball, in balanced and unbalanced sets. 232 timeouts, requested by the coaches of 66 male and female teams participating in the Spanish Championship in the Under-14 and Under-16 categories, were analysed. The variables considered in this study were timeout effects, lost rallies and score differences. To analyse the timeout effect, a binary logistic regression model was applied. The results of this model show that, in balanced sets, the variables that predict the timeout effect are the number of rallies (≤2 lost rallies) and the score difference (2–3 points), whilst in unbalanced sets, and the variable that predicts the timeout effect is the number of lost rallies (3 lost rallies). These results show the importance of bearing these variables in mind when timeouts are managed and requested by coaches, in order to optimise the team’s performance.

58. Keeping the Faith: Filipino Catholic Responses to the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Since March 2020, Metro Manila and other places in the Philippines has been on lockdownbecause of the surge of Covid-19 cases in the country. Even churches and other places ofworship have been off-limits to church goers during strict lockdown measures called “EnhancedCommunity Quarantine.” This paper looks at how Filipino Catholics practice their religiousobligations during the pandemic. Since majority (81%) of Filipinos are Roman Catholics, thefocus of this paper is how Filipino Catholics view the Covid-19 pandemic and how they copewith it. The data for this study comes from two sources: 1) interviews with church leaders andlay members; and 2) online and offlne ethnographic observation of religious practices duringthe pandemic. Through an anthropological description of Filipino Catholic attitudes on andresponses to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have a better understanding about Filipino resiliencyin times of crises.

Abstract

Renewable energy (RE) utilization is expected to increase in the coming years due to its decreasing costs and the mounting socio-political pressure to decarbonize the world’s energy systems. On the other hand, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are on track to hit the target 100 USD/kWh price in the next decade due to economy of scale and manufacturing process improvements, evident in the rise in Li-ion gigafactories. The forecast of RE and Li-ion technology costs is important for planning RE integration into existing energy systems. Previous cost predictions on Li-ion batteries were conducted using conventional learning curve models based on a single factor, such as either installed capacity or innovation activity. A two-stage learning curve model was recently investigated wherein mineral costs were taken as a factor for material cost to set the floor price, and material cost was a major factor for the battery pack price. However, these models resulted in the overestimation of future prices. In this work, the future prices of Li-ion nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) battery packs - a battery chemistry of choice in the electric vehicle and stationary grid storage markets - were projected up to year 2025 using multi-factor learning curve models. Among the generated models, the two-factor learning curve model has the most realistic and statistically sound results having learning rates of 21.18% for battery demand and 3.0% for innovation. By year 2024, the projected price would fall below the 100 USD/kWh industry benchmark battery pack price, consistent with most market research predictions. Techno-economic case studies on the microgrid applications of the forecasted prices of Li-ion NMC batteries were conducted. Results showed that the decrease in future prices of Li-ion NMC batteries would make 2020 and 2023 the best years to start investing in an optimum (solar photovoltaic + wind + diesel generator + Li-ion NMC) and 100% RE (solar photovoltaic + wind + Li-ion NMC) off-grid energy system, respectively. A hybrid grid-tied (solar photovoltaic + grid + Li-ion NMC) configuration is the best grid-tied energy system under the current net metering policy, with 2020 being the best year to deploy the investment.

The industrial sector is a major contributor to the economic growth of the Philippines. However, it is also one of the top consumers of energy, which is produced mainly from fossil fuels. The Philippine industrial sector must therefore be supported economically while minimizing the emissions associated with energy consumption. A potential strategy for minimizing costs and emissions is the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on the rooftops of industrial facilities, but this approach is hindered by existing energy policies in the country. In this work, we performed a techno-economic assessment on the implementation of rooftop solar PV in Philippine industrial facilities under different policy scenarios. Our study considered 139 randomly sampled industrial plants under MERALCO franchise area in the Philippines. Under the current net metering policy, 132 of the evaluated facilities were economically viable for the integration of rooftop solar PV. This corresponds to an additional 1035 MWp of solar PV capacity and the avoidance of 8.4 million tons of CO2 emissions with minimal financial risk. In comparison, an expanded net metering policy supports the deployment of 4653 MWp of solar PV and the avoidance of 38 million tons of CO2. By enabling an enhanced net metering policy, the widespread application of rooftop solar PV may present considerable savings and emission reduction for energy-intensive industries (electrical and semiconductors, cement and concrete, steel and metals, and textile and garments) and lower generation costs for less energy intensive industries (construction and construction materials, transportation and logistics, and food and beverages).

Abstract

Philippine off-grid islands are mostly electrified by diesel generators, resulting in costly electricity that is interrupted by fuel supply disruptions. The archipelagic nature of the country also impedes off-grid electrification due to the high capital cost of grid extension. Transitioning from diesel-only systems to hybrid renewable energy systems and interconnecting the island microgrids can solve these problems while promoting cleaner energy production. In this work, a comparative study on decentralized and clustered hybrid renewable energy system microgrids in the Polillo group of islands in the Philippines, using HOMER Pro, was performed. Microgrids comprising solar photovoltaics, lithium-ion battery energy storage, and diesel generators were designed on each island. Clustered systems encompassing multiple islands in the island group were simulated by also considering the least-cost interconnection paths. The techno-economics of each decentralized or clustered system and the four-island system were evaluated based on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Reliability was assessed using the change in LCOE upon the failure of a component and during weather disturbances. Transitioning from diesel-only systems to hybrid systems reduces generation costs by an average of 42.01% and increases the renewable energy share to 80%. Interconnecting the hybrid systems results in an average increase of 2.34% in generation costs due to the cost of submarine cables but improves system reliability and reduces the optimum solar photovoltaic and lithium-ion storage installations by 6.66% and 8.71%, respectively. This research serves as a framework for the interconnection pre-feasibility analysis of other small off-grid islands.

Abstract

Cryptococcus species (other than Cryptococcus neoformans) have been labeled as saprophytic and nonpathogenic in immunocompetent individuals in the past. In recent years, infections caused by non-neoformans Cryptococcus species have been recognized. Cryptococcus laurentii is known to be a rare human pathogen. In this case report, we present a 59-year-old man who did not have HIV infection with meningoencephalitis caused by Cryptococcus laurentii. No significant underlying immunosuppressive disorder was found. The only identifiable risk factors were that the patient was a farmer with previous exposure to pigeon droppings. Here, we describe what we believe to be the fifth reported case of meningitis caused by Cryptococcus laurentii.

Abstract

Infection with nontyphoidal Salmonella is traditionally characterized by intestinal manifestations. However, extra-intestinal infections are known to occur, with purulent pericarditis associated with cardiac tamponade being rare. This case report is of a 57-year-old male with Crohn’s disease initiated on infliximab therapy two months prior to presentation. He presented with recurrent chest pain and a single occurrence of fever. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed a pericardial effusion. An echocardiogram confirmed the presence of the fluid with tamponade physiology, requiring immediate surgical decompression. The pericardial fluid culture grew Salmonella enterica, despite the patient having only a single episode of fever, disproportionate to the severity of the infection. Conceivably, the lack of systemic symptoms may be attributed to recent infliximab therapy. Upon conducting a literature review, immunosuppressive factors seem to play a significant role in nontyphoid Salmonella enterica pericardial effusion presenting with cardiac tamponade.

Murine typhus, also known as endemic typhus, is a disease resulting from an infection caused by the gram-negative bacillus Rickettsia typhi. Murine typhus is identified worldwide, predominantly in tropical and subtropical geographic locations. Transmission occurs through direct inoculation by an arthropod vector, most commonly the rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis. rickettsial infections are notorious for disseminated infections throughout the endothelial cells. The increase in permeability is an immediate consequence and has the potential of leading to non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, otherwise known as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Clinical manifestations are non-specific and initially mimic typical viral etiologies, obscuring early diagnosis. As a result, clinicians often do not include rickettsial infections in their differential diagnoses. Definitive diagnosis is based on clinical recognition, epidemiologic awareness, and serological testing. Here we present a confirmed case of murine typhus in a young non-immunocompromised patient who developed ARDS one week from the initial onset of symptoms. Energy poverty or lack of access to electricity is still a pressing development challenge worldwide particularly in archipelagic countries like the Philippines and Indonesia. As rural electrification in these remote areas through on-grid extension becomes costly, these communities typically resort to diesel-powered off-grid generators, characterized by high operating costs, unstable supply and price of fuel, and environmental issues. The deployment of clean energy alternatives is clearly needed, but these must be selected systematically using multiple but possibly conflicting criteria. Currently, the decision on which technology to use is derived based on the levelized cost of electricity primarily. In this illustrative case study, a novel multi-criteria decision-making methodology is proposed for the selection of the most appropriate energy system for the off-grid electrification of Marinduque Island. Eight technology combination options were evaluated using six criteria covering socio-economic, environmental, and technical aspects. Fuzzy AHP was used to derive weights of the criteria while addressing ambiguity and subjectivity of decision-makers. Performances of the technology options across different criteria were determined quantitatively via techno-economic simulations, or qualitatively via domain expert estimates. Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) was then used to aggregate the entire range of performance attributes of each alternative into a single score. Results indicate that system reliability and social acceptability are the most important criteria in selecting hybrid energy systems for off-grid electrification. Among the eight alternatives, the fuel saver (diesel-solar PV hybrid) and diesel-solar PV-Li-ion hybrid systems yield the highest performance scores. The prioritization was mainly affected by system reliability and social acceptability, indicating that decision making for the attainment of sustainable island energy supply should not be limited to technical and economic considerations only. This is consistent with the current worldwide trend of implementing the diesel-solar PV-Li-ion hybrid systems in off-grid areas, thus, validating the applicability of the facile methodology developed in this work.

Introduction Radio telemetry, one of the most widely used techniques for tracking wildlife and fisheries populations, has a false-positive problem. Bias from false-positive detections can affect many important derived metrics, such as home range estimation, site occupation, survival, and migration timing. False-positive removal processes have relied upon simple filters and personal opinion. To overcome these shortcomings, we have developed BIOTAS (BIOTelemetry Analysis Software) to assist with false-positive identification, removal, and data management for large-scale radio telemetry projects. Methods BIOTAS uses a naïve Bayes classifier to identify and remove false-positive detections from radio telemetry data. The semi-supervised classifier uses spurious detections from unknown tags and study tags as training data. We tested BIOTAS on four scenarios: wide-band receiver with a single Yagi antenna, wide-band receiver that switched between two Yagi antennas, wide-band receiver with a single dipole antenna, and single-band receiver that switched between five frequencies. BIOTAS has a built in a k-fold cross-validation and assesses model quality with sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, false-positive rate, and precision-recall area under the curve. BIOTAS also assesses concordance with a traditional consecutive detection filter using Cohen’s $$\kappa$$ κ . Results Overall BIOTAS performed equally well in all scenarios and was able to discriminate between known false-positive detections and valid study tag detections with low false-positive rates ( Conclusion As part of a robust data management plan, BIOTAS is able to discriminate between detections from study tags and known false positives. BIOTAS works with multiple manufacturers and accounts for receivers that switch between antennas and frequencies. BIOTAS provides the framework for transparent, objective, and repeatable telemetry projects for wildlife conservation surveys, and increases the efficiency of data processing.

The aim of this work was to study the effects of different vegetable oil supplements on growth performance, carcass quality and meat quality in beef steers reared under intensive conditions. Abstract

Geographic isolation limits energy access in remote Philippine islands. Among the few islands electrified, most are powered by diesel, a costly and unsustainable electricity source. Efforts on energy access should therefore consider affordable and sustainable renewable energy (RE) technologies. In this study, we simulated solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power integration in 147 diesel-powered Philippine off-grid areas. Different configurations of solar PV, wind turbines, lithium-ion batteries, and diesel generators were evaluated based on levelized electricity costs and RE shares. The simulations show that solar PV should be utilized in all areas considered and wind power in 132 areas to guarantee reliable and continuous energy access with minimal costs. The hybrid energy systems have an average electricity cost of USD 0.227/kWh, an average RE share of 58.58 %, and a total annual savings of 108 million USD. The sensitivity analysis also shows that dependence on solar and wind power in Philippine off-grid islands is robust against uncertainties in component costs and electricity demand. With the promising off-grid solar PV and wind power potential in the country, policies that support RE-based hybrid grids should be implemented to address the trilemma of energy security, equity, and sustainability.

Abstract

We report the first VA-VAV-VV ECMO conversion in a 57-year-old Filipino female with persistent coronary insufficiency from toxic shock syndrome due to Streptococcus pyogenes bacteremia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and Harlequin syndrome with progressive acute limb ischemia from cone snail venom poisoning. The patient came in via air ambulance transport because deteriorating clinical status after having stepped on a cone snail 3 days prior and developing severe dehydration from vomiting and passage of voluminous watery stools after eating a local delicacy. The patient was admitted at the ICU where after 3 days of treatment, the patient developed cardiac tamponade and underwent stat pleuropericardial windowing with pericardiocentesis. Due to increasing pressor requirements from the combined shock, Swan-Ganz catheterization was inserted and a VA-ECMO system was set up. There was gradual improvement in cardiac hemodynamics, however oxygen requirement was increasing and both lower extremities became progressively violaceous with decreasing pulses. Harlequin syndrome was ruled in, the multidisciplinary team decided to convert to VAV hybrid circuit by adding a venous access by way of the right internal jugular vein. Improvement in oxygenation lead to eventual conversion from VAV to purely VV dedicated circuit. Ultrafiltration via ECMO was likewise done because of worsening azotemia and oliguria. The patient was then gradually weaned off from ECMO and was successfully decannulated after 8 days. Below knee amputation was done to address the progressive acute limb ischemia. The patient was nutritionally built up and physically rehabilitated and was eventually discharged improved on the 28th hospital day.

Abstract

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Use Lead-DBS software to analyze stereotactical surgical outcome of an operated population and demonstrate that small target deviations do not compromise the stimulation of desired structures, even with small amperages. METHODS: Image exams of patients submitted to deep brain stimulation for movement disorders treatment were processed in Lead-DBS software. Electrode stereotactic coordinates were subtracted from the planned target and those deviations, compared among different anatomical targets and sides operated firstly and secondly. We also quantified the frequency of relation between the activated tissue volume and the planned target through computer simulations. RESULTS: None of the 16 electrodes were exactly implanted at the planned coordinates. A stimulation of 3 mA reached 62.5% of the times the planned coordinates, rising to 68.75% with a 3,5 mA. No statistical significance was demonstrated in any comparison of laterality and anatomical sites. CONCLUSIONS: The simulation of small amperage fields could reach the intended target even when electrode placement is suboptimal. Furthermore, such a goal can be achieved without overlapping the volume of activated tissue with undesired structures. Software Lead-DBS proved to be a valuable complementary asset for surgical stereotactical result assessment.

Abstract

Objetivos. Analisar os efeitos da educação em saúde em pacientes com Diabetes Mellitus atendidos no Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu-RJ, visando ampliar o conhecimento sobre o cuidado integral e interdisciplinar a respeito da doença. Método. Foi elaborado questionário com perguntas contemplando conhecimento sobre a doença, fatores de risco, formas de controle e tratamento e percepção de risco. Sua aplicação foi realizada em 77 pacientes, em três momentos distinto, pré e pós a realização das palestras e via contato telefônico três meses após a realização das mesmas. Foi utilizado o Teste de McNemar para identificar a retenção do conhecimento pelos pacientes à curto e médico prazo. Resultados. Houve mudança significante em 100% das respostas dos participantes, imediatamente após as oficinas educativas, demonstrando ampliação no conhecimento sobre a doença. Três meses após a intervenção educativa não houve mudança significativamente estatística, demonstrando que a retenção do aprendizado foi eficaz a ponto de perdurar nesse intervalo de tempo. Conclusões. Neste estudo, o intervalo de tempo entre a aplicação do questionário e a realização do recurso educacional não promoveu perda de aprendizado pelos participantes.

Abstract

There are very few studies in ruminants characterizing mammary and adipose tissue (AT) expression of genes and gene networks for diets causing variations in milk fatty acid (FA) composition without altering milk fat secretion, and even less complementing this information with data on tissue FA profiles. This work was conducted in sheep in order to investigate the response of the mammary gland and the subcutaneous and perirenal AT, in terms of FA profile and mRNA abundance of genes involved in lipid metabolism, to a diet known to modify milk FA composition. Ten lactating Assaf ewes were randomly assigned to two treatments consisting of a total mixed ration based on alfalfa hay and a concentrate (60 : 40) supplemented with 0 (control diet) or 25 (SO diet) g of sunflower oil/kg of diet dry matter for 7 weeks. Milk composition, including FA profile, was analysed after 48 days on treatments. On day 49, the animals were euthanized and tissue samples were collected to analyse FA and mRNA abundance of 16 candidate genes. Feeding SO did not affect animal performance but modified milk FA composition. Major changes included decreases in the concentration of FA derived from de novo synthesis (e.g. 12:0, 14:0 and 16:0) and increases in that of long-chain FA (e.g. 18:0, c9-18:1, trans-18:1 isomers and c9,t11-CLA); however, they were not accompanied by significant variations in the mRNA abundance of the studied lipogenic genes (i.e. ACACA, FASN, LPL, CD36, FABP3, SCD1 and SCD5) and transcription factors (SREBF1 and PPARG), or in the constituent FA of mammary tissue. Regarding the FA composition of AT, the little influence of SO did not appear to be linked to changes in gene mRNA abundance (decreases of GPAM and SREBF1 in both tissues, and of PPARG in the subcutaneous depot). Similarly, the great variation between AT (higher contents of saturated FA and trans-18:1 isomers in the perirenal, and of cis-18:1, c9,t11-CLA and n-3 PUFA in the subcutaneous AT) could not be related to differences in gene mRNA abundance due to tissue site (higher LPL and CD36, and lower SREBF1 in perirenal than in subcutaneous AT). Overall, these results suggest a marginal contribution of gene expression to the nutritional regulation of lipid metabolism in these tissues, at least with the examined diets and after 7 weeks on treatments. It cannot be ruled out, however, that the response to SO is mediated by other genes or post-transcriptional mechanisms.

Abstract

Most existing research about complex systems maintenance assumes they consist of the same type of components. However, systems can be assembled with heterogeneous components (for example degrading and non-degrading components) that require different maintenance actions. Since industrial systems become more and more complex, more research about the maintenance of systems with heterogeneous components is needed. For this reason, in this paper, a system consisting of two groups of components: degrading and non-degrading components is analyzed. The main novelty of this paper is the evaluation of a maintenance policy at system-level coordinating condition-based maintenance for the degrading components, delay time to the maintenance and an inspection strategy for this heterogeneous system. To that end, an analytic cost model is built using the semi-regenerative processes theory. Furthermore, a safety constraint related to the reliability of the degrading components is imposed. To find the optimal maintenance strategy, meta-heuristic algorithms are used.

El envejecimiento es la perdida progresiva y gradual de nuestras funciones fisiológicas debido al paso de los años; conduce a una disminución de la salud y de la sensación de bienestar, aumentando el riesgo de contraer enfermedades y la probabilidad de muerte. En la actualidad hay cada vez más interés en el estudio del envejecimiento humano y surgen muchas preguntas, que necesitan respuestas que nos hagan comprender mejor el complejo proceso que lleva a la senectud. El envejecimiento es un proceso complejo y multifactorial que resulta de la acumulación de varios cambios funcionales y estéticos en el organismo que se producen en el tiempo. La piel también se ve afectada por estos cambios a través de factores intrínsecos y extrínsecos. La percepción de la edad, así como la belleza, dependen en gran medida de la exposición de la piel al medio ambiente. El envejecimiento intrínseco o el envejecimiento biológico es un proceso inevitable, genéticamente determinado, que progresa lentamente a medida que avanzamos en edad, pero puede acelerarse por factores ambientales. Los principales factores responsables del envejecimiento extrínseco son la exposición solar y el consumo de tabaco. No se trata solo, por tanto, de procesos celulares, sino que es también una respuesta al proceso de adaptación a los factores externos propios del medio ambiente. El objetivo de esta revisión es conocer mejor cuáles son los mecanismos responsables del envejecimiento intrínseco e identificar los principales factores extrínsecos que influyen en el mismo, y cómo éstos pueden acelerar los procesos celulares biológicos.As human life expectancy increases, more interesting studies arise in order to better understand the complex process that aging involves. The perception of age is largely dependent on the appearance of exposed skin. Aging is a complex and multifactorial process resulting in the accumulation of several functional and aesthetic changes in an organism over time. The skin is also affected by these changes through intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic aging or biological aging is an inevitable process, genetically determined that progresses slowly over the years as we age. It can be accelerated by environmental factors. The main factors responsible for extrinsic aging are primally cumulative sun-exposure and tobacco smoke. Aging is not only about the cellular processes involved, but it is also a response to the adaptation of environmental stressors. The focus of this review is to better understand the mechanisms responsible for the intrinsic aging and to identify the principal extrinsic factors and how they can accelerate the cellular processes.

97. Literature Circle: A Strategy in Improving Critical Thinking Skills

Abstract

Reading is the prime foundation of one’s academic and social status. However, this vital skill is what most students lack attention and interest. As a result, it deteriorates their critical thinking skills. To address the problem, Harvey Daniel introduced his literature circle strategy. It showcases different features that likely aid student’s struggles in the aspect of reading. This study, therefore, aims to determine the effectiveness of the literature circle strategy in improving critical thinking skills in reading among students at the University of Cebu-Banilad Campus. The study utilized a quasi-experimental method where the 48 ABM Grade 12 research subjects of the study were divided into two groups, namely: control and experimental. Strategies employed in these groups were different. The traditional method was practiced in the control group, while the literature circle strategy was implemented in the experimental group. For data gathering, a researcher-made test about the short story “Dead Stars” by Paz Marquez Benitez was used as the main instrument. Another short story entitled “The Small Key” by Paz Latorena was used as a springboard in the implementation of strategies for both groups. Statistical treatments used for data analysis were simple percent, t-test for Correlational Samples, and t-test for Two Independent Samples. Findings revealed that in measuring subjects’ critical thinking skills in reading, there is a significant difference between the posttest performances of the groups. The research subjects under experimental group performed higher than the control group. The study concludes that literature circle strategy is effective in enhancing student’s critical thinking skills in reading.

Abstract

Introdução: O polegar é o dedo de maior importância funcional da mão, por isso a justificativa de reimplantação e reabilitação do mesmo. Objetivo: Realizar uma análise retrospectiva dos resultados, via revisão de prontuários de pacientes submetidos í reimplante de polegar, realizados pelo Serviço SOS-Reimplante do Hospital Estadual Adão Pereira Nunes. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo com amostra de conveniência, abrangendo o perí­odo entre janeiro de 2010 a dezembro de 2015, realizado através de prontuários de pacientes submetidos a processo de reimplante de polegar, atendidos no Serviço de Terapia Ocupacional/TO-Mão no Hospital estadual Adão Pereira Nunes, em Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. Foram coletadas informações sociodemográficas, além de força muscular, sensibilidade e tempo de reabilitação. Resultados: Foram revisados 63 prontuários de pacientes submetidos a procedimento de reimplante de polegar, na faixa etária de 18 a 65 anos. Quanto ao local do acidente, 76,1% dos casos foi decorrente de acidente de trabalho e 23,2% acidentes domésticos. Ao observamos í lateralidade da lesão, 92% dos pacientes eram destros, enquanto o polegar com maior número de lesões foi o esquerdo, com um total de 82,5% pacientes. Quanto ao ní­vel da lesão, 25,3% pacientes sofreram lesão na falange proximal, 20,8% pacientes sofreram lesão na região da interfalangeana, e 53,9% dos pacientes apresentaram lesão na falange distal. Dentre os reencaminhados para nova avaliação, 28,5% pacientes, foram submetidos a outros procedimentos cirúrgicos. Houve ganho de força em global em 88,2% dos pacientes em de sensibilidade. Conclusão: A maioria dos pacientes que sofreram reimplante do polegar conseguiram obter ganho de força muscular e sensibilidade, conseguirem retornar as suas atividades laborais, com um tempo de reabilitação que variou de 4 a 14 meses.Palavras-chave: terapia da mão, reabilitação, reimplante.
