51. Tropical dehydration processes constrained by the seasonality of stratospheric deuterated water

Abstract

Stratospheric water vapour affects Earth’s radiation budget. In addition, it has a key role in stratospheric chemistry and in processes that permit ozone depletion. Air largely enters the stratosphere in the tropics, but the processes that bring water through the cold tropopause into the stratosphere are not well understood. Here we present a 19-month record of non-deuterated (H2O) and deuterated (HDO) water in the tropical stratosphere, collected through remote-sensing measurements with the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding. Our data show a clear seasonal cycle in the isotopic composition that propagates upward in the tropical stratosphere, and is most likely created in the tropical tropopause layer. In addition, we find that the slope of the HDO–H2O correlation of water entering the stratosphere in the tropics is close to, but slightly steeper than the slope expected from Rayleigh fractionation. We propose that gradual dehydration of air by cirrus clouds that are formed in situ, together with a seasonally varying contribution from the evaporation of convectively lofted ice, provides the most plausible explanation for our measurements. We conclude that potential changes in the water budget of the tropical tropopause layer and the stratosphere should be detectable in isotopic measurements.

Abstract

The key objective of the project "Use of the MSG SEVIRI channels in a combined SSM/I, TRMM and geostationary IR method for rapid updates of rainfall" is the development of algorithms for rapid-update of satellite rainfall estimations at the geostationary (GEO) scale. The new channels available with the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) radiometer in the visible (VIS), near infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) portions of the spectrum provide new insights into the microphysical and dynamic structure of precipitating clouds thus allowing for a more precise identification of precipitation intensities. Passive microwave (PMW) radiometers on board low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites are used to determine information on the vertical cloud structure. Key features of the new method(s) are: 1. Microphysical characterization of precipitating clouds with VIS/IR sensors; 2. Creation of cloud microphysical and radiative databases from cloud model outputs and aircraft penetrations; 3. Tuning of PMW algorithms for different cloud systems (maritime, continental, convective, stratiform,...); 4. Combination of data from different algorithms and application to a rapid updatecycle at the GEO scale. The project provided the background for EURAINSAT "European Satellite Rainfall Estimation and Monitoring at the Geostationary Scale", a research project co-funded by the Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Programme of the European Commission within the topic "Development of generic Earth observation technologies". A brief account of the major research and organizational results will be given in the following.

Abstract

The annual variation of δD in the tropical lower stratosphere is a critical indicator for the relative importance of different processes contributing to the transport of water vapour through the cold tropical tropopause region into the stratosphere. Distinct observational discrepancies of the δD annual variation were visible in the works of Steinwagner et al. (2010) and Randel et al. (2012). Steinwagner et al. (2010) analysed MIPAS (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding) observations retrieved with the IMK/IAA (Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung in Karlsruhe, Germany, in collaboration with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Granada, Spain) processor, while Randel et al. (2012) focused on ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer) observations. Here we reassess the discrepancies based on newer MIPAS (IMK/IAA) and ACE-FTS data sets, also showing for completeness results from SMR (Sub-Millimetre Radiometer) observations and a ECHAM/MESSy (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Hamburg and Modular Earth Submodel System) Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) simulation (Eichinger et al., 2015b). Similar to the old analyses, the MIPAS data set yields a pronounced annual variation (maximum about 75 ‰), while that derived from the ACE-FTS data set is rather weak (maximum about 25 ‰). While all data sets exhibit the phase progression typical for the tape recorder, the annual maximum in the ACE-FTS data set precedes that in the MIPAS data set by 2 to 3 months. We critically consider several possible reasons for the observed discrepancies, focusing primarily on the MIPAS data set. We show that the δD annual variation in the MIPAS data up to an altitude of 40 hPa is substantially impacted by a “start altitude effect”, i.e. dependency between the lowermost altitude where MIPAS retrievals are possible and retrieved data at higher altitudes. In itself this effect does not explain the differences with the ACE-FTS data. In addition, there is a mismatch in the vertical resolution of the MIPAS HDO and H2O data (being consistently better for HDO), which actually results in an artificial tape-recorder-like signal in δD. Considering these MIPAS characteristics largely removes any discrepancies between the MIPAS and ACE-FTS data sets and shows that the MIPAS data are consistent with a δD tape recorder signal with an amplitude of about 25 ‰ in the lowermost stratosphere.

Abstract

This work considers which higher-order effects in modelling the cosmic shear angular power spectra must be taken into account for Euclid. We identify which terms are of concern, and quantify their individual and cumulative impact on cosmological parameter inference from Euclid. We compute the values of these higher-order effects using analytic expressions, and calculate the impact on cosmological parameter estimation using the Fisher matrix formalism. We review 24 effects and find the following potentially need to be accounted for: the reduced shear approximation, magnification bias, source-lens clustering, source obscuration, local Universe effects, and the flat Universe assumption. Upon computing these explicitly, and calculating their cosmological parameter biases, using a maximum multipole of $\ell=5000$, we find that the magnification bias, source-lens clustering, source obscuration, and local Universe terms individually produce significant ($\,>0.25\sigma$) cosmological biases in one or more parameters, and accordingly must be accounted for. In total, over all effects, we find biases in $\Omega_{\rm m}$, $\Omega_{\rm b}$, $h$, and $\sigma_{8}$ of $0.73\sigma$, $0.28\sigma$, $0.25\sigma$, and $-0.79\sigma$, respectively, for flat $\Lambda$CDM. For the $w_0w_a$CDM case, we find biases in $\Omega_{\rm m}$, $\Omega_{\rm b}$, $h$, $n_{\rm s}$, $\sigma_{8}$, and $w_a$ of $1.49\sigma$, $0.35\sigma$, $-1.36\sigma$, $1.31\sigma$, $-0.84\sigma$, and $-0.35\sigma$, respectively; which are increased relative to the $\Lambda$CDM due to additional degeneracies as a function of redshift and scale., Comment: 20 pages, submitted to A&A

63. Shape-dependent regularization for the retrieval of atmospheric state parameter profiles.

Abstract

We present an adaptive regularization approach to retrieve vertical state parameter profiles from limb-sounding measurements with high accuracy. This is accomplished by introducing a dedicated regularization functional based on a reasonable assumption of the profile characteristics. The approach results in shape-dependent weighting during least-squares computations and relies on a Cholesky decomposition of a preselected L(T)L matrix. Our method is compared with established regularization functionals such as optimal estimation and Tikhonov with respect to errors and achievable height resolution. The results show an improved height resolution of the retrieved profiles together with a reduction of absolute and relative errors obtained by test-bed simulations.
