56. Measurements of Absolute, SI Traceable Lunar Irradiance with the Airborne LUnar Spectral Irradiance (air LUSI) Instrument

Abstract

The Moon is a very useful calibration target for Earth-observing sensors in orbit because its surface is radiometrically stable and it has a radiant flux comparable to Earth scenes. To predict the lunar irradiance given an illumination and viewing geometry, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed the Robotic Lunar Observatory (ROLO) Model of exo-atmospheric lunar spectral irradiance. The USGS ROLO model represents the current most precise knowledge of lunar spectral irradiance and is used frequently as a relative calibration standard by space-borne Earth-observing sensors. However, its accuracy as an absolute reference may be limited to several percent and it is not SI-traceable. Advancing the model to be a more accurate absolute lunar reference requires new measurements. The objective of the airborne LUnar Spectral Irradiance (Air-LUSI) mission is to make highly accurate, SI-traceable measurements of lunar spectral irradiance in the VNIR spectral region from NASA’s high-altitude ER-2 aircraft, above 95% of the atmosphere. To that end, the Air-LUSI system uses a non-imaging telescope system that robotically tracks the Moon in flight, fiber-optic coupled to a stable spectrometer housed in an enclosure providing a robustly controlled environment. The spectrometer measures about 350 to 1050 nm at 3.8 nm resolution, with 0.8 nm sampling. The instrument is reproducibly stable to 0.3% and rigorously calibrated before and after campaigns and flights using a similar transfer standard spectrograph. An on-board LED source is used to monitor the instrument response during flight ascent and descent. Air-LUSI successfully conducted a Demonstration Flight Campaign on five consecutive nights from 12 to 17 November 2019, corresponding to lunar phase angles of about 10°, 21°, 34°, 46° and 59°. Each night, the Air-LUSI system observed the Moon from above 68,000 feet altitude for 30 to 40 minutes. To reach a target uncertainty for lunar irradiance of 0.5% (k=1), processing the raw data to exo-atmospheric lunar spectral irradiance required accounting for various known behaviors of the instrument, such as thermal and stray light corrections. Additional measures were taken to address variances idiosyncratic to the campaign and were factored into the measurement error budget. The resulting error budget currently stands at less than 1% over most of the VNIR range. This paper reviews the steps taken towards high accuracy results for Demonstration Flight Campaign, how they factored in the error budget, and how our uncertainty target can be met in future campaigns.

Abstract

A calculative mindset (CM) describes the tendency to analyze and convert qualitative social values into numeric or monetary metrics and is a predisposition that shapes behaviors and actions of the employee. CM has been manipulated in experimental studies, but it has not been investigated in field research due to the absence of a scale to measure CM. In study 1, we followed Hinkin's scale development protocol to conceptualize, develop, and validate a measure of CM to facilirate research in organizational contexts. In Study 2, we examined the relationship between CM and measures of performance, counterproductive work behavior (CWB), organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB), and in role-performance (IRP). Results from hierarchical regression analyses indicate that CM is related to these performance outcomes and explains incremental variance over established measures of the Five-Factor Model of personality. Implications for personality research, selection of human resources, and facilitation of an ethical workplace are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Interest and research on academic misconduct has become more salient in part due to recent publicized academic and organizational scandals. The current study investigated a possible interaction between perception of the university's academic culture and personality, conceptualized as Reliability, on students' perceptions of academic misconduct. A convenience sample of 217 university business students (91 men, 126 women), whose average age was 22.3 yr. (SD = 4.4) was tested. Re liability was measured with an occupational scale included in the Hogan Personality Inventory. Two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted using Cheating Intentions and Likelihood of Reporting Cheating as criteria. Age, Reliability, Integrity Culture, and the interaction between scores on Reliability and Integrity Culture were entered as predictors. Only Age and Reliability scores were significant predictors of Cheating Intentions, while all variables were significant predictors for Likelihood of Reporting Cheating. Suggestions for practice and research are provided.

In this article, we describe an advanced application of digitally assisted vitreoretinal surgery (DAVS) that involves the consolidation of pre-existing ancillary imaging technology into a single same-screen viewing platform. Forty-four eyes of 44 patients were operated using same screen simultaneous viewing of the primary three-dimensional high definition (3DHD) surgical field and simultaneous auxiliary video feed viewing of all currently approved ocular endoscopy (n=12), intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) units (n=24), or computer feeds from the EHR/image management software (n=8). All surgeries were successful with excellent functional and anatomic outcomes. DAVS facilitated same screen viewing of multiple video/information feeds was notable for improved ergonomics, surgical efficiency, and precision when compared to viewing the surgical field and auxiliary video feeds separately. We describe a new concept for the vitreoretinal operating room – a DAVS-based surgical information handling cockpit – integrating FDA approved ocular endoscopy (n=1), microscope-integrated iOCT units (n=3), and one EHR/Image management solution with the primary surgical field 3DHD feed. Abstract

The Sea-Viewing Wide-Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) has made monthly observations of the Moon since 1997. Using 66 monthly measurements, the SeaWiFS calibration team has developed a correction for the instrument's on-orbit response changes. Concurrently, a lunar irradiance model has been developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from extensive Earth-based observations of the Moon. The lunar irradiances measured by SeaWiFS are compared with the USGS model. The comparison shows essentially identical response histories for SeaWiFS, with differences from the model of less than 0.05% per thousand days in the long-term trends. From the SeaWiFS experience we have learned that it is important to view the entire lunar image at a constant phase angle from measurement to measurement and to understand, as best as possible, the size of each lunar image. However, a constant phase angle is not required for using the USGS model. With a long-term satellite lunar data set it is possible to determine instrument changes at a quality level approximating that from the USGS lunar model. However, early in a mission, when the dependence on factors such as phase and libration cannot be adequately determined from satellite measurements alone, the USGS model is critical to an understanding of trends in instruments that use the Moon for calibration. Abstract

The relationship between personality and helping behaviors in three different contexts was examined in a field study. In a sample of 178 employees from three professional organizations, measures of the Big Five Personality factors were found to be related to discretionary helping behaviors performed in the context of one's home, workplace and the larger society. Collectively, the five personality factors accounted for 7% of the variance in Household Activities and Chores, 26% of the variance in Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and 10% of the variance in Volunteerism. Implications of these relations are discussed.

Abstract

The NASA VIIRS Ocean Science Team (VOST) has the task of evaluating Suomi NPP VIIRS ocean color data for the continuity of the NASA ocean color climate data records. The generation of science quality ocean color data products requires an instrument calibration that is stable over time. Since the VIIRS NIR Degradation Anomaly directly impacts the bands used for atmospheric correction of the ocean color data (Bands M6 and M7), the VOST has adapted the VIIRS on-orbit calibration approach to meet the ocean science requirements. The solar diffuser calibration time series and the solar diffuser stability monitor time series have been used to derive changes in the instrument response and diffuser reflectance over time for bands M1-M11.
