S–CoFe2O4 nanocomposite was synthesized using an easy calcining procedure in the air and was then given a variety of analytical techniques to analyze it. PXRD analysis supported cubic S–CoFe2O4 structure. CoFe2O4 and S–CoFe2O4 catalysts have been continuously absorbed in the visible region, which suggests active d-d transitions. Methylene blue degradation was used to investigate the photocatalytic activity of CoFe2O4 and S–CoFe2O4 catalysts under visible light illumination. The point zero charge of S–CoFe2O4 catalyst was found to be at pH 4.4 confirmed from the zeta potential. Ammonium persulfate was deployed as an oxidant to compare to hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, the S–CoFe2O4 composite performance was investigated in the presence of a trapping agent such isopropyl alcohol. The decreasing order of photocatalytic activity is as follows: S–CoFe2O4 + H2O2 > S–CoFe2O4 + APS > S–CoFe2O4 > CoFe2O4 > S–CoFe2O4 + IPA. Kinetic study shows S–CoFe2O4 with H2O2 system best fitted to zero order model. The degradation of methylene blue was examined using the liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy technique.

Cellular lightweight concrete (CLC), also known as foamed concrete, has been extensively used in construction for decades. Foamed concrete’s properties include low density, excellent thermal conductivity, great workability, and selfcompaction; these features enable foamed concrete to be utilized in various contexts. However, the excessive use of conventional materials in concrete production harms the environment. Therefore, using agro-waste as a material to construct ecologically sustainable structures has numerous practical and financial benefits. Palm oil clinker (POC) is a waste product resulting from solid waste combustion during palm oil extraction. This research focused on the properties of foamed concrete with POC at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% as the fine aggregate replacement to develop lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) with a density of 1300 kg/m3. Besides, the potential of POC powder (POCP) and thermally activated POCP (TPOCP) at 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% as cement replacements was examined. The development of compressive strength during a 90-day curing period was investigated. In addition, tensile and flexural strengths were assessed and reported, and the elastic modulus of the LFC was discussed. The transport properties of water absorption, porosity, and sorptivity were also investigated. The durability of concrete derivatives can exhibit the product’s resistance to chemical attacks and environmental conditions. After 75 days of immersion in hydrochloric acid and magnesium sulfate, the chemical resistivity of the produced LFC was determined by measuring the loss in weight and compressive strength. In addition, the effects of elevated temperatures on the LFC were determined by analyzing the mass loss and compressive strength degradation of specimens exposed to temperatures ranging from 200 to 800 °C. The test results demonstrated that the complete replacement of sand with POC enhanced the compressive strength of LFC by more than 50%. Similarly, POC-based LFC had higher flexural and tensile strengths than normal LFC. Besides, substituting 20% of cement with TPOCP could improve the strength of LFC by 23% during the initial curing days. Utilizing the optimal proportions of POC and POCP could enhance the residual strengths of LFC. Therefore, POC has the potential to be utilized as a fine aggregate and cementitious material to produce sustainable concrete.

Sarcopenia is an age-related, involuntary loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in elderly adults. To date, no effective cures for sarcopenia and AD are available. Physical and cognitive impairments are two major causes of disability in the elderly population, which severely decrease their quality of life and increase their economic burden. Clinically, sarcopenia is strongly associated with AD. However, the underlying factors for this association remain unknown. Mechanistic studies on muscle–brain crosstalk during cognitive impairment might shed light on new insights and novel therapeutic approaches for combating cognitive decline and AD. In this review, we summarize the latest studies emphasizing the association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment. The underlying mechanisms involved in muscle–brain crosstalk and the potential implications of such crosstalk are discussed. Finally, future directions for drug development to improve age-related cognitive impairment and AD-related cognitive dysfunction are also explored.

The voltage-gated potassium channels (Kv) are complex ion channels with distinct roles in neurotransmission, electrical conductivity of the heart, and smooth and striated muscle functions. Previously, we demonstrated that deletion of Kvβ2 in mice results in decreased Pax7 protein levels, hindlimb muscles and body weights, and fiber type switching. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that Kvβ2 regulates skeletal muscle function in mice. The young and old Kvβ2 knockout (KO) and wildtype (WT) mice were utilized to test the aging phenotype and skeletal muscle function. Consistent with our previous finding, we found a significant reduction in hindlimb skeletal muscles mass and body weight in young Kvβ2 KO mice, which was also significantly reduced in old Kvβ2 KO mice compared with age-matched WT mice. Forelimb grip strength, and the hindleg extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles force-frequency relations were significantly decreased in young and old Kvβ2 KO mice compared to age-matched WT mice. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy images of EDL muscles in young mice revealed a significant reduction in the sarcomere length for Kvβ2 KO vs. WT. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained tibialis anterior muscles cryosections displayed a significant decrease in the number of medium (2,000–4,000 µm2) and largest (>4,000 µm2) myofibers area in young Kvβ2 KO vs. WT mice. We also found a significant increase in fibrotic tissue area in young Kvβ2 KO mice compared with age-matched WT mice. Analysis of RNA Seq data of the gastrocnemius muscles (GAS) identified significant increase in genes involved in skeletal muscle development, proliferation and cell fate determination, atrophy, energy metabolism, muscle plasticity, inflammation, and a decrease in circadian core clock genes in young Kvβ2 KO vs. WT mice. Several genes were significantly upregulated (384 genes) and downregulated (40 genes) in young Kvβ2 KO mice compared to age-matched WT mice. Further, RT-qPCR analysis of the GAS muscles displayed a significant increase in pro-inflammatory marker Il6 expression in young Kvβ2 KO mice compared to age-matched WT mice. Overall, the present study shows that deletion of Kvβ2 leads to decreased muscles strength and increased inflammation.

Orthognathic surgery has evolved significantly over the past century. Osteotomies of the midface and mandible are contemporaneously used to perform independent or coordinated movements to address functional and aesthetic problems. Specific advances in the past twenty years include increasing fidelity with computer-assisted planning, the use of patient-specific fixation, expanding indications for management of upper airway obstruction, and shifts in orthodontic-surgical paradigms. This review article serves to highlight the contemporary practice of orthognathic surgery.
