Abstract The problem of management and treatment of wastewater from commercial laundries is a matter of concern. The present study provides an effective and eco-friendly solution to the treatment of wastewater from commercial laundries in Quebec (Canada) by using the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) as a bio-flocculant. EPS was produced from the valorization of crude glycerol and paper mill sludge by a bacterial strain (BS-04). Two different types of EPS: Slime EPS (S-EPS) and Broth EPS (B-EPS) were used for the treatment of commercial laundry wastewater (CLWW). This is the first study for the treatment of CLWW using bio-flocculant EPS. A comparison between the conventional treatment of laundry wastewater (LWW) by chemical coagulants (FeSO4, CaCl2, Alum) and enhanced treatment by bio-flocculant EPS has been drawn in the study. Moreover, LWW treatment by a combination of EPS and chemical coagulants was also investigated. It was observed that S-EPS (0.6 g/L) gave better flocculation activity (FA) than B-EPS. S-EPS alone can remove 83.20% of turbidity, 77.69% of suspended solids (SS), and 76.37% of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The best results were obtained by combining S-EPS (0.6 g/L) with alum (300 mg/L) at pH 7 for a treatment time of 30 min. This combination was able to remove 98% of turbidity, 95.42% of SS, and 83.08% of COD from LWW. When treatment time has been increased to 4 h at pH 7, it resulted in more than 88% COD removal from CLWW. Graphical Abstract

This article deals with the exploration of the design of network crosslinked structure by covalent bonding for use as wound dressing materials keeping in view inherent therapeutic role of neem gum in wound healing. These copolymeric hydrogels were prepared by graft-copolymerization reaction of carbopol and poly (N-vinylpyrrolidone) (poly (NVP). Antibiotic drug levofloxacin was encapsulated in dressings for better wound healing. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques were applied for characterization. NMR and FTIR demonstrated incorporation of carbapol and poly (NVP) in dressings. XRD indicated amorphous state in copolymeric dressings. Interactions of copolymers with drug, blood and bio membrane were studied to evaluate biomedical properties which revealed controlled release of drug from hydrogel dressings which were possessing blood-compatible (haemolytic value ​= ​2.45 ​± ​0.82) and mucoadhesive (detachment force ​= ​124 ​± ​41 ​mN) properties. Dressings were permeable to O2 and H2O vapour and absorbed 6.68 ​± ​0.62 ​g/g wound fluid which is ideal dressing characteristic. Diffusion mechanism type of drug levofloxacin was Fickian with kinetic model First order. These properties suggested use of hydrogel material for wound dressing and drug delivery applications for better wound care management.

The present work demonstrates the effect of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) (2 mm Orifice plate) as a pretreatment for egg white protein hydrolysates (EWPH) production. The obtained EWPH was evaluated for various physiochemical (degree of hydrolysis), functional (emulsifying, foaming), structural and nutritional properties (antioxidant activity and in-vitro digestibility). The egg white solutions (5% solid content) were pretreated for 10, 15 and 20 min with HC and later hydrolyzed using papain enzyme for 90 min. The structural analysis revealed that HC unfolded the protein structure which was confirmed through the formation of β-sheet (from 15 to 46%) and loss of α-helix (34 to 14%) content with increasing treatment time. Through the exposure of hydrophobic bonds, the degree of hydrolysis and surface hydrophobicity increased, which eventually improved the nutritional and functional properties of EWPH. The HC-15 min treated samples had the highest zeta potential (-25.4 mV) with the lowest average particle size (346.5 nm) and denaturation temperature (70.67°C). Further increase in treatment time led to instability of hydrolysates. HC effectively improved the functional and nutritional properties of EWPH and a treatment time of 15 min is recommended for obtaining EWPH with improved properties.

Iron toxicity originated from excess ferrous ion (Fe2+) availability within plant growth medium remains a potent stress severely limiting rice productivity via alteration of photosynthetic and metabolic processes. Silicon (Si) or potassium (K) individually can enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, including metal toxicity. However, their combined mitigation effects lack proper exploration even though greater alleviation potential could possibly be achieved. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential of combined application of Si and K in mitigating Fe2+ toxicity impairments to rice leaf mesophyll tissue. The experiment was laid out in a factorial combination of two Fe2+ levels (0 and 300 mg L−1), two Si levels (0 and 56 mg L−1), and two K levels (0 and 200 mg L−1) following a completely randomized design. Excess Fe2+ impaired leaf mesophyll performance by negatively affecting all tested parameters; however, Si and K significantly reduced those impairments. The integrated application of Si and K resulted in the maximum mitigation effects as high as 23%, 27%, 14%, 40%, 25%, 37%, 24%, 48%, 34%, 28%, 41%, and 15% for total chlorophyll content, maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, membrane stability index, relative cell death, lipid peroxidation, total protein content, free proline content, total polyphenol content, hydrogen peroxide content, total antioxidant activity, net photosynthetic rate, and plant biomass, respectively, compared with the control, with 29% decrease in Fe content and 4.2-fold and 1.7-fold respective increase in Si and K content of rice leaf mesophyll. Silicon or K enhanced photosynthetic performance by boosting antioxidant activity, proline content, and polyphenol content, thereby reducing oxidative damages from Fe2+-generated free radicals like hydrogen peroxide; however, K was comparatively more effective than Si. The combined application of Si and K resulted in significantly better Fe2+ toxicity alleviation response over their sole application for the maximum studied traits. The findings would contribute to the present understanding of Fe2+ toxicity alleviation and help in strategizing crop management practices for sustainable rice production in Fe2+-toxic lowlands.

Understanding the thresholds of influencing parameters that favor the habitability of dangerous pests like desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) can aid in early detection and eradication using control operations. The life cycle of the desert locust and its behavioral changes are associated with the weather patterns and the region’s ecosystem settings. This study attempts to retrieve the preferential soil conditions like texture and moisture at the surface and subsurface levels for egg-laying by desert locusts. Towards this, Locust Hub, a comprehensive database of desert locusts maintained and disseminated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation under the Locust Watch program, was used to identify breeding site locations for 2017-2021. In this research, we extracted sand-silt-clay percentage at these breeding sites using SoilGrids ver. 2.0 from the World Soil Information Service database facilitated by International Soil Reference and Information Centre. Similarly, soil moisture conditions extracted from Level-4 data products of the Soil Moisture Active Passive mission for all these breeding sites aided in essaying the optimal soil conditions for the desert locust’s oviposition. This study’s results confirm the sand percentage in a broad range of 55-70% (for 90% of samples), followed by a narrow range of silt and clay with 19-24% and ~14-20%, respectively. Our study reveals that female desert locusts prefer sandy loam-textured soils for oviposition. The preferred range of soil moisture at the surface and subsurface resulted in 5-10% and 10-20%, respectively. These results confirm that dampness is required at the surface soil for initiating the oviposition by female desert locusts. Results from this research can aid in the early identification of breeding grounds during desert locusts’ invasion period.

Key Clinical Message A newborn with a rare form of biliary atresia had posterior fossa bleed and subarachnoid hemorrhage despite vitamin K prophylaxis, indicating biliary atresia is a causality rather than chance. Abstract Biliary atresia frequently causes surgical jaundice, resulting in delayed vitamin K deficiency. We report a 28‐day‐old newborn diagnosed with a rare form of biliary atresia presented with an unusual association of posterior fossa bleed and subarachnoid hemorrhage despite vitamin K prophylaxis. Thus, biliary atresia remains causality rather than chance.

In the present work, an attempt is made to find the most suitable prediction model for Marshall Stability and the optimistic Bitumen Content (BC) in carbon fiber reinforced asphalt concrete for flexible pavements by performing Marshall Stability tests. Further the prediction analysis is performed by taking the cognizance of the published research articles. Twofold approaches are adopted; first, to find the most suitable model to predict the Marshall Stability and second to obtain the optimum binder content responsible for the highest strength. Further, to find the most suitable model for closer prediction of Marshall Stability, eighteen input parameters i.e., Binder Content (BC with fifteen variations); 4.20%, 4.30%, 4.50%, 4.90%, 5.00%, 5.10%, 5.15%, 5.20%, 5.23%, 5.30%, 5.34%, 5.40%, 5.50%, 6.00%, 6.50%, and three others i.e., Carbon fiber, Bitumen grade and Fiber length are applied in the modelling algorithm. Five Machine learning techniques viz., Support Vector Machine, Gaussian Process, Random Forest, Random Tree, and M5P model were employed to find the most suitable prediction model. Seven statistical metrices i.e., Coefficient of correlation (CC), Mean absolute error (MAE), Root mean squared error (RMSE), Relative absolute error (RAE), Root relative squared error (RRSE), Willmott's index (WI), and Nash- Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) were used to evaluate the performance of the applied models. After performing modelling analysis, it has been found that the Random Forest-based model is outperforming amongst all applied models with CC as 0.9735, MAE as 1.1755, RMSE as 1.5046, RAE as 25.68%, RRSE as 26.93%, WI values as 0.9351, and NSE values as 0.9272 in the testing stage. The Taylor diagram of the testing dataset also conforms to the results of RF-based model. The sensitivity analysis demonstrates that binder content (BC) of about 5.0% has a significant influence on the Marshall Stability in the asphalt mix used with carbon fibers.

Aim: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is defined as yellowish discoloration of the skin, conjunctive, and sclera from the elevated serum or plasma bilirubin in the newborn. The standard of care for the management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is phototherapy to prevent long-term neurological sequelae. The aim of this study was to ascertain the predictability of significant rebound hyperbilirubinemia (SRH) in neonates after phototherapy and the factors associated with it. Materials and Methods: Neonates ≥ 35 weeks of gestation, who received treatment for hyperbilirubinemia and admitted in our hospital from 15th of March 2019 to 15th of September 2020 were enrolled after taking parental consent. SRH was defined as bilirubin levels crossing the treatment threshold within 72 hours of phototherapy termination. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictability of SRH. Results: Out of 400 neonates treated with phototherapy, 10% developed SRH. Prematurity (Gestational age < 37 weeks), low birth weight (Birth weight < 2000 gram), ABO and Rh incompatibility, Glucose-6-phophate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) deficiency, sepsis, and longer duration of primary phototherapy were found to be significantly associated with rebound hyperbilirubinemia. The probability of SRH increases for all American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) risk categories as the gestational age decreases and total serum bilirubin at the stoppage of phototherapy increases. Conclusions: The presence of risk factors should be taken into account while planning discharge and follow-up of neonates admitted for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to prevent long-term complication of bilirubin neurotoxicity.

Background and Objective: Newborn screening (NBS) aims towards early detection of congenital disorders or prevention of intellectual and physical defects and life-threatening illness. Three disorders namely congenital hypothyroidism (CH), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G-6-PDD) were selected for a preliminary study for NBS. The study aimed to establish NBS in the Indian scenario that could lay a framework for future such initiatives. Methods: A screening programme was conducted at a tertiary care hospital for 1 year. All the neonates born at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, were screened for their blood levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Heel-prick blood samples were collected within 48–72 h of birth, and the level of these parameters was accessed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Results: A total of 492 neonates were born from January 2020 to December 2020, of which 369 newborns were screened for CAH, CH and G-6-PDD. Of 369 neonates, one case (male) had an increased level of TSH, six cases (all males) had an increased level of 17-OHP and no case was found with G-6-PDD. Interpretation and Conclusions: Preliminary data on the prevalence of various genetic disorders revealed that CAH is the most prevalent disorder followed by CH in the population of Bihar. More efforts need to be undertaken to create awareness and to make screening a successful programme in India. A cost-effective nationwide screening programme is highly recommended for the detection of such cases at the earliest to avoid their future complication.

In this paper, dielectric modulated bilayer electrodes top contact organic field effect transistor (DMBETC-OTFT) is investigated as a biosensing device for label-free detection of biomolecules. The nanocavity used for biomolecule detection is created by etching the oxide in a conventional OTFT device. Neutral and charged biomolecules can be detected by the proposed device using their respective dielectric constants and charge densities. Subthreshold swing (SS), on-current ( $I_{ON}$ ), and on-off current ratio ( $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ) are the main biosensing performance characteristics computed and compared for different gate work function ( $\phi _{m}$ ) and cavity thickness ( $T_{gap}$ ) for the proposed biosensor device. The change in drain current ( $I_{D}$ ), as well as the $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ratio, have both been calculated to investigate the sensitivity of the proposed biosensor. The influence of the gate work function is also investigated to improve the sensitivity of the proposed device. According to the finding of this study, using a gate work function with a lower value results in a significant increase in sensitivity. For charged biomolecules ( $Q_{f}$ = $+1 \times 10^{12}cm^{-2}$ ) with dielectric constant of biomoecules (K = 12), the highest drain current sensitivity is $4.5\times 10^{3}$ . The drain current sensitivity achieved is four times greater, when comparing the proposed device to the latest published work of metal controlled dielectric modulated OTFT-based sensor. The proposed device also has a high $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ sensitivity of $4.60\times 10^{2}$ when $V_{GS}$ = −3.0 V and $V_{DS}$ = −1.5 V. In light of its high sensitivity, low cost, and bio-compatibility, the DMBETC-OTFT biosensor holds great promise for the advancement of new demanding flexible biosensing applications.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) can cause significant morbidity and mortality in children. This study was conducted to assess the pattern and outcome of cardiac abnormalities in MIS-C. This retrospective study was conducted in children with MIS-C between 1 month and 18 years. We enrolled 53 children with a mean age of 7.78 ± 4.62 years. Overall, 35.8% of children with MIS-C had cardiac manifestations in the form of coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) or left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Younger age (P 0.009) and high C-reactive protein at admission (P = 0.001) were significant predictors of cardiac involvement. CAAs were seen in 11.3% of children. On follow-up, 67% and 83% of children showed regression of CAA at 1 and 6 months, respectively. 24.5% of patients had presented with LV dysfunction. LV ejection fraction improved significantly at 1 month (P = 0.002) and 6 months (P = 0.001). Cardiac outcomes in MIS-C were favorable with timely identification and treatment.

Background: Increased risk of proximal humerus fractures are seen in elderly group as their bones are osteoporotic or brittle. Mode of trauma in elderly patients with severe osteoporosis, fractures usually resulted from low velocity indirect trauma while high velocity trauma like road traffic accident was the cause of these fractures in younger age group. Surgery can be an option to obtain a better functional outcome or when a complex fracture needs to be fixed. With the advantages and the paucity of data on the functional outcome and efficacy of the following internal fixation with the PHILOS plate for displaced proximal humerus fractures in mind, the present study was planned. Methodology: Patients who fulfilled the selection criteria were informed about the study and were then enrolled. Following the surgery, patients were followed up regularly at six weeks, three months, and six months. Final outcome was analyzed by Constant Shoulder Score. Christopher Constant, with the help of the late Alan Murley during the years 1981–1986, devised the Constant Score, which was first presented in a university thesis in 1986 and whose methodology was later published in 1987. Results: A total of 30 patients sustained with proximal humerus fractures were studied. In this study of final assessment were Found 73.2 % good to excellent outcome by using the Constant Shoulder Score. Conclusion: Following this study, the inference can be drawn that proximal humerus internal locking system for the management of proximal humerus fractures give a good functional outcome in most patients. Hence PHILOS plate application for fixation of fracture proximal humerus in elderly patients hence allowing early mobilization of the shoulder.

Context: Osteoporosis remains a significant public health problem in many parts of the world, including India. The efficacy of oral bisphosphonates is lower because of poor compliance. Annual treatment with zoledronic acid has been reported to improve outcomes. Objective: To study the benefits and side effects of zoledronic acid in patients with osteoporosis. Methods: This is a blinded randomized clinical trial conducted at a government hospital. Patients aged 50–89 years with bone mineral density (BMD) T score < −2.5 or < −1.5 with 2 mild vertebral fractures or 1 moderate vertebral fractures were randomized to receive placebo versus zoledronic acid. A total of 200 patients were be studied, 100 in each arm. Zoledronic acid was given in single dose (15-min infusion). Serum calcium, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and lateral spine radiographs were performed at enrollment and after 12 months. The primary endpoint was combined risk of new-onset vertebral and hip fractures. The secondary endpoints were new-onset vertebral and hip fractures and BMD. Results: The primary outcome was reduced by 79% during the 1-year period in zoledronic acid, compared to placebo (3% in the treatment group vs. 14% in the placebo group; relative risk (RR): 0.21; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06–0.72, P = 0.01). Treatment with zoledronic acid reduced the risk of new-onset vertebral fracture by 82% (RR: 0.18; 95% CI: 0.04 to 0.79; P = 0.02). No significant differences in new-onset hip fractures were noted (RR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.03–3.15; P = 0.33). A significant increase in BMD score was found after treatment with zoledronic acid compared to placebo group (P < 0.05). No serious adverse events were noted. Conclusion: Annual infusion of zoledronic acid reduces the risk of combined fracture of vertebra and hip and improves the bone mineral density in osteoporotic patients.

The Low-Cost Voice Controlled Wheelchair with Raspberry Pi is an innovative assistive technology designed to improve the mobility and independence of people with disabilities. This research aims to develop a wheelchair system that can be operated using voice commands at an affordable price, making it accessible to a wider range of individuals with limited mobility. The device is built on the Raspberry Pi, a reasonably priced, credit-card-sized computer, and uses an easy-to-use yet efficient voice recognition technique to let users control the wheelchair with their vocal commands. A Raspberry Pi, a microphone, and motor controllers are some of the system's hardware components. The software uses Python programming language and open-source voice recognition technology to recognize voice commands, making it easy for users to navigate their environment independently. The system has been tested on a prototype and has shown promising results in terms of accuracy and reliability. The Low-Cost Voice Controlled Wheelchair with Raspberry Pi can give disabled persons new levels of mobility and independence, enhancing their quality of life and enhancing their capacity to carry out daily tasks.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2 is a neuromuscular disorder of childhood with high morbidity and mortality caused by the deletion of SMN1 gene (gene 1 of motor neuron survival), located at chromosome 5. It is the respiratory complications that account for the majority of deaths in SMA. This report describes an 18-year-old male patient diagnosed with SMA type 2, who had shortness of breath for 2 weeks and cough for 1 week. CT-Thorax revealed left lung collapse due to mucoid impaction in the left main bronchus. Bronchoscopy was challenging in this case due to severe kyphoscoliosis, and impacted mucus was extracted using bronchoscopy-guided forceps biopsy. Repeat X-ray of the chest following treatment showed no evidence of collapse, and patient was discharged in a stable condition with mucolytics and antibiotics.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal and is affected by climate change. Therefore, the production of climate-smart maize is urgently needed by preserving diverse genetic backgrounds through the exploration of their genetic diversity. To achieve this, 96 maize inbred lines were used to screen for phenotypic yield-associated traits and grain quality parameters. These traits were studied across two different environments (Anand and Godhra) and polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were employed to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure, and trait-linked association. Genotype–environment interaction (GEI) reveals that most of the phenotypic traits were governed by the genotype itself across the environments, except for plant and ear height, which largely interact with the environment. The genotypic correlation was found to be positive and significant among protein, lysine and tryptophan content. Similarly, yield-attributing traits like ear girth, kernel rows ear−1, kernels row−1 and number of kernels ear−1 were strongly correlated to each other. Pair-wise genetic distance ranged from 0.0983 (1820194/T1 and 1820192/4-20) to 0.7377 (IGI-1101 and 1820168/T1). The SSRs can discriminate the maize population into three distinct groups and shortlisted two genotypes (IGI-1101 and 1820168/T1) as highly diverse lines. Out of the studied 136 SSRs, 61 were polymorphic to amplify a total of 131 alleles (2–3 per loci) with 0.46 average gene diversity. The Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) ranged from 0.24 (umc1578) to 0.58 (umc2252). Similarly, population structure analysis revealed three distinct groups with 19.79% admixture among the genotypes. Genome-wide scanning through a mixed linear model identifies the stable association of the markers umc2038, umc2050 and umc2296 with protein, umc2296 and umc2252 with tryptophan, and umc1535 and umc1303 with total soluble sugar. The obtained maize lines and SSRs can be utilized in future maize breeding programs in relation to other trait characterizations, developments, and subsequent molecular breeding performances for trait introgression into elite genotypes.

As the global population experiences a notable surge in aging demographics, the need to understand the intricate molecular pathways exacerbated by age-related stresses, including epigenetic dysregulation, becomes a priority. Epigenetic mechanisms play a critical role in driving age-related diseases through altered gene expression, genomic instability, and irregular chromatin remodeling. In this review, we focus on histones, a central component of the epigenome, and consolidate the key findings of histone loss and genome-wide redistribution as fundamental processes contributing to aging and senescence. The review provides insights into novel histone expression profiles, nucleosome occupancy, disruptions in higher-order chromatin architecture, and the emergence of noncanonical histone variants in the aging cellular landscape. Furthermore, we explore the current state of our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of histone deficiency in aging cells. Specific emphasis is placed on highlighting histone degradation pathways in the cell and studies that have explored potential strategies to mitigate histone loss or restore histone levels in aging cells. Finally, in addressing future perspectives, the insights gained from this review hold profound implications for advancing strategies that actively intervene in modulating histone expression profiles in the context of cellular aging and identifying potential therapeutic targets for alleviating a multitude of age-related diseases.

Fish are among the best-studied aquatic animals due to their economic and ecological values. Fish meat is the most affordable protein source for the economically weaker section of people. The environment of almost all aquatic ecosystems has a specific influential role on or by fishes. Therefore, studying their stress biology, especially oxidative stress, is vital because it can influence their growth, production, reproduction, etc. To review the above topic, peer-reviewed electronic databases, including Web of Science, science direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and AGRICOLA, were searched with specific keywords associated with fish, oxidative stress, diseases, etc. The influence of abiotic stress, such as the effects of water dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, water hardness, alkalinity, pH, pollutants, heavy metals, and anthropogenic activities, was reviewed in the current article to draw a conclusion on the updated relation that exists between fish physiology, disease, and abiotic stressors. Oxidative stress and redox regulatory levels under the above parameters were reviewed as the stress or anti-stress responses differ in various fish models. Undoubtedly, the reviewed abiotic factors modulate fish oxidative health status to a greater extent, and therefore, these factors must be considered on a priority basis to improve the general health and immunity status of fish. The statement above remains valid in both saline and freshwater habitats.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of supplementation of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) on voluntary feed intake, availability of different nutrients and growth performance in weaned crossbred calves. Fifteen weaned healthy female Jersey crossbred calves (weight 79.73±3.46 kg; age 234.5±11.33 days) were divided equally into three groups viz., Control (T0), Treatment-1 (T1) and Treatment-2 (T2). Growth trial was conducted on these calves for 90 days. Animals in each treatment group were fed ad lib. total mixed ration (TMR) (CP 12%, TDN 65%) individually for 90 days. Calves under control (T0) group were fed ad lib. TMR (without EFE). Calves under T1 and T2 were fed ad lib. TMR supplemented with EFE cellulase and xylanase @ 8000 and 16000 IU/kg DM of TMR and with EFE cellulase and xylanase @ 12000 and 24000 IU/kg DM of TMR, respectively. Significantly greater DMI per unit body weight (kg/100 kg BW and g/kg W0.75) was recorded in enzyme supplemented groups compared to control group; however, difference between T1 and T2 was non-significant. Addition of EFE in the TMR diet of calves increased TDN and DCP intake (g/kg W0.75) in T1 and T2 than T0 . Supplementation of EFE also enhanced TDN (%), DCP (%), DNDF (%), DE (Mcal/kg of feed) and ME (Mcal/kg of feed) value of the diets under T1 and T2 than T0. Average daily weight gain (g/d/calf) was estimated greater in T1 and T2 than T0. The feed conversion efficiency was similar among three treatments. Whereas, plasma total protein and albumin concentration increased significantly due to supplementation of EFE in the diet of calves. Therefore, it may be concluded that supplementation of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (cellulase and xylanase @ 8000 and 16000 IU/kg TMR DM) may boost growth potential of finisher Jersey crossbred calves with enhanced intake of nutrients.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are currently being used in a number of applications, including agriculture. In agricultural regions all throughout the world, drought poses a serious danger to crop production and development. The outcome of this experiment showed that the treatment of 250 ppm ZnO NPs provides drought resistance by considerably improving physiological and biochemical traits, viz., shoot and root length, RWC, MSI, Zn content, total chlorophyll and protein content, biomass accumulation, osmolytes content, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Similar results were found by gene expression analysis. The expression of drought-responsive genes (DHN, DREB, P5CS, BADH, SOD, CAT, APX, bZIP and NAC) were highly upregulated in ZnO- treated plants compared with non-ZnO treated root and leaf tissues of plants under stress and non-stress conditions. The osmoregulation-related genes (P5CS and BADH) were highly expressed in ZnO treated plants over non-ZnO treated samples in both conditions (stress and control). However, the relative accumulation of these genes was higher root tissues compared to leaf tissues. According to the results, ZnO NPs caused an instantaneous rise in P5CS and BADH expression, which function as stress signaling molecules and trigger the production of genes that are responsive to drought. This results in the activation of the defense system and a greater ability to withstand stress. ZnO NPs in general may, under drought conditions, influence the expression of genes that are drought-inducible via both ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways.

Introduction: Abiotic stresses significantly reduce crop yield by adversely affecting many physio-biochemical processes. Several physiological traits have been targeted and improved for yield enhancement in limiting environmental conditions. Amongst them, staygreen and stem reserve mobilisation are two important mutually exclusive traits contributing to grain filling under drought and heat stress in wheat. Henceforth, the present study was carried out to identify the QTLs governing these traits and to identify the superiors’ lines through multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI)Methods: A mapping population consisting of 166 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from a cross between HD3086 and HI1500 was utilized in this study. The experiment was laid down in alpha lattice design in four environmental conditions viz. Control, drought, heat and combined stress (heat and drought). Genotyping of parents and RILs was carried out with 35 K Axiom® array (Wheat breeder array).Results and Discussion: Medium to high heritability with a moderate to high correlation between traits was observed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to derive latent variables in the original set of traits and the relationship of these traits with latent variables.From this study, 14 QTLs were identified, out of which 11, 2, and 1 for soil plant analysis development (SPAD) value, leaf senescence rate (LSR), and stem reserve mobilisation efficiency (SRE) respectively. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for SPAD value harbored various genes like Dirigent protein 6-like, Protein FATTY ACID EXPORT 3, glucan synthase-3 and Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase, whereas QTLs for LSR were found to contain various genes like aspartyl protease family protein, potassium transporter, inositol-tetrakisphosphate 1-kinase, and DNA polymerase epsilon subunit D-like. Furthermore, the chromosomal region for SRE was found to be associated with serine-threonine protein kinase. Serine-threonine protein kinases are involved in many signaling networks such as ABA mediated ROS signaling and acclimation to environmental stimuli. After the validation of QTLs in multilocation trials, these QTLs can be used for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding programs.

Primary healthcare caters to nearly 70% of the population in India and provides treatment for approximately 80–90% of common conditions. To achieve universal health coverage (UHC), the Indian healthcare system is gearing up by initiating several schemes such as National Health Protection Scheme, Ayushman Bharat, Nutrition Supplementation Schemes, and Inderdhanush Schemes. The healthcare delivery system is facing challenges such as irrational use of medicines, over- and under-diagnosis, high out-of-pocket expenditure, lack of targeted attention to preventive and promotive health services, and poor referral mechanisms. Healthcare providers are unable to keep pace with the volume of growing new scientific evidence and rising healthcare costs as the literature is not published at the same pace. In addition, there is a lack of common standard treatment guidelines, workflows, and reference manuals from the Government of India. Indian Council of Medical Research in collaboration with the National Health Authority, Govt. of India, and the WHO India country office has developed Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) with the objective to be utilized at various levels of healthcare starting from primary to tertiary level care. A systematic approach was adopted to formulate the STWs. An advisory committee was constituted for planning and oversight of the process. Specialty experts' group for each specialty comprised of clinicians working at government and private medical colleges and hospitals. The expert groups prioritized the topics through extensive literature searches and meeting with different stakeholders. Then, the contents of each STW were finalized in the form of single-pager infographics. These STWs were further reviewed by an editorial committee before publication. Presently, 125 STWs pertaining to 23 specialties have been developed. It needs to be ensured that STWs are implemented effectively at all levels and ensure quality healthcare at an affordable cost as part of UHC.

Keeping in view the recent advancements in polysaccharide materials, gum acacia (GA) - tragacanth gum (TG) was investigated for designing polymeric network structures impregnated with cephalexin antibiotics for drug delivery (DD). Grafted product of polyvinylimidazole [poly(VIm)] and GA-TG was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Change in mesh size (from 17.73 to 32.98 nm) and crosslinking density (between 1.64 × 10−5 to 5.06 × 10−5 mol cm−3) was found with change in poly(VIm), gum and crosslinker NNMBA content which revealed that these parameters can be tailored made as per requirement and applications. Swelling properties illustrated pH sensitivity in copolymers because of composition which is useful for colon or site-specific DD of cephalexin. FESEM and AFM demonstrated heterogeneous morphology with the rough surface topology of grafted product. XPS and FTIR confirmed the grafting of poly(VIm) onto polysaccharide chains. Drug diffusion was non-Fickian and release was fitted in Higuchi kinetic model from copolymers. The release was slow and prolonged due to drug-polymer interactions. Copolymers exhibited 31.29% scavenging ability in DPPH assay and haemolysis was less than 2% that inferred biocompatible nature. Bio-surface interactions with intestinal membrane indicated the muco-adhesive nature of copolymers. Antimicrobial properties of hydrogel were evaluated against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. All observations revealed that GA-TG crosslinked copolymers could be explored for colon DD of antibiotic drugs with tailored crosslinking density.

The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of various consumer attributes on the fast fashion consumption pattern. The effect of consumer age, family income and family size on the percentage of monthly income spent on clothing and percentage of monthly clothing consumption spent on fast fashion by consumers in NCR (National Capital Region) of India was studied in this research. Causal research was employed in this study. Correlations among the variables were established using the response surface methodology (Box-Behnken experimental design) to understand whether the impact is significant or not. Control factors, studied at 3 levels of variation, were age, monthly family income and family size. The responses for the experiment were the percentage of monthly income (per person) spent on clothing and the percentage of monthly clothing consumption spent on fast fashion. The study revealed that age and monthly family income have a strong influence on the percentage of monthly income spent on clothing, while family size has a negligible or no effect on the percentage of monthly income spent on clothing. It was also found that age, monthly family income and family size have a strong influence on the percentage of monthly clothing consumption spent on fast fashion. The demand for fast fashion and clothing is rising at a very high rate, which has made it hard for retail brands and apparel manufacturers to meet the consumer expectations. The analysis of consumer behaviour provides the advantage to fashion brands in anticipating and meeting consumer demands in a more efficient manner to create brand loyalty.

The up-regulation of ABC transporters Cdr1p and Cdr2p that efflux antifungal azole drugs are a leading cause of Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) in the white fungus Candida albicans. C. albicans was reported to infect patients following the recent Covid-19 pandemic after they were given steroids for recovery. Previously, the TAC1 gene was identified as the transcriptional activator of Candida drug resistance genes (CDR1 and CDR2) and has no known human homologs. This makes it a good target for the development of novel antifungals. We, therefore, carried out the molecular dissection study of TAC1 to understand the functional regulation of the ABC transporter genes (CDR1 and CDR2) under its control. The N-terminal DNA Binding Domain (DBD) of Tac1p interacts with the Drug Responsive Element (DRE) present in the upstream promoter region of CDR1 and CDR2 genes of C. albicans. The interaction between DBD and DRE recruits Tac1p to the promoter of CDR genes. The C-terminal Acidic Activation Domain (AAD) of Tac1p interacts with the TATA box Binding Protein (TBP) and thus recruits TBP to the TATA box of CDR1 and CDR2 genes. Taking a cue from a previous study involving a TAC1 deletion strain that suggested that Tac1p acts as a xenobiotic receptor, in this study, we identified that the Middle Homology Region (MHR) of Tac1p acts as a probable xenobiotic binding domain (XBD) which plays an important role in Candida drug resistance. In addition, we studied the role of Tac1p in the regulation of some lipid profiling genes and stress response genes since they also contain the DRE consensus sequence and found that some of them can respond to xenobiotic stimuli.

Introduction: Foodborne illnesses are caused by consumption of contaminated foods. The risk of food getting contaminated depends largely on the health status of the food handlers, their personal hygiene, knowledge and practice of food hygiene. Hence, this study aimed to assess the proportion of Salmonella among food handlers working in the cafeteria of Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal. Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from March 2018 to February 2019. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the sociodemographic characteristics, the knowledge and the risk factors of the participants. A total of 62 stool samples were collected and processed according to the standard microbiological procedures. All the Salmonella isolates were identified by biochemical tests. Additionally, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines 2017, using Kirby-Baur disk diffusion method. Abstract Background Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a rare disease entity characterized by acute, non-ischemic, reversible myocardial dysfunction that mimics acute myocardial infarction. Activation and excessive outflow of sympathetic nervous system are believed to be central to the figure in the disease pathogenesis. Adrenocortical hormones potentiate the systemic actions of sympathetic nervous system and accordingly are essential for regulation of myocardial function. We present an unusual case of a middle-aged woman with primary adrenal insufficiency who presented paradoxically with TCM. Case presentation A 50-year-old woman with past history of hypothyroidism presented to emergency department with history of acute chest pain and syncope. There was no significant drug history or history of an emotional or physical stimulus prior to admission. Prominent pigmentation over the tongue and skin creases of hands were noted. On presentation, she was in shock and had ventricular tachycardia which required electrical cardioversion. The subsequent electrocardiogram demonstrated diffuse T-wave inversions with prolonged QTC. There was apical hypokinesia on echocardiogram, and cardiac biomarkers were elevated. There was persistent inotropic requirement. She had marked postural symptoms, and a postural blood pressure drop of 50 mm Hg was present. Initial laboratory parameters were significant for hyperkalemia (7.8 mEq/L) and hyponatremia (128 mEq/L). These findings prompted evaluation for adrenal insufficiency which was confirmed with appropriate tests. Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome II was thus diagnosed based on the above findings. Coronary angiography revealed normal coronaries. The diagnoses of TCM was established in accordance with the International Takotsubo Diagnostic Criteria. She was started on stress dose steroid replacement therapy and improved dramatically. At one month of follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic, and there was normalization of her left ventricular function. Conclusions Intricate relationship and interplay exist between the steroid hormones and catecholamines in the pathogenesis of TCM. Steroid hormones not only potentiate the actions of catecholamines, but they also regulate and channelize catecholaminergic actions preventing their deleterious effects on the cardiac tissue. Hence, both steroid deficiency and exogenous steroid replacement may precipitate TCM. Evidence from more such cases and larger perspective studies in future will further improve our understanding of this complex disease process and its myriad associations.

This paper investigated the structural, optical, electronic and thermal characteristics of SrSnO3 perovskites that were calculated using the density functional theory. Software called WEIN2K is used to perform the calculation. According to our calculations, the band gap energy of the SrSnO3 is roughly 4.00 eV and it adopts a distorted cubic shape in the space group Pm3-m. The band structure and partial density of state reflects the major contribution of O 2p in the valence band while 5s orbital from Sn in the conduction band. The electron density plot significantly shows the contribution different clusters SrO12 and SnO6 that plays crucial role in electronic and optical properties. The creation of covalent bonds between the atoms of Sn and O as well as the ionic interaction between the atoms of Sr and O are both demonstrated by the electron density graphs and SCF calculation. The refractive index and extinction coefficient directly correlated with the real and imaginary part of complex dielectric function. Real part of dielectric function shows higher values at two major point of energy 3.54 eV and 9.78 eV associated with the absorption and optical activity of SrSnO3. Negative part of imaginary dielectric function part suggests metallic behavior also supported by -grep lapw method. Thermoelectric and thermal conductivity properties suggest the power factor need to be improved for the device application.

Abstract The learning algorithm for a three-layered neural structure with novel non-linear quaternionic-valued multiplicative (QVM) neurons is proposed in this paper. The computing capability of non-linear aggregation in the cell body of biological neurons inspired the development of a non-linear neuron model. However, unlike linear neuron models, most non-linear neuron models are built on higher order aggregation, which is more mathematically complex and difficult to train. As a result, building non-linear neuron models with a simple structure is a difficult and time-consuming endeavor in the neurocomputing field. The concept of a QVM neuron model was influenced by the non-linear neuron model, which has a simple structure and the great computational ability. The suggested neuron’s linearity is determined by the weight and bias associated with each quaternionic-valued input. Non-commutative multiplication of all linearly connected quaternionic input-weight terms accommodates the non-linearity. To train three-layered networks with QVM neurons, the standard quaternionic-gradient-based backpropagation (QBP) algorithm is utilized. The computational and generalization capabilities of the QVM neuron are assessed through training and testing in the quaternionic domain utilizing benchmark problems, such as 3D and 4D chaotic time-series predictions, 3D geometrical transformations, and 3D face recognition. The training and testing outcomes are compared to conventional and root-power mean (RPM) neurons in quaternionic domain using training–testing MSEs, network topology (parameters), variance, and AIC as statistical measures. According to these findings, networks with QVM neurons have greater computational and generalization capabilities than networks with conventional and RPM neurons in quaternionic domain.

The sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is a rare pathological lesion found in around 0.09% of the population. Surgical management is usually indicated for large aneurysms causing hemodynamic compromise or aneurysms that enlarge progressively. Surgical approaches for unruptured aneurysms include patch or primary closure. The article describes our technique for closing the small sinus of a Valsalva aneurysm discovered incidentally during surgery for aortic valve replacement. Interrupted pledgeted sutures placed for fixing the mechanical prosthetic aortic valve (St Judes Medical TM) were passed through the aortic valve annulus and the superior edge of the aneurysm sac, resulting in transverse primary closure of the aneurysm opening in the aortic root.

Summary: Myocardial infarction (MI) triggers an inflammatory response that transitions from pro-inflammatory to reparative over time. Restoring sympathetic nerves in the heart after MI prevents arrhythmias. This study investigated if reinnervation altered the immune response after MI. This study used quantitative multiplex immunohistochemistry to identify the immune cells present in the heart 2 weeks after ischemia-reperfusion. Two therapeutics stimulated reinnervation, preventing arrhythmias and shifting the immune response from inflammatory to reparative, with fewer pro-inflammatory macrophages and more regulatory T cells and reparative macrophages. Treatments did not alter macrophage phenotype in vitro, which suggested reinnervation contributed to the altered immune response.

Abstract Heavy metals cause outrageous ecological risks when released into the environment from many point and non-point sources. Biosorbents prepared from the leaves of Eupatorium adenophorum (AEA) and Acer oblongum (AAO) were used as practical solutions to remove the toxic heavy metal cadmium (Cd2+) from wastewater. Biosorption of Cd2+ was investigated using AEA and AAO biomass under batch conditions. The effect of operating variables like temperature, contact time, the pH impact, and initial metal concentration and biosorbent portion on Cd2+ removal has been studied. The optimal pH and the sorbent dosage were found to be 7.0 and 2.0 g L−1, respectively, and removal efficiency attained was 93.3% with an equilibrium removal time of 90 min. The equilibrium uptake of Cd2+ was evaluated by Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm model was proved fit confirming single layer of sorption. The biosorption of Cd2+ onto activated AEA and AAO biomass achieved were 45.45 mg g−1 and 44.64 mg g−1 respectively. The adsorption affinity of AEA toward Cd2+ was discovered a lot more prominent than AAO biomass. The kinetic data of Cd2+ biosorption onto activated AEA and AAO, fitted with a pseudo-second-order well with higher values of R2 (> 0.99). Thermodynamics disclosed that the adsorption process was spontaneous (∆G0 0), and feasible (ΔS0 > 0). The adsorption of Cd2+ onto AEA was more exothermic and spontaneous than the AAO biosorbent. Abstract Soil salinity affects various crop cultivation but legumes are the most sensitive to salinity. Osmotic stress is the first stage of salinity stress caused by excess salts in the soil on plants which adversely affects the growth instantly. The Trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) genes play a key role in the regulation of abiotic stresses resistance from the high expression of different isoform. Selected genotypes were evaluated to estimate for salt tolerance as well as genetic variability at morphological and molecular level. Allelic variations were identified in some of the selected genotypes for the TPS gene. A comprehensive analysis of the TPS gene from selected genotypes was conducted. Presence of significant genetic variability among the genotypes was found for salinity tolerance. This is the first report of allelic variation of TPS gene from chickpea and results indicates that the SNPs present in these conserved regions may contribute largely to functional distinction. The nucleotide sequence analysis suggests that the TPS gene sequences were found to be conserved among the genotypes. Some selected genotypes were evaluated to estimate for salt tolerance as well as for comparative analysis of physiological, molecular and allelic variability for salt responsive gene Trehalose-6-Phosphate Synthase through sequence similarity. Allelic variations were identified in some selected genotypes for the TPS gene. It is found that Pusa362, Pusa1103, and IG5856 are the most salt-tolerant lines and the results indicates that the identified genotypes can be used as a reliable donor for the chickpea improvement programs for salinity tolerance.

This study is aimed to model and optimize the decolorization of reactive black 5 (RB5) dye using Bacillus albus DD1. The response surface methodology (RSM) along with rotatable central composite design (rCCD) is used to optimize the response, % decolorization with four input variables: (i) pH (5–9), initial dye concentration (50–500 ppm), the composition of yeast extract as nitrogen source (0.2–1%) and amount of bacterial inoculum (5–25% v/v). The % decolorization is predicted to be ≈ 98% at the optimized condition (pH = 7.6, dye concentration = 200 ppm, bacterial inoculum = 20 v/v% and yeast extract = 0.4%). Furthermore, the kinetics and thermodynamics of RB5 degradation are also determined. The kinetic order of biodegradation of RB5 is found to follow first-order kinetics with a kinetic rate constant = 0.0384. The activation energy, Ea and frequency factor, A values are calculated as 34.46 kJ/mol and 24,343 (1/Day). A thermodynamic study is also carried out at different temperatures (298 K, 308 K, 310 K, 313 K, and 318 K) using optimized conditions. The values of the and ΔS are found to be +30.79 kJ/mol, and −0.1 kJ/mol/K, respectively using the Eyring–Polanyi equation. The values of ΔG are also calculated at all temperatures. HIGHLIGHTS RSM with rCCD is employed to optimize the decolorization of reactive black 5 using a novel bacterial strain.; Optimization of process parameters such as pH, yeast extract as a co-substrate, amount of bacterial inoculum and initial dye concentration.; Under optimized conditions, 98% removal was achieved within 72 hr.; The values of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters k, Ea, A, ΔH and ΔS are estimated.;

There have been a growing number of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis cases following coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection. Given the rare occurrence, studies eliciting the clinical features, treatment response, and outcomes are still limited. In patients recovering from COVID-19, multifocal neurologic symptoms in the presence or absence of encephalopathy must be closely evaluated by neurologists and physicians. Early radiographic evaluation using magnetic resonance imaging and timely administration of glucocorticoid-based treatment reduces mortality and leads to satisfactory outcomes.

Pearl millet is a key food for millions living in semi-arid and arid regions and is a main diet for poorer populations. The genetic diversity existing in the pearl millet germplasm can be used to improve the micronutrient content and grain yield. Effective and organized exploitation of diversity at morphological and DNA levels is the strategy for any crop improvement program. In this study, the genetic diversity of 48 pearl millet genotypes was evaluated for eight morphological traits and eleven biochemical characters. All genotypes were also characterized using twelve SSR and six SRAP markers to evaluate genetic diversity. The significant mean difference between morphological and biochemical traits were detected. The productive tillers per plant varied from 2.65 to 7.60 with a mean of 4.80. The grain yield of genotypes varied more than 3× from 15.85 g (ICMR 07222) to 56.75 g (Nandi 75) with an average of 29.54 g per plant. Higher levels of protein, iron, and zinc contents were found to be present in ICMR 12555 (20.6%), ICMR 08666 (77.38 ppm), and IC 139900 (55.48 ppm), respectively, during the experiment. Substantial variability was observed for grain calcium as it ranged from 100.00 ppm (ICMR 10222) to 256.00 ppm (ICMR 12888). The top eight nutrient-dense genotypes flowered in 34–74 days and had 5.71–9.39 g 1,000 grain weight. Genotype ICMR 08666 was superior for Fe, Zn, K and P. The inter-genotype similarity coefficient at the genetic level, generated using DNA markers, ranged from 0.616 to 0.877 with a mean of 0.743. A combination of morpho-biochemical traits and DNA markers based diversity may help to differentiate the genotypes and diverse genotypes can be used in breeding programs to improve the mineral content in pearl millet.

The demand for Electrical Power change effect can be mitigated in the power sector by switching to non-conventional sources like wind power and Solar power. However, because of the unpredictable nature of these sources, it is becoming increasingly difficult to incorporate them into the current infrastructure. In a Hybrid Renewable System (HRS), wherein multiple types of generators are combined, this issue may arise. HRS modelling to obtain economically and practically viable solutions are the main focus. This research works presents a novel technique of optimization based on the Evaporation rate water cycle algorithm (ER-WCA) for determining the best time to run HRS systems in light of a variety of climate scenarios. Diesel generators (DG) are modelled with wind, solar PV, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in two different control strategies. The system's goal is to achieve optimal scheduling for all generated units connected to HRS while simultaneously reducing the total daily cost of HRS. When the DG is operating at a variable power, the proposed hybrid optimization operation control model saves significantly more fuel than when the DG is operating at its rated capacity to supply the same load demands.
