Abstract

Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric disorder with approximately 1% lifetime risk globally. Large-scale schizophrenia genetic studies have reported primarily on European ancestry samples, potentially missing important biological insights. Here, we report the largest study to date of East Asian participants (22,778 schizophrenia cases and 35,362 controls), identifying 21 genome-wide-significant associations in 19 genetic loci. Common genetic variants that confer risk for schizophrenia have highly similar effects between East Asian and European ancestries (genetic correlation = 0.98 ± 0.03), indicating that the genetic basis of schizophrenia and its biology are broadly shared across populations. A fixed-effect meta-analysis including individuals from East Asian and European ancestries identified 208 significant associations in 176 genetic loci (53 novel). Trans-ancestry fine-mapping reduced the sets of candidate causal variants in 44 loci. Polygenic risk scores had reduced performance when transferred across ancestries, highlighting the importance of including sufficient samples of major ancestral groups to ensure their generalizability across populations.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigated how educational levels modify the relationship between the standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) of heart rate variability and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: Participants with physical injuries were enrolled from a trauma center and monitored over two years. Initial assessments included SDNN and educational attainment, along with socio-demographic and clinical variables. PTSD diagnoses were made at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months post-injury using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5. Logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results: Of the 538 participants, 58 (10.8%) developed PTSD during the follow-up period. A significant interaction effect was observed: lower SDNN was significantly linked to PTSD in individuals with higher education, but not in those with lower education. Conclusion: The study identified education-dependent associations between SDNN and PTSD development, emphasizing the importance of tailored PTSD prevention strategies that consider both SDNN and educational levels. Abstract

Introduction: This study examined the moderating effects of childhood abuse histories on the associations between low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) components of heart rate variability (HRV) and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: Participants with physical injuries were recruited from a trauma center and followed for two years. Baseline assessments included LF, HF, and childhood abuse histories, assessed using the Nemesis Childhood Trauma Interview. Socio-demographic and clinical covariates were obtained. PTSD diagnoses were made at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months post-injury using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5. Logistic regression analyses assessed the associations. Results: Among 538 participants, 58 (10.8%) developed PTSD during the study period. A significant interaction was found: lower LF/HF were significantly associated with PTSD in patients with childhood abuse histories, but not in those without. Conclusion: Childhood abuse history significantly moderates the relationship between LF-HF HRV components and PTSD development, suggesting that childhood adversities amplify the risk. 77. Effects of COVID-19-related stress and fear on depression in schizophrenia patients and the general population

Abstract

Abstract This study compared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related stress, fear of infection, loneliness, and depression between patients with schizophrenia and the general population. A face-to-face survey was administered to 1340 patients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder and online survey of the general population (n = 2000) was conducted. The information gathered included the level of COVID-19-related stress, fear of infection, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score, and the three-item UCLA Loneliness Scale score. Structural equation modeling revealed a significant effect of fear of COVID-19 infection on depression among the general population and on loneliness among patients with schizophrenia. Loneliness experienced during COVID-19 exacerbated depression in both groups. In the COVID-19-related stress–loneliness–depression pathway, the partial mediating effect of loneliness was significant in both groups. Conversely, in the COVID-19-related fear–loneliness–depression pathway, the full mediating effect of loneliness was only significant in patients with schizophrenia. In conclusion, the loneliness associated with COVID-19-related stress and fear of infection was an important factor influencing depression, and the impact was greater in patients with schizophrenia compared with the general population. Thus, different mental health intervention plans are needed for patients with schizophrenia during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the long-lasting COVID-19 pandemic, social support and provision of mental health services to prevent loneliness and consequent depression are required in patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract

This brief proposed an imbalanced inductor-current buck (IIB) converter. The proposed IIB converter has two inductor current paths. The IIB converter provides majority of the load current through a current path composed of low voltage transistors and minority of the load current through the current path composed of high voltage transistors, which becomes further as voltage conversion ratio decreases. Therefore, the IIB converter reduces conduction loss as the voltage conversion ratio decreases, which is considerably important in low voltage applications. In addition, since this converter uses a flying capacitor network behind the inductor, it is invulnerable to the input voltage variation. The proposed converter has peak efficiencies of 90.7% at ${\mathrm { V}}_{\mathrm { IN}} {=} 12$ V, ${\mathrm { V}}_{\mathrm { O}} {=} 0.6$ V, and 85.6% at ${\mathrm { V}}_{\mathrm { IN}} {=} 12$ V, ${\mathrm { V}}_{\mathrm { O}} {=} 0.3$ V. The chip was fabricated in 130-nm BCD process with an area of 6.177 mm2.

95. Does Satellite Television Program Satisfy Ethiopian Secondary School Students?

Abstract

The Ethiopian development plans have dealt with education sector as a key strategic pillar. There have been a lot of educational efforts. Especially to cope with lack of qualified teachers, lack of good teaching models, and remote rural regions separated from educational benefits, Ethiopian Ministry of Education has made efforts in utilizing educational media such as satellite TV program for improving quality of secondary education for last decades of years. However, there was lack of national investigation in the aspect of systemic evaluation, for measuring the effectiveness of satellite TV program. This study aims to investigate the actual practice and effectiveness of satellite TV program in Ethiopian secondary schools. To achieve the goal, one questionnaire was developed based on CIPP model. Two secondary schools are selected and 228 students (Grade 9-12) participated in the survey. Data collected from them were utilized for descriptives & frequencies analysis, chi-square test, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that Ethiopian students utilizing satellite TV program scored highly in the evaluation areas of context, input, process, and product of the program. It was also found that learning demand, learning content, and class management were factors affecting the satisfaction in satellite TV program. These findings suggested that satellite TV program could play an important role in improving the quality of in Ethiopian secondary education.
