A physician shares how a question posed by a patient's mother made him realize that not everything can be explained by science. The question focused on the mystery of habits, such as in the case of the physician who visits the patient the same time every day. Reflections on faith and superstition are also given.

Two problems face managers in their decision making process: (1) they must determine the logic to be used in making their decisions; for example, economic theory, law, social good, immediate profit, or other theory; and (2) they must find information appropriate to the logic, analyze it, and make a decision. If managers reverse the process and base their decisions on available information that is then put into a logic pattern or theory, managers will be led to recognize only selected phenomena in their environment and will be in danger of behaving superstitiously. The nature of superstition, alternative logics and perceptions, and superstition in the American culture are discussed.

Business travelers should be mindful of superstitions in countries where they hold their business meetings to avoid offending their hosts and embarrassing themselves.
