Search

(Abridged) The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada published its calls to action in 2015 with 94 recommendations. Many of these 94 recommendations are directly related to education, language, and culture, some of which the Canadian Astronomy community can address and contribute to as part of reconciliation. The Canadian Astronomy community has an additional obligation since it benefits from facilities on Indigenous territories across Canada and the world. Furthermore, Indigenous people are still underrepresented at all levels in Canadian astronomy. The purpose of this Community Paper is to develop recommendations for the Canadian astronomy community to support Indigenous inclusion in the science community, support Indigenous learning by developing Indigenous-based learning materials and facilitate access to professionals and science activities, and to recognize and acknowledge the great contributions of Indigenous communities to our science activities. As part of this work we propose the ten following recommendations for CASCA as an organization and throughout this Community Paper we will include additional recommendations for individuals: astronomers, students and academics., Comment: 11 pages. We report the discovery of a $>1^\circ$ ($\sim50$ kpc) long stellar tidal stream emanating from the dwarf galaxy DDO 44, a likely satellite of Local Volume galaxy NGC 2403 located $\sim70$ kpc in projection from its companion. NGC 2403 is a roughly Large Magellanic Cloud stellar-mass galaxy 3 Mpc away, residing at the outer limits of the M 81 group. We are mapping a large region around NGC 2403 as part of our MADCASH (Magellanic Analogs' Dwarf Companions and Stellar Halos) survey, reaching point source depths (90% completeness) of ($g, i$) = (26.5, 26.2). Density maps of old, metal-poor RGB stars reveal tidal streams extending on two sides of DDO 44, with the streams directed toward NGC 2403. We estimate total luminosities of the original DDO 44 system (dwarf and streams combined) to be $M_{i, \rm{tot}} = -13.4$ and $M_{g, \rm{tot}} = -12.6$, with $\sim25-30\%$ of the luminosity in the streams. Analogs of $\sim$LMC-mass hosts with massive tidally disrupting satellites are rare in the Illustris simulations, especially at large separations such as that of DDO 44. The few analogs that are present in the models suggest that even low-mass hosts can efficiently quench their massive satellites., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. We measure NUV aperture magnitudes from {\sl GALEX} images for 258 ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates drawn from the initial SMUDGes survey of $\sim 300$ square degrees surrounding, and including, the Coma galaxy cluster. For the vast majority, 242 of them, we present flux upper limits due either to a lack of significant flux in the aperture or confusion with other objects projected within the aperture. These limits often place interesting constraints on the UDG candidates, indicating that they are non-star forming or quiescent. In particular, we identify field, quiescent UDG candidates, which are a challenge for formation models and are therefore compelling prospects for spectroscopic follow-up and distance determinations. We present FUV and NUV magnitudes for 16 detected UDG candidates and compare those galaxies to the local population of galaxies on color-magnitude and specific star formation rate diagrams. The NUV detected UDG candidates form mostly an extension toward lower stellar masses of the star forming galaxy sequence and none of these lie within regions of high local galaxy density. UDG candidates span a range of properties, although almost all are consistent with being quiescent, low surface brightness galaxies, regardless of environment.

GHz radio astronomy has played a fundamental role in the recent dazzling discovery of GW170817, a neutron star (NS)-NS merger observed in both gravitational waves (GWs) and light at all wavelengths. Here we show how the expected progress in sensitivity of ground-based GW detectors over the next decade calls for U.S.-based GHz radio arrays to be improved beyond current levels. We discuss specifically how several new scientific opportunities would emerge in multi-messenger time-domain astrophysics if a next generation GHz radio facility with sensitivity and resolution $10\times$ better than the current Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) were to work in tandem with ground-based GW detectors. These opportunities include probing the properties, structure, and size of relativistic jets and wide-angle ejecta from NS-NS mergers, as well as unraveling the physics of their progenitors via host galaxy studies., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

We present a homogeneous catalog of 275 large (effective radius $\gtrsim$ 5.3 arcsec) ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates lying within an $\approx$ 290 square degree region surrounding the Coma cluster. The catalog results from our automated postprocessing of data from the Legacy Surveys, a three-band imaging survey covering 14,000 square degrees of the extragalactic sky. We describe a pipeline that identifies UDGs and provides their basic parameters. The survey is as complete in these large UDGs as previously published UDG surveys of the central region of the Coma cluster. We conclude that the majority of our detections are at roughly the distance of the Coma cluster, implying effective radii $\ge 2.5$ kpc, and that our sample contains a significant number of analogs of DF 44, where the effective radius exceeds 4 kpc, both within the cluster and in the surrounding field. The $g-z$ color of our UDGs spans a large range, suggesting that even large UDGs may reflect a range of formation histories. A majority of the UDGs are consistent with being lower stellar mass analogs of red sequence galaxies, but we find both red and blue UDG candidates in the vicinity of the Coma cluster and a relative overabundance of blue UDG candidates in the lower density environments and the field. JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). We report the discovery of two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) which show clear evidence for association with tidal material and interaction with a larger galaxy halo, found during a search of the Wide portion of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). The two new UDGs, NGC2708-Dw1 and NGC5631-Dw1, are faint ($M_g$=$-$13.7 and $-$11.8 mag), extended ($r_h$=2.60 and 2.15 kpc) and have low central surface brightness ($\mu(g,0)$=24.9 and 27.3 mag arcsec$^{-2}$), while the stellar stream associated with each has a surface brightness $\mu(g)$$\gtrsim$28.2 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. These observations provide evidence that the origin of some UDGs may connect to galaxy interactions, either by transforming normal dwarf galaxies by expanding them, or because UDGs can collapse out of tidal material (i.e. they are tidal dwarf galaxies). Further work is needed to understand the fraction of the UDG population `formed' through galaxy interactions, and wide field searches for diffuse dwarf galaxies will provide further clues to the origin of these enigmatic stellar systems., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJL

We present photometric models of 532 disk galaxies in 3.6{\mu}m images from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G) using the non-parametric DiskFit algorithm. We first test DiskFit's performance on 400 synthetic S$^4$G-like galaxy images. DiskFit is unreliable in the bulge region, but accurately disentangles exponential disks from Ferrers bars farther out as long as their position angles differ by more than 5${^\circ}$. We then proceed to model the S$^4$G galaxies, successfully fitting 489 of them using an automated approach for initializing DiskFit, optimizing the model and deriving uncertainties using a bootstrap-resampling technique. The resulting component geometries and surface brightness profiles are compared to those derived by Salo et al. (2015) using the parametric model galfit. We find generally good agreement between the models, but discrepancies between best-fitting values for individual systems are often significant: the choice of algorithm clearly impacts the inferred disk and bar structure. In particular, we find that DiskFit typically assigns more light to the bar and less light to the disk relative to the Ferrers and exponential profiles presented by Salo et al. (2015) in the bar region. Given DiskFit's reliability at disentangling these components in our synthetic images, we conclude that the surface brightness distributions of barred S$^4$G galaxies are not well-represented by these functional forms. The results presented here underscore the importance of validating photometric decomposition algorithms before applying them to real data and the utility of DiskFit's non-parametric approach at measuring the structure of disks and bars in nearby galaxies., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Recent studies have shown that the proposal peer review processes employed by a variety of organizations to allocate astronomical telescope time produce outcomes that are systematically biased depending on whether proposal's principal investigator (PI) is a man or a woman. Using Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and Gemini Observatory proposal statistics from Canada over 10 recent proposal cycles, we assess whether or not the mean proposal scores assigned by the National Research Council's (NRC's) Canadian Time Allocation Committee (CanTAC) also correlate significantly with PI sex. Classical t-tests, bootstrap and jackknife replications show that proposals submitted by women were rated significantly worse than those submitted by men. We subdivide the data in order to investigate sex-disaggregated statistics in relation to PI career stage (faculty vs. non-faculty), telescope requested, scientific review panel, observing semester, and the PhD year of faculty PIs. Consistent with the bivariate results, a multivariate regression analysis controlling for other covariates confirmed that PI sex is the only significant predictor of proposal rating scores for the sample as a whole, although differences emerge for proposals submitted by faculty and non-faculty PIs. While further research is needed to explain our results, it is possible that implicit social cognition is at work. NRC and CanTAC have taken steps to mitigate this possibility by altering proposal author lists in order to conceal the PI's identity among co-investigators. We recommend that the impact of this measure on mitigating bias in future observing semesters be quantitatively assessed using statistical techniques such as those employed here., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We present deep Magellan/Megacam stellar photometry of four recently discovered faint Milky Way satellites: Sagittarius II (Sgr II), Reticulum II (Ret II), Phoenix II (Phe II), and Tucana III (Tuc III). Our photometry reaches ~2-3 magnitudes deeper than the discovery data, allowing us to revisit the properties of these new objects (e.g., distance, structural properties, luminosity measurements, and signs of tidal disturbance). The satellite color-magnitude diagrams show that they are all old (~13.5 Gyr) and metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\lesssim-2.2$). Sgr II is particularly interesting as it sits in an intermediate position between the loci of dwarf galaxies and globular clusters in the size-luminosity plane. The ensemble of its structural parameters is more consistent with a globular cluster classification, indicating that Sgr II is the most extended globular cluster in its luminosity range. The other three satellites land directly on the locus defined by Milky Way ultra-faint dwarf galaxies of similar luminosity. Ret II is the most elongated nearby dwarf galaxy currently known for its luminosity range. Our structural parameters for Phe II and Tuc III suggest that they are both dwarf galaxies. Tuc III is known to be associated with a stellar stream, which is clearly visible in our matched-filter stellar density map. The other satellites do not show any clear evidence of tidal stripping in the form of extensions or distortions. Using the Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) we search for optical counterparts of two massive (~10^9 solar masses) neutral hydrogen clouds near the spiral galaxy IC 5270, located in the outskirts of the IC 1459 group. These two HI clouds were recently discovered using the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Two low surface brightness optical counterparts to one of these HI clouds are identified in the new Gemini data that reaches down to magnitudes of ~27.5 mag in the g-band. The observed HI mass to light ratio derived with these new data, M_(HI)/L_g =242, is among the highest reported to date. We are also able to rule out that the two HI clouds are dwarf companions of IC 5270. The distributions of stars, gas, and dark matter in disk galaxies provide important constraints on galaxy formation models, particularly on small spatial scales (<1kpc). We have designed the RSS Imaging spectroscopy Nearby Galaxy Survey (RINGS) to target a sample of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. For each of these galaxies, we are obtaining and modeling Halpha and H1~21~cm spectroscopic data as well as multi-band photometric data. We intend to use these models to explore the underlying structure and evolution of these galaxies in a cosmological context, as well as whether the predictions of LCDM are consistent with the mass distributions of these galaxies. In this paper, we present spectroscopic imaging data for 14 of the RINGS galaxies observed with the medium spectral resolution Fabby-Perot etalon on the Southern African Large Telescope. From these observations, we derive high spatial resolution line of sight velocity fields of the Halpha line of excited hydrogen, as well as maps and azimuthally averaged profiles of the integrated Halpha and [NII] emission and oxygen abundances. We then model these kinematic maps with axisymmetric models, from which we extract rotation curves and projection geometries for these galaxies. We show that our derived rotation curves agree well with other determinations and the similarity of the projection angles with those derived from our photometric images argues against these galaxies having intrinsically oval disks., Comment: Accepted to appear in AJ (28 pages, 22 Figures)

We present deep, wide-field Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam photometry of two recently discovered satellites of the Milky Way (MW): Columba I and Triangulum II. The color magnitude diagrams of both objects point to exclusively old and metal-poor stellar populations. We re-derive structural parameters and luminosities of these satellites, and find $M_{\rm V, Col~I} = -4.2\pm0.2$ for Col I and $M_{\rm V, Tri~II} = -1.2\pm0.4$ for Tri II, with corresponding half-light radii of $r_{\rm h, Col~I} = 117\pm17$ pc and $r_{\rm h, Tri~II} = 21\pm4$ pc. The properties of both systems are consistent with observed scaling relations for MW dwarf galaxies. Based on archival data, we derive upper limits on the neutral gas content of these dwarfs, and find that they lack HI, as do the majority of observed satellites within the MW virial radius. Neither satellite shows evidence of tidal stripping in the form of extensions or distortions in matched-filter stellar density maps or surface density profiles. However, the smaller Tri II system is relatively metal-rich for its luminosity (compared to other MW satellites), possibly because it has been tidally stripped. Through a suite of orbit simulations, we show that Tri II is approaching pericenter of its eccentric orbit, a stage at which tidal debris is unlikely to be seen. In addition, we find that Tri II may be on its first infall into the MW, which helps explain its unique properties among MW dwarfs. We have found the atomic gas (HI) reservoirs of the blue ultra diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates identified by R\'oman and Trujillo in images near Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs). We confirm that all of the objects are indeed UDGs with effective radii R_e > 1.5 kpc. Three of them are likely to be gravitationally bound to the HCG near which they project, one is plausibly gravitationally bound to the nearest HCG, and one is in the background. We measure HI masses and velocity widths for each object directly from the spectra, and use the widths together with the UDG effective radii to estimate dynamical masses and halo spin parameters. The location of the blue UDGs in the HI mass - stellar mass plane is consistent with that of the broader gas-rich galaxy population, and both their HI masses and gas richnesses are correlated with their effective radii. The blue UDGs appear to be low-mass objects with high-spin halos, although their properties are not as extreme as those of the faintest diffuse objects found in HI searches. We discuss the ground-breaking science that will be possible with a wide area survey, using the MeerKAT telescope, known as MeerKLASS (MeerKAT Large Area Synoptic Survey). The current specifications of MeerKAT make it a great fit for science applications that require large survey speeds but not necessarily high angular resolutions. In particular, for cosmology, a large survey over $\sim 4,000 \, {\rm deg}^2$ for $\sim 4,000$ hours will potentially provide the first ever measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations using the 21cm intensity mapping technique, with enough accuracy to impose constraints on the nature of dark energy. The combination with multi-wavelength data will give unique additional information, such as exquisite constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity using the multi-tracer technique, as well as a better handle on foregrounds and systematics. Such a wide survey with MeerKAT is also a great match for HI galaxy studies, providing unrivalled statistics in the pre-SKA era for galaxies resolved in the HI emission line beyond local structures at z > 0.01. It will also produce a large continuum galaxy sample down to a depth of about 5\,$\mu$Jy in L-band, which is quite unique over such large areas and will allow studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe out to high redshifts, complementing the galaxy HI survey to form a transformational multi-wavelength approach to study galaxy dynamics and evolution. Finally, the same survey will supply unique information for a range of other science applications, including a large statistical investigation of galaxy clusters as well as produce a rotation measure map across a huge swathe of the sky. We present a novel algorithm based on a Bayesian method for 2D tilted-ring analysis of disk galaxy velocity fields. Compared to the conventional algorithms based on a chi-squared minimisation procedure, this new Bayesian-based algorithm suffers less from local minima of the model parameters even with highly multi-modal posterior distributions. Moreover, the Bayesian analysis, implemented via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling, only requires broad ranges of posterior distributions of the parameters, which makes the fitting procedure fully automated. This feature will be essential when performing kinematic analysis on the large number of resolved galaxies expected to be detected in neutral hydrogen (HI) surveys with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its pathfinders. The so-called '2D Bayesian Automated Tilted-ring fitter' (2DBAT) implements Bayesian fits of 2D tilted-ring models in order to derive rotation curves of galaxies. We explore 2DBAT performance on (a) artificial HI data cubes built based on representative rotation curves of intermediate-mass and massive spiral galaxies, and (b) Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) HI data from the Local Volume HI Survey (LVHIS). We find that 2DBAT works best for well-resolved galaxies with intermediate inclinations (20 deg < i < 70 deg), complementing three-dimensional techniques better suited to modelling inclined galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 46 pages, 33 figures

We present the chemical distribution of the Milky Way, based on 2,900$\, {\rm deg^2}$ of $u$-band photometry taken as part of the Canada-France Imaging Survey. When complete, this survey will cover 10,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$ of the Northern sky. By combing the CFHT $u$-band photometry together with SDSS and Pan-STARRS $g,r,$ and $i$, we demonstrate that we are able to measure reliably the metallicities of individual stars to $\sim 0.2$ dex, and hence additionally obtain good photometric distance estimates. This survey thus permits the measurement of metallicities and distances of the dominant main-sequence population out to approximately 30 kpc, and provides much higher number of stars at large extraplanar distances than have been available from previous surveys. We develop a non-parametric distance-metallicity decomposition algorithm and apply it to the sky at $30\deg < |b| < 70\deg$ and to the North Galactic Cap. We find that the metallicity-distance distribution is well-represented by three populations whose metallicity distributions do not vary significantly with vertical height above the disk. As traced in main-sequence stars, the stellar halo component shows a vertical density profile that is close to exponential, with a scale height of around 3 kpc. This may indicate that the inner halo was formed partly from disk stars ejected in an ancient minor merger., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) will map the northern high Galactic latitude sky in the $u$-band ("CFIS-u", 10,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$) and in the $r$-band ("CFIS-r", 5,000$\, {\rm deg^2}$), enabling a host of stand-alone science investigations, and providing some of the ground-based data necessary for photometric redshift determination for the Euclid mission. In this first contribution we present the $u$-band component of the survey, describe the observational strategy, and discuss some first highlight results, based on approximately one third of the final area. We show that the Galactic anticenter structure is distributed continuously along the line of sight, out to beyond 20 kpc, and possesses a metallicity distribution that is essentially identical to that of the outer disk sampled by APOGEE. This suggests that it is probably a buckled disk of old metal-rich stars, rather than a stream or a flare. We also discuss the future potential for CFIS-u in discovering star-forming dwarf galaxies around the Local Group, the characterization of the white dwarf and blue straggler population of the Milky Way, as well as its sensitivity to low-surface brightness structures in external galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from WIYN pODI imaging of Lacerta I (And XXXI), a satellite dwarf galaxy discovered in the outskirts of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) in Pan-STARRS1 survey data. Our deep, wide-field $g,i$ photometry reaches $\sim$3 magnitudes fainter than the photometry in the Pan-STARRS1 discovery paper and allows us to trace the stellar population of Lac I beyond two half-light radii from the galaxy center. We measure a Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distance for Lac I of $(m-M)_0=24.44\pm0.11$ mag (773$\pm$40 kpc, or 264$\pm$6 kpc from M31), which is consistent with the Pan-STARRS1 distance. We use a maximum-likelihood technique to derive structural properties for the galaxy, and find a half-light radius ($r_h$) of 3.24$\pm$0.21 arcmin (728$\pm$47 pc), ellipticity ($\epsilon$) of 0.44$\pm$0.03, total magnitude $M_V$ $=$ $-$11.4$\pm$0.3, and central surface brightness $\mu_{V,0}$ $=$ 24.8$\pm$0.3 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We find no HI emission in archival data and set a limit on Lac I's neutral gas mass-to-light ratio of $M_{HI}/L_V$ $<$ 0.06 $M_{sun}$/$L_{sun}$, confirming Lac I as a gas-poor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Photometric metallicities derived from Red Giant Branch stars within 2 $r_h$ yield a median [Fe/H] of $-$1.68$\pm$0.03, which is more metal-rich than the spectroscopically-derived value from Martin et al. (2014). Combining our measured magnitude with this higher metallicity estimate places Lac I closer to its expected position on the luminosity-metallicity relation for dwarf galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present resolved HI and CO observations of three galaxies from the HIghMass sample, a sample of HI-massive ($M_{HI} > 10^{10} M_\odot$), gas-rich ($M_{HI}$ in top $5\%$ for their $M_*$) galaxies identified in the ALFALFA survey. Despite their high gas fractions, these are not low surface brightness galaxies, and have typical specific star formation rates (SFR$/M_*$) for their stellar masses. The three galaxies have normal star formation rates for their HI masses, but unusually short star formation efficiency scale lengths, indicating that the star formation bottleneck in these galaxies is in the conversion of HI to H$_2$, not in converting H$_2$ to stars. In addition, their dark matter spin parameters ($\lambda$) are above average, but not exceptionally high, suggesting that their star formation has been suppressed over cosmic time but are now becoming active, in agreement with prior H$\alpha$ observations., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

We present a disc-halo N-body model of the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 628, one of the few systems that harbours a "slow" bar with a ratio of corotation radius to bar length of $\mathcal{R} \equiv R_c/a_b \sim 2$. We select our initial conditions using SDSS DR10 photometry, a physically motivated radially variable mass-to-light ratio profile, and rotation curve data from the literature. A global bar instability grows in our submaximal disc model, and the disc morphology and dynamics agree broadly with the photometry and kinematics of UGC 628 at times between peak bar strength and the onset of buckling. Prior to bar formation, the disc and halo contribute roughly equally to the potential in the galaxy's inner region, giving the disc enough self gravity for bar modes to grow. After bar formation there is significant mass redistribution, creating a baryon dominated inner and dark matter dominated outer disc. This implies that, unlike most other low surface brightness galaxies, UGC 628 is not dark matter dominated everywhere. Our model nonetheless implies that UGC 628 falls on same the relationship between dark matter fraction and rotation velocity found for high surface brightness galaxies, and lends credence to the argument that the disc mass fraction measured at the location where its contribution to the potential peaks is not a reliable indicator of its dynamical importance at all radii., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of the faintest known dwarf galaxy satellite of an LMC stellar-mass host beyond the Local Group, based on deep imaging with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam. MADCASH J074238+652501-dw lies $\sim$35 kpc in projection from NGC 2403, a dwarf spiral galaxy at $D$$\approx$3.2 Mpc. This new dwarf has $M_{g} = -7.4\pm0.4$ and a half-light radius of $168\pm70$ pc, at the calculated distance of $3.39\pm0.41$ Mpc. The color-magnitude diagram reveals no evidence of young stellar populations, suggesting that MADCASH J074238+652501-dw is an old, metal-poor dwarf similar to low luminosity dwarfs in the Local Group. The lack of either detected HI gas ($M_{\rm HI}/L_{V} < 0.69 M_\odot/L_\odot$, based on Green Bank Telescope observations) or $GALEX$ NUV/FUV flux enhancement is consistent with a lack of young stars. This is the first result from the MADCASH (Magellanic Analog Dwarf Companions And Stellar Halos) survey, which is conducting a census of the stellar substructure and faint satellites in the halos of Local Volume LMC analogs via resolved stellar populations. We report the discovery of Scl-MM-Dw2, a new dwarf galaxy at a projected separation of $\sim$50 kpc from NGC 253, as part of the PISCeS (Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor) project. We measure a tip of the red giant branch distance of $3.12\pm0.30$ Mpc, suggesting that Scl-MM-Dw2 is likely a satellite of NGC 253. We qualitatively compare the distribution of red giant branch (RGB) stars in the color-magnitude diagram with theoretical isochrones and find that it is consistent with an old, $\sim$12 Gyr, and metal poor, $-2.3<$[Fe/H]$<-1.1$, stellar population. We also detect a small number of asymptotic giant branch stars consistent with a metal poor $2-3$ Gyr population in the center of the dwarf. Our non-detection of HI in a deep Green Bank Telescope spectrum implies a gas fraction $M_{HI}/L_V<0.02$ Msun/Lsun. The stellar and gaseous properties of Scl-MM-Dw2 suggest that it is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Scl-MM-Dw2 has a luminosity of $M_V=-12.1\pm0.5$ mag and a half-light radius of $r_h=2.94\pm0.46$ kpc which makes it moderately larger than dwarf galaxies in the Local Group of the same luminosity. However, Scl-MM-Dw2 is very elongated ($\epsilon=0.66\pm0.06$) and it has an extremely low surface brightness ($\mu_{0,V}=26.5\pm0.7$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Its elongation and diffuseness make it an outlier in the ellipticity-luminosity and surface brightness-luminosity scaling relations. We have obtained high-spatial-resolution spectrophotometric data on several nearby spiral galaxies with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) Fabry-P\'erot interferometer on the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) as a part of the RSS Imaging spectroscopy Nearby Galaxy Survey (RINGS). We have successfully reduced two tracks of Fabry-P\'erot data for the galaxy NGC 2280 to produce a velocity field of the H-alpha line of excited hydrogen. We have modeled these data with the DiskFit modeling software and found these models to be in excellent agreement both with previous measurements in the literature and with our lower-resolution HI velocity field of the same galaxy. Despite this good agreement, small regions exist where the difference between the H-alpha and HI velocities is larger than would be expected from typical dispersions. This white paper discusses how a "next-generation" Very Large Array (ngVLA) operating in the frequency range 1-116 GHz could be a groundbreaking tool to study the detailed astrophysics of the "matter cycle" in the Milky Way and other galaxies. If optimized for high brightness sensitivity, the ngVLA would bring detailed microwave spectroscopy and modeling of the full radio spectral energy distribution into regular use as survey tools at resolutions of 0.1- 1 arcseconds. This wavelength range includes powerful diagnostics of density, excitation, and chemistry in the cold ISM, as well as multiple tracers of the rate of recent star formation, the magnetic field, shocks, and properties of the ionized ISM. We highlight design considerations that would make this facility revolutionary in this area, the foremost of which is a large amount of collecting area on ~km-length baselines. We also emphasize the strong case for harnessing the large proposed collecting area of the ngVLA for very long baseline applications as part of the core design. This would allow measurements of the three dimensional space motions of galaxies to beyond the Local Group and mapping of the Milky Way out to the far side of the disk. Finally, we discuss the gains from the proposed combination of very high resolution and sensitivity to thermal emission, which include observing the feeding of black holes and resolving forming protoclusters., Comment: 40 pages. This posting announces public availability of version 1.2 of the DiskFit software package developed by the authors, which may be used to fit simple non-axisymmetric models either to images or to velocity fields of disk galaxies. Here we give an outline of the capability of the code and provide the link to downloading executables, the source code, and a comprehensive on-line manual. We use a non-detection in $\nu = 1.4\,$GHz Green Bank Telescope observations of the ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue I, which could be immersed in a non-negligible halo magnetic field of the Milky Way, to place bounds on particle dark matter properties. We model the galaxy using an Einasto dark matter profile, and compute the expected synchrotron flux from dark matter annihilation as a function of the magnetic field strength $B$, diffusion coefficient $D_0$, and particle mass $m_\chi$ for different annihilation channels. The data strongly disfavor annihilations to $e^+e^-$ for $m_\chi \lesssim 50\,$GeV, but are not sensitive to the $b \bar b$ channel. Adopting a fiducial $B \sim 2\,\mu$G inferred from Segue I's proximity to the Milky Way, our models of annihilation to $\tau^+\tau^-$ with $m_\chi = 30\,$GeV require an intermediate value of $D_0$ for consistency with the data. The most compelling limits are obtained for WIMP annihilation to $\mu^+\mu^-$: we exclude $m_\chi \lesssim 30\,$GeV$\,\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-$ at 95% confidence, unless $D_0$ exceeds the Milky Way value or $B$ is significantly smaller than we have assumed., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRD

Precise measurements of gas kinematics in the disk of a spiral galaxy can be used to estimate its mass distribution. The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) has a large collecting area and field of view, and is equipped with a Fabry-Perot interferometer that can measure gas kinematics in a galaxy from the Halpha line. To take advantage of this capability, we have constructed a sample of 19 nearby spiral galaxies, the RSS Imaging and Spectroscopy Nearby Galaxy Survey (RINGS), as targets for detailed study of their mass distributions and have collected much of the needed data. In this paper, we present velocity maps produced from Halpha Fabry-Perot interferometry and HI aperture synthesis for one of these galaxies, NGC 2280, and show that the two velocity measurements are generally in excellent agreement. Minor differences can mostly be attributed to the different spatial distributions of the excited and neutral gas in this galaxy, but we do detect some anomalous velocities in our Halpha velocity map of the kind that have previously been detected in other galaxies. Models produced from our two velocity maps agree well with each other and our estimates of the systemic velocity and projection angles confirm previous measurements of these quantities for NGC 2280., Comment: Revised version submitted to AJ. 14 pages, 11 figures

We present first results of the study of a set of exceptional HI sources identified in the 40% ALFALFA extragalactic HI survey catalog alpha.40 as being both HI massive (M_HI > 10^10 Msun) and having high gas fractions for their stellar masses: the HIghMass galaxy sample. We analyze UV- and optical-broadband and Halpha images to understand the nature of their relatively underluminous disks in optical and to test whether their high gas fractions can be tracked to higher dark matter halo spin parameters or late gas accretion. Estimates of their star formation rates (SFRs) based on SED-fitting agree within uncertainties with the Halpha luminosity inferred SFRs. The HII region luminosity functions have standard slopes at the luminous end. The global SFRs demonstrate that the HIghMass galaxies exhibit active ongoing star formation (SF) with moderate SF efficiency, but relative to normal spirals, a lower integrated SFR in the past. Because the SF activity in these systems is spread throughout their extended disks, they have overall lower SFR surface densities and lower surface brightness in the optical bands. Relative to normal disk galaxies, the majority of HIghMass galaxies have higher Halpha equivalent widths and are bluer in their outer disks, implying an inside-out disk growth scenario. We present resolved HI observations of two galaxies, UGC 9037 and UGC 12506, members of a rare subset of galaxies detected by the ALFALFA extragalactic HI survey characterized by high HI mass and high gas fraction for their stellar masses. Both of these galaxies have M$_*>10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and M$_\text{HI}>$ M$_*$, as well as typical star formation rates for their stellar masses. How can such galaxies have avoided consuming their massive gas reservoirs? From gas kinematics, stability, star formation, and dark matter distributions of the two galaxies, we infer two radically different histories. UGC 9037 has high central HI surface density ($>10$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$). Its gas at most radii appears to be marginally unstable with non-circular flows across the disk. These properties are consistent with UGC 9037 having recently acquired its gas and that it will soon undergo major star formation. UGC 12506 has low surface densities of HI, and its gas is stable over most of the disk. We predict its gas to be HI-dominated at all except the smallest radii. We claim a very high dark matter halo spin parameter for UGC 12506 ($\lambda=0.15$), suggesting that its gas is older, and has never undergone a period of star formation significant enough to consume the bulk of its gas., Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures, AJ accepted

Radio observations of the Ursa Major II dwarf spheroidal galaxy obtained using the Green Bank Telescope are used to place bounds on WIMP dark matter properties. Dark matter annihilation releases energy in the form of charged particles which emit synchrotron radiation in the magnetic field of the dwarf galaxy. We compute the expected synchrotron radiation intensity from WIMP annihilation to various primary channels. The predicted synchrotron radiation is sensitive to the distribution of dark matter in the halo, the diffusion coefficient D_0, the magnetic field strength B, the particle mass m_\chi, the annihilation rate <\sigma v>, and the annihilation channel. Limits on <\sigma v>, m_\chi, B, and D_0 are obtained for the e^+ e^-, \mu^+ \mu^-, \tau^+ \tau^-, and b \bar b channels. Constraints on these parameters are sensitive to uncertainties in the measurement of the dark matter density profile. For the best fit halo parameters derived from stellar kinematics, we exclude 10 GeV WIMPs annihilating directly to e^+ e^- at the thermal rate <\sigma v> = 2.18 x 10^{-26} cm^3/s at the 2\sigma level, for B > 0.6 microGauss (1.6 microGauss) and D_0 = 0.1 (1.0) x the Milky Way diffusion value., Comment: Minor changes. The isolation, simple apparent structure, and low luminosity of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6503 make it an ideal candidate for an in-depth kinematic and photometric study. We introduce a new publicly available code, DiskFit, that implements procedures for fitting non-axisymmetries in either kinematic or photometric data. We use DiskFit to analyze new Halpha and CO velocity field data as well as HI kinematics from Greisen et al. to search for non-circular motions in the disc of NGC 6503. We find NGC 6503 to have remarkably regular gas kinematics that are well-described by rotation only. We also use DiskFit and a new Ks-band image of NGC 6503 to constrain photometric models of the disc, bar and bulge. We find the galaxy to be photometrically dominated by the disc. We find NGC 6503 to contain a faint bar and an exponential bulge which together contribute only ~5% of the total galaxy light. The combination of our kinematic and photometric DiskFit models suggest that NGC 6503 contains a weak, end-on bar that may have produced its Type II surface brightness profile but is unlikely to be responsible for its strong sigma-drop., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 15 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables; The DiskFit code can be found at http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~spekkens/diskfit/

We present Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) and follow-up Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI observations of the gas-rich interacting group NGC 3166/9. The sensitive ALFALFA data provide a complete census of HI-bearing systems in the group while the high-resolution GMRT data elucidate their origin, enabling one of the first unbiased physical studies of gas-rich dwarf companions and the subsequent identification of second generation, tidal dwarf galaxies in a nearby group. The ALFALFA maps reveal an extended HI envelope around the NGC 3166/9 group core, which we mosaic at higher resolution using six GMRT pointings spanning ~1 square degree. A thorough search of the GMRT datacube reveals eight low-mass objects with gas masses ranging from 4x10^7 to 3x10^8 M_sol and total dynamical masses up to 1.4x10^9 M_sol. A comparison of the HI fluxes measured from the GMRT data to those measured in the ALFALFA data suggests that a significant fraction (~60%) of the HI is smoothly distributed on scales greater than an arcminute (~7 kpc at the NGC 3166/9 distance). We compute stellar masses and star formation rates for the eight low-mass GMRT detections, using ancillary SDSS and GALEX data, and use these values to constrain their origin. Most of the detections are likely to be either pre-existing dwarf irregular galaxies or short-lived, tidally formed knots; however, one candidate, AGC 208457, is clearly associated with a tidal tail extending below NGC 3166, exhibits a dynamical to gas mass ratio close to unity and has a stellar content and star formation rate that are broadly consistent with both simulated as well as candidate tidal dwarf galaxies from the literature. High-quality observations of dark matter-dominated low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies indicate that, in contrast to the triaxial, centrally-concentrated cuspy halos formed in collisionless simulations of halo assembly, these galaxies reside in round, roughly constant density cored halos. In order to reconcile these data with galaxy formation in the context of LCDM, processes that alter the shape and density structure of the inner halo are required. We compile observational properties of LSB galaxies to evaluate the plausibility that a previously higher baryonic mass content and feedback from star formation can modify the dark matter halos of these galaxies. We also compare the properties of bulgeless disk galaxies formed in recent simulations to the LSB galaxy sample. We find that observational constraints on LSB galaxy star formation histories, structure, and kinematics make it difficult for baryonic physics to sphericalize and decrease the central density of the dark matter halos of LSB galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL; 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

We present a current catalog of 21 cm HI line sources extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey over ~2800 square degrees of sky: the alpha.40 catalog. Covering 40% of the final survey area, the alpha.40 catalog contains 15855 sources in the regions 07h30m < R.A. < 16h30m, +04 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +28 deg and 22h < R.A. < 03h, +14 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +32 deg. Of those, 15041 are certainly extragalactic, yielding a source density of 5.3 galaxies per square degree, a factor of 29 improvement over the catalog extracted from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey. In addition to the source centroid positions, HI line flux densities, recessional velocities and line widths, the catalog includes the coordinates of the most probable optical counterpart of each HI line detection, and a separate compilation provides a crossmatch to identifications given in the photometric and spectroscopic catalogs associated with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Fewer than 2% of the extragalactic HI line sources cannot be identified with a feasible optical counterpart; some of those may be rare OH megamasers at 0.16 < z < 0.25. A detailed analysis is presented of the completeness, width dependent sensitivity function and bias inherent in the current alpha.40 catalog. The impact of survey selection, distance errors, current volume coverage and local large scale structure on the derivation of the HI mass function is assessed. While alpha.40 does not yet provide a completely representative sampling of cosmological volume, derivations of the HI mass function using future data releases from ALFALFA will further improve both statistical and systematic uncertainties., Comment: 62 pages, 28 figures. We study the scaling relations between the luminosities, sizes, and rotation velocities of disk galaxies in the SFI++, with a focus on the size-luminosity (RL) and size-rotation velocity (RV) relations. Using isophotal radii instead of disk scale-lengths as a size indicator, we find relations that are significantly tighter than previously reported: the correlation coefficients of the template RL and RV relations are r=0.97 and r=0.85, which rival that of the more widely studied LV (Tully-Fisher) relation. The scatter in the SFI++ RL relation is 2.5-4 times smaller than previously reported for various samples, which we attribute to the reliability of isophotal radii relative to disk scale-lengths. After carefully accounting for all measurement errors, our scaling relation error budgets are consistent with a constant intrinsic scatter in the LV and RV relations for velocity widths logW>2.4, with evidence for increasing intrinsic scatter below this threshold. The scatter in the RL relation is consistent with constant intrinsic scatter that is biased by incompleteness at the low-luminosity end. Possible applications of the unprecedentedly tight SFI++ RV and RL relations are investigated. Just like the Tully-Fisher relation, the RV relation can be used as a distance indicator: we derive distances to galaxies with primary Cepheid distances that are accurate to 25%, and reverse the problem to measure a Hubble constant H_0=72+/-7 km/s/Mpc. Combining the small intrinsic scatter of our RL relation (0.034+/-0.001 log(kpc/h)) with a simple model for disk galaxy formation, we find an upper limit on the range of disk spin parameters that is a factor of ~7 smaller than that of the halo spin parameters predicted by cosmological simulations. This likely implies that the halos hosting Sc galaxies have a much narrower distribution of spin parameters than previously thought., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present sensitive aperture synthesis observations of the nearby, late-type spiral galaxy NGC 6503, and produce HI maps of considerably higher quality than previous observations by van Moorsel & Wells (1985). We find that the velocity field, while remarkably regular, contains clear evidence for irregularities. The HI is distributed over an area much larger than the optical image of the galaxy, with spiral features in the outer parts and localized holes within the HI distribution. The absence of absorption towards the nearby quasar 1748+700 yields an upper limit of 5 10^{17} cm^{-2} for the column density of cold HI gas along a line of sight which should intersect the disk at a radius of 29 kpc. This suggests that the radial extent of the HI disk is not much larger than that which we trace in HI emission (23 kpc). The observed HI distribution is inconsistent with models of a single thin or thick disk. Instead, the data require a model containing a thin disk plus a thicker low column-density HI layer that rotates more slowly than the thin disk and that extends only to approximately the optical radius. This suggests that the presence of extra-planar gas in this galaxy is largely the result of star formation in the disk rather than cold gas accretion. We present observations of an HI cloud complex most likely located in the Virgo galaxy cluster, first reported by Kent et al. (2007). The complex consists of five clouds, detected in the data set of the ALFALFA extragalactic HI survey at Arecibo. The clouds have radial velocities between cz~480 and 610 km/s. At the Virgo cluster distance, they are spread over a projected span of 170 kpc and have HI masses ranging from 0.48 to 1.7 x 10^8 Msun. The overall HI mass of the complex is 5.1 x 10^8 Msun. The clouds' velocity widths vary between 50 and 250 km/s. New results of follow-up aperture synthesis observations conducted with the Very Large Array are also presented, which yield a higher resolution view of two of the clouds in the complex. These two resolved clouds show no evidence of symmetry in the gas distribution or of any ordered motions. The possibility that the complex is a group of primordial objects, embedded in their own dark matter halo is thought to be unlikely. Scenarios in which the clouds have been removed from the disk of a galaxy traveling at high speed through the intracluster medium are considered. The most likely among those is thought to be one where the clouds were separated from NGC 4445 at a time >0.5 Gyr ago. We report the discovery by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey of eight HI features not coincident with stellar counterparts in the Virgo Cluster region. All of the HI clouds have cz < 3000 km/s and, if at the Virgo distance, HI masses between 1.9 x 10**7 and 1.1 x 10**9 solar masses. Four of the eight objects were reported or hinted at by previous studies and "rediscovered" by ALFALFA. While some clouds appear to be associated with optical galaxies in their vicinity, others show no clear association with a stellar counterpart. Two of them are embedded in relatively dense regions of the cluster and are associated with M49 and M86; they were previously known. The others are mostly located in peripheral regions of the cluster. Especially notable are a concentration of objects towards the so-called M cloud, 3 to 5 degrees to the NW of M87, and a complex of several clouds projected roughly halfway between M87 and M49. The object referred to as VIRGOHI21 and proposed to be a "dark galaxy" is also detected and shown to be a tidal feature associated with NGC 4254., Comment: accepted for publication in Ap. J. Letters
